thousands of israelis flood the streets of tel aviv to demand a cease-fire with hamas after the bodies of six hostages were found in gaza. the mass demonstrations, a possible turning point in the 11-month conflict. san francisco 49ers' wide receiver ricky pearsall wounded in an attempted robbery. an update on his condition and details on the gunman. and grammy winning singer adele drops a bombshell. what she told fans at her show over the weekend. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin in israel where there are calls for nationwide labor strike today to express outrage over the deaths of six hostages in gaza. thousands of people took part in a mass demonstration in tel aviv last night to protest the israeli government's strategy in dealing with hamas. they are demanding a deal to return the remaining hostages. carissa lawson is tracking developments for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning,

anne-marie. one israeli american hostage was among those killed and president joe biden said he was devastated and outraged. protesters are showing the world that words are not what this war needs any longer, it's action to put an end to the killings on both sides. clashes between protesters and police in tel aviv overnight as thousands took to the streets in israel to demand a cease-fire and hostage deal. the massive protests erupted after israel announced that it had recovered the bodies of six hostages in gaza who were taken by hamas on october 7th. israeli officials say they believe the hostages were killed shortly before military forces arrived to rescue them. an outpouring of grief at the funeral of amog sarusi. his mother saying, "my beloved son. how we hoped and prayed to see you again." israel american hersh goldberg-polin was also one of the six hostages killed. his parents addressed last month's democratic national convention.

>> hersh, if you can hear us, we love you. >> reporter: in new york on sunday the families of other hostages called on president joe biden to help get a deal. >> none of this had to happen. >> reporter: over the weekend the president told reporters he's optimistic that a deal can still be reached. he and vice president kamala harris also spoke to the goldberg-polin family to express condolences. israel's prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, warned that those who kill the hostages do not want a deal, and he vowed to do everything to make sure the atrocities are not perpetrated again. israel and hamas agreed to brief pauses in fighting to allow for u.n. polio vaccinations, but violent clashes have pick up in the west bank. the white house says national security adviser jake sullivan met virtually with the families of the hostages on sunday to discuss the administration's efforts to push both sides to reach a deal to bring the remaining hostages back home. back to you.

>> all right. carissa lawson, thank you very much. vice president kamala harris and joe biden will attend pittsburgh's labor day parade after a working weekend on the campaign trail for harris and running mate tim walz. and there's new polling on the presidential race as we get closer to election day. skyler henry reports from the white house. >> reporter: democratic vice presidential nominee tim walz was back in minnesota sunday for the state fair ahead of a busy week on the campaign trail. >> people are saying we're getting to talk about the economy here. >> reporter: polls show more americans have a favorable view of walz than republican vice presidential nominee j.d. vance. >> he's a great gentleman and good leader. he engaged in every community. >> reporter: several top issues remain on the minds of voters including foreign policy, reproductive rights, and the economy. the harris-walz campaign released a memo sunday as it

looks to expand voter support through its ground game, hoping -- opening more than 300 offices and bringing on 2,000 staffers in the seven battleground states. the trump-vance campaign says its battleground operation is rolling as the former president looks to lay out his vision for americans over the next nine weeks. >> we feel good about what our message is which is economic freedom and economic opportunity for everybody. >> reporter: though one of the nation's largest labor unions has yet to endorse either ticket. >> half of our members are republicans, half are democrats. we have to serve all of our membership equally. we want the opportunity to sit down with vice president harris. >> reporter: president biden will join harris for a labor day event in pennsylvania. another swing state. it will be their first joint event since vice president harris became the democratic nominee. former president trump will be in pennsylvania later this week. skyler henry, cbs news, the white house. san francisco 49ers rookie

wide receiver ricky pearsall is recovering after being shot in an attempted robbery over the weekend. he was released from the hospital yesterday. a suspected shooter, a minor, is in custody. cbs' elise preston reports. >> reporter: 23-year-old ricky pearsall was seen walking to an ambulance shortly after the attack which took place in broad daylight on saturday. just hours after he signed autographs in union square. >> he was walking alone when a suspect approached and attempted to commit an armed robbery using a gun. >> reporter: police say as the football player struggled with the 17-year-old suspect over the gun it fired, injuring both. pearsall was released sunday afternoon. in a statement he and his team thanked police and medical staff. >> we are 49ers -- >> reporter: pearsall was the 49ers' first round pick in the draft following a standout career at the university of florida. >> pearsall touchdown! >> reporter: police don't believe he was targeted because he's a pro athlete.

the suspect is hospitalized and under arrest. >> it definitely is a setback, and it's a tragic event. any time there's gun violence which tragically exists all around this country, it's a problem for -- for any city. >> reporter: san francisco's district attorney is expected to file charges this week in the juvenile court system. elise preston, cbs news, los angeles. overseas, russia launched a new round of drones and missiles against ukraine's capital today. it comes after russian missiles targeted the city of kharkiv. ukrainian officials say several buildings were hit including a shopping mall and a residential building. authorities say at least 47 people were injured including five children. germany's far-right party is on course to win the most votes in a state election for the first time since the nazi era. exit polls find the nationalist party called alternative for germany or afd is on track to claim victory in state

parliamentary elections in the eastern region. now the elections were being closely watched as a measure of the rising strength of extremist parties in that country. it's largely seen as a litmus test for the country's social democratic party ahead of next year's general elections. coming up, the california neighborhood left in the dark after the utility company made the decision to cut off its power. and the beluga whale believed to be a russian spy is found dead. this is "cbs news mornings." cuts -- a power company cuts off an entire california neighborhood. also, what may have caused a deadly bus crash over the weekend. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "usa today" reports the ntsb says tire failure is suspected in the deadly mississippi bus crash. seven people were killed and dozens injured after the accident early saturday morning on interstate 20 near the city of vicksburg. the national transportation safety board and the mississippi highway patrol say the vehicle likely experienced tire failure causing it to run off the road and overturn. the bus was traveling from atlanta to dallas when the accident happened. the "los angeles times" says power was cut off to 140 homes in ranchos palos verdes due to landslide danger. southern california edison shut off energy yesterday around noon as some of the homes continued to shift from an ongoing landslide that has already caused damage to homes, roads, and utilities.

some residents expressed their frustration. >> my foundation is damaged. i am in the process of moving out and have no idea where the [ bleep ] i'm going. last month more than 100 homes had to have their gas shut off due to the shifting. residents in the affected area are being told to be ready to evacuate at any moment. and "the new york times" reports a celebrated spy whale has been found dead in norway. the body of the animal nicknamed hvaldimir was found over the weekend. the beluga whale was first spotted in norwegian waters five years on -- years ago with a g pro camera attached to a harness that read equipment of st. petersburg. that sparked rumors the mammal could be a spy whale, something experts say happened in the past. moscow never responded to the allegation. coming up on cbs "moneywatch," thousands of oasis fans left empty-handed as the band's reunion gig sells out. how much those much-coveted tickets are going for on resale sites. much-coveted

matt pieper has your cbs "moneywatch" report. >> reporter: wall street is closed for the labor day holiday along with government offices, the post office, even your bank and costcos are closed. there's a standoff between directv and disney. because of it espn and abc have gone dark for 11 million people who have directv. it's after the sides were unable to reach a new carriage agreement. espn was showing the fourth round of the u.s. open when it went off the air. it also means those customers will not be seeing any college football. thousands of hotel workers are striking. more than 10,000 of them at 24 hotels from boston down to hawaii. unite here is the union that represents them which says they're striking not just for better pay but also better working conditions including the return of daily room cleaning that many hotel chains dropped during the pandemic. it includes hilton, hyatt, marriott, and omni. ♪

and tickets for the reunion tour of the 1990s band oasis went on sale in the uk. and of course the website selling the tickets crashed under the weight of a lot of desperate fans. within hours, tickets started popping up on resale websites for as high as $8,000. the gigs begin in july, assuming the brothers do not reignite their feud and go super nova again. that's your cbs news cbs "moneywatch" report for this monday morning. i'm matt pieper, cbs news, new york. jimmy buffett's fans took to the streets of florida to pay tribute to the late singer. ♪ >> thousands of fans took part in a massive parade on duval street in key west yesterday to honor buffett on the one-year anniversary of his death. buffett moved to key west in 1972. next up, how the cdc is stepping into make sure that parents add vaccinations to their child's list of back-to-school preps.

>> coco gauff's reign as the u.s. open champion is over. she failed to advance in the fourth round yesterday after losing to fellow american emma navarro. for the match, gauff had 19 double faults and 60 unforced errors to just 14 winners. after the match gauff said she had no regrets emotionally. as children return to school, there's growing concern over the lack of vaccinations being used against preventable diseases. in some cases access is the problem. misinformation and mistrust are also stopping some parents from getting their children shots. now the cdc is stepping in with a plan to boost those numbers. cbs news medical contributor dr. celine gounder reports. >> reporter: no tears from fort worth, texas, kindergartener emerlie soria getting her required vaccines with her dad and little brother. >> she was behind on her vaccination schedule by one year.

we had to get all of them taken care of. >> reporter: they were able to catch up on their vaccines because the tarrant county health department brought this free clinic to a high school gym in their neighborhood. >> it was a lot cheaper than going into a doctor's office and getting it done that way. >> reporter: health workers here gave out more than 2,600 doses to nearly 1,000 people. >> the reason it's working so well is because they feel comfortable coming here. it's a school they know, and it's a place that is familiar to them. >> reporter: but as children head back to school, parents filing for vaccine exemptions have gone up to about 3% since the pandemic. that makes communities more susceptible to diseases like measles. one of the most contagious viruses. >> we see pockets in communities where that vaccination level is lower, so we want to really think about the unique barriers that might be present in those communities. >> reporter: we've seen a rise in measles as well as pertussis or whooping cough cases. what is the cdc doing? >> we have a vaccines for
