israeli control of a narrow piece of land along the gaza eastern border calling that border oxygen for hamas. meanwhile impatience within and outside of israel is growing. >> reporter: a third day of protests in jerusalem as thousands demanded benjamin netanyahu reach a cease-fire and hostage release deal. a court is forcing people back to work after striking on monday, causing industries to grind to a halt. the u.s. is also turning up the heat on the israeli prime minister. >> do you think he's doing enough? >> no. >> reporter: yesterday, president joe biden and vice president harris met with the hostage negotiation team with biden saying he plans to speak to anyone ya hugh's team. meanwhile he was forced to push back to mounting pressure. >> we're asked to make

concessions? what message does this send hamas? it says kill more hostages. the pressure internationally must be directed at these killers, hamas, not at israel. >> reporter: thousands gathered in jerusalem monday for the funeral of hersh golberg-polin, one of six hostages killed monday. >> finally, my sweet boy, finally, finally, finally he is free. >> reporter: meanwhile 50,000 have been killed according to health officials with rage in the west bank and netanyahu vowing hamas will pay a heavy price. yesterday the united kingdom said it would suspend some weapons exports to israel over concerns it could violate law. the uk sends a very small amount of weapons to israel compared to other countries like the u.s. back to you. >> jarred hill in new york. thank you so much, jarred. well, vice president kamala harris campaigns in new hampshire today. she kicked off her fall campaign

with a special joint appearance with president biden to rally union voters on labor day. cbs's skyler henry reports from the white house. >> reporter: president biden and vice president harris are together again, campaigning at a union hall in pittsburgh. it's their first campaign event together since harris was elevated on the presidential ticket as presidential nominee. >> i promise if you elect kamala harris, its will be the best president you have ever made. >> reporter: meanwhile harris was in michigan. >> when i am in president we will end that act and end union busting once and for all. >> reporter: her running mate minnesota governor tim walz met with labor leaders in his state before speaking at a labor event in milwaukee. >> vice president harris is a protector of dmoms. when we win this election, we'll have your back just like you had our back. >> reporter: they say it's the

most pro-labor in history and claims the trump administration was anti-worker and anti-union. union members are an important base of support in this year's election. >> it's very important that the democrats look to harris to replicate this time around. >> give it up for president donald j. trump. >> reporter: he criticized the current administration's immigration policies friday night. >> many of these people are criminals. many of these people are coming out of the roughest countries in the world. >> reporter: the campaigns are intensifying with a little more than two months to go until election day. skyler henry, cbs news, the white house. overseas an investigation is underway after two u.s. marines were attacked by an alleged nationalist youth group in turkey. it happened yesterday in the port of izmir. officials say the soldiers were wearing civilian clothes when

they were attacked by a group of 15 people. they say the assailants who have been detained were a part of a nationalist group called the turkish union. a student group with an anti-american stance. u.s. officials say the marines are okay and they're safe. in venezuela, an arrest warrant has been issued for opposition leader edmundo gonzalez. the country's attorney general is accusing him of incitement and other crimes amid a dispute over whether he or president nicolas maduro won a july election. meanwhile they seized a jet used by maduro. officials say the aircraft, which is now in the hands of federal officials in florida was illegally purchased through a shell company and smuggled out despite sanctions and export control laws. pope francis arrived in jakarta, indonesia, this morning amid a historic trip across asia. it's his longest trip since becoming pope. francis will be in indonesia until friday.

parade. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. "the new york times" reports at least five people were shot at new york city's west indian-american day parade. police say a gunman opened fire in a targeted attack yesterday along the parade route in brooklyn. two people were critically wounded. the shooter got away. the parade, one of the world's largest annual celebrations of caribbean culture, has been marred by violence in the past. police were out in force yesterday, including drones and helicopters overhead. the "san francisco chronicle" says san francisco 49ers player ricky pearsall will miss four games after being shot in the chest during a robbery. sources say pearsall was walking alone carrying shopping bags saturday when a 17-year-old suspect attempted to rob him. the team has not indicated how long he'll be out. prior to the shooting he missed some training time because of hamstring and shoulder issues.

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. police in los angeles called in thoro their robot dog as reinforcement after shots rang out while officers served a search warrant at a north hollywood home. the robot known as spot is seen in action as it searches entrances and lifts an arm to open a door. the suspects were eventually taken into custody and no one was hurt. about 48 million tons of plastic is taken every year, but very little is recycled.

but there is a new program that says it can recycle any kind of plastic, calling it a model for the nation. cbs's ben tracy teams up with inside climate news to look at the problems the program has railroad are encountered and the deep pockets behind it. >> reporter: when brandy deason bags up her plastic recycling -- >> i'm waiting for the tracker to come up. >> reporter: -- she tosses in a tracking device at the end. you're like a plastic spy. >> yeah, i feel a little bit like it, yeah. >> reporter: she was skeptical of houston's new recycling program that claims it can recycle any kind of plastic. the tracker showed her bags ended up at this storage site, not a recycling center. >> do you think the average person in houston dropping off the recycling thinks it ends up here? >> no, no. i think they've gotten the idea that it's being taken care of and being recycled. >> reporter: instead we saw piles of plastic waste stacked several feet high. the city says it's collected 250 tons of plastic since the end of

2022 and almost none of it has been recycled yet. >> how big is it? >> so about it's about nine football fields 9,050 square feet. >> reporter: it comes to this facility that has yet to be build. ryan represents a company called cyclyx. >> we need a huge amount of plastics to get ready for the startup and we want to start it now in order to get ahead of it. >> the honest thing is it has not been recycled yet. >> it will be recycled. >> reporter: plastic is made of oil and gas and comes in thousands of different varieties that can't be mixed together. that's why less than 10% gets recycled. but cyclyx says it's figured out a way to sort any kind of plastic into these pellets that can be recycled. cyclyx is partly sponsored by

exxonmobil, one of the largest place on the planet. it's trying to prove something it calls advanced recycling can solve the planet's crisis of plastic waste and hopes it can be a new sign. ray master leo manages the effort. >> it allows us to take that wider rank of plastic waste that doesn't have a home today and repurpose them. advanced recycling is real. it's happening. we're doing it. >> reporter: the process uses heat to break down plastic to its molecular level. a small amount is turned into new plastic, but much of it becomes fuel that is burned, creating planet-warming emissions. exxon says it's processed 60 million pounds of plastic so far, but the industry has touted it for decades and has not yet made it work. plastic makers are now waging a new recycling ad campaign just as shell oil shelved their
