issue of gun control could play out in the presidential race. we'll have that conversation in just a few minutes. but first, a look at your news headlines. the 17 year old, accused of shooting 49 year old forty-niner ricky pearsall, made his first
4:31 pm
appearance in court today and his attorney says he has genuine remorse. police say pearsall was shot while someone was trying to rob him in san francisco's union square on saturday. the suspect faces several charges, including attempted murder. today, outside the hearing, his attorneys said the teen is sorry for what happened >>i think that, my clients certainly should be treated as a juvenile. he is a juvenile. it's very rare for transfer to occur. >liz>pearsall has been released from the hospital and is expected to play later this season. this is surveillance video of a robbery at a san rafael consignment store. police say several suspects came in last night while customers were still shopping. they smashed display cases and got away with jewelry. police say the robbery happened in about 60s. the suspects then drove off. luckily, no one was hurt. police are still looking for the thieves. san francisco city attorney is suing for online tobacco retailers. he
4:32 pm
says they broke city law by selling flavored nicotine pouches. the retailers named in the lawsuit are rogue holdings. swisher northerners scandinavia and lucy goods. we have reached out to those companies for their side and are waiting to hear back san francisco is pushing to expand its entertainment zones. mayor london breed introduced legislation to create four new zones to help revitalize downtown. that's in addition to the first entertainment zone already approved on front street, where people can legally drink on the streets. the new zones include mid-market union square and thrive city. today is national blood donation day and people came in pleasanton to contribute to a community blood drive hosted by stanford medical center. it's a day that highlights the importance and need of blood donors >>i do know that i'm making a difference, and for me, it's just something that i've incorporated into my life and do quite frequently
4:33 pm
>liz>each year, nearly 7 million people in the u.s. donate blood all right. switching to weather now to our first >alert >>weather blast >of heat >liz>is here and >there is >liz>a heat >advisory. >>will change that graphic in just a moment. but there's also a spare the air alert. so a lot >of things to look at >liz>right now. >the >>heat is >also >>not >>helping >>that >>fire danger. no it's not. or the rest of us trying to go about our lives just here at home, if not on the front lines. you got one more day. so let's get through tomorrow. i mean, the good news is the heat advisory expires tomorrow night. that's good. yeah. >liz>one more day. >we >>can do >it. and then there's going to be a cooldown. rest of the seven-day forecast. we're going to talk about a small, very small chance of rain coming to parts of northernmost california. by the time we get to the weekend, which is not that far off. but i've got one important item of business to discuss first, which is all of the areas on the map that are still shaded on here. the good news for san francisco is you're not shaded. you no longer have a heat advisory you cool down like ten degrees
4:34 pm
today from where you were yesterday. and the reason we did that the onshore influence was strong enough today to cool anybody down near the water significantly, but it didn't do enough inland. so if we remove the winds, everybody that's still shaded, it's got a heat advisory. this goes until 11:00 tomorrow night. so you got to get through tomorrow. we're kind of past the worst of the heat for today, at least in terms of daytime highs. it's still going to be hot out there for the next several hours but what we're going to look at here are the daytime highs for tomorrow. and the numbers that are inland are almost in fact, all of these numbers are pretty much identical to what you just did today. so you can see why you've got the heat advisory we're still doing triple digit heat for inland valleys. we've gotten to that time of year now where average daytime highs at least climatologically. as we go into september, start coming down by a few degrees so like 87 would be your average daytime high for those inland valleys. you're nowhere near that way above it. you're not breaking records, but you're far enough above it that you've
4:35 pm
got to stay very heat aware. go ahead and take in those numbers in the north because you're included in it as well. and when we get to the seven day forecast, you're going to see the seven day for inland microclimates. that's going to include north bay and east bay. and you will see some relief once we get past tomorrow. more on that coming up in a second. and you can see the number here for san francisco very little in the way of marine layer. let's go to that wide view. you're going to have to look for it right here just a little bit. and then it gets pushed out off the coast. we're not really getting much help at all from the marine layer. we might have gotten some onshore influence here to bring the numbers down, but we don't really get this strong influence from this piddly little cloud developing off the coast over the next few hours, certainly not enough to get inland. we're not going to wake up to the gray skies anymore, at least not for the next several days. from the marine layer that's taken a break. we've got to go to the big forecast image just for a moment, because in addition to the heat advisory, we're still needing to use the heat risk map, which helps message those places that really need to be on guard. if you get into those shades of orange or red
4:36 pm
especially the red. take a look at that splotch there in between walnut creek and concord along 680. that is a high degree of risk from heat related health impacts. that's one area. and in the south bay san jose, you're going to get your own seven day forecast here in a second, because you've been included in that moderate degree of heat related health impacts for quite some time. and we're going to get you a break as well. coming up. we'll go back over to seven day forecast now, and we'll start out. remember we were talking about these inland parts of the bay any place that's shaded in the heat advisory, we're going to start with you first. and that's our broad brushing for our inland microclimates. so let's start there. it's just going to stay inland on here. but now you know we're talking about inland east bay and north bay valleys look at the improvement. so after 11:00 on thursday you are out of the heat advisory friday still hot but at least you've come down enough. we can take you out of the advisory and then look at the relief. remember, we were talking about 87 is the average for this time of year how about
4:37 pm
a couple of days below average? not until next tuesday and wednesday. but that's got to make you feel good. at least knowing it's coming. we're not going to be here forever. you got to get through definitely the next 24 hours. and then there's some real relief. san jose, you get your own seven day forecast here because your numbers are notably different than the inland valleys. and you're also much warmer than the generalized bay. we've got a lot of people here that this applies to. you still are under that heat advisory through tomorrow at 11. and then it's going to get better on friday you'll be down to 92. and then look back here. we'll get you back down into the low 80s. and just to round things out, since san francisco was so exceptionally warm yesterday and you did get a nice break today you're pretty much going to stay there. that is a really good looking seven day forecast considering the average would be low 70s in san francisco now anyway. so liz we're getting some help, but we got to get through tomorrow. >liz>we just got to get through tomorrow. and you're right in san francisco. it's so bizarre when you can't open up your windows and get that natural air conditioning. >yes. >>it's very difficult for folks
4:38 pm
who live >here. it will be there tonight. >liz>can't >>wait sure. >liz>all >>right. see >liz>you later. thank >you. darren. >liz>all right let's go back to the shooting of niners rookie ricky pearsall over the weekend. it's sparking a new debate over when to put minors on trial as adults. right now, the 17 year old suspect is facing a charge of attempted murder. district attorney brooke jenkins announced that she is holding back on escalating the case to adult court at least for now. >>we have to look at the facts. we have to look at the minors history. we have to look at a number of things in order to make a determination of whether we think it's appropriate to seek transfer. >liz>attorney ivan gold says the attempted murder charge could mean severe penalties, even for a minor and that a high profile case paired with national pressure to combat crime in the city may have led to more severe charges >>a high profile case this case will be watched throughout the country they do not want to appear soft on crime. the san francisco district attorney's office this case will be an example.
4:39 pm
>liz>brooke jenkins says her office doesn't even have the power to charge the suspect as an adult, and would need to get a recommendation from a judge first. and today, another high profile shooting, this time in georgia four people were killed and nine others injured at a high school. it happened about 50 miles northeast of atlanta police say two students and two teachers were killed. the suspect is a 14 year old student. cbs news correspondent dave malkoff heard from witnesses. >>officials say gunfire erupted at this georgia high school wednesday morning. >>there are four individuals who are deceased from this incident nine that have been taken to local hospitals with various injuries of those that were are deceased, two were students and two were teachers. here at the at the school. >>the barrow county sheriff's office says a suspect was taken into custody after gun violence at apalachee high school. >>he is a 14 year old student

here at the high school. within minutes, law enforcement was on scene as well as two school resource officers assigned here to the school. once they encountered the subject, the subject immediately surrendered to these officers and he was taken into custody. >>the sheriff's office said officers from multiple law enforcement agencies fire and ems personnel were dispatched to the school in response to the shooting. >>our like like 12, 15 different gunshots it was like boom, boom, like the gunshots were so close to me, like my ears started ringing real bad, like the whole classroom was smoking i was in class and we heard shots. the teacher ran, slammed the door, made us all go in the corner. >>the fbi's atlanta office says agents are on the scene and supporting local law enforcement during the chaos. the school with about 1900 students, was placed on lockdown. they later evacuated to the school's football field and were cleared to reunite with their families. georgia governor brian kemp says he

we are just 62 days away from the election, and democratic presidential nominee, kamala harris, rolled out her small business plans in new hampshire today. meanwhile republican nominee, donald trump, is speaking against harris' poll sis. as skyler henry reports, he continues his name calling. >> reporter: vice president kamala harris chose tax-friendly new hampshire to roll out her plans to help small businesses. >> it's essentially tax cut for starting a small business. >> reporter: expanding tax cuts for new start-up businesses from $5,000 up to $50,000. there's no price tag on this plan, and it would need congressional approval. >> i want to see 25 million new small business applications bit end of my first term.

out from this race. this is really a neck and neck race. it will remain with a couple of reflection points. one of those points will be the debate next week. it could be the vice presidential debate in the beginning of october. it could be an event, a tragic mass shooting like we saw today. that means the candidates have to handle this gingerly once all the facts are in, but it will be an important pivot point. the reason we see this, in 2018, the parkland, florida shooting occurred. when that did, it cut a saber through what was happening with voters. what happened to the voters, those that are in school, colleges, so forth came out in droves in the midterm election and they flipped and they went democratic. you also saw similar issue in 2022 over the politics of abortion. democrats have emphasized both of those issues. expect kamala harris to do that next week. they also emphasize the third issue, which is the capacity of trump to be the president and whether
4:48 pm
he was fit for office. that issue did not cut well with swing voters, but they were returned to the issue with tim walz calling them weird. nonetheless the gun violence issue will come home, it will be nationalized because of what happened in san francisco, because of what happened in georgia, and that has huge potential with emerging voting blocks for the 18 and24-year-olds and suburban women, that will advantage harris in a couple of points with swing states. >> speaking of swing states, the fact the horrible tragedy did happen in georgia. is that going to play in to how the candidates will handle this situation and how they would talk about it, given that it's in a state that's directly impacted by gun violence? >> there are a couple of elements here that it is important in a state like georgia or pennsylvania. those two states are absolutely critical for kamala harris. you see democrats doing something else here. they are also playing heavily in nebraska too. and nebraska is one of the two states that could cut or if you will, kind of loosen its
4:49 pm
electoral votes. so if they went to omaha, obama won omaha in 2008, biden won omaha in 2020. they get a share of the electoral votes, for example. so what that means practically, the kamala harris people are positioning themselves that if they lose georgia and they lose pennsylvania, states where gun violence has played heavenly. even if they lose those states, they could still get to 270. the difficulty, perhaps for donald trump. that will put a lot of pressure for him to win north carolina and arizona. this is a state-by-state, county-by-county play. what gets lost are the tragic developments that we saw today and moving forward. and also i think it will spill over and adds to the component of what is happening down ballot where they are seeking the house, trying to hold the senate. and republicans have a favorable map in the senate, facing an uphill battle. what happens will become important even though both candidates will have a lot of resources.
