coast. be prepared for clouds along the coast and heat further inland. it was a hot day today. take a look at where we topped out. first a look at the fog. starting to swallow up with fog. temperature ins half-moon bay. you don't have to get too far away from the city for temperature to heat up a bit. east of the oakland hills, temperatures were flirting with 100 degrees. one more day of extreme heat for inland parts of the bay area. it will be five or six degrees warmer in san jose tomorrow. and a few degrees warmer in concord as well. close to 15 degrees above normal. weaker on shore breeze. should allow temperatures to warm up. no spare the air alert for

tomorrow. air quality should improve as temperatures are going to be dropping as we head into the weekend. as sunday rolls around, near normal temperatures, good air quality. we like those things. >> like normal. thank you paul. onanother story. this is about a brutal attack caught on camera in the streets of san francisco. the victim tells us it all started with the racial slur that quickly escalated to her being beaten on the floor of a liquor store. the woman was attacked, is a san francisco chef who found fame after starring on a netflix show with her identical twin. wendy drew and her sister pam were cast in you are what you eat. a twin experiment. pam became a vegan while wendy was allowed to eat meat. >> the diet assignment reveals. >> i'm excited to see my body transform. >> the only thing we had was

netflix. i don't care what i'm doing. >> in our case, not only do we have a built in best friend, but we also have a great partnership in business. >> months later, wendy's built in best friend is supporting her in the wake of an attack that happened a few nights ago in the financial district. despite being shaken up and swollen, she told us she isn't afraid to tell her story. some of what you are about to see might be a little bit rough to watch. >> reporter: surveillance cameras captured the moment a local chef featured on netflix fought for her life sunday night. wendy drew said it started when a man walking his dog called her a racial slur before attacking her. >> this guy looking normal walks by and he calls me the n word. why are you calling me that? he comes back into work. he starts plummeting. >> reporter: drew tried to

block the man's jabs. she was able to get ahold of him. >> call 911. call 911. i was holding the sky. i'm like i'm not letting you go. you are going to jail. >> reporter: drew fought back trying to block the front door. you can see the man leaving here before they arrive. customers, staff, and her boyfriend held him until police came. >> i got up and i'm like no. go after him wendy. just keep, go after him. >> reporter: police arrested 31-year-old irvin rivera lera, charging him with assault and a hate crime. last year he spent time in jail attacking the owner of another restaurant in san francisco. they think the attacks are premeditated and driven by hate. >> when he sees wendy, he sees a black woman. and what is a trigger word for black people? the n word. he is doing things to trigger people's emotions. >> reporter: now that the incident is behind her, drew and her sister are frightened

but more than that, they are angry and want to know why this happened. >> we have this profile of who is going to attack you. who is going to cause you harm. this guy did not fit that profile. >> reporter: while she recovers, drew wants the city and women especially to heed the story and stay alert. >> protect yourselves. >> all right, staying in san francisco, people who live and work in chinatown have been fighting to get crime under control. break-ins, robberies and hate driven attacks spiked up after the pandemic. and they have been making progress, but one of the biggest challenges has been the effort to boost trust between the community and police. but police have been doing just that at events like chinatown night out. the latest one happening tonight. our andrea nakano was there and spoke with chinatown leaders and the da about what needs to come next. >> this was the 10th annual chinatown night out. the police department realized this community needed an event of

its own. some say it helped. but more needs to be done. it was packed at portsmouth square as the community celebrated this event. her grandparents have owned a candy store in chinatown for 50 years. people, especially seniors, are starting to come out again after a rash of attacks just a couple of years ago. >> we were very fearful. we restricted ourselves from doing a lot of things. >> reporter: the seniors are less fearful now thanks to programs put in place by the city. one of them the ambassador program where retired police officers walk the streets. >> makes me feel they are safer here. i speak the language. i

call them, they call me. i'm trying to tell you. trying to help the community out. >> reporter: for him, he says it has been rewarding to come back home and help the community he was raised in. >> they really like us. they know that somebody is out there to watch over them. and that's the big thing we want to do. >> was not going to miss this. >> reporter: along with the ambassador program, the district attorney brooke jenkins took steps to protect the aapi community when she took office. establishing a vulnerable victims unit and creating a bilingual team to help the victims. >> these seniors and this community needed to know that i cared. that i was committed to making sure we addressed what was going on. that they were reporting to us what was happening and that made a world of difference. >> reporter: while seniors are feeling safer, she feels it's the businesses that are now

hurting the most. >> there are still bad people coming intuitiontown. into chinatown. people don't feel safe. >> the 17-year-old high school senior accused of shooting niners receiver ricky pearsall in san francisco appeared in court for the first time and his public defender said the teen is remorseful. >> he is genuinely sorry. young boy, 17 years old. all the media attention even nationwide media attention, that's a lot. >> the teen suspect from tracy was arraigned in juvenile court today. he is facing attempted murder charges along with a laundry list of gun related counts. the da says she still needs time to decide whether to transfer the case to adult court. police say the teen shot pearsall during an attempted

robbery this weekend in union square. he was arrested about a block away from where the shooting happened. tonight, people in one georgia community are leaning on each other for support after a shooting rampage broke out on a high school campus. two teachers and two students killed and nine injured. law enforcement says a freshman student was responsible and they revealed they already had an encounter with the teen just a few years ago. >> reporter: teenagers held hands and prayed as the community of winder georgia gathered for a vigil after a 14-year-old student opened fire at nearby apalachee high school. >> it is disgusting this would happen in our community. >> reporter: emergency vehicles rushed to the school after shots rang out at 10:23 a.m. the school went into lockdown and some students say they thought it was a drill until they heard gunshots. >> he started shooting like, like ten times. he shot at

least ten times. i saw one of my classmates on the ground bleeding so bad. >> in case you are wondering, this is not a drill. >> reporter: teachers and students barricaded themselves in classrooms until police say the suspect surrendered to school resource officers. >> i started getting scared and everybody in the class praying, crying. hoping nothing happens. >> reporter: class by class, police gutted 1900 student to the football field to reunite with their parents. but law enforcement had closed roads around the school and panicked parents said they abandoned their cars and ran miles to reach their children. josh rainer hopped on his motorcycle. >> i blew red lights and stop signs and drove on the opposite side of the road. i would do anything in the world to get to my son when he needs help. >> reporter: the suspect, colt gray, is expected to be charged with murder as an adult. federal investigators say gray was on their radar last year.

that is when law enforcement interviewed the teen and his father after being tipped off about a school shooting threat posted online. but investigators say they didn't have cause to arrest him. >> that could be connected to today's incident as well. >> today, vice president kamala harris spoke out about the school shooting while on the campaign trail in new hampshire while former president donald trump shared his reaction during a fox news town hall. >> sick and angry world for a lot of reasons. and we are going to make it better. we are going to heal our world. >> we have to end this epidemicover gun violence in our country once and for all. it doesn't have to be this way! it doesn't have to be this way. >> harris and trump are set to meet on the debate stage for the first time next tuesday. you can catch it live right here on kpix5. it starts at 6:00 p.m. in a letter to abc hosting

the debate, the harris campaign agreed to follow certain rules on stage to prevent trump from pulling out of the debate. though they agreed, her campaign seemed to take issue with the plan to mute mics when it isn't a candidate's turn to speak. still ahead, tonight, busting illegal operations. hiding in plain sight. >> they are relatively large houses. nice neighborhoods. they are hard to discover and easy to disguise. >> the bay area city that has become a hot bed for a specific kind of crime. plus, if you want a halloween costume that will make people do a double take, this might do the trick. the fast food joint going from rolling out burritos to rolling out a clothing collection.

one city in contra costa county has become a hot bed for illegal cannabis operations. today, california's department of cannabis control telling us they have uncovered more illegal grows in antioch than anywhere else except los angeles. one of those locations owned by an oakland police officer. katie nielsen is in antioch to explain why these operations are popping up in quiet little neighborhoods. >> it is pretty much my main thing here. >> reporter: roger thomas loves to tinker on projects in his garage keeping a watchful eye on the neighborhood. which is why he was so surprised to see three houses on his street still had power during a black-out a few years ago. >> every house on the block would be dark. except those three. it was my intention of going down there talking to them trying to figure out what did they have to keep their lights on? >> reporter: he tried to watch for people to come home, but

rarely saw anyone. >> it always was a white van. it would stay there a few minutes and next thing you know, it would be gone. and you wouldn't see nothing, you know, for quite some time. the house was like a ghost house. all three of them. >> reporter: the department of cannabis control shared this video from the april raid of one of those that was owned by an oakland police officer. inside it, jugs of chemicals and enough equipment to power this massive illegal marijuana grow. room after room filled with plants, grow lights, fans, and water systems. >> they are relatively large houses, they are nice neighborhoods. they are hard to discover. they are easy to disguise. >> reporter: kevin works on enforcement with dcc. he says antioch has become a hot bed of activity for those illegal grows because of the real estate market. the criminals running the operations can buy a large house for much less than the cost of a similarly

sized warehouse. once they get busted, they are immediately removing the grow equipment and selling the house at a profit. >> they can flip the house back. they are profiting about $200,000 per house they are selling. >> reporter: the illegal grow house that was owned by the oakland police officer was listed for sale at the end of july and a sign out front already says the sale is pending. the two other houses on the same street that were also raided? yep. they are for sale, too. >> those people who owned these homes just know that we are coming. we will shut you down and prosecute you. >> reporter: the illegal grow houses have been an issue in the community for years. partly because they are so difficult to identify. roger said he lived next to one for years without knowing it. >> it was a total shock to me. it goes to show you, you never know what goes on behind closed doors. >> as for the oakland police officer who owned one of the homes that was raided in antioch, he has not been charged in connection with the grow at this time. but he is on

paid administrative leave from the department. all right, things still heating up in our weather department. paul heggen is on the task of telling us when it might subside. >> by the weekend. so. >> that's perfect. >> it's nice we get a couple of days off. most folks get a couple of days off and temperatures return to normal so you don't cook as you try to do stuff outdoors. let's talk about what you need to know. another day to go with the heat advisory. inland heat continues through tomorrow. friday will be toasty as well. just not as hot. no record high temperatures expected tomorrow. inland parts of the east bay, normal temperatures in time for the weekend. so just make it for a couple more days. take a look at the air quality forecast, the same pattern that traps the heat also tends to trap urban pollution. today was another spare the air day.

tomorrow isn't. it is expected to be in the moderate category for all parts of the bay area and some improvement as we head into the weekend. by sunday, should be good across the board. temperatures back to the good category as well by that point. a lot of fog rolling in to parts of downtown san francisco. includes right around the trans america tower. temperatures in the 60s , 70s , and a few 50s in the map. 58 degrees in san francisco. 73 in livermore. that's part of the problem with these hot inland days. it just takes a while for the atmosphere to lose that heat that builds up. so with temperatures remaining mild overnight, it will take a little time. not much time at all for temperatures to heat up once the sun comes up tomorrow and the fog dissipates. let's bring the map onto the floor and talk about that fog. some of it out there by early tomorrow morning. but it is not going to last too long in the inland valleys. maybe long enough to slow down the warm up a little bit. but the fog isn't going to make a big push over the oakland hills inland in the east bay. which is why

your temperatures are going to be the hottest for the entire bay area. temperatures into the 90s and a few low 100s in the santa clara valley. 102 in morgan hill. 96 in san jose. a few degrees off the record high temperature. 8 degrees off tomorrow's record high temperatures. at least that is out of reach. 103 to 105 east of the oakland hills. low 90s for fremont and redwood city. low 70s along the coast. temperatures should return to the 70s in san francisco with the weaker on shore breeze. that is the part of the forecast that could go either way. temperatures could be confined to the 60s . temperatures in the mid to upper 90s by tomorrow afternoon. we turn to near average already by friday in san francisco. hovering near the average high temperature of 70. minor ups and downs further down the line. but no out of

control heat. even in the ten day outlook. you are much closer to average for the weekend. that is reasonably hot for early september and back to the 80s by tuesday and wednesday. a few clouds floating through next week. but any moisture in those clouds not likely to impact us. they will stay to the north with showers headed to the pacific northwest and far northern california. our temperatures are going to reach up into the low 70s along the coast. one more day. and you are back to the 60s as well. and back into the more persistent fog pattern as well. straight ahead in sports we have a no-no in baseball! and the giants tonight, made sure
