from a tragedy distinctly american -- gun violence. >> he started shooting like ten times. >> everybody in the class praying, crying. >> gunshots erupt inside a georgia high school sending students scrambling for safety. the accused shooter, just 14 years old, in custody. why did he do it? good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. just weeks into the new school year in georgia, and already senseless gun violence has taken innocent lives. we're learning more about the four people killed, two 14-year-old boys and two teachers. nine people were also wounded. the accused shooter also a 14-year-old boy. he's facing murder charges. and law enforcement now says they had him on their radar last year. the shooting happened in apalachee high school in winder, about an hour's drive from atlanta.

that is where we find cbs news' dave malkoff standing by with the latest on this tragic case. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. this is now the deadliest act of school violence in georgia history. when we arrived on scene yesterday the streets were locked down, parents were abandoning cars by the side of the road, leaving the doors swinging and coming running to get here to get to their kids. a community is in mourning after another unspeakable american tragedy. yesterday just before 10:30 a.m., police say a 14-year-old student carrying an ar-style rifle opened fire at apalachee high school located just about an hour outside of atlanta. >> the gunshots were so close to me. like my ears started ringing real bad. like the whole classroom was smoking. i had saw one of my classmates on the ground bleeding so bad. >> reporter: students and teachers barricaded themselves in classrooms.

>> you could hear gunshots ringing out. you wondered which one is going to be somebody that you're best friends with or somebody that you love. >> reporter: the suspected shooter identified as colt gray was taken into custody alive. later roughly 1,900 students were escorted out of the school and onto the football field where they reunited with their families. >> when someone preys on kids it's tragic. >> reporter: we learned the names of the two 14-year-olds who were killed. mason schwermerhorn and christian angulo, also killed were two math teachers. christina irimie and richard aspenwall. eight other students and one teacher had gunshot wounds but are expected to survive. and here is a major part of the investigation they will be look -- looking at today. the fbi says the suspect and his father were both interviewed by jackson county sheriff's officials last year after they had online anonymous threats

that they had received about a school shooting. but anne-marie, the fbi says that at that point, or jackson county sheriffs say at that point they did not have probable cause to make an arrest. >> dave malkoff in winder, georgia. thank you so much, dave. the school shooting was also a topic on the campaign trail. vice president kamala harris, who supports stronger gun control measures, said it's outrageous parents have to send their kids to school not knowing if they'll come home alive. >> end this epidemic of gun violence in our country once and for all. you know, it doesn't have to be this way. >> former president donald trump wrote on social media, quote, our hearts are with the victims and loved ones of those affected by the tragic event. today donald trump will be in new york city to tout his economic agenda. one day after kamala harris rolled out her plans for small businesses. and it comes as the biden administration is a accusing

russia of an elaborate propaganda campaign to sway voters, enlisting right-wing influencers who unknowingly worked for a company that was a front for a russian operation. jarred hill is joining us with the details on this. >> reporter: yeah, this is fascinating. the doj is focusing on this sophisticated russian disinformation campaign as the candidates are focusing on the economy because as polls show, the road to the white house goes straight through the wallets of everyday americans. [ cheers ] vice president kamala harris in new hampshire wednesday unveiled a plan to let new small businesses write off $50,000 in startup costs. up from the current $5,000. also proposing new interest-free loans for small companies. there's no price tag on the proposal that would need congressional signoff. in a town hall on fox news in battleground pennsylvania, former president donald trump leaned on his record -- >> i gave you the biggest tax cuts in the history of our country.

[ applause ] >> reporter: he's proposing to end taxes on tips and social security benefits and wants to cut the corporate tax rate to 15%. the messaging from the candidates as the department of justice accused two russian officials with the state-controlled outlet rt of spreading misinformation. >> the american people are entitled to know when a foreign power is attempting to exploit our country's free exchange of ideas. >> reporter: the putin-directed campaign designed to use phony news stories and target social media influencers to push polarizing issues, including inflation, job loss for white americans, privileges for people of color, threat of crime from people of color, and to target an audience of lower and middle-class white americans as supporters of candidate a. the attorney general indicated that was trump. the russian state-owned media company called the allegations scare mongering. now the doj is not implying a connection between trump and this russian information campaign.

good information there. meanwhile, trump and harris are going to be working on sharpening their messaging over the next couple of days with the rules now set for the next debate next week. the campaign agreed that mics will be muted when the candidate is not speaking. >> all right. jarred hill in new york. thank you. jury selection in hunter biden's federal tax evasion case is set to begin today in los angeles in a federal court. president biden's son has pleaded not guilty to charges of failing to pay $1.4 million in taxes. he faces up to 17 years in prison if convicted. in a separate case, hunter biden was convicted on three felony gun charges earlier this year. and now to israel. a country still reeling from the recent killings of those six hostages including an american. the israeli military released video it says shows the tunnel where images apes's -- hostages'

bodies were recovered. the army says the tunnel shaft was located next to stuffed toys and cartoon wall art in a children's play area. their murders sparked a fourth night of protests as israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu remains defiant on his stance on an issue that has threatened to derail the cease-fire talks. cbs' elizabeth palmer asked him about the criticism. >> reporter: these protests carry a clear message to one man -- israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu. do a deal with hamas and bring the hostages home. is he feeling the pressure? if so, it didn't show at a press conference where he lectured foreign reporters on geography. >> this is the entire arab world. and this is israel. >> reporter: netanyahu insists the israeli military has to stay in gaza to seal the southern border against hamas smuggling in weapons. but for hamas, that's a non-starter. it insists on a full military

withdrawal. >> so people said, yeah, but if you stay this will kill the deal. and i say, such a deal will kill us. >> reporter: president biden said you were not doing enough to reach a hostage deal. how do you interpret that, and what's your response? >> i think i've already answered that. i'm just talking about the facts. as we've achieved the release of more than half the hostages, and more, a lot more than half of the living hostages. >> reporter: netanyahu made it clear that in his view he's doing plenty. >> i'm committed to getting them out, all of them, all of them. >> reporter: but as long as he refuses to budge on withdrawing israel's military from the border, there will be no hostage release, and there will be more tragedies like this one. this 9-year-old still wearing her beloved roller skates, was killed by shrapnel after an israeli air strike in central gaza. elizabeth palmer, cbs news. extreme heat continues to scorch the west. record-breaking temperatures

new film footage has emerged of president john f. kennedy's motorcade rushing to a dallas hospital just moments after he was shot in 1963. the images have been in the possession of the family of the late texas businessman who filmed it. it shows a secret service agent standing over kennedy who cannot be seen in the speeding limo. the film will be auctioned off later on this month.

a florida patient dies after a mistake during surgery, and a suspect in ricky pearsall's shooting appears in court. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the san francisco chronicle" reports the attorney for the teenager charged with attempted murder in the shooting of 49ers rookie wide receiver ricky pearsall says the boy is very sorry it happened. the 17-year-old suspect made his first courtroom appearance yesterday. prosecutors are deciding whether he should be tried in adult court. authorities say pearsall was walking alone, carrying shopping bags saturday when he was shot in the chest during an attempted robbery. he was released from the hospital the next day. "the boston globe" says police in gloucester, massachusetts, investigating the beating a transgender teenager as a possible hate crime. 16-year-old jaden tkaczyk was beaten allegedly by as many as a dozen other high school students at a party last friday. he says that they attacked him,

called him homophobic slurs, and chased him into the woods. >> hitting me. they were calling me the f slur over and over. each punch they would say it. >> he was taken to the hospital for injuries that included a broken bone under his right eye. he says that he's been bullied for years because he's transgender. no arrests have been made. and the "pensacola news journal" says an alabama man died in a florida hospital after a surge in allegedly -- surgeon allegedly removed the wrong organ from his body during surgery. 70-year-old bill bryan was admitted to a hospital last month because of suspected problems with his spleen. the bryan family's attorney says dr. thomas shaknovsky mistakenly removed the man's liver on the opposite side of his bode instead of his spleen causing him to bleed to death. police said the hospital is investigating.
