on fire. owner brian altwarf is concerned adding a homeless shelter in the area would drive badly needed business away. >> i don't think it's a good idea. i think jack london square is a beautiful place and if you bring the homeless shelter down here, people aren't going to come down and have the and i think it's just going to make it harder for oakland. >> reporter: marcus hardware has been in the family since the 1920s. brian is a fourth generation business owners and his daughter hopes to carry on that legacy. >> my daughter who is 7 wants to work hearing, too. i've done everything in this store, daddy. i'm like okay, keep it up, but your job is school. go to school and learn. >> reporter: a group of business owners gathered thursday outside the jack london inn, the site of the proposed 110-room homeless shelter. many say they're struggling to keep their doors

open, including dorcea white, co-owner of everett and jones barbecue. >> it's not that i'm antihomeless, you know, but i do think -- i'm looking for a walkable area. i'm thinking of bringing in something here that would draw crowds. >> reporter: former police chief leronne armstrong organized a group of business owners he claims the city wasn't transparent with its plan to build a homeless shelter in the middle of a shopping and entertainment district. >> we have to have a comprehensive strategy on how we're going to address our homeless population. there are several abandoned residential locations in the city of oakland that could be converted into some type of transitional housing. i think when we make these decisions, we have to be mindful of the communities that we're impacting. >> reporter: carol altwarg can marcus hardware says she loves oakland and is committed to keeping her business open. she just hopes the city will reconsider its plans so her store can thrive for decades to come. >> i would like to see it go

somewhere else. i think it's needed but not in an area that's supposed to be the jewel of oakland. >> reporter: jack london square is in council member carol fife's district. we reached out to her for comment but did not hear back tonight. the city issued a response saying it did hold a community meeting and is currently reviewing the feedback. tonight city leaders in santa cruz are accusing a police department almost 200 miles away of abandoning a disabled woman in their city. so the city claims the officers worked in hanford, a city in the san joaquin valley, and drove all the way to santa cruz to drop her off. as zoe hunt reports, santa cruz says it wants answers and to take action to prevent something like this from happening again. >> reporter: the city of santa cruz alleges in late june two hanford police officers changed into civilian clothing to make

the 181-mile drive here with a disabled homeless woman, her wheelchair, and belongings, leaving her behind at the armory shelter. city mayor fred keely says no prior communication was given and he says they're now being stonewalled by hanford. >> chief escalante asked that they come back and pick that person up because we had no prior arrangement. the sergeant said they're not coming back and hung up. >> reporter: santa cruz says they work hard to protect the homeless in their own community, especially those who became homeless here. they believe other cities should do the same. >> we can't just take somebody's civil liberties away and put them into a vehicle and transport them anywhere, let alone another community. >> the hanford pd's conduct was not only irresponsible, but it was also inhumane. >> reporter: while santa cruz believes hanford is trying to place their homeless problem in another city's hands -- >> i think that it is very

clear that hanford saw santa cruz as a place they could dump a homeless person with impunity and they're wrong. >> reporter: hanford police refute these allegations. in a statement they say, "we strongly disagree with the city of santa cruz's assessment that the city of hanford is moving its homeless problem elsewhere. in this instance officers provided a service at the request of the individual. moving forward santa cruz city council will be taking up a new ordinance on tuesday that will make it illegal for anyone to perform this kind of dropoff incident without communication." in the wake of the georgia school shooting that left four people dead and nine injured, the father of the 14-year-old suspect has been arrested. investigators claim colin gray told them he had purchased the air 15 rifle that was used in the killings as a christmas present for his son. >> these charges stem from mr.

gray knowingly allowing his son colt to possess a weapon. >> 54-year-old colin gray faces several charges, including involuntary manslaughter and second degree murder. >> he is in custody at this point in time. his charges are directly connected with the actions of his son. >> thursday classes were canceled at apalachee high school outside atlanta while mourners gathered to leave flowers. >> i just hope that the shooter finds god and that god forgives what they did. >> isaiah hooks, a player on the school football team, remembers his coach, 39-year-old richard aspinwall, who was killed. >> i wish it was all just a dream. i mean me and my team, me and my friends, we could all wake up and it's just still wednesday morning and nothing, none of this had ever really happened. >> 14-year-old christian angulo and mason schermerhorn were

killed along with cristina irimie who taught algebra. the 14-year-old alleged gunman has been charged with murder. he's expected to appear in court friday. deputies first questioned the gray family in 2023 after the fbi received anonymous tips about online school shooting threats posts on an app called discord. the investigation didn't lead to any charges, but a recording of the interview with the father was released tonight. >> you have weapons in the house? >> i do. >> are they accessible to him? >> they are. i mean there's nothing loaded, but they are down. we actually do a lot of shooting. we do a lot of deer hunting. he shot his first deer this year, like i'm pretty much in shock to being honest with you. i'm a little mad to be even really mad with you. if that is what was said. >> if convicted on the second degree murder charges, 54-year-old colin gray could face up to 30 years in prison. back here in the bay area,

we have an update on a story we first brought you last night. a san francisco man accused of calling a chef a racial slur before physically attacking her is now facing hate crime charges. we spoke to chef wendy drew yesterday about that attack that happened sunday in a liquor store that left her swollen and bruised. now d.a. brooke jenkins is charging the 31-year-old suspect with assault and battery with hate crime allegations tacked on. we have been bringing you the personal stories of san francisco's top mayoral candidates off the campaign trail. our lauren toms spent time at the home of the incumbent, london breed. >> i remember this day when i took this picture. i remember crying because i didn't want to wear this shirt. it's a shirt i wore almost every day. so it was like i want to wear a different shirt. i mean even at 5 i was a piece of work, but i didn't understand that we didn't have it to go buy new shirts for picture day. it was like you're going to wear what

fortunately, no one was injured. they then had to haul it off the road on a flatbed truck. speaking of weird things that happen on the road, that's why i'm bringing you in on this story, when you look at this video, you'll see that. you might wonder what possibly went wrong? >> how many things went wrong? >> how many things? today in virginia the raised bed of a tractor trailer hit a sign hanging high above a highway. it separated from the cab, stadium right standing up against the crushed sign. luckily, no one was injured in this shall we call it bizarre crash. >> why was it raised that high to begin with? >> i don't know. i hope it wasn't the guy's first day on the job either, one of those stories. >> like the photographers that drive with the mast up on the live truck. >> that's never happened here. it's finally starting to cool down in the bay area after a very hot week, but scientists say summer 2024 was the hottest in recorded history, breaking

the records set just last year. in fact, data shows that the summer in the northern hemisphere between june and august was the hottest since 1940. i want to get my facts verified from meteorologist paul heggen. is that right? we're talking the hottest on record? >> yes. there's different agencies that evaluate that kind of stuff. they're call coming in saying -- >> what does your agency say? >> number one with a bullet. this is the hottest. >> that's it. >> that's it. noaa does their analysis, nasa, european agencies. they're all saying yeah, it was really hot. >> we verify it with you. >> and it's hot now, maybe not right at this very second, but hot weather pattern across the bay area continuing one more day of this heat dome hanging onto the bay area, large area of high pressure stretched out into a couple different hills of air overhead impressing the air at ground level and that heats it up for one more day. there's a little ripple off

the coast kicking in a stronger onshore breeze helping to reduce the weight of the atmosphere on top of us and allowing the marine layer to get deeper and steer wildfire smoke away from the bay area. there's smoke from the coffeepot fire, the boone fire, the bear fire in the northern sierra, but the onshore breeze that will be getting stronger will direct the bulk of the smoke away from the bay area. occasionally there will be a little haze on the horizon. ground level air quality will continue to improve. today and tomorrow are not spare the air alert days. we should be into good air quality by the second half of the weekend. now looking towards downtown, treasure island showing fog in the distance and we see the fog from sutro tower. the fog is on the move. it's a shallow fog, but it will progress across the bay through the rest of tonight. temperatures still in the low 70s in concord and livermore, retreating to the 50s in san francisco and santa

rosa, 60s now in oakland and san jose dropped off the map at 11:00, but i assume temperatures there also are in the 60s. let's look at how the fog will behave through the rest of tonight. it's going to be that shallow layer of fog pushing across the bay and into the santa clara valley, inland valleys of the north bay, but other than the intrusion into the delta it won't make much progress into the interior valleys of the east bay. the sun's energy will go directly into the heating up the air there as opposed to dissipating the fog and temperatures there will be the hottest across the bay area, not quite as hot as today, but still some of the hottest locations getting up to around or just short of 100 degrees. antioch at 100, 99 degrees in livermore, 3 degrees cooler than today, san jose topping out in the low 90s, so a step downward, but still hot enough we have a heat advisory for all inland parts of the bay area tomorrow. it expires at 8:00 and after that we're out

of the woods. low 70s in san francisco. temperatures in the north bay mostly topping out in the low 90s, not quite as hot as the inland parts of the east bay because the presence of the fog will help put the brakes on the warm-up and slow it down enough we should be able to stay out of the mid- to even upper 90s. look at the seven-day forecast and temperatures are going to return to close to normal over the weekend, maybe 2 or 3 degrees above average still for inland parts of the bay area, but reasonably hot. then we settle into a normal temperature pattern for most of next week, some passing clouds tuesday and wednesday as the storm system misses us to the north, close enough for a few clouds but not a decent chance of showers. temperatures around the bay return to the 70s after one more day around 80 degrees tomorrow. the free air conditioning will be back in place already tomorrow evening. temperatures along the coast stay in the 60s with plenty of fog, mist, drizzle returning to coastal parts of the bay area over the weekend into early

no doubt getting your first phone is a big moment, but this 12-year-old boy in arizona never could have imagined what happened just months after he got his first cell phone. this week lincoln shrek started getting hundreds of text messages meant for someone else. you know who it was meant for? 49ers rookie ricky pearsall. what? turns out his new phone has pearsall's old phone number. how? pearsall is still recovering after being shot in the chest in an attempted robbery in union square. he happened to go to high school in tempe, arizona. that's when he had his old phone number. so old friends tried to send their well wishes and texted the 12-year-old instead. the boy says he wants pearsall to know the former classmates are thinking of him. >> i was responding wrong number to as many as i could and after a couple of them, one
