gun used to fire warning signs and the panic button that likely saved lives. surprise move. hunter biden pleads guilty to federal tax charges just as his trial was to get under way. why the change of heart? september swelter. the temperatures soar into the triple digits out west, breaking records. when they could see some relief. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we start with the stunning twist in the georgia high school mass shooting. the father of the 14-year-old suspect is now also under arrest. police believe he bought the weapon for his son just months after law enforcement officials came to their home to investigate an online threat. the teen suspect is set to make his first court appearance today on murder charges. cbs' jarred hill is joining us with the latest on this investigation. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. cbs news has learned a search of the 14-year-old suspect's home

showed that he had an interest in previous school shootings. now as authorities continue to try and figure out just how this tragedy happened, investigators say they have evidence that his father bears some of the blame. a stunning new twist in the georgia school shooting. authorities have arrested the father of the 14-year-old accused of killing four people at apalachee high school. colin gray is being charged with second-degree murder as well as multiple counts of involuntary manslaughter and cruelty to children. >> these charges stem from mr. gray knowingly allowing his son colt to possess a weapon. >> reporter: investigators say the 54-year-old bought the ar-style gun used in the shook -- the shooting as a gift for his son colt. the teen has been charged as an adult. >> you never think something like this would ever happen, not here. >> reporter: now the community is coming together to heal and mourn the loss of two 14-year-old freshmen, christian angulo and mason schermerhorn. ester mathias is christian's

classmate. >> he was a very sweet kid. he did not deserve this. >> reporter: an eyewitness said 53-year-oldal teacher christina irimie died after jumping in front of a student to protect him. 39-year-old football coach richard aspinwall was also killed. >> i wish it was all just a dream. i mean, me and my team, me and my friends, we could wake up. >> reporter: according to an incident report from the jackson county sheriff's office, they interviewed the suspect and his father last year regarding anonymous posts threatening another school on the online platform discord under a user name referring to the 2012 sandy hook gunman. at the time the suspect denied making the threats, and deputies determined there was not enough probable cause to make an arrest. so going back to the victims here, of the nine who were hospitalized with gunshot wounds, at least seven have been released, and all are expected to make a full recovery, anne-marie. >> jarred hill in new york. thank you. president biden addressed the shooting yesterday saying

that it is time for the nation to enact common sense gun laws like universal background checks and requiring safe storage of firearms. >> we cannot continue to accept the carnage of gun violence. some of my republican friends in congress have to say enough is enough, we have to do something. together let's ban assault weapons. >> authorities say teachers at the georgia high school pressed new panic buttons attached to their i.d. badges allowing officers to respond quickly and liely save lives. the system has only been in place at the school for a week. several states have passed legislation called alissa's law requiring schools to be equipped with silent panic alarms linked to law enforcement. the law is named after a student who was killed in the 2018 parkland school massacre. a big surprise in hunter biden's federal tax trial. the president's son pleaded guilty yesterday to nine tax-related charges, avoiding a lengthy and potentially embarrassing trial. but the younger biden now faces

prison time. cbs' scott macfarlane has details. >> reporter: hunter biden, who was convicted by a jury in delaware in june of unlawfully possessing a gun, is trying to avoid a second criminal trial this year. he's charged in california with allegedly scheming to avoid paying at least $1.4 million in income taxes. but in a surprise move ahead of jury selection, biden's attorneys acknowledged the evidence is overwhelming, and offered for biden to plead guilty. >> hunter decided to enter his plea to protect those he loves from unnecessary hurt and cruel humiliation. hunter put his family first today. >> reporter: an unorthodox, unexpected move in the federal court system where guilty pleas typically come with plenty of warning and only after negotiations and agreement with the prosecutors. >> among the many things that were unusual today is the fact that it appears that what hunter biden is offering is to plead

guilty to all the charges but in exchange for nothing. >> reporter: at first prosecutors protested because in biden's initial offer today his attorneys said he'd plead guilty but wouldn't accept full responsibility for the crime. biden already faces prison time for the gun conviction earlier this year when he's sentenced in mid november, and now faces the prospect of additional time behind bars even with a finalized guilty plea in the tax case. earlier this summer the president said this about the idea of a pardon -- >> i'd abide by the jury decision and i will do that, and i will not pardon him. >> reporter: because hunter biden's tax case and gun case are federal cases, president biden would have the authority to issue a commutation or a pardon. scott macfarlane, cbs news, washington. a new york judge is expected to announce today whether donald trump will be sentenced in his hush-money criminal case later this month. trump has tried to have the sentencing delayed after his conviction on 34 counts of falsifying business records to

cover up payments to a porn star during the 2016 presidential campaign. and trump may be in court today for his appeal of a $5 million jury verdict that found him liable of sexually abusing magazine columnist e. jean carroll. as for the presidential campaign, donald trump laid out a number of his economic proposals yesterday, and it included a task force to conduct a financial and performance audit of the federal government led by tech billionaire elon musk. cbs' robert costa has the details. it will be a national economic renaissance -- >> reporter: former president donald trump held out his vision for the economy and had sharp criticism of vice president kamala harris. >> comrade kamala harris wants to sacrifice our wealth, kill the economy, and drive jobs overseas to punish businesses more. >> reporter: trump claims a second-term agenda would include lowering the corporate tax rate, slashing regulations to boost

energy production, and imposing tariffs and tax penalties on companies that don't produce in the u.s. vice president harris by contrast has said she would raise the corporate tax rate from 21% to 28%. >> billionaires and big corporations must pay their fair share in taxes. [ cheers ] >> reporter: trump also embraced a government efficiency commission pushed by billionaire supporter elon musk who has called for a complete audit of the federal government. >> elon because he's not very busy has agreed to head that task force. be interesting. if he has the time. a good one to do it. but he's agreed to do it. >> reporter: harris made her way to pittsburgh where she will focus on debate prep ahead of tuesday's clash with trump in philadelphia. there will be no studio audience, candidates cannot question one another, and their microphones will be muted while the other is speaking. the former president lashed out at the host network and falsely claimed harris would get the

questions in advance. >> abc is the worst network in terms of fairness. they are the most dishonest network. the meanest, the nastiest. but that was what i was presented with. >> reporter: sources close to both campaigns say they're focusing in prep on trying to draw the other contender out and bring them into controversial territory on certain issues. robert costa, cbs news, new york. of course we will have complete coverage of the presidential debate on tuesday starting at 8:00 p.m. eastern here on cbs followed by a live simulcast of the debate and cbs expert analysis. turning to the extreme heat now across the west. phoenix reached 116 degrees yesterday. that is now 56 days this year above 110. the most on record. burbank, california, reached 114 degrees, tying its record high for any day in september

colleges, and an investigation into new york mayor's closing in on his inner circle. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the new york times" reports new york city mayor eric adams is facing crisis as federal investigators zero in on the highest ranks of his administration. federal agents raided the homes and seized the phones of the new york city police commissioner, the first deputy mayor, the school's chancellor, and others, according to people familiar with the matter. the nature of the investigations is unclear, and none are accused of any crime. these actions are unrelated to a separate corruption inquiry focused on adams' campaign fundraising. he's denied any wrongdoing. the bbc says a french woman who was allegedly drugged by her now-ex-husband so dozens of men could rape her testified in court about her years long ordeal. the now 72-year-old woman who has agreed to appear in public described in detail the horror

of learning from police in 2020 they found thousands of photos and videos on her husband's computer of men appearing to rape her while she was unconscious. her former husband and 50 other men are on trial for rape. and the "associated press" says some colleges are reporting a drop in the number of black students in their freshman classes after the supreme court struck down affirmative action in higher education. it is the first indication of the impact of the high court's ruling barring consideration of race in admissions. several schools also reported swings in the numbers of asian, hispanic, and native american students, but other universities said the share of black students was about the same. ahead, lunar discovery. material found on the surface of the moon reveals new clues about its past.

a new discovery on the moon is revealing details about its past. an analysis of tiny glass beads brought back from the lunar surface by a chinese spacecraft indicates volcanos were still erupting until about 120 million years ago when dinosaurs roamed the earth. scientists had thought they ended billions of years ago. boeing's troubled "starliner" space capsule is set to return to earth today from the international space station but without its crew. nasa thinks that it's too risky to bring two astronauts home on "starliner" after it experienced thruster engine problems in june. they'll come back on a spacex capsule instead. but that won't happen until next february. ticketmaster is under fire again, and the nation's biggest airlines facing questions about its reward programs. carissa lawson has today's cbs "moneywatch."

>> reporter: stocks struggled thursday ahead of today's highly anticipated august jobs report that's expected to play a pivotal role in the fed's widely expected interest rate cut later this month. the dow lost 219 points. the nasdaq gained 43 points, but the s&p 500 dropped 16. the federal government is investigating the frequent flyer programs of the nation's four largest airlines. transportation secretary pete buttigieg says they want to make sure american, delta, southwest, and united airlines are not shortchanging passengers out of their miles or reward points. travelers complained that the airlines raised the number of points needed to earn a free flight. ticketmaster is again under scrutiny about its pricing practices, this time over the sale of next year's reunion concert of the '90 band oasis. the uk's competition watchdog launched an investigation after fans complained they waited on

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ the super bowl champion kansas city chiefs opened their season with a thrilling 27-20 win over the baltimore ravens last night. the game came down to the final play when the ravens' isaiah likely went for a winning touchdown but officials then found that his toes were out of bounds. pop star taylor swift joined the nearly 80,000 fans at arrowhead stadium. she was there to cheer on chiefs and her boyfriend travis kelce.
