francisco's district attorney and now he wants her job. tonight meet the candidate who says he would do things very differently if he were district attorney. and the movie-inspire sand castle that came out on top in the bay area competition. we'll begin tonight in oakland's china town full of family-owned businesses. some of them open for decades. but concerns about crime have cut down on foot traffic and forced many to close early. but tonight the streets were busy for the neighborhood's first ever night market. our amanda harry was there. >> the city of oakland is trying to bring life back to the china town area and this event is doing just that. you can see how lively it is right now. they say post covid it had become run down here. oakland's china town

transformed into a night market with street food, cultural markets and street music. but it took a lot of work to get here. >> it feels special to be part of this kind of revitalize alization. >> -- revitalization. >> the director of the art group says he spent weeks cleaning up 8th street from broadway to webster and beautifying it with murals and art installations. >> i went all in to try to change the look and feel of 8th street. >> he is half chinese. growing up his parents would take him to china town every weekend. but over the years, it's changed. >> kind of fallen on hard times. there's been a lot of blight and crime and i think there's a lot of fear. to see it going through these hardships is hard for me. as a kid, it wasn't like that. >> when he heard about the concept for a night market, he anyhow -- he knew he had to be

a part of it. >> this is a personal pride for me. i'm an oakland guy and oakland resident and i just really want to give back to china town and the chinese people in any way i can. >> and william feels the same way. >> oakland is the first my town, my place. i want to put this on the map. >> he immigrated from china to oakland in the 60's and never left. he came out of retirement to volunteer at this event and created the dumpling olympics. people formed a long line down the street to try all 6 dumplings and vote for their favorite. >> the food speaks. when your tummy is full, you're happy. >> reno sway is hoping it's just the beginning of big things for china town. >> it feels like a huge blessing to see this happen in oakland. >> organizers say based on the success of this night market, they may make it a quarterly or even monthly event. >> more side shows in oakland early today with cars spinning dangerously close to a crowd of spectators and smoking up the intersection. this is on empire street and 98th avenue which is close to the hagenberger corridor where a number of businesses left because of crime. this side show blobeding the roadway -- blocked the roadway for almost an hour. a security guard was stabbed on the job while trying to prevent a theft. it happened yesterday at the walgreens on montgomery street near the financial district. officers say a suspect was trying to take items from the store when the guard confronted him and the suspect stabbed him. the guard was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries and so far police haven't made an arrest. new details tonight about that deadly shooting in georgia. 2 students and 2 teachers were killed. hundreds attended a vigil last night. tonight dave spoke to the grandfather of the teen suspect who had new information about

what happened the morning of the killings. >> the maternal grandfather of accused shooter colt gray is dealing with conflicting emotions. love for his grandson and disgust over the crime he's accused of committing. >> he pulled the triggers. he killed the people. and he's my grandson and it breaks my damn hart. >> the 14-year-old who has not yet entered a plea was charged friday with involuntary manslaughter and second degree murder. new tonight, cbs news has learned of a text message between the suspect and his mother, marcy gray, on the morning of the mass shooting. >> marcy got a text on the phone from colt saying "i'm sorry, mother." and then we heard on the news of the shooting. >> the family has also revealed colt's maternal grandmother was at the school the day before the shooting. >> they were having some problems with him not going to school and this kind of thing. >> the georgia bureau of investigation said the boy's

father, collin gray, bought the ar-style rifle for his teen, the same weapon seen on the floor the day of the shooting. since wednesday's tragedy, there have been a wave of threats across georgia and they have now arrested 13 juveniles and one adult accused of making threats to school in at least 8 different counties. friday the fbi deemed the majority of the social media threats non-credible and warned posts like these will be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. >> in other news, it is safe to say the june 27th debate between joe biden and donald trump was pivotal to this year's race. >> more than 30 congressional democrats are calling for president biden to step aside, even as his campaign insists he isn't going anywhere. >> president biden dropped the

haul for august pulling in 360 million dollars. nearly triple what trump raised. with with a substantial amount coming from first-time donors. >> back here at home, a man who was fired by san francisco district attorney brook jenkins is now running to unseat her in the election. he's a former prosecutor and said he can do a better job than his former boss and we spoke with both candidates today. >> two prosecutors with two different approaches to achieve public safety, but d.a. brook jenkins and the challenger do agree on one thing. public safety is the number one issue. >> we're proposing a better vision for public safety here in san francisco that responsibly balances accountability with rehabilitation. >> we are making strides in reducing crime in this city and we need to be able to sustain that. >> cojastay says if elected

he'd go after violent and repeat offenders. for low level offenders and first time he'd likely offer treatment. >> you commit a crime, we're going to file charges. now the the question is what does justice look like? in many cases it can be jail. it can be prison. in many cases if it's a mental health issue or substance abuse issue, we can get someone treatment that's proven and make sure they don't commit future crimes because they actually get the help they need and are stabilized. >> many people view him as the progressive option to jenkins, but he doesn't like that label, especially after voters recalled the progressive d.a. mudean who hired him as a prosecutor in 2020. >> just because you work for somebody, doesn't mean we are that person. we should all be afforded the same opportunity to present our platforms and our vision for public safety. >> i want people understand the difference between my opponent and i. one, this is a person who is really chase muldean 2.0 to be

honest and subscribes to the same belief system that the recalled d.a. put into place that got us into this mess that our city was in. >> jenkins says that is why she fired him and many of the hires right after she took office. after the fire, he went on to work for the alameda d.a. price. he said he left the job last month to focus on his campaign. but jenkins said he at 30 years old lacks experience and is unqualified. >> we have a winner! >> she believes she deserves another term because san francisco is safer under her leadership. she's made retail and property crime a priority and is focused on crushing the open-air drug markets in the tender loin and locked up many drug dealers and offered tough love solutions to drug dealers but said change will take more time in office. >> we finally have a district attorney in san francisco that is being able to work collaboratively not only with city hall, but with other law enforcement agencies which is something we haven't had in

. >> tonight in southern california, a wildfire more than doubled in size to over 7,000 acres today. it forced 500 people out of their homes in san bernardino county. fire is burning so intensely

it's creating its own weather with erratic winds pushing the fire along. and on the subject of weather, darren, it's september. we're supposed to be heading into some of the most pleasant weather of the year on the coast line but now you say we'll do another 180? >> well, we're going to get a nice cool down if you're inland. we'll bring the temperatures down. but there are -- i mean the story you just covered, brian, that is a very intense fire. the part of the story to go along with that is intense heat and downtown l.a. that sits on a coastal plain hit 112° for the official daytime high yesterday in downtown l.a. there's a very intense center of heat over southern california right now which is playing a large role in what is going on with the fires down 24r. meanwhile here at home, we just got a break. we did have heat advisories that stayed in effect until last night at 8 and now they're

done. and we're about to get better cooling. look at tomorrow's marine layer with the view on this. when you see that take a familiar shape, that's san francisco bay right there only in cloud form! you can see san pablo bay is covered and follows the contours and sneaks down here and that's beautiful! and this shows you the marine layer will be with us tomorrow when with you wake up and melt back to the beaches and then pretty much be done by the the time we get done with the rest of the day. if you look at what comes for daytime hies, i want you to see how this plays out in terms of daytime highs for tomorrow and if we have that close up look on the line, look! it's summer! 50's in pacifickera. 60's in the city. 70's -- in pacifica, 60's in the city and then bam, in the 80's. some are a little below average.

san francisco should be around 71 this time of the year. but because of that marine influence you're above average. the clouds didn't get over the hills and concord not quite getting the benefit of that yet but you're like 10° above average and let's do better than just looking at this line. i love this line! it really does illustrate how the microclimates work depending on your influtes of the bay. but think about that for a moment and just see what daytime highs actually look like here for tomorrow. let's get in something more representative view on this with north bay numbers in the mid 90s tomorrow and san jose. your numbers in the upper 80's. this is tomorrow. skip ahead now and get ahead to the 7 day forecast and see the cool down for the microclimates, particularly starting with the inland

microclimate. these are the the east bay inland. monday you're still 90's but by tuesday and wednesday you drop by 10 degrees here. that's 7-8 degrees below average. you'll be there for a few days and warm back up again. it's not crazy. you'll warm back up but only to a couple of degrees. san jose, not quite as cool as the bay or hot as inland but where temperatures will be and round this out by checking in on san francisco and see what your numbers look like as well and get to that some other time. for now back to you. >> thanks, darren. coming up the bears picked up a big road upset over an sec foe. plus aaron rogers coming to town! they got the jets and we're getting you ready for the season opener.

. >> first 2 games of the nfl season could not have been more exciting but we have to wait for monday for the niners to take the field. to watch out christian mcafrey is officially open as of tonight. on the defensive side of the ball, the key will be putting pressure on aaron rodgers. he won't be very mobile. after all he did injury his achilles in one of 4 snaps a year ago. the niners invested in leonard floyd. he's the guy that sacked rodgers on the play and he'll go opposite nick and two combined for 21 sacks last year. the last time he faced the niners, that's rodgers, hit the turf 9 times in the 2022 post season game and if they pressure him this time around,

enough for this top 5. this is friday night. a jack rabbit interrupted the duke-northwestern game. northwestern mascot called upon to scare him off. eventually the little rabbit went on about his night. duke went on to win this one in double overtime. and notre dame needed a field goal to avoid disaster. instead it's blocked as time expires and northern illinois pulls off the upset of the day 16-14! winners over the irish! here's the worst part. notre dame paid the northern illinois program 1.4 million dollars to play this game. huskies left south bend with the bag and a win. nothing like getting paid to basically take a loss and then you upset number 5 in the country. >> why did they pay them to play them? >> early in -- notre dame, a big school, wants a win. so they say come on down. we'll pay you because you're a bad program and then they flip the script. >> why didn't they pay us? we could go! >> you and i could have gone
