from cbs news bay area this is evening edition. >> now at 11:00, a fire running through the community tonight, driving thousands from their homes and threatening people in an area that it is all too familiar it is devastating. over 60%, 60% of lake county's landmass has burned since 2015. tonight our prayers are with the neighbors here in clear lake. and the residents of lake

county. >> then, crime is top of agenda to be the race of san francisco's next mayor. how bad is it and what can we ex ect to hear from the candidates in this week's debate. also, how a new east bay farmer's market is making a positive impact on former prisoner in. we begin in clear lake where 4,000 people are under evacuation orders playing out in san francisco. destroyed at least 30 buildings along with 40-50 vehicles of the first call on the fire came after 2:00 there afternoon. what began as a brush fire spread to well over 90 acres. 4,000 people rushed from evacuation zones, firefighters say that weather conditions made it tough to help the evacuees. >> we had 10 mile-an-hour winds, we at one point in time, some of the areas we had 500 foot flame lengths, when the fires burned, they, they put off what they refer as ember casting, there was a new spot

fire. not a straight line to get from point a to point b., a challenge just to get the people evacuated. >> fire hit a transmission line. schools and the local high school without electricity tonight. officials say they are having to use their back up generators. >> reporter: about 30 structures were burned during this fire. taking a walk down 18th avenue it appears many of those were homes. and even more were vehicles, over here is one of those vehicles. they say, about 40-50 were destroyed. this one, absolutely desecrated. it has ash on it and the windows are blown out. another lake county community devastated by a fire. this time, it is clear lake. the fire spread 76 acres with

embers flying into communities destroying people's homes. >> it lands in the right spot you can lose everything in a matter of minutes. >> reporter: he was at home on sunday morning when he got an alert on his phone about the fire you >> don't really think much of it until we stepped outside and you saw how much smoke there was in the air. how dark it was, and the orange flames. >> reporter: with the winds he knew it was time to go. >> i gathered my most important documents, my family and we took off. >> reporter: in the evening he came back to find the best case scenario, his home was okay. >> just a little bit of fire-retardant which, i don't mind at all. you know. my house is still standing and four houses, five houses down the street are burnt down to ashes. >> one of those houses impacted belongs to this family. >> my house is down t. is burned. no more house. >> reporter: firefighters were still working on his lot making sure all of the fire is out.

but all that is left behind is rubble. the good news, he and his family are safe. he lived in the home for 25 years. he says it felt like a part of his family and he is struggling with the loss. >> how are you feeling now? >> wow, very bad. >> reporter: but for gutierrez he is feeling relieved and grateful he will be spending the night at home. >> my entire family is still with me and we are back at the place we call home. so. >> he feels safe knowing agencies with the assistance of cal fire are working to get the fire under control. >> everyone was working really hard. i could see it. >> gutierrez says he loves this community and would not consider leaving but he is going to look more closely at his insurance. he says he got lucky this time but wants to be prepared if anything like this happens in the future >> as we mentioned the weather has not helped. >> nope. >> darren peck is here with the latest on that. >> i want to give you more

merspective on perspective. we will watch a time lapse on the last six hours. as sunset arrived you can see that this fire was nowhere near as intense as it was in the afternoon. we will let it loop back to the beginning. this is after 2:00 watch this. as the afternoon wore on the plumes of smoke got smaller. and a lot of dark smoke? that in the early afternoon. indicative of the structures, the cars burns. as we got to sunset the colors changed that gives us a better clue of the intensity. one moment, just to take in the big picture here now. we are going to change our view, we are going to walk across the map of the u.s. and i want you to see what we look like today on the satellite. a large majority of that is smoke. there are huge complexes burning right now

throughout the pacific northwest, idaho in particular. and if we visualize the smoke that way, look how milky everything looks, awful air quality right now across much of the west. coming down to our virtual map. we areaible are able to visuallize it. unhealthy air, shades of yellow and orange. look at it. it is dealing with there, we are often so hyperfocused on the local stories but it is important to point out there is a large scale problem right now with fire season across the west. we are starting to see huge amounts of the western u.s. getting inundated with smoke. back with the forecast in just a bit. there is a significant cool down about to take place. i will see with you that in just a few minutes. we will get the latest on the

website. one of the worst in southern california. the line fire in san bernardino county burned 17,000 acres. forcing people out of the homes in the mountain communities of running springs on highway 18. governor newsom declared a state of emergency. battling the flame in triple digit conditions, the fire has created its own weather situation. there is no containment. firecrews in nevada are battling a fast-growing fire burning in davis creek regional park south of reno. 14,000 people have been forced to evacuate their homes. the fire has burned 12 buildings and that is as the governor declared a state of emergency. 6500 acres and again, no containment, we are following breaking news out of san jose tonight. shooting on center road just a few blocks from the park. the investigators say they were responding to a number of calls of somebody shooting a gun

outside of a business. officers got there they said the suspect was still armed, resulting in at least one officer opening fire. the suspect was then arrested and taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. also in san jose, first graders at trace elementary are rallying around their teacher after their home burn down. official his to red tag the family home after the fire. and then burglars came in and took what was left. so, students decided to pitch in, they opened a lemonade stand to raise moan. >> because we really love her and she is our first grade teacher and we want to raise a lot of money and someone gave us $100. >> the family started an online fundraising campaign but they are very touched by what the kids did to help them out. the clean foods movement is changing the way that food is

grown. and agriculture nonprofit in oakland is hoping to transform one neighborhood. this is a family's farmer market. part of an effort to change attitudes about food and people. >> reporter: she does not get a lot of new things, the town's name translates to leftovers. so, it seemed like the perfect place for a group called planting justice to create a new weekly farmer's market. >> it was an agriculture community for a long, long, long time. so, having this come back there is this sort of welcome familiar feel. >> reporter: the planning justices market manager says that is not all that is new here or rather will be. this property is the former site of the family nursery that closed

in 2017. >> it was slated to become another gas station and car wash which is the last thing the community needs. >> reporter: instead, planting justices is planting a good table that will include a new garden, nursery, and inside a cafe decorated with recycled wood from castle mount high's old bleacher seats, at the restaurant people will be asked to pay what you can. and that spirit extends to the farmer's market as well with vendors charged no fees to participate. and the experiments. >> it is customer based. anything they can not sell will be punched by planting justice for distribution in the mobile food truck or ingredients for food and baked goods prepared in this soon to be commercial kitchen. it is all part of the

humanitarian nonprofit headquartered at the sprawling nursery in east oakland. years ago they sponsored a gardening process in san quentin. >> folks were coming out and had nowhere to go. >> reporter: so far the nursery has created 165 living-waged jobs for people who were formally incarcerated. >> coming here and being with the plants, taking care of the plants, watching things grow makes you grow. if it is common it is nothing should be thrown away, not food, not wood, certainly not people and where better to do that than in a place where leftovers can be turned into something new. >> planting justice relies on grants and public donations. currently employs 50 people with living-wage jobs. and for more information about the organization there is a link on

fremont. then inland to the tri-valley, 100 degree, not cool what is taking so long to cool the numbers down? we got close to average here but have not done it over there yet. let's go to the big video monitor. i will show you a big display of what was going on in terms of our inability to get cooler temperatures, and, the marine layer which had been spilling over mount sutro just keund of really hung out there and look at it getting pushed down. this is just before sunset. you see what is going on? one of the really pretty fog falls, the fog is coming over, barely. at the foot of sutra tower and getting pushed down immediately on the other side. that is your sign there is high pressure in charge. taking the marine layer and pushing it back down. let's get back to the virtual map when weather that happens you are not able to get that cooler air inland. so, even if we visualize the wind streams today you can see that you have a little bit of onshore flow

here through the golden gate. come over here towards the east bay hills and look at what happens. it falls apart. now look at the try valley, nothing over there. so, the marine layer was so compressed today it could not get inland. that will change over the next few days, we will say good-bye to the wind and bring in the visualization for what the marine layer is going to do tomorrow. now, tomorrow, you will get help. and the temperatures are going to cool down inland by perhaps as much as 7 or 8 degrees. notice it still was not necessarily getting all of that far inland. on tuesday, this marine layer will be able to lift high enough. it will get all of the way inland. when that happens, day time highs coming down for those inland valleys, so, let's look attitude. i will put the day time highs on here across the bay in general. we will take in the wide view. we will see everybody's numbers on tuesday. you all look good. those look particularly good. lower 80s once we get there.

. panic, confusion and frustration as the police continue to search for the person they say opened fire on a busy freeway in kentucky an hour outside of lexington, kentucky. the calls have been flooding in but the rugged terrain is making the search for the gunman all the more difficult. [ sirens ] >> several people shot. >> reporter: the first call about an active shooter came late saturday. >> the victims have been shot through the windshield. >> reporter: first responders race to interstate 75 and laurel county, 9 counties north of the city of london. >> i can not stress how chaotic it was when our units arrived. cars on the side of the road, emergency flashers, windows shot out. five people shot, including a person struck in the face. two more injured in car wrecks, they are all

expected to be okay. >> do we have any idea where the shooter is at? >> reporter: at the scene they recovered an ar-15-style rifle, several magazines and a small suv registered to joseph couch, the police stopped traffic in both directions after terrified drivers told them it was not clear where bullets were coming from. >> you always think, oht will not happen to us. but it literally in the heart of our own city. it is heartbreaking. >> officials are not confident there was only one shooter. while they don't have a motive yet they don't think it was sparked by road rage. coming up next, ahead of the debate, taking a look at one of the biggest issues in this y

make housing affordable. trump is doing better for economy and inflation especially among noncollege educated and white voters. here in the bay area, the democratic party opened a new campaign headquarters today at 5th and market where nordstroms rack used to be. it will have room for more than 1,000 volunteers. voters in november will choose the next player of san francisco. no surprise, it is part of the campaign. we went out to the castro to see how people were feeling about the state of things >> for nearly 20 years, they patrolled the castro. part of one of oldest neighborhood watch groups in the city. in partnership with the police, they have not let up on their safety efforts in good times and bad. >> we are part of the overall solution but the fact that all of these different groups are approaching the same problem from different perspectives is a big part of why they are working so well. >> reporter: they say a slow night is a good night. that is

a more common occurrence. property crime across the city down more than 35% compared to last year. that is according to sfpd. and violent crime is down more than 13%. the lowest decrease in crime is seen in the mission where rates are down 10.7%. and the steepest decrease is in the richmond where crime is down nearly 45%. and while those numbers are promising they are not felt by all. just a few blocks a bay from the outskirts of the castro, he is reeling from the fourth break in, of the year. >> it is something you did not sign up for, right? we are passionate about food and lovemaking food and love bringing people to the tables. we did not sign up to be crime-fighters this is just out of our wheel house. >> reporter: sense of security shattered but sense of hope is not lost. >> we love the city. we want to
