the dolphins' tyreek hill responding to his run-in with police that ended with him face down on a road near the stadium. good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. those stories moment. first, the countdown to the presidential debate. less that two days until vice president kamala harris and former president donald trump face off for the first time. and the latest cbs news poll shows the two rung neck and neck. cbs' carissa lawson joins us now with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: neck and neck indeed. good morning. tomorrow night's debate is an opportunity for a do-over for both parties. in the first debate, president joe biden's performance forced him to drop out of the race. now with kamala harris in his place and locked in a tight race against donald trump, both sides are heading into the debate during these past few days very differently, with one side on the attack and the other seemingly trying to focus on policy. vice president kamala harris took a break from debate prep for a sunday stroll with second

gentleman doug emhoff. >> are you ready, madam vice president? >> ready. >> reporter: on saturday the vice president greeted shoppers at a spice store in pittsburgh. >> we're going to be fine. we are all in this together. >> yes, we are. >> reporter: over the weekend the harris-walz campaign unveiled its policy web page outlining proposals on key issues such as the economy, crime, and immigration. just in time for tuesday's high-stakes debate against former president donald trump. >> is anybody going to be watching? >> reporter: while campaigning in wisconsin saturday, the former president hurled insults at harris and president joe biden. >> we have the dumbest leaders in the history of our country, in the history of the world. >> reporter: on social media, trump also falsely claimed there was rampant cheating in the 2020 election and that there could be more in 2024, writing, quote, when i win, those people that cheated will be prosecuted which will include long-term prison sentences. it prompted this rebuke from second gentleman doug emhoff on sunday. >> it's unhinged. it's anti-american.

guess what -- we are not afraid. >> reporter: the latest cbs news battleground poll shows razor thin margins between the candidates in wisconsin as well as pennsylvania and michigan. the candidates are set to spend time in those and other key battleground states after tuesday's highly anticipated debate. tuesday night's 90-minute debate could be the only time trump and harris go head to head on the debate stage. the faceoff in philadelphia's national constitution center will not have a live audience, but it will have muted microphones, something trump's campaign wanted and harris' campaign did not. back to you, anne-marie. >> carissa lawson in new york. thank you so much. so we're going to have complete coverage of the president's debate tomorrow starting at 8:00 p.m. eastern right here on cbs followed by live simulcast of the debate and cbs' expert analysis. fire crews in california are battling more than a dozen wildfires across the state fueled by dangerous heat waves

and high winds. the worst is raging in san bernardino county. the line fire has more than quadrupled in size over the weekend prompting the evacuation of more than 11,000 people. cbs' elise preston is in the mountain town of running springs. >> reporter: crews struggled to slow the spread of the explosive line fire east of los angeles. it doubled in size overnight to more than 17,000 acres. the speed and intensity of the inferno forcing the entire communities of running springs and arrow bear lake to flee to safety. >> keep my critters safe and that's the important thing. >> reporter: firefighters are battling the flames in triple-digit conditions. governor gavin newsom declared a state of emergency saturday night to get more resources and money to help the fire-fight. this is a town behind us. >> it is, yes. a community, lot of ranch -- cabin homes. we're literally going to come out, do preparation on the

homes. >> reporter: more than 35,000 structures are in the wildfire's path, paired with the sweltering heat the fire has created its own weather system with clouds, thunder, and lightning. now many schools in the area are closed monday because this smoke is creating unhealthy air. elise preston, cbs news, san bernardino county, california. now to the massive manhunt in southeast texas for the suspect considered armed and dangerous who opened fire on a highway leaving five people seriously wounded and 12 vehicles riddled with bullet holes. police identified the suspect as 32-year-old joseph couch. they say he served at least four years in the national guard. investigators say they found couch's vehicle, an ar-15-style rifle they say he bought legally ate -- at a gun store saturday morning and rounds of ammunition. more from london, kentucky. we have several people shot --

>> reporter: the first calls about an active shooter came late saturday. >> having shot through the windshield. >> reporter: first responders raced to interstate 75 in laurel county, about nine miles north of the city of london. >> i can't stress how chaotic this was. when units arrived on the scene people -- cars on the side of the road, emergency flashers, windows shot out. >> reporter: five people were shot including one person who was struck in the face. two more were injured in subsequent car wrecks, but they're all expected to be okay. >> do we have any idea where this shooter's at? >> reporter: at the scene investigators recovered an ar-15-style rifle, several loaded magazines, and a small suv registered to 32-year-old joseph couch. police temporarily stopped traffic in both directions after terrifying drivers told them it wasn't clear where the bullets were coming from. [ sirens ] >> you always think it's not going to happen to us. it's in the heart of our own city. it's very heartbreaking. >> reporter: officials believe there was only one shooter and do not believe this to be a case

of road rage. the motive as of now remains unclear. cristian benevides, cbs news, london, kentucky. a rural georgia community is coming together after last week's tragic school shooting as we learn new details about the accused gunman. a candlelight vigil was held at the football field at the high school for the two students and two teachers killed in the shooting. another nine people were wounded. the grandfather of the 14-year-old suspect tells cbs news the boy's mother received a cryptic text from her son that morning saying "i'm sorry, mom," prompting her to call the school to warn them. the family also revealed the suspect's grandmother visited the school the day before the massacre to discuss his alleged behavioral issues. and now to the middle east crisis and the spreading violence there. three israeli civilians were shot and killed at a border crossing between the west bank and jordan. israeli forces killed the gunman in a shootout.

jordan called the incident an individual act and said the gunman was transporting goods to the west bank. the family of an american turkish woman who was killed while protesting in the west bank friday is demanding an independent investigation. the white house said that it was deeply disturbed by the killing and is calling on israel to investigate. the israeli military said that it's looking into reports that troops killed a foreign national while firing at a male instigator of violent activity. and the head of the cia along with his british counterpart said they are working ceaselessly for a cease-fire deal in gaza. bill burns said a new proposal would be presented in the next several days, adding both israel and hamas will have to make hard choices and difficult compromises. closer to home now, potential tropical cyclone six has formed over the warm waters of the southern gulf of mexico. with over two months left in the 2024 atlantic hurricane season. now the storm is currently about 300 miles south of the mouth of

"the new york times" reports a fugitive televangelist wanted by the fbi has been caught in the philippines. apollo quiboloy wanted in the united states for child sex trafficking was arrested on sunday in the philippines, two weeks after a massive police hunt. the justice department charged the self-proclaimed son of god in 2021 with sex trafficking girls and women between the ages of 12 and 24 and allegedly forcing them to have sex with him. he has denied any wrongdoing. the "associated press" said pope francis troubled to papua,
