aid philippe reines, even dressing like the president. >> if i destroy her in the debate, they'll say trump suffered a humiliating defeat tonight. >> reporter: he's been working with advisers. among them tulsi gabbert. tonight is a critical moment for both campaigns as they try to win over undecided moe scores. razor-thin margins separate the two in just a handful of battleground states according to the latest cbs news polls. here in pennsylvania, harris and trump are essentially in a statistical dead heat. >> i'm interested to hear what both individuals have to say. i haven't swayed who i'm going to vote for. >> i will not be endorsing donald trump this year. >> reporter: today the harris campaign is playing offense, releasing new ads ahead of the debate. both candidates will barn storm through key battleground states later this week.

rain over parts of the deep south where amounts could reach up to 10 inches in louisiana. and now to the wildfires threatening tens of thousands of homes and structures in san bernardino, california. the governor has declared a state of emergency. cbs's ben tracy reports from the line fire, which is the largest of 18 fires burning across the state. >> reporter: california wildfires are exploding during these final scorching days of summer. more than 1,700 firefighters are now battling an out-of-control blaze that's burning steep rugged terrain east of los angeles. 36,000 structures are threatened. joseph escobedo had to leave his home. >> we worked so hard to get this house, and just the thought of coming back to nothing, you know. >> reporter: the fire is creating its own unpredictable weather system, amid triple-digit heat.

>> it's really giving us a run for our money. >> reporter: brent pascua is with california fire. >> what's the biggest challenge? >> the biggest challenge is the unknown. we can't predict if it's going to head to the west or the east. >> reporter: another wildfire in northern california has burned at least 30 structures, forcing thousands to evacuate. stop a wildfire from jumping roads and containment lines deep within the angeles national forest, and a wildfire near reno, nevada, forced as many as 14,000 people and a herd of wild horses to flee the flames. climate change is making summers in the west hotter and drier, leading to longer and more active fire seasons. that's putting a strain on firefighting efforts. >> what is it like for firefighters to work in this kind of heat? >> it's tough for firefighters. they have to make sure they're getting rest cycles regularly so they don't have a heat emergency, heat exhaustion, heatstroke.
