>> good evening and welcome to this special post debate newscast on cbs news bay area. the crucial first debate between vice president kamala harris and former president trump just wrapped up and now we turn our attention to local issues and key races here in the bay area. we're going to spend some time drilling down on the tight race for san francisco mayor. tomorrow night at 6:00, 4 of the top candidates will face off in a debate right here on cbs news bay area. mayor london agreed to attend but now pulled out. we're at the ball room where the debate will be hosted. >> now the stage is literally set in this debate that is sponsored by cbs news bay area as well as the san francisco examiner and kcbs radio. it was to be a deep dive for san francisco voters, but without the mayor taking the stage, the other candidates now have a chance to break out of

the pack. as they put the final look at the stage and mayor breed is taking a pass. her campaign team announced last week the withdrawal and the other candidates may see the impact. >> what it means is they all have the challenge to mayor breed means they can talk about issues that are important to them and their candidacies, but also about her absence and how it speaks volumes. >> and we caught up with the mayor on camera who told us her departure for the debate comes to timing. >> i am the mayor of san francisco. not just the candidate. i have to run the city and that includes meetings and everything else i need to do. so i have to be very selective of the number of the base and the amount of time i'm able to be available for these kinds of opportunities. >> but that isn't expected to

stop other candidates from highlighting her absence. >> you know that you're going to be a target of derision by the folks that are there. you're trading that off for any missteps or mistakes you're worried about moving forward. when you're not on the stage, that can be costly in some ways. that's the trade off london breed and her team are making. >> this after a rare shooting in union square where 49er rookie ricky pier pierresol was shot and they say we can expect the candidates to make their own pitch for how they would respond to and prevent high profile crimes like this. >> we're going to see the active diverse in san francisco this particular cycle, but also going to see and the 49ers receiver who was shot and as a result moderates are really going to push forward here.

>> and mccuin said now is the time to make their pitch to voters in san francisco and even residents across the bay area. >> what happens in san francisco, what happens with london breed does resonate across the bay, around the bay and beyond. >> now in response to the mayor's statement, the luri and pharrell campaign said her absence come -- farrell said her absence comes down to polling. about when it comes to rank choice voting and closely followed by both luri and farrel. but in the second spot luri broke away to take the top of the second choice and that is significant because of the voting system where even the and he could third choice in this race could come out on top. >> lauren, thank you. as part of the series beyond the ballot, we wanted to bring you an in depth look at the mayoral candidates on a personal level and the issues motivating them to run for

office. city voters have consistently ranked crime and public safety as the number one concern heading into the election. but the data shows a big improvement so far in 2024 with police reporting a 13% drop in violent crime compare tod this time last year. and a 35% drop in property crimes. former interim mayor mark farrell made boosting the ranks of police an essential part of his campaign. so lauren now introduces us to the man attempting to return to city hall. >> ready for some football! >> it is not just election season for mayoral candidate farrell but also the start of football season. >> we're heading out to ignacious where our son jack is on the football team. regardless of the sport, the point is for us as parents is to be super engaged with with

our kids and this is a big way to do that. certainly if you have the ability and time to coach. >> this is a drive mark and his wife liz made hundreds of times from their home to st. ignacious where not only his kids go to school, but he went to high school. >> i'm a dad first. period. and you ask me what's the most important thing i do in life, what's the thing i enjoy doing the most in life? it's being a dad. >> stepping back onto his old stomping grounds, he's reminded of his time playing football on the field his son jack plays on today. >> playing on the field i played on the and going into some of the same classrooms. absolutely. honestly it's just a source of pride in our kids. that they're doing their own things. they're much better athletes than i ever was. without a doubt. probably got it from their mom. >> sports and parenting go hand in hand in the farrell house, coaching his kids both on and off the field. for mark, those lessons can be

seen in his goal as candidate for mayor. >> if we're going to bring our city back and fix all the things that are are problems now, we have to be honest about where we sit to have a sustained path forward and leadership is a big part of that and taking that from the athletic field to city hall is a very natural extension. >> it's an extension he's made before as interim mayor in 2017 and after 8 years of watching from the sidelines, he's hoping to get back into the political field, but for mark he said it's his family that brought him this far. >> that the family is such a big part of our lives and big part of my life and like i said, nobody's perfect. our children aren't. i'm not. but with really proud of who they are as human beings more than anything else and, again, if that's the one thing i do in life, to be a great parent to our kids, that's life well lived. >> using that motivation to get

across the finish line this fall. >> another issue impacting every single resident of san francisco in one way or another. the sky high cost of housing. so there's a new push to expand rent control in the city. mayoral candidate and board of supporters president erin peskin announced a plan tied to the passage of prop 33 in november. that would repeal the law that limited rent control to buildings constructed before 1979. if prop 33 passes, peskin's ordinance would automatically expand rent control to an additional 100,000 apartments in the city. >> renters need relief. protection from price gouging. and that everyone deserves stable housing. too many people are forced on the streets because of rent increases. >> the measure is opposed by landlords who are concerned it could discourage future development in the city. but peskins said it would not apply to buildings constructed

after november 5th. this is peskin's second time serving on the board of supervisors and neighbors in north beach know him well and he told our lauren toms his own personal struggles with addiction make him the right person to lead the city's recovery. >> all you have to do is come in here and around this aquatic park and put your head in the right space to be everything you can be all day long. never gets old. >> at least 3 times a week, supervisor and mayoral candidate peskin can be found here at the south end rowing club taking a dip before heading off to city hall. >> only the bold swim in the cold. >> it's a practice that for aaron became more than a routine. more than an exercise. but a part of his being. >> it is just a profound connection with the environment that, i mean, we have parks and we've got gold know gate park but also have this incredible

bay which is for most people a post card. but you can actually interact with that post card. >> his 3 decades of swimming is one of few traits that transcend's his time in city hall. >> i'll try anything once and hang a left and down to that flag. swim back and depending on the tides, that's about a 20 minute swim and then i'm just in the right zone all day long. >> each time he streps in the water he finds a source of healing and recovery from his time with alcohol. >> it is a moment you can separate yourself. i think some people do immediatication and some of us swim in the bay and it is really important in my own personal journey of recovery. >> swimming across the bay to alcatraz and back it's a

. >> and welcome back to the in depth look of the san francisco mayoral race as 4 of the top contenders prepare for the debate. it's no secret the downtown area has been struggling since the pandemic and the city has been making a concerted push to give people the reason to come back. that includes the creation of a new entertainment zone on front street where businesses can sell alcohol to go during special events. so mayor london proposed adding 4 more zones and thrive city and midmarket and maiden lane

near union square and between union square and china town. the board of supervisors still has to approve the proposal. the city is also providing grants to help struggling entertainment and night life venues survive. the civic center's sfraunt and jazz bar, mr. tipples, was one of 14 venues chosen to receive entertainment and revitalization grants of up it $50,000 each. the owner told us the influx in cash helped them recover from a rough pandemic. >> it was completely horrible. shut down with with neggoing on and us pulling out our hair. and it's nice to be back. >> so these are just a couple of the initiatives mayor london broed is touting as she tries to convince voters she deserves another turn. lauren spent time with her at her home. >> i remember the day i took this picture and crying because i didn't want to wear this shirt. i wore it almost every day.

it was like i want to wear a different shirt! even at 5, i was a piece of work. but i didn't understand we didn't have it to go buy new shirts for picture day. you're going to wear what you have right here. >> inside london breed's apartment, she's surrounded by photos showing generations of family both by blood, and as she says, by love. >> like am i even in there? i don't think i'm in there but that's the breeds. >> she was raised by her mother camillia whose impact can be felt in each part of the mayor's home. >> that's me and my grandmother. i blew that picture up a little bit. we didn't have a lot of pictures. that's her when she finished high school. >> but to a young london, depending on food stamps while in poverty, she couldn't imagine the shoes she'd later step into. >> i know what it feels like for people in positions like this to make decisions that

negatively impact my community and i never want to be one of those people. >> and to prepare to make those decisions with the hope of a positive impact. each morning she tries to dedicate a moment to herself. >> i make coffee. to have coffee to get me through the day. >> delicious! >> and that tough love that my grandmother, it was like you cannot live here unless you do your homework and make up your bed and clean up. there were rules and i believe in rules. i believe in rules and i believe in structure and that that allows for everyone to have an opportunity to be a part of a better community. a better society. >> but her role as mayor brought some healing to london who recalls her own experience living among conditions she worked to improve during her 6 years in office. >> feeling hurt and angry about everything all the time, it was just most of my life because we had no choice.

it is definitely a blessing to be able to go through that and to use those same experiences. >> about a dozen plants fill her apartment windows. >> i became a plant mom during the pandemic. i love my plants. they're my babies. >> a mark of growth in the city she hopes to improve for others who follow in her path. >> whoever wins in november will have to deal with the issue every mayor in the bay area faces. the persistent cries of homelessness. the mayor is launching the crack down on homeless encampments in the wake of the supreme court ruling relaxing restrictions on the sweeps. the city's latest point in time count last month found 13% fewer people are living on the streets or in tents, but overall homelessness is up about 7 %and that's due to many more people living in shelters and in vehicles. and we've seen a prime example

of that on the city's west side in recent months. families living in rv's have been moved from place to place. the mayor's office said those people are offered assistance but many families say the help isn't enough. mayoral candidate daniel laurie spent years focused on this issue of homelessness and poverty as the head of a non-profit. he's also the only city hall outsider are in the ranks. we joined him with a date on his wife. >> thank you. you have to be all in if you're going to do something as wild and crazy as run for mayor of your hometown. >> dashing across that hometown, racing to make it to a rare date night with his wife, becca, but with with each passing block he's reminded why he's taken on this challenge. >> i love when people say you can't do something and i think that's what we're seeing in san francisco. we have a culture now where

people oh, san francisco's done. this city's got the same drive that i do. >> under 100 days out from election day, the reality of his run for mayor still hasn't set in for the man known for the non-profit tipping point and relation to the levis company. even so he says his identity lies with the spirit of san francisco. >> i think people have always under estimated me. i think people think everything just was handed to him. listen, i've had a lot offered and i'll never deny that. i work hard. >> stepping off the 9 and onto market street. >> i used to wear crazy colored socks and trying to tone it down a little bit but you have to have a little something down there. >> he walks into an event close to his heart. downtown first thursdays in soma created by the civic joy fund. a group founded in part by daniel himself with the vision

. >> >> a step forward in san francisco's effort to build more affordable housing. today supervisors approved an ordinance that will cut the city's transfer tax on new developments in half. it would only apply to those built with with union labor and that have at least 12% of units designated as affordable. the bill is expected to create thousands of union construction jobs. so that ordinance offered by the supervisor who is hoping to become the city's next mayor. our lauren toms tagged along with him as he performed some of his dad duties. >> just a few steps for the mayoral candidate to go from city official back to dad. >> when they say running for office, like literally mean running for office. you're in this constant, constant hustle. and that's why i always say if you're not losing weight on the

recovered guns and cash. police in san paolo arrested 3 men accused of selling catalytic converters and copper wire. this shows they seized from two homes today. one in san pablo and another in richmond recovering 700 catalytic converters and more than 1100 pounds of wire. so president joe biden is in new york tonight as the nation prepares to mark 23 years since the 9/11 terror attack. tomorrow he'll be joined by vice president kamala harris to visit the 9/11 memorial at ground zero and attend a flight 93 remembrance in shanksville, pennsylvania and another at the pend gon. now to the race for the white house and the high stakes show down between vice president kamala harris and former president trump. the two wrapped up their first and possibly only debate about an hour ago in philadelphia. they tackled an issue top of

mind for voters. the economy and inflation. >> we know that we have a shortage of homes and housing and the cost of housing is too expensive for far too many people. we know that young families need support to raise their children and i intend on extending a tax cut for those families of $6,000 th largest child tax credit that we have given in a long time so that those young families can afford to buy a crib, buy a car seat, buy clothes for their children. >> i had no inflation, virtually no inflation. they had the highest inflation perhaps in the history of the country because i've never seen a worst period of time. people can't go out and buy cereal or bacon or eggs or anything else. the people of our country -- >> the two also sparred on crime and immigration with trump attacking the biden policy's administration and harris bringing up her rival's own criminal cases. >> it is much higher because of

them. they allowed criminals, many many millions of criminals. they allowed terrorists and common street criminals. they allowed people to come in. drug dealers to come into our country and now in the united states -- >> i think this is so rich coming from someone who has been prosecuted for national security crimes, economic crimes, election interference. has been found liable for sexual assault and his next big court appearance is in november at his own criminal sentencing. >> so with the debate now in the books, we look ahead to the election day 56 days from now. here now joining us in the virtual studio, professor david mccuin from the university. thanks for joining us on quite the day. do you think this is the only debate we're looking at? >> yes, i do. should there be another debate? yes. will there be?

probably not. >> loaded question. what are some of your big take aways and then we'll go to other issues. >> kamala harris had a lot at stake and she had to do better and look presidential. did she do enough? probably on the margins and that means donald trump took the bait repeatedly. maybe autoa draw in the first 2 minute and his closing statement was fine. it was strong. but everything he did in between, he kept going to her. he kept going back and forth to her in terms of taking the bait and when he was taking the bait that was playing to her and into some of her campaign messages and that's a problem. >> let's go to the big topic also. the falsehood trump kept going back to and that migrants from haiti are eating people's pets including in springfield, ohio. take a listen. >> i hear you bring up springfield ohio and abc news did reach out to the city manager and said there were no

credible reports of pets harmed, abused or hurt by individuals in the community. >> i've seen people on television. the people on television say my dog was taken and used for food. >> all right. so you heard that exchange there and the rhetoric going on. the dialogue. and it's spreading all over. is this going to be one of his campaign lines of attack heading into november? >> look, if you're going to talk about falsehoods, you're going to do this. it went to the predicament that trump has, he has to convert some voters. he's not when talking about. if you're just tuning in to this moment of the debate. you're like pets are being eaten in springfield, ohio? what is going on? what is this? and that doesn't help with the swing voters. there are elements here he appears out of touch. that helps kamala harris. it's not that she beats him or does better than expected and we see this in about 48 hours in terms of polling data and it is a point and maybe a point and a half for her. not much but in a huge race important.

>> there was a take away and former president trump tried to keep the focus on president biden. there was a moment she said you're not running against president biden. you're running against me. how do you think she did in separating herself as the new candidate. >> donald trump prosecutes the case against her in the closing statement saying you've been there for 3 and a half years. what have you done? what have you done? that's what he's strongest and should have returned to the whole time to allow or force her to say what she would do differently and solve those problems. in those parts she didn't return specifics because she didn't have to. donald trump needed that. she didn't do that. but it's really what happens after the debate that's most consequenciat. >> a bit of break -- consequential. >> and a bit of breaking news. taylor swift endorsing harris saying she fights for the rights and causes i believe. need a warrior to champion them.

she also referred to herself as a childless cat lady. so what kind of impact do you think that has. and i might add since she did that tweet, she has more than 2 million fans doing the like so far. the swifties. >> and she posted it on the instafeed with a cat as well. look, you cannot under estimate the power of at a taylor swift in the 18-24 demographic. we saw this at the convention. you have the swifties and start of nfl season. the beehive in beyonce. you have the 18-34 demographic. that is a huge demographic though there might be policy differences that are related to say gaza for example. that flies by the way side because taylor swift showed she'll be a difference maker and timed it politically in a perfect way. i have tines at home and go and have a conversation. does that change things for you? >> if not them their friends and those preregistered and then a call and a movement to push out.

vehicles destroyed. meanwhile the battle against the davis fire is indensifying as strong winds wiped through the area and they're dropping water over the flames and dealing with critical conditions and 14 homes were destroyed and the fire started in the davis creek regional park and spread to 5600 acres with no containment and a trio of destructive wildfires burning out of control forcing thousands of families to clear out. dania backus is following the latest for us. >> the airport fire in southern california's orange county erupted monday afternoon and quickly scorched hundreds of acres coming dangerously home to homes and businesses. >> it is growing quite quickly and we have more than a thousand fire fighters assigned. >> many are evacuated or

preparing to flee the flames. >> it scary but should be all right. i think it will burn out. >> fire crews are scrambling. the airport fire is burning in 3 different directions. about 65 miles east of los angeles, the national guard stepped in to help crews battle the line fire which is threatening the resort community of big bear. more than 65,000 structures are threatened and thousands are ordered to leave. >> hopefully burn up the ridge and our little community will be free from flames that are nearby. >> across the region, bone dry vegetation and triple digit temperatures are affecting efforts. >> the biggest challenge is the unknown. we can't predict if it will head to the west or the east. >> crews are battling flames under a red flag warning. >> we've seen multiple fires start here in the last couple of days and crews are working extra hours if you will. they're working diligently to continue efforts. >> they say the heat wave is

expected to break in the next 24 hours ushering in cooler temperatures and the chance for fire fighters to get the upper hand. >> boy, dry conditions and a a lot of wind and joining me now we're cooling off a bit but still dangerous fire conditions to worry about. >> unfortunately. it is peak fire season and we'll continue to keep our eyes on it and closely on the boils fire because that's the closest one to the bay area but we have good fuse. not only are we dealing with cooler temperatures today but the coverage and the humidity as well. it is up to around 32% humidity. temperatures nice and cool. upper 70s and it is a bit breezy out there. we're expecting those breezier winds to persist over the next 24 to 36 hours. as a storm system that brought us this big cool down, it will continue to impact us. we'll continue to see the

clouds building in all across the bay area overnight tonight and into early tomorrow morning, but we are expecting there to be a push of dryer air and allowing for more sunshine tomorrow afternoon. this is the loop over the next 24 hours showing you, yes, it is going to be cloudy and foggy overnight tonight but it is not staying cloudy and a couple of degrees warmer than today as winds pick up testimony as well. it means you'll have to secure any loose outdoor objects or they'll be picked up and blown away with gusts upward of 25-35 mph. again, we'll continue to see these breezy to windy conditions making their way over the bay area. so that is something we'll continue to keep our eyes on. the windier conditions stick around as well as with gusts 20-35 mph. especially closer to our coastal communities. you see these colors we have in these darker reds and oranges? those are those gustiest winds

taxi way. can you tell us what it was? >> when the wing tip clipped the tail of the regional jet sitting on the taxi way. >> the impact almost took the smaller plane's tail completely off. >> when it happened we freaked out thinking we ran off the runway and suddenly there was a bigger plane took our tail out and it was bad, man. it was bad! we were scared. >> some passengers on the bigger plane like steven shelton said they barely felt the collision. >> the whole plane vibrated. you know how you hit a deep pot hole and the whole vehicle bounces? it was basically that. >> there were no reports of deaths or injuries. shortly after the mishap, the smaller plane's 56 passengers who were headed to louisiana were evacuated from the plane. according to the faa, the number of serious runway incidents in the first 6 months of 2024 have decreased 62% from the same time last year.

>> a brave dog from placer county is credited with saving her owner's life. it was during a terrifying house fire in roseville. maya refused to leave her disabled owner's side. fire fighters rushed in and rescued them both just in time. in an emotional reunion, the owner thanked the rescuers saying if they had been even a little later, they would have lost maya. >> she probably wouldn't have made it and they found the dog passed out on top of my wife. she took a lot of the burns away. my wife didn't get burned on the chest or anything like that because the dog was laying on top of her and probably saved her life. >> hire's the moment a fire fighter -- here's the moment a fire fighter rescued her from the home moments after saving the owner. the team reacted fast giving maya ox gen which saved her life. on -- oxygen which saved her life. in honor of her bravery, the
