snapping power lines, and knocking down trees. the first indication was it was an explosion in my ears. >> breaking her silence. the alaska airlines pilot at the helm when that door panel blew out is speaking for the first time in a cbs news exclusive. and the rock star to the rescue. how jon bon jovi helped save a woman in need. good morning. i'm shanelle kaul in for anne-marie green. francine has lost some of its punch since moving ashore and has weakened back to a tropical storm. it is still walloping southern louisiana and parts of mississippi. the damage here extensive. roofs ripped off, trees down, and some streets impassable. power is out to hundreds of thousands of people. the storm crashed ashore in terrebonne parish, impacting communities along the gulf coast including new orleans, a city

that sits below sea level. that's where we find cbs' jason allen is with more on the story. >> reporter: a turbulent view from a shrimp boat as francine slammed into louisiana as a category-two storm yesterday packing a deadly storm surge and winds whipping at nearly 100 miles per hour. in hard-hit terrebonne parish, the powerful storm brought down power lines, snapped trees, and tore through this thrift store. >> at least nobody got hurt. my family's intact. that's all i care about, you know. this is the worst happens to me, i'm good. >> reporter: power outages left more than 350,000 louisiana residents in the dark as they hunkered down from francine overnight. partial 911 outages were reported in areas impacted by the storm, though wireless companies say they're resolving the issue. >> when it's daylight we'll see what's going on and what needs to be repaired and get working on it. >> reporter: with streets in parts of new orleans now flooded, the mayor says the city is prepared. >> we're just continuing to be -- i would say that model for

disaster preparedness and really for recovery. >> reporter: winds and storm surge from a now-weakened francine are expected to pound mississippi and alabama the next few hours with the potential of deadly tornadoes and flash flooding. jason allen, new orleans. now what's left of francine is moving north. while its winds will go below tropical storm strength later today, there is still a risk of flash floods and isolated tornadoes from tennessee to the florida panhandle. three to six inches of rainfall are still yet to come. heaviest over parts of tennessee, alabama, and mississippi. firefighters in southern california have been busy battling three big wildfires. the airport fire has now burned through more than 23,000 acres in orange and riverside counties. at least nine people have been injured, and hundreds are under evacuation orders. the bridge fire east of los

angeles also continues to grow. it spread to more than 50,000 acres and was 0% contained yesterday. it's now the largest active fire in the state of california. and authorities have arrested and charged 34-year-old justin halstenberg for allegedly starting the line fire that now ravaged more than 36,000 acres. to the presidential race now. vice president kamala harris and former president donald trump return to the campaign trail today one day after pausing to mark the september 11th attacks. harris stumps in north carolina while trump heads to arizona with 54 days now until election day. cbs' jarred hill with more. good morning. >> reporter: it is fast approaching. both harris and trump are trying to capitalize on what they see as winning moments from tuesday's highly watched debate as they head back out on the road. a big question is will we see them face to face again.

system. >> reporter: now with the conventions and first debate behind them, harris and trump are back on the road. the former president in tucson, arizona, today. harris with back-to-back rallies in north carolina. some voters in pennsylvania are hoping to hear more substance from both parties before november. >> i didn't really find anything substantial in all of that. it was just a lot of back and forth. >> reporter: with 54 days until election day, both candidates are looking to squeeze every moment to get their message out. let's talk about taylor swift's endorsement because there are real-world impacts to this. we are told that more than 330,000 visits happened at vote.gov yesterday funneled specifically through the custom link taylor shared on her instagram. we don't know if this has impacted actual registration yet, but still a sign of her immense influence. back to you. >> okay. good to know. jarred hill in new york. thank you.

in miami, dolphins star tyreek hill expressed regret for not immediately following police orders after sunday's traffic stop that landed him in cuffs. the nfl star at one point refused to roll down his window after he was pulled over. at a news conference hill called on the miami-dade police department to fire 27-year-old veteran -- 27-year veteran, that is, danny torres, who yanked him from his car and kneeled on his back. >> i will say i could have been better. you know, i could let down my window. it's crazy to know that, you know, you have officers in this world that would literally do that with body cams on. >> he's been placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation. one of the hero pilots aboard that alaska airlines plane that had a door blow out in mid flight is speaking out

for the first time about those terrifying moments. cbs' kris van cleave has this exclusive interview. alaska -- emergency. >> reporter: alaska airlines pilot emily wiprud sounded the alarm. something had gone terribly wrong. >> the first indication was it was an explosion in my ears. and then a whoosh of air. my body was forced forward. and there was a loud bang. >> reporter: did you know at this point there was a hole in the airplane? >> no. i didn't know that there was a hole in the airplane until we landed. >> we just need to depressurize. we need to return back to portland. >> it was incredibly loud. i remember putting the oxygen mask on and trying to transmit to atc and wondering why can't i hear anything. >> reporter: a door panel on the boeing 737 max had blown out with enough force to rip off her headset.

she said their training took over as the two pilots worked to safely land. >> i opened the flight deck door. and i saw calm, quiet, hundreds of eyes staring right back at me. and i looked at my flight attendants, and i said, "are you okay?" and in that response i heard, "hole, four, five empty seats and injuries." >> and are you thinking when they said empty seats, that you'd lost people? >> yes. and i remember it not taking very long for us to confirm we had 177 souls on board. >> reporter: that had to be an emotional roller coaster. >> yeah. i was so thankful. i was in shock. i -- disbelief. everybody was there.

"the boston globe" reports harvard university has enrolled fewer black freshmen after the ban on affirmative action. harvard says black students make up of 14% of new students this fall, down from 18% last year. it comes after the college lost a critical supreme court case in june, 2023, resulting in a nationwide ban on race-conscious affirmative action in college admissions. several other top schools have reported similar results. "reuters" says boeing faces a possible strike tomorrow as workers threaten to reject a tentative labor pact. 30,000 workers in portland, oregon, and seattle are expected to vote today on their first full contract in 16 years. some workers are upset the deal does not include bigger raises and other improvements. in order for a strike to happen two-thirds of workers must support a work stoppage.

crews raced to save this humpback whale found wrapped in multiple fishing lines and floats in british columbia, canada. the whale was wrapped so tight it could not even open its mouth. it took crews several days, but they were finally able to untangle the whale, and it swam away free. in cbs "moneywatch" this morning, stocks ticked up on wednesday as investors assessed how the latest inflation data could impact federal reserve policy. the dow gained 124 points. the nasdaq was up 369, and the s&p 500 ticked up 58 points. the latest federal data shows consumer prices rose just 2.5% in august compared to last year. it's also down from 2.9% in july and marks a three-year low. soaring housing costs made up for most of that august increase, while energy prices have cooled further since the month before.
