delivering another blow to the troubled aircraft maker. after the storm communities across the gulf coast are drying out and cleaning up after francine tore a path of destruction. and the debate over debates. kamala harris says they owe it to the voters, but donald trump says no, thanks, as both candidates launch battleground campaign blitzes. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with breaking news overnight. the latest blow to aircraft giant boeing as machinists walk off the job. [ chants ] 33,000 workers voted to strike after rejecting a proposed contract that would have raised their pay by 25% over the next four years. workers say they have not had a raise in 16 years. the strike is expected to halt production of boeing's 737 max and 777 jet in washington state. now to the presidential race.

with just 53 days until election day, vice president kamala harris and former president donald trump are on opposite sides of the country today trying to win over undecided voters in battleground states. the two candidates don't agree on much, and their latest dispute -- whether or not to have another debate. cbs' jarred hill is joining us with the latest on that. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. you know, they might have to agree to disagree on the idea of a followup debate. in a matter of days, the former president has gone from being lukewarm to a seemingly firm no. in battleground north carolina thursday, vice president kamala harris pushed for another head to head with former president donald trump. >> we owe it to the voters to have another debate. [ cheers ] this election and what is at stake could not be more important. >> reporter: on stage in arizona, the former president told supporters he's done. >> so because we've done two debates and because they were successful, there will be no third debate.

>> reporter: a third counting his first with president biden. on social media, the former president declared harris the loser in tuesday's match-up. but even some people attending his rally expressed reservations. >> trump could have done a better job. she got underneath his skin. >> reporter: speaking in tucson, trump also unveiled a new proposal to end tax on overtime pay with no details on how he'd finance it. he repeated a false claim about haitian immigrants in springfield, ohio. >> they're taking the geese, you know where the geese are -- in the park, in the lake. and even walking off with their pets. >> reporter: trump even sharing these a.i. images on social media. meanwhile, springfield's city hall was evacuated thursday after a bomb threat that was sent to multiple agencies and even schools. the city's mayor told a local newspaper haitian migrants were mentioned in the complaint. that's something that could come up during trump's press conference in california later today.

he then heads to las vegas for a rally while vice president harris is slated to campaign in pennsylvania. 53 days until the election, but early and absentee voting starts weeks earlier in some states. >> all right, jarred hill in new york. thank you. a judge in georgia has dropped three criminal charges linked to donald trump's election interference case. the judge dismissed two criminal counts against trump and another count related to his allies. in august of 2023, trump and 18 others were indicted on charges to overturn the 2020 presidential election. the case has been stalled for months as an effort to disqualify the top prosecutor remains on appeal. and turning now to the cleanup from hurricane francine. power is slowly starting to in -- to come back on, but about 132,000 customers in louisiana remain in the dark attorney. -- this morning. just look at this drone video from a flooded mandeville. water from lake pontchartrain overflowing into the city's streets there.

cbs' dave malkoff spoke to one couple grappling with the damage after facing the sheer force of the storm. >> reporter: torrential rain and wind gusts of nearly 100 miles per hour made the streets of dulac, louisiana, look like high seas on wednesday. just north in thibodaux, seven inches of rain in 24 hours turned into blinding downpours. >> can you roll over -- >> reporter: during the raging storm, there is the moment when deputies in donaldsonville rescued a woman pinned under a tree. they had to use chainsaws and jacks to lift her to safety. new orleans was inundated with three times the amount of rain in a typical month. now crews are working to restore electricity, and the cleanup has begun. >> do this. >> all right. >> reporter: and the misery is shared. dan the junk man and his wife samantha stevens lost their passion project of a threat where -- a thrift stores selling

in the heart of terrebonne parish. this means something to the neighborhood. it's the most affordable place to shop. now the roof is gone, and everything's exposed to the elements. >> really good people in this neighborhood, and a lot of them are less fortunate. and they look forward to coming here. their favorite place. >> reporter: dan stevens is feeling grateful. >> i've been blessed my whole life. if this is the only bad thing that happens, i'm good, man. doesn't bother me. really doesn't. >> reporter: what he doesn't want is people coming inside in the overnight hours. as we go to the drone, you can see what they're building right now. a temporary wall here. beyond that, there are steel beams that have been ripped apart by the force of the hurricane itself, razor sharp, right at head level. the national hurricane center says most of the injuries actually happen after a hurricane has passed. dave malkoff, cbs news, houma, louisiana. cooler temperatures in the coming days could help thousands of firefighters get control of three massive wildfires burning

in southern california. they've torched more than 110,000 acres combined and destroyed dozens of homes. ben tracy -- cbs' ben tracy spoke to a homeowner who did everything he could to fight the flames himself. it came up this side here, and then just caught the thing on fire. i'm telling you, it was hot, hot, hot. >> reporter: when the flames arrived at robert lucas' door in lake elsinore tuesday he said it felt like a war zone. >> it's pitch black, and fire's coming over the top of me. i can't see. it's hot, and -- and i don't know where i'm going. >> reporter: as the airport fire exploded to more than 20,000 acres, lucas fought off the flames with a hose for more than 12 hours. you bought a water truck thinking someday you're going to need -- >> not someday. it's going to happen. there's no question. it's not a house. it's my home. i built it my own self. so that's why i stayed, to try to save it. >> reporter: three major fires are still burning within 100 miles of los angeles.

the largest is the bridge fire which has charred more than 51,000 acres. officials investigating the so-called line fire charged justin halstenberg with nine counts including aggravated arson. they say evidence was found inside the 34-year-old's home and truck, and that he allegedly started two other fires the same day. >> arson is one of those crimes that is to me unbelievably despicable because it's a head scratcher. >> reporter: despite having survived three fires, robert lucas has no second thoughts. does it give you any pause about living here? >> oh, absolutely not. this is a great place to live. i'm at the age that i don't want to rebuild this. i want to save it. >> reporter: firefighters are finally getting the weather they need to get the upper hand on those blazes including lower temperatures and less wind. it could be several days before people are let back in to see what they've lost. ben tracy, cbs news, lake elsinore, california. we are possibly getting a rare glimpse into north korea's

closely guarded nuclear weapons program. the korean central news agency releasing photos showing leader kim jong-un touring what state media says is a uranium enrichment facility. this as he is calling for stronger efforts to, quote, exponentially increase the number of his nuclear weapons. a new federal review is out detailing how nearly 200 border patrol agents handled the school shooting in uvalde, texas, in may of 2022. the report released thursday said none of the agents found a map or key to robb elementary to gain access to the critical areas of the building. the document also faulted officials for not providing gunshot wound victims with immediate medical treatment. 19 students and two teachers were killed by the 18-year-old gunman. coming up, dramatic rescue. police officers pull two kids from a burning home. and later, a near collision on a runway. how one plane ended up with blown-out tires. ended up with

officers rushed to save two boys trapped in a burning home. the frightening scene unfolded early tuesday in vider, texas. the mother said her 7 and 9-year-old sons were inside. one of the officers pulled out an air conditioning unit to help the boys get out the window. they were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation and are expected to be okay. a death row inmate loses a bid for freedom, and a victory for abortion rights in north dakota. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the washington post" reports a judge has overturned north dakota's near-total abortion ban. the judge said the state constitution protects women's rights to an abortion before the fetus is viable, adding the current law violates the state constitution because it's too vague. the ruling came as part of a lawsuit filed by doctors that asked the court to strike down the ban in its entirety.

abortion will soon become legal in the state for the first time in more than a year. the state's attorney general plans to appeal. "the kansas city star" says a missouri judge upheld marcellus williams' conviction and death sentence despite a lack of dna evidence. williams was sentenced to death in the 1998 murder of felicia gayle. he had always maintained his innocence and no forensic evidence like dna, hair, or fingerprints linked him to the crime. yesterday a judge ruled there is no basis for a court to find williams innocent. he's set to be executed by lethal injection later on this month, and his lawyers are expected to request clemency from the governor. and "the new york times" reports harvey weinstein is facing a new sealed indictment in new york. the new york grand jury indicted the disgraced movie mogul on thursday as the manhattan district attorney's office prepares to retry weinstein after a reversal of his rape conviction in april. weinstein, who is recuperating after emergency heart surgery, did not appear in court.

the wooden pier in santa monica saying they felt that jolt. a heart-pounding scene unfolded at nashville international airport thursday morning. an alaska airlines pilot had to slam on the brakes at nearly 120 miles per hour and abort a takeoff to avoid a potential crash with a southwest airlines jet. >> southwest 1045 set for departure. cancel takeoff clearance. >> the tires on the alaska airlines jet blew out. fortunately no one was hurt. the faa says the southwest plane had been cleared to cross the same runway that alaska airlines says it had clearance for, as well, from air traffic control. of course an investigation is now under way. and springfield, ohio, native john r. stevens who you may know as superstar john legend took to social media to respond to donald trump promoting the false allegation that haitian immigrants
