2:08 am
>> those are shots. those are gunshots. oh guys. >> yeah, that's what they heard and why they're running. the man posted that video of what happened right before and during that shooting. our da lin talked to people who saw the whole thing and has some exclusive surveillance video. >> reporter: it started with san francisco police officers trying to detain this man. it ended with gunfire at a bart station. tourists running for safety. >> oh my god. >> reporter: police say it started just before 10:30
2:09 am
friday morning. officers assisting with the homeless encampment with this man, out in public view. it's unclear if he was sleeping. this witness says officers tried to get him to come out of the car to surrender. >> 15 different officers started approaching the man, telling him to stop. he decided to run. >> drop the gun! >> reporter: surveillance cameras from latte express show the man ignoring the cop, walking towards fifth street near market street. police officers followed the gunman with shields and their guns drawn. >> i yelled for everybody to get down. there is a guy coming this way with a pistol. get on the ground now and stay on the ground. >> reporter: michael keller was playing the lotto inside the latte express and snapped this photo of the gunman. the suspect's right hand was on the gun the whole time. >> he came into the doorway and i said get out, dude. he didn't come in. and then he went into the liquor store. >> reporter: that's michael in the white hat on the floor.
2:10 am
>> he could have shot me. >> reporter: instead the gunman held up inside the liquor store next door. frisco live shot the video. officerskept demanding the man to drop his weapon, but the man kept ignoring them and walked away. this all played out in front of dozens of passer-byes, shoppers, and tourists. this has taken place in front of the former westfield shopping store near the corner of fifth and market streets. officers followed the gunman to the powell street bart plaza station underground. shortly after that, investigators say two officers fired at the gunman. >> oh my gosh, guys. >> reporter: tourists are waiting to arrive with cable cars and ran to safety. >> our officers are deployed to prevent crime. when we see somebody armed with a gun, you know, we want to get that
2:11 am
person in custody before they hurt somebody. >> reporter: the police chief says officers recovered the gun. paramedics rushed the suspect to the hospital where he was less than fair condition. it was a big scare for the witnesses. >> i was in shock. i was definitely in shock. >> reporter: witnesses say they heard one shot go off first. then the gunfire from the officers. investigators say they're looking to see if the suspect opened fire on the officer or why the officer shot them down in the plaza. michael says he is glad he and other bystanders are safe. >> may be lucky and alive, but not lucky with the lotto. nervous relief that none of us were hurt or injured or worse. >> the plus chief says he is going to follow standard practice and protocol and release more information at a town hall. that will happen some time in the next ten days. today, former president trump was back in the bay area to try to raise some campaign cash. he attended a fundraiser at this woodside estate, where
2:12 am
tickets went for as high as half a million dollars. it was hosted by a billionaire tech guru. dozens lined the streets to catch his motorcade. one of them brought a tribute to trump in a form of a maga inner tube. others stuck with flags and banners. >> i grew up in palo alto. i'm a proud republican. i think there's a lot of us, and i encourage all of them to come out and support what they believe in. >> i never would have thought in a million years i would be out supporting trump, but here i am. again, my party wasn't my party. i was against trump in 2016. 2020 i also voted for biden. kamala harris, i mean, she did her announcements on ru paul drag show. >> but this trump ate my cat sign gives you an idea of the
2:13 am
vibe just across the street, where protesters were hanging out. a palo alto man voting for v.p. harris doesn't want people to think the city one sided. >> i called up a few people and said let's go out there. >> tonight, trump is getting some heat for comments he made. it happened during a press conference at a gulf club. he would withhold wildfire aid from california unless they change the state's water policies. >> gavin newsom is going to sign those papers. if he doesn't sign those papers, we won't give them money to put owl all the fires. if we don't give them the money, he's got problems. he's a lousy girlfriend. the timing is something to note. california is battling three major wildfires that have burned more than 100,000 acres. those fires
2:14 am
have destroyed dozens of buildings so far. today we had a conversation with the president of the california professional firefighters association. he was not happy. he did not mince words about what the former president said. >> you think i have dozen of fires right now. risking limbs in southern california disgust me. i can tell you this, california firefighters, we are on the job, we will always be on the job. california plays a massive role in supporting the federal government with tax revenue. one council leader told us the timing and message behind it could not have been worse. >> it's fairly reckless and quite irresponsible to make statements like this. particularly the time where he's visiting california while we are dealing with multiple wildfires. serious wildfires,
2:15 am
to say you're going to withhold money to help those people, those brave people do their jobs and protect our cities and the community and protect people and the property. it is just unconscionable. >> governor gavin newsom who is typically not shy when it comes to that. he admitted he will block the emergency disaster funds. it's california's wild for. tomorrow it could be hurricane flooding for north carolina. or assistance for those across the country. v.p. kamala harris made stops in red areas of pennsylvania to try to cut into the edge. >> people are exhausted with that stuff. exhausted. >> when an election comes up, some people might say they just don't have enough time to vote or forget to register for a ballot. if you don't think you have time or energy had, you
2:16 am
might want to think about it in space. we'll have more coming up in a few minutes. now to the niners, christian mccaffrey grew into a niners fan favorite last year for good reason. now there's a big question mark hanging over his future right now. a lot of people are wondering if nay are being cautious, what's going on with him, could it be more serious? just a lot of speculation. >> the 49ers will be looking to grab a road win against the vikings. it could be their first on the road since 1992, but they would have to do it without mccaffrey, who was limited in practice all week. now he's officially ruled out due to a lingering calf and achilles injury. in his place will be jordan mason. remember him? he's going to start for cmc, the second week in a row. injured reserve becomes a real possibility for mccaffrey. if
2:17 am
he is placed on i.r., he would need to miss an additional three weeks, and he would not return until week six against the seahawks. head coach kyle shanahan says a decision is coming soon. >> and that is something we're considering now, yeah. yesterday was his first day and having the moat pain in the next 24 hours. >> with mason, the niners should be okay to have him in there because he ran for a touchdown last week against the jets. it's a good idea to be careful with cmc. sara, this is something that happened with drake greenlaw last year, he had tendinitis. and then he ruptured his achilles. that's the last thing you want for christian mccaffrey this season. >> that burned into niners brain. longevity is a big issue when it comes to this sport in particular. we'll have to wait and see. but andrea nakano asked fans how they feel about the question mark, not only
2:18 am
heading for sunday's game, but the rest of the season. >> that is the last thing 49ers fans, really football fans want to see. >> reporter: a late scratch on monday night as christian mccaffrey watched his team beat the jets from the sideline. for the 49ers, this is another season with high expectations, especially from the fans. >> reporter: monique's family's love for the 49ers i will go back. their parents had tickets and now she makes a trip down to santa clara to watch her favorite team. when news broke mccaffrey would miss his second straight week, he was come back strong, and even though he's injured right now, he will come back strong. >> reporter: the 49ers will decide whether to place him on
2:19 am
the injured reserve list for four weeks or keep him on the active roster, hoping he could return sooner. many fans feel there is no need to rush their running back. it's the beginning of the season. why not rest him? >> that's why i'm hoping the niners will keep him for a few weeks, and i think that they will keep him healthy until he returns. >> reporter: in mccaffrey's absence, scoring 27 yards and a touchdown. the third year running back has shown he's more than capable of doing the job, but fans say in the post season, it would be nice to have mccaffrey back. >> i would love for his leadership. we need multiple players to take it to the team.
2:20 am
that's something the fewers team has never been about one player. >> and against the vikings sunday, where they start right here on kpix. being stranded in an airport is one thing. but these astronauts are stranded in space. what they're saying about the mission that forced them to stay on the view. giving them a second chance and some new things to play with. and coming up in the first alert forecast, it was 90 degrees today for some parts of the inland east bay. that's not going to happen again for a while. we are about to see a challenge change with a spill out of the gulf of alaska. there could be some light rain. forecast on that is coming up. >> all right, darren, thanks. plus the strange lego discovery that will make you
2:21 am
2:22 am
february. tay launched on what was suppose to be an eight-day mission on the boeing starliner in early june. some serious problems with the spacecraft prevented them from returning back to earth. now they have to catch a ride on a spacex dragon capsule in february of 2025. in a zero gravity press conference today, they said it was hard to watch the capsule leave without them. you can only imagine how that felt. they seem to be making the most of it. >> this is my happy place. i love being up here in space. it's just fun, you know. every day you do something that's work. you can do it upside down. so it adds a different perspective. >> eight months, ten months, whatever it is, we're going to do the very best job we can do every single day. that's what the folks that do this type of job have to do. you have to have that mindset because it is not an easy business. >> the hair is also quite the
2:23 am
look. they need to have a positive outlook or otherwise it will be panic. i can't even imagine they won't be on earth for the upcoming presidential election. astronauts say they will still be voting though. >> i sent down my request for the ballot today. as a matter of fact, they said they would get it to us. yes, it's an important role that we will all play as citizens, making it hard easy for us to do that. >> it's an important duty that we would have as citizens. being able to vote from space is cool. >> very cool and complicated. i too am having a hair day. >> yours would do great right now. >> i just keep thinking about the mental aspect of being stuck like that and being stuck where they are stuck. i just can't imagine. obviously they are trained for this, they've got the right mindset. they're scientists. they know what they're doing. we would be in
2:24 am
full bloom panic mode. >> right. they will quickly get past the bummer phase, and then they realize this is a part of the deal, right? you kind of have to factor that all in. let me show you something different just a few moments ago. trying to elevate the significant pattern change coming our way. we are taking a look obviously at the globe as a whole. i'm going to color this in and taking a look at temperatures in the atmosphere about 5,000 feoffment it's color coded. yellow is warmer, blue is colder. if you just want to see how air is getting transported. watch what happens to the big blue of spill out there and it will come down to pretty much our latitude. remove itself, you can see right there for california, you've got a big nice bubble of cool air coming our way. let's put some perspective on that because there's rain coming with it and it will get windy. we'll come back home. i'll bring up the map we've gotten so used
2:25 am
to looking at on here, which will by sunday those numbers are down to the low 70s. those are daytime highs on sunday. tomorrow will be a solid 15 degrees warmer than that. sunday, you get cooler. sunday, you'll also get breezy. watch what happens as we say good-bye to the temperatures. take a look at the wind streams. a good comparison for what the wind was doing today for the majority of the bay. we were taking a look at 20 miles an hour winds. when we visualize them that way, there is nothing too extreme. sunday it is different. they will pick up in intensity. and so this will be more like 25 to 30 miles an hour gusts on sunday. that's not bad enough for the wind
2:26 am
advisory. if you think back to tuesday, tuesday was a pretty windy day for a lot of us. it will probably be similar. and by the way look at what's coming out of the northwest as you see the stronger bands of orange and red on there, showing you 30 to 50 miles an hour winds. it's all part of the pattern that's driving in that pool of cool air that is also going to have a little bit of rain mixed in with that. that's the next thing i want to visualize. what might the rain potentially look like by the time we get to sunday afternoon and into monday morning. that is the time frame we're looking at here. we've gotten to the point now where we are close enough to the system, and we can start visualizing the radar returns. this is sunday afternoon. the light shades of green will tell you it will be light rain. i'll
2:27 am
remove what the radar pictures look like. is it tells us two things about this. one, equal opportunity. this isn't one of those things that will come through and pinpoint the north bay more than they will the south. the way the system is put together, it will be kind of -- the center of the low will spin overhead, and it will throw showers equally wherever they will go. we've all got the same chance. it won't be a lot. but it's a part of the forecast story on sunday, second half of the day, going into monday morning. let's get into the seven-day forecast. and monday is going to stand out the most on here obviously. we've got a misty looking terrarium on here. we know it's not a lot of rain, and it will be done in the afternoon. if you look past here, we have not warmed up a whole lot. it is kind of like it will open
2:28 am
the door, and there will be a couple of other weak pulses behind it. a couple of weak systems will come through, a drop and a chance for rain. all right, matt, over to you. >> almost to matt. he's coming up soon. first, he started out scared and alone. how one big area is helping this cub thrive. and niners looking for a second straight win, and will have to overcome a losing streak to get to it. plus, george kittle excited to return
2:29 am
>sara>remember remember the mountain lion cub that was rescued by the oakland zoo last month? here he is now. the zoo released this photo of briar, wrestling his favorite stuffie. the cub was found walking alone downtown el dorado county. they are looking for a forever home. until they get bigger. >> just adorable. what do you think a full grown vikings look like. we will find out on sunday when the 49ers will be without christian mccaffrey. vikings have one of the best homefield advantages. that's been true against san francisco. the last time the niners won there, a few good men will be at the box office.
2:30 am
>> you want answers. >> i want the truth. >> you can't handle the truth. >> the truth is the ninners have lost seven straight games in minnesota, including week seven of last season. it's as if the vikings fans needed extra fuel. sunday is also their home opener. >> i don't know if you know this, but the last time the niners won in minneapolis, you weren't even born. 1992 is the last time they won that. >> oh my god. it looks like we need to break that record. >> i i think it's one of the best atmospheres in the league honestly. it was my first game on the road as a rookie. switching over to baseball. taking batting practice with the giants. he goes deep at oracle to put this man anywhere in the lineup. that was more offense than san francisco had. rough start for logan webb against the padres. second
2:31 am
batter of the game, fernando tatis jr. takes webb deep for a two run homer. san diego went on to win 5-0. giants were held to just four hits. a's at the white sox. oakland's lawrence butler extended his hit street to 21 games. no score in the fourth. zach gelof hits a double into right center and turn its on the jets camera. and he is just able to get in under the tag, the first run of the game. a's win 82-0. chicago is 82 games below .500. that is not a typo. they are 33 out of 115. relegate them. pga at silverado. getting a nice wine break. after this shot on four, 148 yards out from the fairway, spins back into the hole for hughes who had an eagle tied for 10th. and

leads by one going into the weekend and in napa. kittle was forced to wear an iowa state helmet in the 49ers locker room after kittle's loss to brock purdy's cyclones last weekend. well kittle wasn't very happy. but brock purr diego kekhuna was. >> seeing him in an iowa state helmet, it's pretty sweet. >> i thought he looked good, man. that helmet looks so good. with george's hair coming out of it. i was like all right. >> a little tight on george kittle's head. a tough night tonight, the ballers are falling to the yellow high wheelers. their season comes to an end. it is very impressive. >> impressive. the golf clip we liked. and i imagine you would see a large beverage kicking back. >> not at ballers games this year. i didn't even get to get out to enjoy the game on my own without the work title. >> yeah, your work, it is just
2:33 am
a tough gig. >> it's tough being a sports anchor. >> yeah, no one is complaining here. thank you so much. the person got the sh as a mom, i understand the unique torment of the experience of accidentally stepping on a lego. it is up there on the pain scale. >> yeah, you know, you use choice language when that happens. if the thought of that makes you wince, imagine having one stuck in your nose for almost 30 years. one person in arizona said it happened to them. >> i was blowing my nose in the shower. i blew out a lego dot that has been in my nose for at least 26 years. i have had multiple breathing issues like asthma and sleep apnea. i feel
2:34 am
like this lego piece has been the culprit for the last26 years of my lime life. i'm shaken. >> i too am shaken. limited edition. 32-year-old andy norton says they think they know how it happens. in this video, they remember being six years old, shoving legos up their nose. >> yeah, that will do it. >> on purpose. one of them was the lego man. their mom used tweezers to fish them out. but one piece might have been left behind. i guess they said they feel a lot better now. >> that's a lot of money wasted on doctors. >> yeah, who apparently did not have like working scopes. you could find that easily. >> you yowled think so, right? >> legos are
