controversy with over the summer. cbs' jarred hill joins us with the latest developments. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. you know, speaking of protection around trump, his running mate is calling for the former president's level of security to be elevated to be the same as the current president, but his campaign isn't slowing down with less than two months until election day. >> thank you very much. >> reporter: former president donald trump back on the campaign trail in michigan days after a second suspected assassination attempt at his golf club in west palm beach. >> this guy was all set to do his number. >> reporter: the former president courted autoworkers at a town hall pledging to put a 200% tariff on cars built in china and mexico. >> you have countries stealing your business. >> we are winning this campaign. >> reporter: yesterday vice president kamala harris hit the trail in philadelphia, sitting down with the national association of black journalists, the same group trump appeared before back in july when he made controversial statements about her racial identity.

>> is she indian or black? >> reporter: harris said she spoke to trump about sunday's incident after he publicly blamed her and president joe biden for incendiary rhetoric he says led to the assassination attempts against him. >> i checked on him to see if he was okay. and i told him what i have said publicly, there is no place for political violence in our country. >> reporter: harris also criticized trump's false claims that haitian migrants are eating pets in springfield, ohio. >> it's a crying shame, spewing lies that are grounded in tropes that are age old. >> reporter: ohio's republican governor has sent additional state troopers to schools in springfield after the city received more than 30 bomb threats last week, saying the misinformation needs to stop. today harris is in d.c. speaking to an event for the democratic congress, while president trump

will hold a rally as you mentioned in uniondale, new york. >> all right, jarred hill in new york, thank you. the fbi is investigating suspicious packages sent to election officials in more than 15 states. some of the packages contained an unknown substance, and there are no reports of injuries or that any of the material was hazardous. some offices were evacuated, though, and some of the packages were intercepted at mail facilities. and turning now to the middle east and the sophisticated remote attack that blew up thousands of pagers used by hezbollah militants, killing at least nine. as the terror group threatens to retaliate against israel. the taiwanese company whose name is on the pagers says it did not make them. gold apollo says they were made by a company in budapest that has the right to use its brand name. there are still many questions about how this attack was executed. we do have a warning to viewers that some of you may find this video disturbing. here's elizabeth palmer. >> reporter: the pagers exploded wherever hezbollah fighters

happened to be -- in the street, at store checkouts, behind the wheel. in this bedroom, one blew a hole in the desk. [ sirens ] ambulances rushed the injured to hospitals. and emergency rooms filled with those injured by the tiny blasts powerful enough to shred faces and limbs. one high-profile casualty was iran's ambassador to lebanon who was slightly hurt. it took no time for the tv station to pin the blame. "we hold the israeli enemy responsible," he says, "for this criminal aggression." hezbollah's leader hassan nasrallah had told his men months ago to get rid of their smartphones to foil israeli tracking. but the low-tech pager alternative has proved deeply embarrassing. sima shine is ex-head of research at mosad, israel's

foreign intelligence agency. what's the psychological effect of this? what are the hezbollah commanders thinking tonight? >> they aren't safe anywhere, and this is something very difficult. they are not safe anywhere, their communication is not safe. >> reporter: are they going to feel obliged to respond? >> i think they will retaliate, yeah. no question. >> reporter: israel and hezbollah have been trading fire aross the border with lebanon for months. we may just have seen the opening salvo in a much bigger war. everybody is wondering how the pagers were booby-trapped and how they were detonated. we may not get answers to that for some time. but sima shine told me that this was such a sophisticated piece of sabotage, the saboteurs got deep inside hezbollah's equipment supply line that it must have been the work of a state. elizabeth palmer, cbs news, tel aviv. disgraced hip-hop mogul sean "diddy" combs remains behind

bars held without bail, accused of presiding over a sordid empire of sex crimes protected by blackmail and violence. his lawyer is expected to appeal that bail decision as early as today. combs pleaded not guilty to the charges. cbs' jericka duncan has the story from court. >> reporter: 54-year-old sean "diddy" combs was led away in handcuffs after being denied bail. his attorney blasted the decision. >> he's a fighter, and he's going to fight this. >> reporter: combs was charged with sex trafficking, racketeering, and prostitution after a months long homeland security investigation. >> between at least 2008 and the present combs abused, threatened, and coerced victims to fulfill his sexual desires. >> reporter: prosecutors allege that combs used his business empire to force women to engage in sexual acts with professional sex workers at events he called freak offs. it was there that prosecutors

say combs was violent toward the women, alleging he would hit, kick, threw objects at, and at times dragged victims by their hair. >> the freak off sometimes lasted days at a time and often involved a variety of narcotics such as ketamine, ecstasy, and ghb. >> reporter: the charges come after homeland security raided combs' homes in l.a. and miami last march. agents say they seized three ar-15s with defaced serial numbers, ammunition, narcotics, and recordings of some of the sex acts which prosecutors say he used to manipulate his victims. last november combs' former girlfriend, cassie ventura, filed a lawsuit alleging combs raped, physically abused, and sex trafficked her during their ten-year relationship. combs reached a settlement in that case, denying any wrongdoing. but six months later, video surfaced from 2016 showing combs hitting, kicking, and dragging ventura by the hair. >> when you are looking at a

racketeering charge which carries life in prison, when you're looking at sex trafficking charges, this is someone who really may never see the light of day. >> reporter: when prosecutors argue that combs did not deserve bail, they referenced jeffrey epstein and r. kelly. they said those cases were similar in nature. but combs' attorney fired back and said you can't compare them because those cases involved children who could not consent. jericka duncan, cbs news, new york. flames continue to shoot out of a liquid natural gas pipeline in a houston suburb two days after a vehicle hit an above-ground valve. video obtained by cbs houston shows the moment an suv crashed through a fence on monday, struck the valve, and ignited a massive fire. authorities have not said if the driver survived. dozens of people who were evacuated have not been able to return home. coming up, court confession in france. a man admits to drugging his wife in a shocking rape case. and later, protecting

after he was arrested. 50 other men are on trial for raping gisele pelicot. she told the court she feels completely betrayed. her ex-husband apologized and asked his family for forgiveness. "politico" says for the second time republicans blocked a bill on ivv protections. it would require public and private insurance coverage for ivf and other fertility treatments. republicans call the bill an election year stunt saying lawmakers are hypocrites for insisting they support ivf. only two republicans voted for the bill. lisa miami hurricanes ski -- lisa murkowski and susan collins. and the "los angeles times" says california governor gavin newsom signed several artificial intelligence-related bills. some of the bills signed would give actors more protection from a.i. use of their likeness

seal. instagram making safety changes for teens, and a big decision day for the federal reserve. here's shanelle kaul with today's cbs "moneywatch." >> reporter: u.s. stocks closed mixed tuesday ahead of a key decision from the federal reserve. the dow lost 15 points. the nasdaq was up 35, and the s&p 500 gained one point. for the first time in four years the federal bank is set to cut interest rates. the benchmark rate is now at its highest point in 23 years, but economists widely forecast the fed to bring that down by a quarter of a percentage point. the move would be welcome news to prospective home buyers and those with credit card debt and loans. big safety changes coming to instagram. the social media platform is automatically making teen accounts private for anyone under 18, restricting what type of content they can see and muting notifications overnight.
