a second wave of deadly explosions rocked lebanon, this time targeting walkie-talkies. what israel is saying about the new phase of war. manhunt over. the discovery near the scene of the kentucky highway shooting. the clue that led two private sleuths to the area. and historic decision. the fed taking aggressive action and cutting interest rates more than expected. what it means for your wallet. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we start with the race for the white house. one of the nation's largest unions is not endorsing a presidential candidate for the first time in nearly 30 years. it comes as the nation's immigration crisis takes center stage on the campaign trail. former president donald trump leaned on his plans to -- for restrictions, while vice president kamala harris went after trump's promise to deport millions of people in the country illegally. cbs' jarred hill is joining us from new york with more on this. good morning.

>> reporter: good morning. this is where former president trump was yesterday, new york not known as a battleground state, although local republicans and the former president are seeing this potentially as part of a battleground island with control of congress up for grabs. amid heightened security, former president donald trump rallied in long island. a must-win district for house republicans in a deeply blue stat. -- stat. >> we can win new york. >> reporter: trump vowed to reverse a cap on the state and local tax deduction known as salt, a cap he created with his 2017 tax cuts law. the former president also promised to visit two cities in ohio and colorado claiming they're under siege by migrants. >> they're destroying our country. we're getting them out. >> reporter: in washington vice president kamala harris slammed trump's immigration proposals at an event for the congressional hispanic caucus institute. >> they have pledged to carry out the largest deportation, a mass deportation, in american history.

how's that going to happen? massive raids? >> reporter: in a possible blow to the harris campaign, for the first time since 1996 the teamsters union declined to endorse the democratic presidential nominee, choosing instead to endorse neither candidate. the union released internal polling showing more members support trump. >> it's a great honor. they're not going to endorse the democrats. >> reporter: multiple local chapters of teamsters have endorsed harris including in michigan. >> we can't allow donald trump to become president. >> reporter: the former president is going to be staying in new york for a bit today where he is set to meet with jewish americans in brooklyn. the vice president is back in the battleground state of michigan for a virtual unity call with oprah. >> jarred hill in new york. thank you. the fbi says iranian hackers stole information from the trump campaign and sent it unsolicited to the biden campaign before the president dropped out. a former biden campaign official tells cbs news that material was

not used. the trump campaign has accused iran of trying to influence the election through federal -- though federal officials say there's no evidence that the recipients of the stolen material responded. to the middle east now where israel is signaling the start of a new phase of war as the focus shifts to its northern border with lebanon. can it comes as the terror group hezbollah is hit with a second walkie-talkies and handheld radios. you see the result of the blast in the beirut skyline. 20 were killed and hundreds injured. imtiaz tyab reports from the lebanon capital. >> reporter: in beirut, even funerals are no longer safe. after a second wave of mass explosions including at a burial procession for four people killed in tuesday's pagers-turned-bomb attacks. eyewitnesses say this time walkie-talkies carried by hezbollah members exploded

right before their eyes. the explosions were once again simultaneous and went off in cities and towns across lebanon. hezbollah accuses israel of turning thousands of its communications devices into deadly weapons. with lebanese security officials saying it was icom ic-v82 transceiver radios or walkie-talkies that detonated killing at least 20 and wounding over 450. although smaller in scale than tuesday's mass explosions involving pagers that killed 12 and left over 2,700 with injuries so serious the emergency doctor dania el hallak who treated around 200 patients said she's never seen anything like it before. >> we started seeing people all blown up. eyes i -- -- i eyeballs ruptured abdomen out, thighs open. it was terrible. >> reporter: a humiliated hezbollah has vowed to take revenge against israel as cbs

news has learned a taiwanese company, gold apollo, authorized the use of branding on the pagers bought by hezbollah through a budapest-based company called company bac based in this residence. the hungarian government told us it is only a trading intermediary with no manufacturing site which means where the pagers were made remains an open question. so, too, is israel's role in all of in israel's defense minister said a, quote, new phase of the war is under way with the focus now on its northern front with hezbollah. as cbs news has learned the israeli military has moved its 98th division to a position in the north. imtiaz tyab, cbs news, beirut. a second judge denied bail for sean "diddy" combs as he waits in jail for what could be a year for his trial on federal sex trafficking and racketeering charges. the hip-hop mogul was arrested monday in new york. he offered to post a $50 million

bond, give up his cellphone and internet access and not to allow any women to visit except for family and the mothers of his children. the judge said no amount of bail could ensure combs would not tamper with witnesses. disgraced movie mogul harvey weinstein is back in a new york courtroom to face a new sex crime charge. he's accused of sexually abusing a woman in a hotel in 2006. he pleaded not guilty. weinstein remains in custody while awaiting retrial on other sex charges in new york after a state appeals court overturned his conviction earlier this year. he's also serving a 16-year sentence for rape in los angeles. now to much-needed financial relief for american consumers. the federal reserve is slashing its key borrowing rate by a half a percentage point, more than expected. the unusually large cut is expected to impact home mortgage rates, credit card debt, and many types of loans. cbs' jo ling kent has details on what this means for your wallet.

>> reporter: after months of anticipation, the federal reserve aggressively reduced the cost of borrowing for the first time in four years with a half-point rate cut. >> our patient approach over the past year has paid dividends. >> reporter: the central bank is sending rates down from their more than 20-year high. what message are you trying to send american consumers, the american people, with this unusually large rate cut? >> i would just say that the u.s. economy is in a good place, and our decision today is designed to keep it there. >> reporter: inflation has cooled off from its peak of more than 9% in 2022 to 2.5% last month as the jobs market shows signs of weakening. is the federal reserve effectively declaring a decisive victory over inflation and rising prices? >> no. we're not. we're not saying mission accomplished or anything like that. i have to say, though, we're encouraged by the progress that we have made. >> reporter: the effects of this rate cut will take time to trickle down to consumers.

for credit card debt a half-point reduction will mean $2 off monthly interest payments on a $5,000 balance. payments on a new five-year, $35,000 car loan will drop by $8 a month. and monthly payments on a $50,000 home equity line would go down by $21. >> i may need a new vehicle, but those are definitely considerations that you have to take in mind during these tough times. >> reporter: this jumbo rate cut is welcome news for gladys ospina in california who wants to update her car and help her brother buy his first home as soon as possible. >> it gives us options, in the case of my brother to be able to help him and see him in a better position where he's able to buy his first home. >> reporter: as for what's ahead, the fed forecasts there will be two more rate cuts in novembe and december totaling another half point with more coming next year. chair powell emphasized they are deciding meeting by meeting. jo ling kent, cbs news,

an accident at an apple orchard in wisconsin sent 25 people to the hospital. authorities say a tractor was towing two wagons carrying elementary school children, parents, and chaperones when the wagons collided yesterday. one wagon careened down a hill and overturned. three people suffered life-threatening injuries. a new lawsuit in the baltimore bridge collapse, and the manhunt for the suspected interstate shooter is over. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the lexington herald leader" reports a kentucky couple behind the hatfield and mccoy museum say they found the body of a man who allegedly shot five people on an interstate this month. fred and sheila mccoy say they

were looking for joseph couch for several days after he allegedly opened fire hitting a dozen vehicles and wounding five people. the couple say they were live streaming yesterday when they found the body along with two state troopers. >> we come out of here and seen a bunch of vultures up there. we figured just -- they was so few of them. we come back sunday and monday, and more and more. today there was about 50. >> authorities believe the body is joseph couch. police did not reveal a cause of death but did say a weapon was found at the site. the couple used to operate the now-closed hatfield and mccoy museum and are descendants of the feuding families. "the hill" says the department of justice is suing the owner of the cargo ship that collapsed the bridge in march when it lost power and slammed into a support column killing six construction workers on the bridge. the lawsuit claims the crash was caused by improper maintenance and safety violations on the

a michigan sheriff's deputy turned daredevil to come to the aid of a driver having a medical emergency. the 63-year-old man was driving his pickup erratically when deputies pulled alongside in their car. deputy nicole miron climbed through the window of the moving patrol car and into the moving truck to stop it. the truck driver was taken to the hospital. a trader joe's fan favorite is back for a limited time, and the party is over for tupperware. here's carissa lawson with today's cbs "moneywatch." >> reporter: stocks ended in the red even after the federal reserve cut interest rates for the first time in four years. the dow closed down 103 points. the nasdaq lost 54, and the s&p 500 dropped 16. tupperware known for its resealable plastic containers and pioneering tupperware parties for direct sales to consumers has filed for bankruptcy. it comes after years of

nasa, sir. >> nasa? i had no idea they hired -- >> there are quite a few women working in the space program. >> least i can do is give you all an escort. >> three negro women -- >> that's the scene from the 2017 hit movie "hidden figures" that introduced the world to a group of brilliant black women working behind the scenes at nasa. those women received a long overdue honor yesterday on capitol hill. katherine johnson, dorothy vaughan, mary jackson, and aerospace engineer christine darden were all recognized with the congressional gold medal, the highest civilian honor bestowed by congress. darden, the lone surviving member, watched the ceremony from home. prolific author nelson demille who authored "plum island" and "the general's daughter" has died. demille's family telling cbs news that he died on tuesday following a nine-month battle with esophageal cancer. demille's website says he authored 23 books including two with his son alex. he was 81.

a new children's book that chronicles the lives of travis and jason kelce is due out next month.
