downtown, things were lively and happy. this is what it sounded like on a busy friday night. knee events going on. portugal, the man, is performing. the best part about this concert, it's free. that means people are spending much elsewhere, bringing much needed life back to san francisco. a long list of events if san francisco from the portugal, the man, concert with snack day, green day performing at oracle park. oktoberfest on front street, and even greek fest in the mission. these events drew not only locals, but others from the entire bay area and beyond. >> also there is a lot for the city to give to people. to take that opportunity and do something with it. >> reporter: vanessa and her boyfriend, dominic, didn't feel unsafe at all as they made their way to the concert. in fact they were impressed with how alive the city felt on a friday night. >> you know, coming out to this

area five, ten years ago, definitely seemed a lot more sketchy and dicey. seeing all these people here, just having a good time, having a safe time. it's definitely refreshing to see. >> reporter: mayor london breed was also enjoying many of the events as she mingled with a crowd at oktoberfest. she said change needs to happen to city hall to bring events back. >> san francisco has to become a city of yes. notoriously for being a city of no, you can't do something. >> reporter: and planning to bring several concerts to the city. city leaders are trying to change perception of downtown. mayor breed believes the city needs to invest in itself to bring people back. >> reporter: we're making it so much fun, with our money is where our mouths are at.

>> reporter: increasing nighttime foot traffic. during the day, it's been a struggle to bring office workers back. office vacancy numbers are at an all-time high, expected to go up this year. that's according to a commercial real estate service group. restaurants like ciao pascal are seeing the difference these companies are making firsthand. it was packed with wait times of an hour. >> it's been really nice. the civic center shows us more. >> reporter: we came here with the intentions of checking everything out. we'll obviously but the these areas in the area. >> reporter: they see the positive changes in the city. they feel these events are helping to erase the city's negative image. >> you, on a friday, would certainly not see even like 20% of this group roaming around here. so it is encouraging people to get out and about and

explore the city. okay, we're heading into the weekend, finally. are we allowed to say that? we are now. our mount diablo camera captured a deep orange sunset tonight. very pretty, paul. we sped it up into this time lapse. felt like fall this week, but sounds like we're heading into a warm up? >> right. this is the last final weekend of summer. fog has wall load up downtown san francisco over the past several hours. this is the view from salesforce tower. a little artistic shot. and temperatures today, topped out a little bit closer to average into the mid-80s for inland parts of the east bay. only 65 degrees in san francisco. but temperatures around the bay and along the coast will return to near average tomorrow. inland, about 3 to 5 degrees above normal. mostly 80s, but some of the

warmer spots getting up to 90 degrees. the heat risk today in antioch and brightwood, it means we're getting into the low end of the not grate weather, that there will be hotter spots in the bay area. the irony is it coincides with the beginning of autumn, which officially arrives sunday morning. that's when inland temperatures by sunday afternoon are going to get back into the 90s with the real noticeable change. we will lose two and a half minutes of daylight each day over the course of four to five weeks, guys? >> oh man, the hits keep on coming. >> you're welcome. well, most of us are focused on the relief of the weekend ahead. it is still a

little bittersweet with a's fan. the countdown to the final out at the sol coliseum. the whole season has felt like the beginning of the end for the a's. it really sunk in tonight for the fans. marking the beginning of their final homestand at the coliseum. a's hosting the new york yankees for two more games this weekend. they're off on monday. then they begin their final three-game series in oakland against the rangers before they finish this season out in seattle. as for what's next? major league baseball? they want their new stadium built in las vegas. of course, all the concerns over player safety due to the weather and the turf, whether or not that minor league facility could host a major league team. but the league still will move in

that direction. it's definitely a sad night in oakland, and it will be a tough week for so many fans going to such a historic place to watch baseball. jeffrey schaub has other anyone who has lived in the bay area for a long time such as yourself. you have memories going to the coliseum. and despite the state that the coliseum sits in now, it's not the west because of how ownership just sort of whipped aside. it's sad for fans. >> it is a sad time, a sad week ahead. matt, thank you so much. this was suppose to be the opening weekend for the san francisco symphony as well, but the first concert of the season was canceled with just hours notice. over 100 musicians walked off the job and took to the picket lines. what they are demanding once again. >> reporter: the san francisco

symphony is off to a rocky start this season. musicians, patrons, looking forward to the performances of the party's reck yum. the three-day performances were canceled as symphony chorus had a strike demanding better wages. >> whenever a cut needs to happen, we are always the lowest hanging fruit. we support cousins who gets left out. he >> we are fed scraps if that. >> reporter: negotiations have been ongoing for over two years. both sides agreed before the 2023 season to freeze wages. that means no raise and no reduction. then talks turned this year. >> the first raise they gave us

was a reduction in programming. >> reporter: after back and forth, the symphony offered to hold with current wages, which is with a led to the strike. >> if it will be undervalued and insulted. it's heartbreaking. >> reporter: the rest of the members are volunteers. the symphony pays $22,000 for those 32 chorusser. those members are under a separate contract. >> reporter: the orchestra's concert expires in may. we expect focus will be on them. >> reporter: elliott has been with the course for 11 years.

a mansion from the hollywood hills turned the pristine hillside home into something that looks like a frat house after seeing too many ragers. it's not just an eyesore, neighbors are worried it is kind of a ticking time bomb. jasmine deal has more on how it ended up like this. >> what a mess. >> reporter: it is a mess. this abandoned mansion in the hollywood hills is a target for taggers. >> i feel people started showing up. >> reporter: cell phone video shows at least one vandal at work spray painting the walls of the home off the drive. fed up neighbors say this house has been vacant for years and falling into disrepair. >> reporter: a few squatters have made a few homes here and very recently you can see the tagging that has been done. >> and there were gas leaks. and then they built the wall.

it's obviously something that kept breaking in. >> reporter: the lapd responded to six calls just this past week for tagging and trespassing. property records show the owner john powers, a middle producer. his father is the owner of the philadelphia baseball team, reportedly owned this abandoned mansion on sunset plaza drive, which has also been overrun by squatters. we would try contacting him with no luck. >> he has more than enough money to take care of it. so we are not sure why. >> reporter: this house is just torn up. the front door just completely gone. you can see here the electricity is just off. now the department of building and safety and the city says work has been underway here. they are now trying since early this morning to come in, drain the pool, paint the house, and somehow fix the fencing. >> getting the things safe, so that we don't have to worry constantly about someone setting the place on fire. >> l.a. city council member says orders from the city have been ignored and a lean was

issued against this house. and for the surrounding community, and the property owners like the ones at 7575 drive must take accountability for their property or face action from the city. neighbors hope that is true as they are even willing to buy the property themselves. >> that is a nice option. >> can you imagine just buying your neighbors out? >> yeah. >> well, you are still here because you cannot do that. >> nope. >> it is weather and puts in an extra spring in our step. plus it's the weekend. we are getting into a drier and warmer pattern. the reason is the big blue h on our feet. it's high pressure in the upper levels.

just a hill of air that will be staying just off the coast. the position of this is such that it can result in gusty offshore winds if it was a little closer to the shoreline. but it's mainly going to maintain their position, which means light offshore winds are the most likely scenario as we head through the weekend into early next week. enough to push some slightly warmer air towards the coast, but not enough to significantly boost the fire threat or push any air down the coast. you can be thankful for that. we are talking about something that's in the future. at the moment, we still have quite a bit of fog out there. the fog has kind of parted around the top of the salesforce tower. but it is still thick around for the mark hopkins hotel. temperatures right now, a mix of 50s and 60s, not a whole lot of variation. and the cool spot, 61 degrees, the least cool location in san jose and in concourse. everybody will end up in the 50s. the fog will be

widespread despite that trend. and let's track that fog as we head through the rest of tonight. 7:00 tomorrow morning, then you can see the fog making a big push into the inland valleys. it is a more compressed marine layer thanks to the weather on top of us. still deep enough surrounding the bay and make its way into the interior valleys. it won't take too long for the fog to dissipate as we would simulate the fog 2:00 p.m. tomorrow. backing up to the coast with the channel of fog reaching the golden gate and even partial clearing will allow temperatures to warm up a little bit more than the past couple of days. and returning to 70 in san francisco in the mid-70s in oakland. temperatures in the santa clara valley returning to a few degrees above average. with the hottest temperatures as usual, east of the oakland hills within a degree or two of either side there. it's hot. it's not out of control hot. just about three to four degrees above normal. temperatures in the north bay are making their way up into the low to mid-80s with some of

the hotter spots inland. let's take those numbers off because a lot of people are looking at those numbers. representing tomorrow's temperatures with colors instead. the warmest temperatures representing in orange. even some green along the coast indicating cool temperatures. look what happens by pond. oh, the map looks a lot ackier with a lot of red, even deeper maroon color indicating higher heat risk values that will be on the map for early next week. monday looks like the hottest day. let's take a look at that forecast and how hot is hot? well, some of the warmer spots are approaching 80 degrees. while it will be closer through the rest of next week, we will be running a few degrees above average to finish the entire month of september and head into early october. even the first week of october looks like it will be a little bit above normal for those daily high temperatures. around the bay, a couple of lower 80s.
