civilians in lebanon. targeted attack. the hunt is on in birmingham, alabama, for multiple suspects following a mass shooting that left at least four dead and more than a dozen wounded. and a deadly midair crash. the search for answers today after two small planes collide in the sky over california. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we start with the crisis in the middle east and the growing fears of an all-out war between israel and lebanon's terror group hezbollah with both sides stepping up attacks. this morning the israeli military is urging civilians in southern lebanon to move away from houses hezbollah is using to store weapons including cruise missiles as it launches new strikes on terrorist targets. hezbollah fired more than 100 rockets deep into northern israel with the second in command calling it a battle without limits. as for the fighting in gaza, israeli prime minister benjamin

netanyahu is set to be considering a plan to force all palestinian civilians out of northern gaza in order to starve out hamas fighters and force the release of hostages. netanyahu said about half of the 100 hostages still in captivity are believed to be alive. cbs' chris livesay is in tel aviv with the latest. >> reporter: a barrage of hezbollah rockets and drones shattered the silence over northern israel, all in response to this -- an israeli strike on friday in southern beirut that killed top hezbollah commander ibrahim akiel. given a hero's burial in the same hezbollah stronghold where he died. the israeli military says the war's center of gravity is now moving north away from hamas and toward hezbollah where ongoing clashes have forced nearly 70,000 israelis to flee.

[ speaking in a global language ] "we will safely return the residents to their homes," israel's army chief of staff said today, if hezbollah did not understand this, it will receive a blow and another blow until it understands." but israel hasn't forgotten about hamas and gaza. a school where hundreds of people were sheltering was struck west of gaza city. this just a day after the hamas-run health ministry said a strike on another school left at least 22 dead, half of them children. one of them a pregnant woman. israel said the school had been turned into a hamas command center. in the occupied west bank, during a live broadcast, israeli forces shut down the ramallah bureau of al jazeerz as a journalist read the warrant. so far israel has not claimed responsibility for those exploding beepers and walkie-talkies, but prime

minister benjamin netanyahu did say that israel dealt hezbollah, quote, a sequence of blows it could not imagine. chris livesay, cbs news, tel aviv. hamas' leader in gaza, yahya sinwar, hasn't been heard from for a relatively long time sparking questions about his fate. the israeli military says it's investigating whether he may have been killed or wounded in one of the recent bombings, but officials point out there is no evidence of either. amid the tensions in the middle east, 100 world leaders are gathering in new york city for the start of the u.n. general assembly today. president biden is set to address the body tomorrow, and it's likely to be his last major appearance on the world stage before he steps down as president. security is tight throughout the city. police say they're expecting protests, but there are no specific credible threats. and we are now just 43 days away from election day, and new cbs news polls show vice president kamala harris has gained a slight edge over former

president donald trump. today he's back in battleground pennsylvania while harris is in washington with no events scheduled. cbs' naomi ruchim is joining us now with the latest from the campaign trail. >> reporter: good morning. vice president kamala harris raised $27 million at a fundraiser here in new york over the weekend. her largest financial win since claiming the top of the democratic ticket. this as early voting is already under way in some states, and the prospect of another presidential debate seems dead in the water. >> join me on the debate stage -- >> reporter: vice president kamala harris urged former president donald trump to debate her again yesterday after she accepted cnn's invitation for a late october debate. but over the weekend, trump declined. >> the problem with another debate is that it's just too late. voting has already started. >> reporter: indeed early voting began friday in south dakota, virginia, and minnesota.

>> i'm voting for all the democrats. every last one. >> i voted this time for trump. >> reporter: it comes as new cbs polls show the vice president with a slight edge nationally, and in the battleground states. harris has also made gains with voters who say the economy is a major factor. now just six points behind trump. >> i'm going to be giving a speech this week that is really to outline my plan for the economy. >> reporter: trump was asked if he thinks he'll run again in four years if he loses in november. >> no, i don't. i don't see that at all. i think hopefully we're going to be successful. >> reporter: while campaigning in north carolina over the weekend, trump made no mention of gop gubernatorial candidate mark robinson who's come under fire over inflammatory posts he allegedly made on an adult website. the harris campaign is airing ads in an attempt to link the two in the must-win swing state. trump's running mate, ohio

senator vance, hits the trail in north carolina today. when asked about the republican candidate for governor, mark robinson, in an interview over this weekend, he said, quote, allegations are not reality, adding that the issue will play out in the court of public opinion. anne-marie? >> naomi ruchim in new york, thank you very much. cbs news will host the only vice presidential debate between senator j.d. vance and governor tim walz on tuesday, october 1st, in new york. join us here on cbs. our streaming network, cbs news 24/7, and paramount plus. congressional leaders have reached a deal on a short-term spending bill that will avert a partial government shutdown. the agreement funds federal agencies to mid-december, allowing lawmakers time to work on a longer deal until after the november presidential election. an additional $231 million was added to the current budget to bolster the secret service after

two apparent assassination attempts against former president trump. now to birmingham, alabama, the site of the nation's latest mass shooting. police are searching for the gunmen who opened fire on a group of people killing at least four of them and wounding 17 others. it happened in a neighborhood filled with restaurants and bars often crowded on weekend nights. cbs' cristian benevides reports. >> reporter: the gunfire erupted on a birmingham street in a neighborhood of restaurants and bars near the city's university. >> sounded like about 12 shots of a burst round gun went off. sounded like three rounds at once, and we heard dot, dot, dot, dot, and saw a bunch of cops. >> reporter: police say it was a targeted attack involving multiple shooters. dozens of people caught in the crossfire. >> that's 21 people whose lives were forever changed. that's 21 families that were -- someone destroyed and some are

just altered. >> reporter: more than 100 shell casings were recovered from the scene. investigators say it points to a weapon capable of automatic fire. the mayor saying his city is suffering. >> gun violence is an epidemic level and an epidemic crisis in our country. and unfortunately, the city of birmingham finds itself unfortunately at the tip of that spear. >> reporter: officials say there have been at least 105 homicides in the city so far in year. police now seeking help to identify the shooters. >> the public's assistance is where it's going come down to at the end of the day. that's the biggest piece that will expedite this investigation. >> reporter: police said the intended target of the shooting is believed to be among the dead. they also said that they believe that at least one of the shooters had an illegal switch on his weapon, allowing it to be used as a fully automatic. cristian benevides, cbs news, birmingham, alabama. we are keeping an eye on a

away, but one is still on the loose. a 73-year-old kidnapping case is solved, and a deadly midair collision. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the los angeles times" reports one pilot was killed when two small planes collided in midair. it happened yesterday over the city of lancaster about 65 miles north of los angeles. the other pilot was not hurt. there was no one else in -- on the planes, and there is no word on what caused the crash, but the faa and the ntsb are investigating. "the new york times" says gettysburg college is investigating a report of a student scratching a racial slur on another student's chest. a pennsylvania family says that their son, a member of the swim team, had a racial slur etched on his body earlier this month by another member of the swim team using a box cutter. the school said the student who scratched the slur is no longer enrolled at the college. authorities say
