watching and waiting. floridians waiting for a storm to intensify into a hurricane as it moves into the warm gulf waters. assassination plot, new chilling details about the suspect accused in the second attempt on donald trump's life, his apparent handwritten note his apparent handwritten note and getaway plan. captioning funded by cbs well, well, good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we start with the middle east where tensions are at a boiling point as israel steps up its military campaign against the terror group hezbollah while the u.s. works to de-escalate the crisis. lebanon's health ministry says nearly 500 people were killed and more than 1,600 wounded in the deadliest day of fighting since the 2006 war. the israeli military says it continued hitting dozens of hezbollah targets overnight after the barrage of strikes. hezbollah continues to fire

back. the idf says about 20 rockets crossed from lebanon into israeli airspace overnight. we begin with cbs's chris livesay in tel aviv. >> reporter: missile after missile. more than 1,300 strikes slamming into southern lebanon. this terrified family watched the bombardment hit their town. calm down, mother, and pray, a man says. the lebanese health ministry says dozens of women and children are among the victims, but each target, israel claims, was a location used for storing hezbollah weapons, including cruise missiles. according to the israel defense forces, these videos appear to capture secondary explosions after the initial air strikes as those weapons detonate. israel's government is warning civilians to flee from buildings used by the u.s. designated terror group. >> they place rockets in your living rooms and missiles in your garage.

those rockets and missiles are aimed directly at our cities, directly at our citizens. >> reporter: by the many thousands, lebanese motorists clogged the highways to escape. albeit a fraction of the israeli onslaught, there were no reports of israeli deaths. some rockets struck around the northern israeli city of haifa where we visited a hospital. toevade a missile strike, doctors and nurses are now working out of the underground parking garage. it's more than 200,000 square feet. the doctor says they've been prepping for years. >> we always kind of hoped we would never use it. >> we're in a bunker with many, many more beds. what does that say about the war? >> we need to be prepared for the worst-case scenario. >> reporter: israel's army chief of staff says it's targeting the combat infrastructure that hezbollah has been building for the past 20 years and preparing for the next phases, but the big

question is if those next phases will include a ground invasion. chris livesay, cbs news, tel aviv. the growing threat of war in the middle east is looming over this week's gathering of world leaders at the united nations. today president biden is set to deliver what is likely his last major speech on a world stage as he tries to cement his foreign policy legacy. cbs's jarred hill is joining us just outside the u.n. headquarters in manhattan. jarred, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. president biden came into office promising to rejuve nail the united nations, but his administration might be shaped by the handling of the conflicts to be addressed here today. heightened security in new york afer president joe biden landed in the city monday ahead of his final address before the u.n. general assembly as commander in chief.

the speech comes as israel dropped a barrage of missiles on southern lebanon on monday. nearly 500 killed, including dozens of women and children, according to lebanese officials. but israel says each target was a location used for hezbollah weapons. they have escalated attacks on israel in solidarity with hamas since the october 7th attacks. >> i have a message for the people of lebanon. israel's war is not with you. it's with hezbollah. >> reporter: on monday they planned to send an additional u.s. troops to the middle east. they urge the american people to leave while commercial flights are still available. >> we're in constant contact with our counterparts and working to de-escalate. >> reporter: president biden is expected to high light u.s.'s role and ongoing efforts to strike a cease-fire deal between israel and hamas, but experts say the real work will happen

out of the spotlight. >> the meetings on the margins of the general assembly between world leaders that we don't actually get to listen to or take part in is likely where we'll see the more substantive discussion. >> reporter: but little hope here will move the needle. president biden has a number of those bilateral meetings on his schedule, but not with israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu. anne-marie, netanyahu's trip has been delayed by a number of days because of the conflicts happening in lebanon. >> jarred hill at the u.n., thank you so much. a weather system in the caribbean is expected to become tropical storm helene today and then strengthen into a hurricane. florida governor ron desantis declared a state of emergency for most of the state as residents prepare for the storm. storm surge and watches have been issued for a portion of southwest florida. forecasters say the storm is expected to become a category 1

hurricane tomorrow and pick up strength in the warm gulf waters. it's expected to make landfall thursday on florida's northern gulf coast as a powerful category 3. heavy rain is also forecast for the southeastern u.s. with a threat of flash floods. prosecutors say the man accused in the apparent assassination attempt of donald trump at his florida golf course wrote a note much earlier saying he intended to kill the former president. authorities say ryan routh left the note in a box which also contained ammunition and other items. prosecutors say he was in the area of trump's gulf course and mar-a-lago residence multiple days and months before he was arrested and had a google search of how to travel from florida to mexico on one of his phones. routh also had a handwritten list of dates and venues where trump had or was expected to appear in the lead-up to the election. the justice department says it plans to charge him with

attempting assassination. former president donald trump will return to pennsylvania for a rally there next weekend, this as vice president kamala harris weighs a trip to the southern border this week as both candidates focus on battleground states with six weeks until election day. cbs's caitlin huey-burns reports. >> reporter: with just six weeks to go until election day, new cbs news polling shows vice president kamala harris holds a slight edge over former president donald trump across the battleground states, helped in part by a slight improvement in voters' views on the economy. speaking to farmers in pennsylvania, trump laid out another part of his economic agenda, saying he would put a 200% tariff on john deere imports if the company moves production to mexico as planned. >> it's hurting our farmers. it's hurting our manufacturing. >> reporter: this week trump is on a battleground state blitz, which includes stops in north

carolina, georgia, and michigan. harris is also ramping up her campaign schedule with stops planned in pennsylvania, arizona, and nevada. while campaigning in north carolina over the weekend, trump made no mention of embattled republican candidate for governor, mark robinson, who allegedly made racist remarks years ago on a porn site and who trump once called martin luther king on steroids. robinson has denied the reports. >> we have full confidence we can go on. >> reporter: what won't go on, another debate among the candidates for president. >> let's have another debate. there's more to talk about. >> reporter: this weekend trump said no. >> she's done one debate. i've done two. it's too late to do another. i'd love to in many ways, but it's too late. >> reporter: after nearly a decade at the helm of the gop, trump was asked if he saw himself running again in four years if he lost this time around.

do want him to leave for good. a supermarket gunman is sentenced to life in prison and news on the alabama shooting. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the "associated press" reports officials in alabama are pleading for public's help on a weekend mass shooting. police are searching for the shooter who opened fire on a crowd outside a popular night spot killing four people and wounding others. officials are offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to the arrest. authorities say the victims were caught in the crossfire of what they believe was a pate hid on one of the people who was killed. the "denver post" says a gunman who killed ten people at a boulder, colorado, supermarket in 2021 was found guilty on dozens of counts and sentenced to life in prison without parole. families and friends of the victims cried as the guilty verdicts were aloud in court. ahman alissa pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. he was diagnosed with schizophrenia after the

descended on the world jigsaw championships in spain over the weekend. the four-day event saw more than 3,500 people working together and individually. this year's individual title went to a competitor from norway who completed her 500-piece puzzle in 37 minutes. well, the end of an era for kmart, and california is suing exxonmobil over recycling in a first-of-its-kind lawsuit in the nation. here's shanelle kaul with today's "moneywatch." u.s. stocks closed in the green monday with investors looking to build on last week's post rate cut rally. the dow gained 61 points. the nasdaq was up 25 points. and the the s&p 500 gained 16 points. california's attorney general is suing exxonmobil. the suit alleges that exxon engaged in a decades-long deception about whether the plastics it manufactured can be recycled. an exxonmobil spokesperson responded in part by saying, quote, for decades california
