it's wednesday, september 25th, 2024. this is "cbs news mornings." bracing for impact. florida residents board up, pack up, and get out of dodge as helene closes in on the gulf coast. on the brink of all-out war. israel bombards hezbollah targets for another day, and the terror group returns fire.

and health battle. the shocking revelation from hall of fame quarterback brett favre. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we start with tropical storm helene gathering strength as it moves over the warm caribbean waters. florida's gulf coast is bracing for a direct hit. the storm is expected to become a hurricane today, and it could reach a powerful category three with winds peaking at 120 miles per hour and up to 15-foot storm surge by the time it makes landfall late tomorrow. florida's governor and president biden have already declared a state of emergency. mandatory evacuations are under way in low-lying counties. georgia's governor also declared a state of emergency. helene is expected to hit atlanta by early friday. cbs' jason allen is on florida's big bend with the preparations. >> reporter: all along florida's west coast people are fueling up. >> i got about three quarters of a tank now. we're trying to get it.

never know. >> reporter: and boarding up ahead of helene. here in the coastal town of east point business owners are taking no chances, shutting down days before the storm hits. mandatory evacuation orders are already in effect for some people living in coastal or low-lying areas. florida governor ron desantis is urging residents to prepare now. >> right now regardless of how it forms or the speed, right now you do have time. so take advantage of that time. >> reporter: inland in tallahassee city officials fear the storm could knock out power. when you see a storm track like this, how much does it concern you? >> it's very concerning. i'm from tallahassee, this is my hometown. we've never seen a storm of this mgnitude that could be a direct hit to tallahassee. >> reporter: with up to 15-foot storm surges predicted residents are also concerned. >> staying for the storm? >> this is different. we don't know which way it's going to go. all i know, i trust and believe

in god. >> reporter: simply moving back from the edge of the water on a storm like this doesn't help much because the land back in that direction is just flat. so with a storm this big, counties here are not opening shelters to encourage people to get further away from the water and out of the storm's path. jason allen, cbs news, wicola county, florida. now to the rising fear of an all-out war on israel's northern border. israeli fighter jets are pounding hezbollah targets in lebanon for a third straight day. air raid sirens sounded this morning in tel aviv where at least one missile was intercepted. the iran-backed terror group says that it targeted the headquarters in response to the pager attack. officials in lebanon say more than 560 people including a senior hezbollah commander have been killed. the conflict is dominating the annual u.n. general assembly. president biden called on nations to band together,

while iran's new president extended an unusual olive branch to its western adversaries all except for israel. jarred hill is joining us with the latest developments. it's all really concerning. good morning. >> there are so many pockets of concern in this region, and yesterday a senior hezbollah official said that only washington could stop the fighting there, which is fitting as you mentioned, seeing as president biden reflecting on his nearly 50 years on the world stage said that we are at an inflection point, but things can get better. missiles lit up the sky above the israel-lebanon border after israel launched dozens of new strikes targeting hezbollah. the iran-backed militant group has confirmed that a top commander was killed in a strike near beirut. lebanese health officials say in a matter of days more than 500 people have been killed including dozens of children. thousands of others have fled. "the situation is difficult and frightening," she says. israel says its iron dome intercepted hundreds of

hezbollah missiles as military officials there insist they want their operation to be as short as possible. in a recorded message, israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu told the lebanese people israel's fight is with hezbollah, not them. while warning that anyone who hides rockets in their garage will not have a home. back in the u.s., in his final speech before the united nations general assembly, president joe biden called for diplomacy. >> full-scale war is not in anyone's interest, even a situation that's escalated, a diplomatic solution is still possible. >> reporter: jordan's king abdullah called for the u.n. to create a protection mechanism for palestinians and sounded this warning -- >> i cannot recall a time of greater peril than this. >> reporter: last night crowds took to the streets of new york protesting the latest strikes. an emergency u.n. security council meeting has been called to discuss the situation later today. the leaders of israel, lebanon, and a representative from the

palestinian authority are set to speak at the u.n. general assembly later this week. today ukraine's president, volodymer zelenskyy, will deliver an address there, as well. he also is set to meet with president biden, vice president harris, and former president trump. anne-marie, covering all his bases ahead of the election. >> sounds like this. thank you very much. well, speaking of the election, 41 days until election day, and both candidates are focusing on a top issue for many americans -- the economy. vice president kamala harris will add details to her economic plans in pittsburgh today. former president donald trump will be in north carolina today, one day after presenting his economic agenda. a plan that is already drawing skepticism. cbs' robert costa reports. >> reporter: in battleground georgia, former president donald trump proposed tax breaks for companies that make products in the u.s. >> not only will we stop our businesses from leaving for foreign lands, but under my leadership we are going to take other countries' jobs. >> reporter: trump also said he

would impose a 100% tariff on cars coming from mexico. >> the only way they'll get rid of that tariff is if they want to build a plant right here in the united states with you people opeating that plant. >> reporter: but some economists and even members of his own party say tariffs could lead to higher inflation. >> i'm not a fan of tariffs. they raise prices for american consumers. >> reporter: it's trump's first visit to georgia since a conservative election board that he has praised approved a controversial rule requiring all precincts to hand count ballots in addition to a traditional machine count. that prompted criticism from officials in both parties, including georgia's republican secretary of state brad raffensperger. do you worry the board's playing politics? >> some of their rules would delay the process. we don't think that's healthy for our republic at any time. but particularly now when we are so highly polarized. >> reporter: vice president kamala harris has returned to a cornerstone of her campaign -- reproductive rights -- calling for a change to senate rules to reinstate protections under roe

v. wade. >> i think we should eliminate the filibuster for roe, 51 votes would be what we need to actually put back in law the protections for reproductive freedom. >> reporter: trump also addressed the issue of abortion and said he would protect women. >> women will be happy, healthy, confident, and free. federal prosecutors have charged ryan routh with attempting to assassinate donald trump in his florida golf course earlier this month. routh was indicted yesterday after the justice department found a note they say he wrote indicating his intentions to kill the former president. routh is already facing federal gun charges. coming up, a dangerous chemical leak near cincinnati. communities and schools are evacuated. and later, the battle over the high price of weight-loss drugs. big pharma is grilled on capitol hill.

and a dangerous chemical leak in ohio. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the cincinnati enquirer" reports a chemical leak forced evacuations in an ohio town. a pressure release valve on a rail car began leaking the toxic and flammable chemical styrene near cleeves, ohio, outside of cincinnati. people were told to leafed immediately. three school buildings were evacuated. officials were concerned about the possibility of an explosion. styrene is used to make plastic and rubber. "the st. louis post-dispatch" says a missouri man was executed for the 1998 murder of a woman after the u.s. supreme court rejected his marcellus williams was convicted of breaking into alicia gayle's st. louis home and stabbing her 43 times. williams has maintained his innocence. prosecutors and the victim's family wanted the sentence commuted to life in prison. "the new york times" says new york city schools chancellor

another woman has come forward accusing sean "diddy" combs of abuse. thalia graves filed the suit alleging the rap mogul and his head of security drugged and raped her in 2001 and recorded the assault on video. graves says she still suffers from flashbacks and nightmares. >> the internal pain after being sexually assaulted has been incredibly deep and hard to put into words. it goes beyond just physical harm caused by and during the assault. >> combs has not responded to the new lawsuit. he has pleaded not guilty to sex trafficking and racketeering charges. a startling revelation from nfl hall of fame quarterback brett favre. >> i've recently been diagnosed with parkinson's. this is also a cause dear to my heart. >> he made the disclosure that he's battling parkinson's while testifying before a congressional committee after a

mississippi welfare spending scandal. he's accused of using his connections to secure millions of dollars for himself and his alma mater, the university of southern mississippi, for speaking engagements he never performed. favre does not face criminal charges. he denies wrongdoing and has repaid more than $1 million to the state. it's not clear if his parkinson's is connected to the numerous concussions he suffered during his football career. elsewhere on capitol hill, the head of the company that makes the popular diabetes and weight-loss drugs ozempic and weygovy was grilled about the high cost of the medications in the u.s. a senate committee found the monthly price for ozempic in the u.s. is more than $900 compared to much cheaper prices in other countries, including $59 in germany. wegovy costs more than $1,300 in the u.s. compared to $92 in the uk. >> knowing that keeping the price of ozempic and wegovy so high in the united states could lead to the preventable deaths
