and these hikers could not believe their eyes when they read this message in a bottle. how a couple of bay area kids got their note on the way to australia. >> sunnyvale, california. whoa. >> from kpix this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. hi, i'm sara donchey. decades down only one to go. the a's may be done with oakland, but oakland fans showed tonight they are not done with the a's. it was packed for their game against the rangers at the coliseum and as you might expect people were quick to share their memories and thoughts . >> i've been coming here since i was 5 years old. my kids, too. i'm 54 years old, and this is really hard.

>> this has had a lot of challenges in trying to stay, the fans don't want to see at least, but i feel like it's been in the cards for a long time. >> the game itself was definitely disappointing. the a's lost 5-1, but they have another shot. stick around for a recap of that came later in the show. as you know the coliseum was home for the team for 57 years, and it's not just historic because what was going on on the field, the wave was actually invented there in 1981 all things to a fan we know as "crazy george." ryan yamamoto caught up with the professional cheerleader and has his story tonight . >> reporter: from working the crowd to walking the concourse at paypal park , george henderson, a.k.a. george," is a bit of a celebrity. >> can we get a picture? >> reporter: even at 80 years old he still loves his job as a professional cheerleader. >> this is the best part of the game for me. i love making people smile . >> crazy george! >> it's a job that began decades ago. >> i've been doing it for 57 years. >> reporter: and his hometown of capitola we had a chance to reminisce on his career, a career when krazy george became part of the fabric of bay area sports armed with a drum, his crazy hair and cut off jeans cheering for the local teams including the oakland athletics. >> the oakland a's started about 1978. turned professional in 1975. '78 they hired me,

and it was just great from there. >> reporter: and greatness would come october 15, 1981, during the american league championship series between the a's and the yankees at the oakland coliseum. that's when krazy george invented "the wave." >> it went about 11 sections and died the first time, it got behind home plate, this was good, so i started it a second time, it went all the way around, and it went almost two thirds the way around . it was going great. that's when it's died again. >> reporter: a fourth attempt proved successful. >> it's amazing, i've never seen anything like this. >> i started it , it was louder, it's crazy, it's like a locomotive coming right

through the section and there it went. about six or eight times around the stadium it went, and it was on video. so i think that is the day i debuted "the wave" to the world. >> a worldwide cheer making krazy george a worldwide sports icon. >> every country is doing the wave and it started from the gentleman right there, a legend. >> reporter: a legend who calls the a's farewell from the bay area bittersweet. >> it's so sad for oakland and the oakland a's fans. there are fans all over the bay area that love the a's. i love the a's. >> reporter: but as the a's say goodbye the legacy of krazy george will live on now celebrating his 50th year cheering for the quakes. >> that man does not slow down,

the security guys and women wear. >> you can hear the upright as he talks about all the work he's done over the years with the oakland athletics. >> i would walk past and say hi. we made your hat we made your jacket. >> reporter: howard couldn't believe almost 30 years ago when the a's approached him to make some uniform shirts for support staff. >> it was dumb luck. the guy could not get the job fast enough. we were in a jam could you help us? i said yes i could help to come because we love the a's. and from now we just built it up over the years. >> reporter: howard and alliance graphics took over the contract making staff uniforms for ticket takers, guest services, even the broadcast team, and the list goes on. the team can't became a significant part of the shop's business. >> they would get an some jack

et or sweater. and now it is all going away. >> reporter: the team has not told them directly, but he says he's 90% sure the a's will find a local vendor in sacramento to take over the work which also means's clothing vendor in fresno will be losing business as well read >> can't just rip out something as important to the community as the a's and expect they're not to be fallout . >> i have been a big a's fan. the a's want me to work for them, it couldn't have been better. so now in addition to a business partner my heart is breaking like so many of the fans , that we are losing

something so important. >> howard and his sons treasured their nights at the ball field. and while everyone else in the stadium's focus on the players howard is more concerned with the staff. >> i would go out there, i would take photographs of people wearing our stuff going because it was so much fun. i would say look we made that. >> reporter: all those uniforms now just a box of files of every design the shop has ever made for the team. a part of a's history howard still can't bring himself to throw away. >> we will hang on to it for while. we don't throw anything out read >> back when they were doing fan fests when they stopped caring about the fans-- >> lots of memories tied up in that stadium. we've asked people to share their memories with us of the a's at the coliseum that includes bay area native tom hanks who grew up

going to a's games. he says he might shed a tear when they leave even though he same as for his line there's no crying in baseball, from the movie, a league of their own. julie goodrich got a chance to talk with tom hanks about his memories as an a's fan. >> it was a world-renowned place were so much was going to be happening, and i happened to live in the slightly elevated part of the city, and i could see the lights of the oakland coliseum whenever there was an event down there, which was a big deal. >> tom hanks' very first job was selling hotdogs and peanuts at the coliseum. the team shared pictures of him during covid. you can watch juliet's full interview tomorrow at 6:00. photoshop pictures of him. still ahead a man hijacks a bus in a violent rampage. how the driver's quick thinking get the bed situation from getting a whole lot worse. and northbay man is heartbroken and confused after a strange theft was caught on

last night was a real live nightmare. >> the gunman shot and killed one passenger then ordered the driver to take off even telling him to go on the wrong side of the road. the driver kept his cool though and pressed at the emergency alert button. cops chased the bus for over an hour before they were able to hit it with spike strips and disable it. officers arrested a 51-year-old suspect who was since charged with murder. right now hurricane helene is barreling towards florida's gulf coast. this is how it looked when it hit cancun, mexico, this morning, as a tropical storm. but , the storm is rapidly intensifying in could hit florida in a matter of hours and could bring catastrophic storm surge. darren peck has been tracking this . >> it's going to be a big storm . look

we captured that image and you can see we got this just before sunset, this is high resolution satellite imagery. you can see the turn from night to day so we captured that image before the sun went down. you look at the size of the storm setting off the coast. this will be a big story tomorrow. we will have much more on it throughout tomorrow. let's get you to the other side of the northern hemisphere and get a closer look at us. when you look out at california let's swing around over to this side. when we look out into the pacific our story is a very different one. what we are seeing out here looks different than we've seen, it's been months. that is a big pool of cold air sitting in the gulf of alaska. you can see the spotted clouds there. that is a telltale sign it is developing isolated storms. let's not look at just the clouds, let's look at the

temperature profile in the atmosphere. you see the big pool of cold air. what we do over the course of the next five days is this up and down in temperatures. and you'll see why. that cold air will keep trying , and the warmth will win out , the cold will win out, and you can see where this ends by the time we get to tuesday next week. that's a big bubble of very warm air that is winning. i will remove this so you can see him and let's come back out to the wide view. it will warm up pretty noticeably by the time we get to early next week. let's go in order. we'll start out by taking a look at how things will play out tomorrow. watch the marine layer building overnight, and it's going to do that magic thing where it conforms perfectly to the interior of the bay. so if you're in the bay and terry all you will wake

up and it's great. you can see the warm-up that would take place, watch the clouds arrived tomorrow. i that's where they are sitting. this gives us about a 10 degree warm up from where we were today. one way to visualize this is take a look at the temperature profile across northern california. tomorrow i can put the daytime highs on here. the numbers inland, 70s today. he will be in the mid-80s tomorrow. let's take a look at this in a slightly different way. what's the fog going to do as we head into friday? nothing. it does not build back in good when you wake up on friday morning that's what you are going to have. there is forecast imagery, but the clouds don't build back in. on friday remember how orange the map was? what happens when we cover the map looking at friday's numbers. look where you will be, friday. he will be shy of 100, and early next week that's what we are looking at that showed us that's really

when the much warmer air will get here. we will probably have to go back 100 degrees for our hottest inland valleys. right now we are holding off. if you look at the inlet forecast we jump back up your monday and tuesday. we are getting close to 100. but it's still several days out. we are hopeful we may not have to go there, but at this point the tuesday warm-up looks like it's going to be more significant than the one on friday. and it will probably be close to what we were doing earlier this week monday and tuesday this week. it's kind of funny. you get caught in seven day patterns like that. this coming monday and tuesday it could almost be an exact repeat >> nothing like virtual weather to give us true perspective on what's ahead. thank you so much for showing us that. the man is hoping surveillance will solve a mystery that's left him upset, and she is getting help from the man known as the mayor of

flavortown. >> reporter: nacho, atlas, and chile are missing, and he hopes someone will bring them back home. sean has a strong bond with all of his goats. to him they are like family. so when he came home last week to see three of his goats were missing he was heartbroken. >> it's really hard, every morning i leave and go to work. and i hope it's not the last time i get to see them. >> reporter: one of the goats that was stolen was natural. >> i bottle raised him . he is really big, he's probably over 150, 160 pounds, and he is very vocal. >> hi, nacho, how are you doing, buddy? that's my big

message in a bottle stories are interesting , and we have one tonight written by a couple bay area kids that ended up all the way in australia. >> so please write back to me when hundred sunnyvale, california. wow. >> there was a little bit of a catch. a group of hikers in australia found a bottle with that message inside that said it was from california. turns out the journey wasn't quite as long as it seemed. the group found a bottle when they were cleaning up trash near the bay

earlier this week in australia. the letter inside was written by three girls from sunnyvale tainted dated 2016. they were on vacation in fiji, but this was still quite the journey. it traveled almost 2 dozen miles to queens in. the letter asked whoever found it to write them back. they found out the home was sold two years after the letter was written, so they turned to social media. >> apparently someone had gotten in contact with the resort in fiji , and then they messaged janice , and all three girls had just been back at the resort only a few months ago in august, and yeah. which is so very bizarre. >> take me to the next fiji trip. >> apparently they go quite often. >> with the attention of local tv and radio stations they got
