>> these charges will be entirely false, based on lies. >> indicted. new york city's mayor facing federal charges. the investigations, the resignations, and the scandals that have plagued his adminis administrations. here comes helene. the hurricane powering up and taking aim at florida's gulf coast. the storm is expected to bring life-threatening storm surge, damaging winds, and flooding to much of the southeast. and calls for a cease-fire grow louder as israel prepares for a possible ground invasion in lebanon in their battle against hezbollah. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we start with the breaking news on the mayor of america's largest city. new york city mayor eric adams is under federal indictment, making him the first mayor in new york city's history to be charged while in office. the indictment is sealed, and
3:32 am
the charges are unknown. but mayor adams is vowing to fight to clear his name. jarred hill is joining us with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. federal prosecutors are expected to give more details on this case against new york city's mayor later today, but we do know he's been under investigation for almost a year. last november agents seized his phone and searched the home of his top fundraiser. sources say that was part of a probe into whether new york mayor eric adams conspired with foreign governments, turkey, to illegally funnel donations into his 2021 campaign. this is one of a number of investigations into either adams or folks in his inner circle. in fact, three high-ranking employees resigned in just the past few weeks. adams, who is a former new york city cop before he was a politician and elected mayor, put out a video last night bashing this investigation and addressed calls for him to step down. >> if so, these charges will be
3:33 am
entirely false based on lies. but i have been facing these lies for months, since i began to speak out for all of you and the investigation started. yet the city has continued to improve. make no mistake, you elected me to lead this city, and lead it i will. >> reporter: again obviously adams is defiant here. even before the indictment, though, a number of other democrats have been calling on him to resign including u.s. congresswoman alexandria ocasio-cortez. new york's governor does have the power to remove him from office, anne-marie, but she hasn't given any indication, at least not at this point, that she would actually do so. >> we'll see how things develop throughout the day. jarred hill in new york. thank you. now to our other big story -- hurricane helene threatening to slam florida's gulf coast as a catastrophic category-four storm. 80 million americans across florida and the southeast are bracing for impact.
3:34 am
heavy rain and powerful winds are already battering marco island, and the storm will continue to intensify as it moves north. here's a view from inside the eye of helene. one of the hurricane hunters at the national oceanic and atmospheric administration shot this video earlier in the day. we have team coverage for you, though. nicole valdes is in tampa, florida. but let us start with our senior weather producer david parkinson tracking this storm. how is it looking? >> unfortunately it's not looking good for folks in florida. you're starting to see the eye forming more clearly, and now rapid intensification set to take place as it becomes a category-four storm just before landfall. we think the wind's 130 miles per hour in the big bend region. then the storm moves inland, but it's moving really quickly. by the time you get to 7:00 a.m. friday, the winds are still at 60 miles per hour, and then it begins to dissipate. there's a lot of impacts between now and then. first 10 to 20 feet of storm surge, that's two stories up on
3:35 am
a house, unsurvivable storm surge up along the big bend of florida. and then even five to eight feet in tampa bay where nicole is. then 100 to 120 mile-per-hour winds at the coast up to tallahassee. 80 to 100 mile-per-hour winds inland as far north as albany. then 250 miles from the landfall spot in atlanta, 60 to 80 mile-per-hour winds. the winds is gargantuan. you add 12 to 20 inches in upstate north carolina, western north carolina, nine to 12 inches of rain in the atlanta metro, that's going to be really problematic for the morning commute. and six to nine inches in other spots. plus you've got heavy rain at the coast. this is a huge storm. you've got maybe six hours before it's too late to evacuate. so please, if you have not yet done so and you are in a mandatory evacuation area, you have to do it. this storm will kill people if they don't get out of the way. >> that is a dire and good warning, david. thank you very much. mandatory evacuations have
3:36 am
been ordered in some areas with many residents packing up and moving out. cbs' nicole valdes is joining us now from tampa. good morning, nicole. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. i know he just mentioned we are still just a few hours away from that landfall. however, we're already feeling strong wind gusts here in downtown tampa. a sign truly of what's to come. of course of the main concerns here it remains that storm surge as really the top conversation. we are talking five to eight feet of possible storm surge in tampa, and really the surrounding tampa bay area. however, that is a record for this area. we of course know that further north along florida's big bend maybe 10, 15, somewhere even 20 feet of storm surge possible with this storm. it's why we've seen so much action really from people all
3:37 am
across florida's gulf coast preparing their homes, evacuating, here in hillsborough county and pinellas, we know evacuation orders have been put in place, especially for those lower lying communities and for those who really need help to move out of their homes here. and you mentioned again travel, it is not something that people should be doing. in fact, tampa international airport has already shut down operations for the day knowing what is to come. they don't want to take any chances. i think it's clear now that as we start to see these impacts worsen throughout the morning and into the afternoon, the clock is ticking. >> all right. you stay safe in tampa. thank you so much. turning to several developments in the middle east. israel's military chief says they are preparing for a possible ground invasion in lebanon, and it comes as the u.s., france, and allies are calling for a 21-day cease-fire between israel and hezbollah. in a joint statement, negotiated

3:39 am
more wounded here according to lebanese health officials including this woman. "we are strong," she says. "no matter what israel does, we will remain strong." according to the u.n., more than 90,000 people have fled israel's strikes as hezbollah continues to fire back. this ballistic missile aimed at tel aviv was intercepted, but israel's leaders say their campaign won't end until residents displaced from rocket fire can go home. while hezbollah says it won't stop targeting israel until there's a cease-fire in gaza. >> the idea of going into lebanon on the ground is pretty tricky for them because hezbollah's preparing for that, and it's what they really want to happen because they feel they can humiliate the israelis. even though it will come at a price. >> reporter: imtiaz tyab, cbs news, beirut. ukrainian president volodymer zelenskyy will be in
