breaking overnight -- hurricane helene makes landfall. the monster storm slams ashore as a powerful category four. >> it's very dangerous conditions. you need to be hunkering down. >> the storm bringing catastrophic storm summer, dangerous winds, and buckets of rain, and it's not over yet. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. million h businesses are without power in florida, and more than 500,000 in georgia. the governors of florida,

georgia, alabama, and the carolinas, as well as virginia, all declared emergencies in their states. we have team coverage, and we're going to start with nicole valdes who's in tampa, florida. what is the situation like there now? >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. it's still windy here in downtown tampa. and behind me evidence of that storm surge threat we were warning you about just yesterday. you can look here. this is the tampa river walk. you'll notice it's under water. there is a lot of real estate behind me. in fact, a big construction zone that you can see is now under several inches of water at the very least. unfortunately local police officers telling us at least for this area it may be some of the worst flooding they've seen in quite some time. hurricane helene definitely making its mark along much of florida's gulf coast. we know there are reports of a lot of homes that are dealing with flooding this morning, and others needing to be rescued. the wind howling in tampa, and

the roads heavily flooded in naples. and lee county. hours before helene made landfall in the big bend area of florida's gulf coast, governor ron desantis said one person was killed when a sign fell on their car on a tampa highway. >> it's very dangerous conditions out there. you need to be right now just hunkering down. now is not the time to be going out. >> reporter: these college students from st. petersburg were among the many who evacuated to escape helene's wrath. they drove 3.5 hours to fort pierce. >> it's still stormy, but i can't imagine what it's like closer to the storm. i feel a lot safer being away from it. >> reporter: some who live in tallahassee made the decision to move to a shelter. >> it's scary. i prayed up. i just hope everybody gets through it together. >> reporter: millions are expected to lose electricity. power lines fell as far east as

port st. lucie. >> it was scary. i'm not going to lie. especially when i seen that and i seen the cables right over me. i was like, yeah, that's not good. >> reporter: the storm so immense it already toppled trees in atlanta, and heavy rains opened this sinkhole north of the city. this is what helene looked like from space as it beared down on the southeast. and millions still without power this morning. meanwhile, across tampa bay, a lot of the bridges that connect certain areas, st. petersburg, for example, are still closed this morning. that will stay that way until the winds die down enough. floo

eric adams, a democrat, is expected to face a judge today where he says he will fight the charges against him. federal prosecutors accuse adams of a decade-long trail of corruption and bribery that began when he served as a brooklyn elected official. cbs' nikki battiste reports. the foreign money, the corporate money, the bribery, the years of concealment is a grave breach of the public's trust. >> reporter: united states attorney damian williams says new york city mayor eric adams' alleged bribery scheme involving at least one government official and several business its men in turkey began nearly a decade ago. >> the mayor sought and accepted over $100,000 in luxury travel benefits. he told the public he received no gifts even though he was secretly being showered with them. >> reporter: prosecutors say adams used straw donors or third parties to accept illegal foreign campaign donation. these contributions led to $10 million in public matching funds to his campaign.

they also allege in september, 2021 could a turkish official told adams it was his turn to repay them, asking adams to pressure the new york fire department to allow a recently built turkish skyscraper in manhattan to open without being inspected. what stuck out to you about the indictment? >> the gravity of the charges, the complexity of the scheme, and the efforts that went right up until recently to conceal the alleged crimes. >> reporter: adams is charged with five counts of bribery, fraud, and soliciting illegal foreign campaign donations. >> this is an unfortunate day, and it's a painful day. >> reporter: if convicted he could face up to 45 years in prison. adams maintains his innocence. >> i ask new yorkers to wait to hear our defense before making any judgments. >> reporter: new york's democratic governor is the only person with the power to remove adams from office. a spokesperson told us the governor is monitoring the situation. when mayor adams spoke outside

his official residence here, the crowd around him started chanting "resign, resign." nikki battiste, cbs news, new york. as israel and hezbollah keep up their cross-border attacks, prime minister benjamin netanyahu is in new york to address the united nations general assembly today. the prime minister vowed to fight with full force. after arriving yesterday appearing to reject a 21-day cease-fire proposal. later his office said his team met to discuss the proposal and talks would continue in the inning days. hezbollah has not responded to the offer. meanwhile, israel's military says it intercepted a missile fired from yemen this morning that set off air raid sirens across the center of the country including tel aviv. one of israel's latest strikes killed a senior hezbollah commander in beirut. the terror group launched dozens of rockets into israel. most were intercepted. one hit a house. ukraine's president volodymer zelenskyy is set to meet with former president

donald trump today, one day after meeting with vice president kamala harris. zelenskyy is trying to shore up u.s. support for his fight against russia. as cbs' weijia jiang reports, he finds himself right in the middle of the presidential campaign. >> reporter: two presidential nominees, two starkly different approaches to handling the ukraine war. >> my support for the people of ukraine is unwavering. >> ukraine is gone. it's not ukraine anymore. >> reporter: former president trump this week criticized the ukrainians for not cutting a deal with russian president vladimir putin to end the war. vice president harris met with president zelenskyy and said the focus should be on stopping putin. >> if we allow aggressors like putin to take land with impunity, they keep going. >> reporter: the administration announced more security assistance to ukraine and promised zelenskyy additional funds before the end of

president biden's term, easing concerns that trump could cut the money off if he wins. >> we have to keep pressure on russia to stop the war and to make truly lasting and just peace. >> reporter: trump said he will meet with zelenskyy -- >> i will be meeting with him. >> reporter: -- but it could be tense given the comments zelenskyy made in the latest "new yorker" magazine saying, "my feeling is that trump doesn't really know how to stop the war even if he might think he knows how." >> i disagree, but i will say this -- i believe i will be able to make a deal between president putin and president zelenskyy quite quickly. >> this is how we receive -- >> reporter: republicans are also fuming over zelenskyy's visit to an arms factory in battleground pennsylvania on sunday. accompanied only by democrats. >> we're in the middle of a hotly contested national election, and we don't need foreign countries intervening. >> reporter: zelenskyy's priority here at the white house wa to get permission to use

"the washington post" reports federal safety investigators are calling for urgent action on boeing 737 rudder systems that are used to steer planes. the national transportation safety board issued recommendations yesterday to address potential problems on certain 737 max and ng jets. it comes after an investigation of an incident earlier this year when rudder pedals on a united airlines plane became stuck during a landing. boeing says that it's reviewing the red wing mentions. -- recommendations. cnn says for the second time this year alabama executed an inmate using a controversial method involving nitrogen gas. alan miller was put to death last night for the workplace murders of three men in 1999.

alabama tried to execute miller by lethal injection in 2022, but it was called off when they could not access his veins. opponent say the use of nitrogen gas violates constitutional protections against cruel and unusual punishment. miller is the fifth inmate to be executed in the u.s. in the span of one week. and "politico" says a new york appeals court panel appeared receptive to possibly overturning or reducing the nearly $500 million civil fraud judgment against donald trump. earlier this year a judge found that trump and others committed fraud by inflating the value of trump's real estate assets to obtain more favorable loan and insurance rates. trump, who did not attend the hearing, wants the judgment thrown out. the panel did not issue a decision yesterday. ahead, what happened to the kitten that crossed the road? the unexpected turn for a wayward cat. ♪ ♪ have you always had trouble losing weight
