people reaching for the ear plugs all across across the bay. what's being done to keep windows from shaking when portola festival comes to town. a biggest radio station is yanking a bay area band off the air waves for their comments after the a's ditched oakland. hello, i'm sara donchey. it is friday night. as we know, san francisco is a busy city. we have all the things cities have with the traffic, the skyscrapers, people walking on busy walks. if you live here, you also know we have coyotes. you can spot them downtown some nights. this video was taken outside our station, but they come out during the day too. very often, and of course, there is popping season. bernal

heights has been a huge hot spot. it's not unusual. tonight, there is a warning for dog owners who visit the presidio. >> what? hey, man, you took my clubs last time. what, are you testing me? >> reporter: park workers have gotten reports of coyotes. and andrea nakano talked to dog owners there tonight. >> reporter: this is one of the signs at the chrissy beach dog owner. asking them to make sure their pets are leashed. many are letting their dogs roam free, keeping an extra close eye on their pups. >> reporter: as he comes down to the beach with his dogs,

three to four times a week. he's heard of the coyote attacks with a close encounter himself. >> i was walking this guy here and the other one, nigel. here it is. it is the one thing. that's the idea that you cannot do anymore. >> reporter: he spotted a coyote nearby, tracking a dog for several years. he immediately called on his dog to come to him and score it away. >> and they are sort of a snack for coyotes. be more careful. >> reporter: they believe one or more coyotes in the area had become used to offleash dogs, becoming more aggressive towards them. this dog has done her part to shoe the coyotes away. her owner didn't want to

be on camera, but said lady is the official coyote patrol dog at crissy field. >> she'll smell them. but she won't leave or move. >> reporter: this is video of lady confronting a coyote behind a tree. warning dog owners to be extra careful during the morning and night to keep your dogs safe. and he says vigilance is the key to coexisting with the animals. >> it's not necessarily a bad thing. us having to learn and to live with them. just being more, you know, aware of the danger because they are dangerous. >> according to the urban research project, if you're approached by the coyote, you can yell. you should not panic

or run away. stabbing a 16-year-old boy at a south san francisco zoo. our chopper flew out earlier this afternoon. police say the victim was taken to the hospital, but will survive. they are asking anyone on campus to share video of the incident, if they have it. tonight in oakland, a heartbroken family is mourning the death of the man working to provide a brighter future for himself and the community he called home. da lin has that story. >> reporter: his family identified billy williams as the man killed on thursday in the diamond district. he started working two months ago. >> he was responsible. he was on time. he just said he needed a chance that he couldn't get anywhere else. people would turn him down because of

cleaning up homeless encampments and the streets. >> i was down and out, down on my luck. i didn't have a job, employment, and i was in the streets hustling. i could count on him as he put me in a position to where i am now. got a job, nice clothes. >> it's hard to meet someone and know they would show up. then to be murdered like an animal down the street. >> reporter: police say the shooting happened just after 5:00 p.m. on thursday. someone fired multiple rounds, hitting a car, killing billy. police say billy was with or near a group of people. investigators are still looking for a motive, and no one has been arrested. neighbors heard about six to eight shots. >> when they hear the gunshots, we're not running anywhere. people are tired of it. >> reporter: police say homicides are down compared to

the same time period last year. 69 homicide compared to 96 last year. operation cease-fire is one of the reasons for the decline. >> members of our department of violence prevention and our community based organizations that we work with throughout city that are giving the message to those that would likely be involved in violent crime as a victim or suspect. and asking them to put that down, just in that short time we have reinstated the program. >> and once even more job opportunities for those at risk like billy. he said billy lost his son to gun violence in oakland last year. and his 19-year-old daughter is now fighting cancer. >> this is a person that i have

hugged or touched. i cried when i heard what happened. most of the individuals who do it, they don't know what they're doing. hurricane helene has left a path of destruction across florida and the southwestern united states. the storm has already killed dozens of people. rescuers have been trying to save people trapped in floodwaters. patients in kentucky for forced to evacuate to the roof. ivan rodriguez is in keaton beach, florida, where much of the town was leveled. >> reporter: 24 hours ago, communities like this one in florida's big bend will begin to feel impacts of hurricane helene. now we're standing here in this field of debris. to my left, it used to be a gas station. to my right, a market. and this used to also be a neighborhood where only one home, we could tell, is still standing. the recovery process

here will be very long. and her home, all the neighbors homes, gone. >> there was one, two, three, four, five, six homes just gone. >> man, i just lost my house. i have nothing else to go. >> reporter: aaron's husband says like so many others, they were not expecting helene to pack such a powerful punch. >> reporter: helene devastated entire structures, toppled trees, and crushed vehicles. a deluge so overwhelming on friday. in tennessee, 54 people were stranded on the hospital roof awaiting rescue. in north carolina where helene claimed at least two lives. the governor said helene is one of the worst storms in history. >> reporter: causing entire

homes to float away. leaving millions without power. but with the death toll, 2 is something not to be taken for granted. >> at the end of the day, nobody would have made it through this. back here in the bay area, it has been nine months since the suicide prevention nets were completed under the golden gate bridge. and we wanted to know if they have been working to save lives and dee material deter lives. kevin ko has the story. >> reporter: patrol officer nicholas serrano is keeping guard on the golden gate bridge, as he has done for the past ten years. >> just try to engage. >> reporter: officer serrano is

looking for someone that you might not see. someone looking to contempt suicide. >> there's a heightened awareness of who is out here and what's happening. you start to look for more and more people that may need to be contacted. >> reporter: in contrast, officer serrano has seen fewer and fewer people who need help. these nets are covering all 1.7 miles of one of the most famous bridges in the world. the bridge is monitored in person and through surveillance. so if they help give a moment of time for answers. >> i don't have the statistics in front of me, but there's less coming out overall. >> reporter: david rivera says the data shows the nets are working. >> where she seen the net making a positive impact on deterring people from coming out. last year we had 14

suicides. >> reporter: the nets were still under construction last year. only partially complete. but it decreased suicides by more than 50%. >> for me, looking at that bridge today, doesn't bring up any pain or any strife or struggle. it makes me think how far i've come from under the golden gate bridge. there's a beauty under that feeling and that i get to be here every day. >> reporter: he was a vocal supporter for the determined nets, he says he still struggles with bipolar depression today. >> and my suicidal thoughts didn't stop. that was just the beginning. ten psych ward stays since then, but i never

attempted again because i recognized my true value. >> reporter: that is when officer serrano helps people realize he has come face to face with hundreds of people in crisis at the bridge. some he saved, some he couldn't in the past decade. you're there for them, trying to make sure they're okay. we want to know we've exhausted all of our resources to try to get that person help. >> installing the net, different things that are positive changes to show there is piece. to make sure anyone they know, every life is one worth living. >> september is suicide prevention month. if you or anyone you know is struggling, call or text the hotline at 988. still ahead, the transamerica building barely reopened after a multi-million dollar remodel. so why was

>live. look now at the a live look a■t ransamerica building. city leaders came out far big celebration for it. just two weeks after the ribbon cutting, there was kind of a problem. shards of glass fell from the skyscraper, slamming into the ground yesterday. you can imagine something like that could be deadly if someone was in the wrong place at the wrong time. the glass landed near montgomery street. thankfully maybe miraculously, nobody got hurt. >> we're doing maintenance on the building. >> and build inspectors say the glass pane broke while being cleaned last night, and pieces fell onto the sidewalk. something similar happened earlier this month just a few blocks away. full pane of glass fell from the salesforce east building. and also intense winds blew a couple of windows

out on downtown high-rises. some people who live on the island say their windows will shake every year when that festival comes to town in san francisco. performances told the music festival it sounded like this last year. ♪ [ music ] ♪ >> so the sound from the show actually traveled all the way across the bay, which happened two years in a row according to neighbors in alameda. now porcano pour . >> reporter: the music festival is back, 30,000 to 40,000 fans, expected to descend in the mid-80s. while they'll be dancing, cheering, people

across the bay in alameda have a different message. >> i'd say tone it down. >> reporter: diana wineman worked as a real estate agent in alameda. while she lives in central wineman and sunt hear the number. it's really conducting the sound. >> reporter: the powerful bass frequencies travel across the water. the san francisco entertainment commission received reports of windows ratherring in alameda, and more than 200 job noise complaints. pat marshall lives just four blocks from the water. she heard the festival last year. >> i literally thought it was two blocks away. >> reporter: she didn't realize until the next day it was happening in san francisco. >> it is one thing if i could be there to enjoy it live. but it was just disturbing. >> reporter: so disturbing that the city of alameda posted this on their facebook page on october 4 of last year.

formally requesting that the event be disconnected or moving to an alternate venue. they do not think it should end. >> i hate to debereave somebody else their entertainment. >> i'm not saying cancel. i like better solutions than that. >> reporter: the city in contact with organizers who have made changes to mitt game the impact. include lowering the bass level. adjusting the stage orientation, and placing two stationary sound monitors in alameda. when it reaches a certain level, it'll be reported to determine next steps. despite all the noise, she doesn't think it will have a long-term affect on the city. >> it's quiet living here most of the time, and it's safe. >> the festival starts at 1:00 p.m. on saturday and sunday. the city of alameda says organizers have agreed to wrap up the outdoor shows at 10:45 p.m. on sunday night. now, pro

tip, there's a lot of concrete and asphalt out at portola. is it going to be hot? >> it'll be better over the weekend. so what makes this forecast so tricky, we had a big warm up today. going into the weekend, everybody is geared for it to stay like that, but it's not. then the real warm up will happen early next week. so we will talk about weekend, you bet, in a lot of detail here. but the first thing i want to do is go straight to the headline of this forecast. the weekend is not it. early next week is. so we have been visualizing temperatures across the bay this week on the virtual map. it's one thing to have the visual of deep reds and that it must be hot. let's put some numbers on there to gain that perspective. this is where that point gets driven home. these are tuesday's numbers. i know we're going kind of far out, but i wanted you to see this first and have this impression

left in your mind after you enjoy the weekend. maybe even more for the first two days of next week. monday is going to be close. it's going to be funny like that. we'll start out the week. right away on monday, the temperatures will jump again. then they will peak here on tuesday. at this point, this is the high range of the forecast possibility. we are still a time to adjust these numbers quite a bit. here is a good example. when we get to the seven day, i've got 97 there. there is a possibility of rain just here. only a 3-degree difference. one forecast model here, especially the one using the high-resolution output wants to nudge you to 100. we are going with 97 in your seven-day forecast. does 3 degrees make a difference? not really. but there is a big difference in the psychology, i think, over the 100-degree day or upper 90s, especially when you should be in the low 80s. just a quick

example of how we're doing this, then we'll get to your seven-day forecast. we'll remove the numbers from where we are on tuesday. i just want you to see what the wind is going to be doing. we have not seen this yet using the virtual set. what where she here is a really of course offshore wind scenario. we haven't seen this yet. it's a lot of momentum for the wind doing exactly what the title tells you. they are going offshore. those are the situations where the temperatures will tend to go up the most. as we go further in october, this is the situation we'll watch closely out of concern, some messaging coming out of the national service, the concerns for some of the higher elevation ridge tops back here. here is good news. doesn't last that long. this weekend, we didn't spend a lot of time there, but your weekend is just fine. weekend is
