saturday night. it's not exactly news that sea levels are rising, but the fact is hitting home on the richmond shoreline in a unique way. john ramos has got that story. >> reporter: most of the concern over sea level rise focuses on the flooding of homes and businesses, but in richmond, they have one more thing to worry about, that which may be silently waiting buried underground. during world war ii, richmond gained its reputation as a can do industrial city as it cranked out ships for the war effort. but over the years when companies produced toxic waste, they simply dug a hole and buried it. >> there are contaminate sites along the shoreline that we need to also be concerned about. about how will sea level rise affect contamination along our industrial shoreline here in richmond and contra costa. that's a big issue. >> reporter: at a community meeting, city and county leaders began discussions on a state-mandated regional
11:15 pm
shoreline adaptation plan to deal with sea level rise. it's something every waterfront city must do in the coming years, but councilmember gail mclaughlin says richmond faces special challenges. >> we do have some of our shoreline now that is just left vacant but underneath the surface is a lot of toxins. >> reporter: that's a problem because projections from the national oceanic and atmospheric administration show that as the sea rises, more and more industrial areas could be affected. one of those sites is the former chemical plant. it's been fenced off for years with a plan to cover the highly toxic soil with a concrete cap and locate 4,000 homes on top. but critics say that will do nothing to stop the effects of sea level rise. >> it will cause the ground water to make contact with the toxins, and that mobilizes them further off site and into the bay. so we're really concerned
11:16 pm
about how not only that site but there are dozens of sites that have toxic leftovers and very serious ones. >> reporter: so what can be done? scientists say it's time to take a cue from nature. there are proposals underway to reestablish the tidal marshes that once lined the bay. the grasses act like shock absorbers against storm surges and as the sea rises bring in sediments, the level of the marshes rise naturally to the level of the water. katie mcknight, an environmental scientist with the sf estuary institute, says it's a much more resilient strategy than simply dropping more and more layers of rock along the bay. >> i think people are most familiar with gray infrastructure. and that typically is hardened infrastructure. things like concrete and steel and rock. over time we've learned that, you know, using nature can actually be really, really helpful, because nature is much more adaptable to change and shocks to the system. >> reporter: this is only the beginning. there are still years of

planning to come. but richmond has a special reason to begin the process as soon as possible as it faces the consequences of burying the sins of its past. >> well, at least they can kind of tackle -- at least think about tackling the rising sea level problem. but the rising temperature problem, there is no escape. >> no way around that. it's going to come on so fast. >> yeah. >> the thing about it is, we've got another gorgeous second half of the weekend. >> yeah. >> and then if you know someone who maybe hasn't been paying attention, let them know it's going to be drastically different around here by the time we get to monday, tuesday, and wednesday. we're going to go in order. since you do still have -- i already showed you the headline in the last visit. and we're going to go over that again, so i'll show you the intensity of the heat coming our way. but first, sunday. so the marine layer is building back in overnight. and tomorrow morning when we wake up it will have filled in a good part of the bay. this is about 7:00 a.m. that's a good sign if you want things relatively cool. and
11:18 pm
then the clouds will melt back and go to the coast, where they will stay. fog fest happening in pacifica this weekend. they certainly had their share of fog today, and they're going to have their share of fog tomorrow. if we take a look at the numbers on here, and we'll take that line -- it's a really great way to see microclimates across the bay. come here to pacifica and read that number. temperatures in pacifica are going to be classic when you have the marine layer hanging out you're not getting to the low to mid-60s. you're in the upper 80s. not bad. that's average. this is where the numbers should be for this time of year. and just to make sure that we get everybody in here, let's use the map now to get everybody else on. weal clear out the clouds. we'll say good -bye to the fog for now. a nice look at the north bay. we'll show everybody off here. we gt a little bit of an onshore breeze going on right now.
11:19 pm
that's what's helping us out. you can see that when we look at the streamlines out here. this is the weekend setup. this is why things have been so nice and relatively cool. we're going to transition with one click of the button from why the weekend is this way to why monday, tuesday, and wednesday are going to be so much warmer and part of that story. and a big part of that story the the fact that the dreshgs of the winds is going to change. not a particularly overintense offshore wind event. we're not really overly concerned about fire weather here, but look at that. clearly you've got a different wind direction here. that's usually what helps to warm things up in a dramatic way. speaking of which, here comes the drama. shades of deep red. we look at the numbers coming our way for monday just to kind of -- if we looked at everybody's numbers in the last visit, this is the overview for the representative spots of microclimates across the bay.
11:20 pm
the inland microclimate first. you've got an issue. 106 on this. the hotter climates. this could potentially be the number for places like livermore, concord. there's room here for the numbers to modulate a little higher. so stay on top of this forecast. either way, totally different feel. and we're going to get a little more specific than just generically labeling the bay. let's give you the two extremes for the bay. santa clara valley will be the warm part of it. and this is the warmest it'll be here. low hundreds. and then, of course, factor in peninsula east bay shore and then san francisco. and kind of like the book end. santa clara valley, san francisco the book ends of the bay. and everybody's going to fall in between this set of numbers. san francisco going in here to 90 on tuesday. and then cooling down back here. coming up in sports, why this golfer pulled the night, night steph curry finishing
