communities wiped out, millions without power, and the death toll rising. hurricane helene leaves a trail of destruction across the southeast. widening its offensive. israel taking on iranian-backed terror groups on multiple fronts, adding the houthi rebels as a target. plus, the fallout following the assassination of leader hassan nasrallah. ♪ loving her was easier than anything i'll ever do again ♪ and remembering kris kristofferson. the rhodes scholar-turned-country music superstar and hollywood actor has died. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we start with hurricane helene and the destruction in the southeast. the recovery is going to be long and costly. at least 116 people have died, and that number is expected to rise. the scenes look like something

out of a disaster movie. millions of people are without power, there are gas shortages, spotty cellphone service, and communities cut off by collapsed roads. the monster storm cut a devastating path stretching more than 600 miles through ten states. cbs' nicole valdes reports from greenville, south carolina. >> reporter: historic flooding from helene submerged parts of western north carolina under water over the weekend. >> there was a whole house right there. >> reporter: this marshall, north carolina, woman says she fled after the waters reached waist deep. >> i was grabbing stuff. i have my three dogs in the car. my car was almost under water. >> reporter: the state's governor says rescue efforts are ongoing and that food, water, and supplies are being airlifted to those stuck in the hardest hit areas. >> oh -- >> reporter: this video shows the moment a bridge in tennessee collapsed into rushing floodwaters. >> she was ready to sink. >> reporter: on tybee island in

georgia, this man who goes bike huck finn and his dog are hoping high tide carries them back out to sea after strong winds from helene stranded their boat on the side of the highway. >> i thought we was going to die. i had to cut anchor and it brought us here. >> reporter: this morning in south carolina, dozens are dead after hurricane helene pummelled the state. one couple dead after a tree fell on their car. >> my cat is alive. my neighbors are alive, and we are helping each other. >> reporter: massive recovery efforts are also under way in florida. >> we want to be helpful to get this debris. >> reporter: while touring the devastation, the state's governor warned his state is not out of the woods just yet with two more months left until hurricane season ends. nicole valdes, cbs news, south carolina. to the middle east now and israel is widening its attacks as iran vows revenge for the killing of leader hassan nasrallah.

the air strike and -- an air strike hit an apartment building in central beirut early this morning. the first attack in the center city -- in the city center in nearly a year of conflict. the popular front for the liberation of palestine in lebanon says three of its members were killed. hezbollah, which confirmed the killing of a seventh senior leader, is also stepping up its attacks on israel. the idf says the terror group went from firing several dozen rockets a day to several hundred. and dozens of israeli aircraft struck houthi targets in yemen in response to a recent attack. the israeli military says it targeted power plants and seaport facilities. cbs' imtiaz tyab reports from beirut. >> reporter: while israel's offensive against iranian-backed militant groups is spreading across the middle east the strikes in yemen come just a day after it was confirmed the leader of hezbollah, hassan nasrallah, was assassinated here in beirut. in a video released by

hezbollah, the bodies of hassan nasrallah and two others killed in israel's massive friday night strikes are wrapped in burial shrouds. as israeli warplanes continue to pound the same southern beirut neighborhood he was targeted in. at least 19 hezbollah commanders have been killed over the past few months, but the deadliest israeli strike was on there -- this building in southern lebanon where displaced people had been sheltering in the predominantly christian village, killing at least 30. in this video posted on line, a young man says he's trapped under the rubble and names the same street and building where the strike took place as he pleads for help. a humanitarian crisis is rapidly unfolding across lebanon with nearly one million people internally displaced according to the country's prime minister. on this quiet street in beirut haven.

advantage and is good for the region. >> and i think people are safer without him walking around. but they'll try to recover. we're watching to see what they do to try to fill this leadership vacuum. it's going to be tough. much of their command structure has been wiped out. >> defense secretary lloyd austin says the u.s. is determined to prevent iran or its proxies from exploiting the situation and expanding the conflict. and now to the presidential campaign. both vice president kamala harris and former president donald trump are turning their attention to the tragic aftermath of hurricane helene. trump is expected to survey damage while campaigning in georgia. harris is cutting her las vegas campaign trip short to meet with fema officials in d.c. all of this after both spent a full weekend stumping in battleground states. cbs' jarred hill joins us with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the storm is shifting some of the focus for the candidates, now 36 days until the election. over the weekend as you

mentioned, harris and trump were focused squarely on the battleground states, talking about immigration, as some of former president trump's allies continue to urge him not to focus on personal attacks. in battleground nevada, vice president kamala harris laying it all on the line. >> we know this will be a tight race until the very end. >> reporter: rounding out a tour of western sunbelt states where immigration is a key priority. she criticized former president trump's border proposals and rhetoric. >> we need a president who cares more about solving problems than playing political games and demeaning people full time. >> reporter: this comes as trump is facing scrutiny from republican allies for his latest around of attacks on harris. >> she's a stupid person. stupid person. joe biden became mentally impaired. kamala was born that way. >> i think the better course to take is to prosecute the case

"the raleigh news and observer" reports five people including a child were killed when a small plane crashed at the wright

brothers national memorial in north carolina. authorities say the plane crashed into the trees and caught fire saturday as the pilot attempted to land at the monument's airstrip. it commemorates the site where the wright brothers made it -- made their historic flight in 1903. the faa and ntsb are investigating. the "los angeles times" says california governor gavin newsom vetoed an artificial intelligence safety bill proposed by silicon valley. it would have established first in the nation safety measures for large a.i. models. it would have also established rules for developers to create protocols aimed at presenting -- preventing catastrophes. he said the bill would hurt a.i. innovation in california. it was opposed by meta and some democratic lawmakers including nancy pelosi. "the washington post" says austria's far-right anti-immigration freedom party is set to win the parliamentary election. it would be the first national victory for a far-right party in austria since post world war ii.

mission. nasa thought that it was too risky to bring them home on the "starliner" after it experienced thruster problems and helium leaks. dock workers are threatening to walk out in what could be the most disruptive strike in the u.s. economy in decades impacting anything and everything from food to clothing to toys and cars. here's matt pieper with today's cbs "moneywatch." >> reporter: stocks closed another record-setting week with a muted performance. the dow gained 137. nasdaq lost 70. s&p losing 7 points. tens of thousands of dock workers at major ports in the east and gulf coasts are preparing to strike as early as midnight tonight. the move could snarl commercial shipping on a massive scale and disrupt the national supply chain. they could shut down 36 ports from maine to texas that handle about half the goods shipped into and out of the u.s. the union is demanding significantly higher wages and a total ban on the automation of cranes, gates, and moving
