put detectives on the right track. from kpix 5, this is the late news with sarah donchey on cbs news bay area. hello, i'm sarah donchey. >> i'm paul heggan. >> paul, we start with you at the top of the show. all anybody could talk about is the heat. it is hard to tell when summer ends and fall begins in the bay area. but, this has built even a little hot for that. >> this would be extreme in late july or early august for him and part of the bay area. it will be the hottest day of the year along the coast and in san francisco tomorrow. on october 1st. it is supposed to be halloween month not with these kinds of temperatures. let's take a look at what we have in store for us. it will be hot as we go through the day tomorrow. we have heat advisories and excessive heat warnings in effect for the entire bay area. in orange, those are the heat advisories. the pink and purple, excessive heat warnings, for most inland parts of the bay area, where temperatures will be over 100

degrees tomorrow and on wednesday. but, even the coast, in think that cisco included in the heat advisory because you are going to experience the hottest temperatures you've had so far this year. today was hot enough to begin with. the ticket look at our observed high temperatures for the listing of paper, which were well into the 90s in livermore, santa rosa, san jose, into the upper half of the 80s, fremont and cisco. low 70s for half moon bay. he will join the party tomorrow. light offshore winds will spell and return to the 80s. on the coast, for the first time this year, temperatures 20 to 25 degrees above normal tomorrow afternoon. 90s into cisco and oakland. above 100 degrees in san jose and concord. in terms of the heat risk, some of the hottest spots around intake and far inland to the east bay. moderate to high category already today. into the very high, even extreme category for tuesday and wednesday. this is going to have a fairly longtail, the heat wave. tomorrow and wednesday are the

hottest days. the above average temperatures last the weekend, and poor air quality. as if the heat wasn't enough, the heat don't predicting the record high temperatures traps urban pollution. a spare the air alert is in effect for tomorrow. we will take a look at how close we will be in record territory, in detail, in a few minutes. we will pay close attention to that, paul. thank you so much. firefighters have been very busy in the seat. a driver in concord called 911 after they saw smoke coming up from a brush fire at ygnacio valley road. firefighters detected from the ground and the air and they were able to stop it at five acres. pg&e has warned about planned power shut off in the east a because of the heat and the wind. important to note, the company told us those areas will not be impacted after all. there is still a chance, no, of said opt in napa county for about 200 customers. when it is hot, it is especially uncomfortable for people in a vallejo neighborhood. in a way we probably don't expect. they say heat wave comes with a horrible smell that is so bad, they can't even open their doors without it hitting them

flare, that are his favorite ones. >> reporter: christine says everything was going great for the first few years. then, around 2020, that all changed. >> it is really, really bad. it is nauseating. you can't, you can't really even open the door without being hit in the face this smell and it smells like a broken sewer line. >> reporter: miss teen says for the past four years, the air outside her home smells so bad, so often, that she can't even enjoy her backyard because she says a nearby wastewater treatment plant. >> the issue is it comes up and it hits us in heritage, as i said, 40 to 60% of the time. >> reporter: the city's wastewater district says it is repairing a portion of the plant and that is the cause of the smell . they said the project is slated to be completed by november. but, during weeks like this, with temperatures expected to hit the high 90s several days in a row, christine says the stench is only getting worse.

>> it is an 1896 house, we are concerned about climate change so we don't have air conditioning, we don't use air conditioning, we don't want to generate that in the world. today, i work at home, i'm trying to work in my office. we have everything shut down because you can't have the windows open. >> reporter: christine and so many other people she says she talks with in vallejo find the city's timeline unacceptable . she wants the problem fixed now, but says sadly, she isn't too confident it will even be fixed by november. >> the smell is bad enough. but, that emma coupled with the feeling of the community being disrespected, not listened to, not cared about, that is, i think, the big issue. >> reporter: we reached out to the alejo flood and wastewater district for comment on the story. they have not yet responded. as for christine, she says she doesn't know how much longer she and her husband can take it. they may have to end up moving, which is an option she knows not everyone

disturbing. so, the guy was hit by a car and then are back this weekend, his clothes on fire before he fell down on the ground to try to put the fire out. just last month, we showed you this video of people inside of a ring of fire during another vallejo sideshow. by the end of the night, a man was shot and killed. now, after the sideshows are back this weekend, some neighbors told our john ramos, nobody has been there to help. >> reporter: on sunday night, hundreds of people showed up at the corner of sonoma boulevard and kentucky street for a sideshow. the street sign is missing today but you can see a guy carrying it as he walks through the crowd. sam caniglio lives in the neighborhood and wasn't able to get to his

house because of the cars blocking the streets. >> you can't drive anywhere. it is loud, it is scary. people have guns. they ended the event by shooting the guns off. >> reporter: he says it lasted for about 90 minutes and not a single police officer ever showed up. >> we are fed up with the lack of no one showing up to do something about it . >> reporter: while they may be fed up, no one seems very surprised. the night before, on saturday, another sideshow began at the corner of georgia street and columbus parkway. the street is covered with black skid marks, and there are ribbons of rubber that sheared off the tigers. at this one, estimate of the crowd size range from 500 to 1000 people. >> it was the biggest one i've seen. it's getting bigger. they are getting more people to show up. >> reporter: kay lives at the intersection and says there were people climbing onto roofs of houses on the street to watch it. he says it lasted 40 minutes and no one arrived. >> nobody cared. >> reporter: at the police show up? >> never did. i don't know why they don't show up. no idea. you would think that they could

bring in four, five cars and block off that intersection and arrest 1000 people. and, they don't. >> reporter: his neighbor, henrique, sees the practicality. >> my wife asked me to call the police and i said what is the point? they are not going to do anything. there's too many people. too many cars. what are they going to do? in august, when they towed away a couple of cars, but usually the gatherings pop up so quickly that there is >> reporter: that is the question everyone, including the police, or asking. the department is already struggling with a manpower shortage and the idea of a handful of officers stopping hundreds of people from doing anything seems pretty unlikely. they can sometimes get help from neighboring departments, like in august, when they towed away a couple of cars. but, usually, the gatherings pop up so quickly that there is little time to coordinate anything. but, wycotten thinks you don't have to arrest everyone. >> if they put eight or 10 of

them in jail for a night, they wouldn't go to another one. they would know that the police are going to come and arrest them. they don't have to worry. the police are never going to show up. >> reporter: like it or not, that is the message that has been sent and received. expect the sideshows to continue. like your mother probably said, it is all fun and games until someone gets hurt. >> in case you are wondering, we did reach out to vallejo police about the sideshows that happened over the weekend but we still have not heard back. tonight, spoke his writing from the southern lebanon skyline while israeli troops move in on the ground. the invasion works a significant escalation in the conflict between israel and hezbollah. at least 95 people in lebanon were killed in israeli strikes yesterday, adding to a decile of more than 1000 people since monday alone. the israeli military claims they are doing targeted raids against hezbollah and are not planning on a long-term occupation. the stage is set for the

♪ the barnes firm, injury attorneys ♪ ♪ call 1-800 eight million ♪ tonight, san francisco firefighters climbed up the roof of a concrete building that went up in flames in potrero hill. the building on missouri street was vacant. thankfully no one was hurt. firefighters told us the fire looks suspicious because it broke out on three different flow rates. partners here in the bay area have been in florida. they are there helping after hurricane helene. they got there last week ahead of the storm. hurricane helene made landfall as a category 4 and is now being blamed for at

least 120 across the southeast. oakland and contra costa fire both sent their assistant chiefs to the state last tuesday. they plan to send at least one more firefighter as well. is as leaders in states like north carolina prepare for the dustbowl to grow. >> we have heard accounts of people seeing house floating down the river with people in them. >> the area around asheville, north carolina was one of the hardest hit spots. many towns in the western part of the state are still cut off or completely underwater after historic flooding there. just a really, really terrible storm, just a reminder of how powerful these storms can be. >> everything came together exactly wrong with the hurricane, even before it made landfall, feeding all the oyster with a predecessor rain event. feet of rain in terrain that cannot handle it. we have the opposite problem. it will be hot and dry. we have to watch the

wildfire threat in the next couple of days. we will be threatening record high temperatures. let's get into the details of what to expect as we continue this week of first alert weather. warnings continue into wednesday. they are likely to be extended in length through the rest of the workweek. widespread triple digit waters through part of the bay area tomorrow and wednesday. not quite as hot late this week but still into the 90s for inland communities all the way to the weekend. high temperatures estate of a farmer for the duration of the seven-day forecast. in the short-term, temperatures at least are backing them a little bit this evening. it is still mild out there right now. we will check the current conditions as we look out across a fog free bay area and send this go. the fog will not be an issue at all tomorrow morning. letters are still in the 70s in san francisco and san jose. when was the last time san francisco was the second warmest spot on the map? is backing into the low 60s in santa rosa. upper 60s for concorde, oakland, livermore. temperatures are going to cool off a whole lot as we go through the night. most of us waking up in the 60s early tomorrow morning. with a lack of followed and the warmer jumping off point, temperatures will take off once the sun

comes up. let's take a look at where we will end up. i tomorrow afternoon, temperatures are 20 to 25 degrees above average. it gets up to 102 degrees in san jose. 105 schedules and morgan hill. a lot of the records we are starting to know were set on october 1st, 2020. temperatures inland will be the hottest. 105 110 degrees. 103 in the peninsula in redwood city. 91% let's go. the device for oakland. at or above 100 degrees for most inland communities in the north bay. even into the mid-80s for bodega bay, pacifica, half moon bay. we will have the offshore wind not strong enough to significantly boost the fire threat but a strong enough to take the warm air and puts it to the coast and reduce the marine influence. temperatures are still going to be 20 degrees cooler along the coast compared to further inland but it will still be a significant warm-up for coastal communities as we go to the day tomorrow. how close will be be to record territory? well, close but

short in san francisco and oakland, falling 6 to 8 degrees below tomorrow's records. typing a record high temperatures in redwood city and breaking records in san jose, santa rosa, and livermore, just a few of the communities doesn't get back down to territory tomorrow. while the heat will peak tomorrow and wednesday, this particular heat wave has a pretty long tail to it. we are talking temperatures in san francisco not returning to near average, around 70 degrees, until monday and tuesday of next week and it will take even longer the further inland you go. san jose doesn't get back to near normal highs in the upper 70s until wednesday and thursday. it is a similar story for inland locations in the east bay. temperatures in livermore above 105 the next couple of days. still above 100 on thursday. only getting back to the near average high temperatures by wednesday and thursday as well. it will be a long stretch of hot weather to begin the month of october, just be ready to sweat it out. common sense precautions. stay

hydrated, find air-conditioning , at least some shade. temperatures will stay above normal. the coolest day is next monday. still a good 10 degrees above average for inland communities. temperatures around the bay might be closer to normal by monday may, still life to 7 degrees above normal temperatures along the coast. also, the same pattern with the hottest day begin tomorrow and slowly trending downward . five straight days of temperatures in the 70s along the coast is unusual, even in the month of october. the closest we will be to record territory is tomorrow. you can look forward to monday of next week, when temperatures along the coast get back down into the 60s, at least. >> at least there is something to look forward to on a monday. >> right, and it is the weekend. paul, thank you so much. remember last week, we told you about a man whose petticoats were stolen from his santa rosa property? that was caught on

camera and celebrity chef guys vieri tried to help spread the word about it to find the goats named nacho, chili, and atlas. >> of the bat, i felt alone and isolated. and, the community reminded me i cannot. >> 10 days after they were stolen, owner they were right. two of the goats were th ganapoler got the news he had been hoping for. sheriff's deputies said the goats were safe and they were, back home. here's how they figure this out. deputies say someone called them and set their family just bought two coats but they saw a news story about the theft and thought there goats might be the ones that were taken. they were right. two of the goats were there . the detectives tracked down the cellar, a 48-year-old santa rosa man. they arrested him for felony grand theft and a probation violation. shawn êdiscoî ganapoler said the third boat was found elsewhere. he told us he's incredibly grateful for the love and support he got from the community who worked to bring the goats home. detectives were trying to defy the female suspect caught on, when the goats were stolen. vern, hard to follow that one. over to
