ground invasion. israeli forces cross into southern lebanon, escalating its offensive against the hezbollah terror group. disaster in the southeast. hurricane helene's catastrophic toll coming to light, leaving a splintered land of wasteland, homes, businesses, and entire towns. and countdown to the showdown. with hours before the vice presidential debate, how the candidates are preparing. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we start with that breaking news overnight. dockworkers at ports from maine to texas are on strike. about 45,000 members of the international longshoremen's association walked off the job when their contract expired at midnight. the workers are fighting over wages and automation. the strike could cause delays and a shortage of goods across the country, leading to higher prices. also breaking overnight, israel began its ground incursion into southern lebanon,

marking a significant escalation against hezbollah and opening a new front in a year-long war against iranian-backed proxies. flares and explosions were seen coming from the israel/lebanon border. the israeli military says the operation will be limited, localized, and targeted against hezbollah infrasructure along the border. it comes after israel's bombing campaign wiped out most of hezbollah's top militants including longtime leader hassan nasrallah. the militant group vowed its fighters are ready. it's still unknown what if any response there will be from iran, which typically uses its proxies to fight. israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu issued a warning, saying there's nowhere in the middle east that israel cannot reach. defense secretary lloyd austin said he spoke in part on it. the pentagon recently said it is

sending thousands of additional american troops to the middle east to bolster security. and now to the aftermath of hurricane helene. the full extent of the human tragedy and destruction still unknown. at least 130 people are dead across six states. hundreds remain missing in one of the worst storms in u.s. history. asheville, north carolina, a mountain tourist town far away from any coastline, decimated with roads cut off. cbs's skyler henry is just outside asheville. >> reporter: the southeast is suffering, days after hurricane helene hit. nowhere appears to be more hard-hit than western north carolina where some areas received more than 2 feet of rain. roughly 600 people are still unaccounted for. >> but this is just -- it's hard to understand. i mean, this is just massive. >> this will take years to clean up if it's ever. >> reporter: the city of asheville and the area around it

has been largely cut off since friday. cell service is mostly out. electricity won't be restored for days, and help has been slow to arrive. >> we've got a lot of family businesses that have been here since the turn of the century. they're devastated. they're trying to salvage anything that they can get. >> reporter: ten miles east, the tiny mountain town of swannanoa is named for the river that runs through it, the same river that washed it away. >> and this town is devastated. everybody focuses on big cities. not here. and we need help. we need food. and i know people are coming. i know they're coming, and i know god's got control. it really hurts to see such devastation. >> reporter: anita crowder's husband had to use a chainsaw to get into her family's home. her father died a week ago, and now they say the flood took what

little they had left. >> i can't imagine. it must be tough. >> it is. to see everything he worked so hard for destroyed. it's hard. these people worked hard for their -- what they got. it breaks your heart. >> reporter: president biden says he will visit north carolina on wednesday. he added that the region will get whatever it needs for as long as it takes to recover. skyler henry, cbs news, swannanoa, north carolina. well, president biden is calling donald trump a liar. it comes after the former president falsely claimed georgia's governor could not reach biden on the phone even though the white house said they spoke sunday night. >> trump has accused both of you of ignoring -- >> he's lying. let me get this straight. he's lying. the governor told him he's lyng. >> yesterday trump surveyed the

damage in north carolina while vice president harris stopped at a briefing at headquarters in washington. >> hurricane helene turned out to be the big one. >> we'll continue to do everything we can to help you recover and to help you rebuild, no matter how long it takes. >> the white house said harris would visit impacted areas as soon as possible without disrupting emergency response operations. 35 days to go until election day, and in just a few hours, the vice presidential candidates will be going head-to-head in their first and only debate. tim walz and jd vance have been preparing for their high-stakes showdown that will take place here at the cbs broadcast center in new york. jarred hill is outside our studios with a preview of what we can expect. jarred, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. there will be no opening statements, no notes, as well as no props when the two debate

for the first time here at the cbs broadcast center. a big change from what we saw in the big presidential debate is the microphones will be on all night long, allowing for a free flow of an exchange of ideas. the stage is set in new york for the vice presidential nominees to have their first debate. the debate between democrat tim walz and republican jd vance, also likely the final debate between their campaigns before election date. >> it's kind of a closing argument in a way. >> reporter: jd vance touched down on monday and has been holding mock debates with gop congressman tom em mer standing in for tim walz. >> he's going to be concentrating on the issues that matter most. >> reporter: walz told reporters he's looking forward. minnesota senator amy klobuchar is walz's longtime colleague. >> i think his strategy will be to continue to reach out to the

american people so they know who he is. >> reporter: tonight's debate comes on the heels of new cbs news polling showing how americans are feeling about the vp candidates. a majority of registered voters don't think either is qualified to become president, but enthusiasm for walz is higher at 65% compared to 49% for vance. when you break it down by party, a larger swath of democrats believe walz makes their ticket bet el while just over half of republicans feel that way about vance. residents say they're mostly interested in hearing about the economy, immigration, abortion, and other issues tonight instead of attacking each other. we're out in front of the cbs broadcast center. you can see barricades lining the block up and down the street here, just showcasing how much security there is around this debate with as much attention as there is around this election season.

the video was released of last week's incident near alaska. the f-16 was sent to intercept the russian plane. it comes after a series of incursions into the air defense zone just beyond american airspace. california bans college legacy admissions. and a major abortion ruling in georgia. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the atlanta journal constitution announced that a judge struck down the ban. it prohibited abortions once a doctor can detect a fetal heartbeat, that's before many women know they are pregnant. the judge says the law would violate the constitution. the state attorney general's office said that it would appeal the los angeles times says governor newsom signed a bill

legendary major league baseball player pete rose has died. he was 83. rose made history in 1985, breaking ty cobb's 57-year-old record for career hits ohm to get banned from the game years later. jim hill takes a look back at his life and career. >> two balls and a strike. left center field, and there it is! pete rose does it! 4,192. >> reporter: there weren't many better on the baseball field than pete rose. he's major league baseball's all-time hit king, a 17 time all-star at five positions, and a three-time world series champion known as charlie hustle. rose played in more major league games than any other player. but off the field he was often the subject of turmoil and controversy, including a lifetime ban from baseball for gambling on the sport. born on april 14th, 1941, in

cincinnati, ohio, pete rose made his major league debut six days shy of his 22nd birthday for his hometown rich, and his career began in a hurry, winning national rookie of the year honors in 19 f 3. he took home mvp honors in 1973, and lead the redds to five division championships and pennant championships. the first pennant championship in 1975 when he was also named world series mvp and again in 1976. then after 16 seasons in cincinnati, rose joined the philadelphia phillies in 1979, winning the third of his world series wins the very next year. in 1984 rose rejoined the reds where he resumed the role of player/manager and was the last player to do so. following his retirement he continued on as manager of the rich, but then he received a lifetime ban for gambling on games while he was still a player and managing. that made him ineligible for the hall of fame.
