with some of the night's biggest moments. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. some have called this vp debate the epitome of midwestern nice, but still walz and vance highlighted the ways that they think that their tickets would handle the nation differently. a handshake set the tone for a mostly civil debate. vice presidential candidates j.d. vance and tim walz in their first meeting sparred over top issues like iran and abortion. >> we trust women. we trust doctors. let the individual states make their abortion policy. >> reporter: and gun violence -- >> we unfortunately have a mental health crisis in this country. >> sometimes it just is the guns. it's just the guns. >> reporter: at times the discussion more tense like this exchange over the 2020 election. >> did he lose the 2020 election? >> tim, i'm focused on the future. did kamala harris censor americans from speaking their mind in the wake of the 2020 covid situation? >> that is a damning nonanswer.

>> reporter: while talking immigration, walz challenged vance over his past comments about haitian migrants living in ohio. >> that vilified a large number of people who were here legally. >> very worried about the things that i said in springfield. the people that i'm most worried about in springfield, ohio, are the american citizens who have had their lives destroyed by kamala harris' open border. >> reporter: in a new cbs news poll, debate watchers said the tone last night was generally positive. 42% said vance won versus 41% for walz. the rest said it was a tie. the more said they think walz is more prepared to be president, walz also ranged higher on -- ranked higher on abortion and health care, while vance got the edge on the economy and immigration. >> i've been impressed by the civility and the addressing of the issues. >> reporter: after the debate, vance sat for a cable interview while walz and his wife gwen grabbed pizza. we've talked about this before, right, the fact that these vp debates don't typically move the

needle for a presidential election. again, the big difference with this one is these two under card members of their tickets might be the ones who have the last word at least in this type of back and forth because as of now there is not another debate scheduled between the presidential nominees. those are going to be on the campaign trail the next couple of days. >> jarred hill, thank you so much. and a programming note for you. "60 minutes" will air a primetime election special on monday, october 7th, at 8:00 p.m. for more than half a century, "60 minutes" has invited the democratic and republican tickets to appear on its broadcast. vice president harris will speak with bill whitaker after initially accepting "60 minutes'" request for an interview with scott pelley. former donald trump's campaign has decided not to participate. the original "60 minutes" invitation to trump stands. and now to our other big story -- the middle east edging closer to an all-out regional war with israel and iran

3:36 am
>> it will be noticed. it will be painful. >> reporter: an israeli military spokesman said the country's air defenses intercepted many of the incoming missiles with help from the u.s. military and naval destroyers in the region. president biden said the u.s. remains fully supportive of israel, and directed the u.s. military to help shoot down the iranian missiles. >> we're still assessing the impact, but based on what we know now the attack appears to have been defeated and ineffective. >> reporter: iran says it launched the attack in retaliation for israel's ground offensive in lebanon and israel's strikes on hezbollah. >> iran is saying to israel we can get you, we know how to get you. we're not going to do it this time. we're not going risk a war. we're not ready for a war yet. but if push comes to shove, we can do it. >> reporter: the pentagon moved additional military support to the middle east ahead of tuesday's attack. the u.s. has more than 40,000 troops and aircraft squadrons spread across the middle east along with 12 warships in the region.
