this is "cbs news mornings." breaking overnight, dockworkers celebrate after reaching a tentative deal to suspend their strike which threatened to cripple the economy. verdicts in the tyre nichols case. three former cops held accountable in his fatal beating. and how the menendez brothers could be set free thanks to new evidence three decades after they killed their parents. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning the port strike is over, and dockworkers are back on the job. workers celebrated in brooklyn yesterday after the union representing at least 25,000 striking dockworkers from maine to texas reached a tentative deal on wages. it suspends the three-day strike until january, allowing time to negotiate a new contract. a baltimore local union

president says the deal increases workers' wages by 62% over the next six years. he explained how it impacts members. >> it means that they can provide, put food on the table, pay their bills. they don't have to worry anymore, possibly losing their cars or homes. we're coming back off of a major catastrophe, maritime tragedy with the bridge collapse. we were out of work for two months. now we were out of work a few more days. we're excited to be back. >> the deal does not resolve differences between the union and shipping companies over the use of automated machinery. turning now to the presidential race. donald trump holds a town hall in fayetteville, north carolina, today, while kamala harris holds a campaign rally in flint, michigan. yesterday harris picked up a big endorsement. naomi ruchim is in new york. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we're talking about former u.s. representative liz cheney who is now the highest profile republican to back vice president kamala harris. though cheney and harris have

almost nothing in common when it comes to policy, their common disdain for the former president is bringing them together. >> i am proudly casting my vote for vice president kamala harris. [ cheers ] >> reporter: a big endorsement yesterday for vice president kamala harris from a former top house republican in the birthplace of the republican party, rippon, wisconsin. >> we can chart a new way forward, not as members of any one party but as americans. >> reporter: cheney is an outspoken critic of former president donald trump. she lost her seat in the house after voting to impeach trump over the january 6th insurrection. >> donald trump is not fit to lead this good and great nation. >> liz cheney is a stupid war hawk. >> reporter: trump slammed the endorsement on fox news yesterday while on the trail in battleground michigan.

>> we're going to make it the car capital of the world again. >> reporter: trump again falsely claimed he won the 2020 election, and he repeated a baseless conspiracy theory about federal hurricane relief funds. >> they stole the fema money just like they stole it from a bank so they could give it to their illegal immigrants. >> reporter: the biden administration is pushing back, calling those claims, quote, completely false. today trump will stump in georgia and north carolina, two states impacted by hurricane helene. while harris is in michigan. meantime, preparations are currently under way for former president trump's return to butler, pennsylvania, this weekend. nearly three months after he survived an assassination attempt there. the suspected shooter was killed by u.s. secret service. >> thank you so much. now to the aftermath of hurricane helene in the south. recovery enters its second week today. the mayor of asheville, north

carolina, says that they are still in crisis mode. the overall death toll has topped 200 as the search for victims continues. more than half a million customers are still without electricity. president biden visited georgia and florida yesterday. fema has more than 1,500 people on the ground to distribute supplies. biden has deployed 1,000 soldiers to help. in memphis, three former police officers were found guilty in the fatal beating of tyre nichols, but they were acquitted of the most serious charges including violating his civil rights. as elise preston reports, the beating stemmed from a traffic stop last year. >> reporter: 29-year-old tyre nichols worked for fedex, was an avid skateboarder, lived with his parents, and wore a tattoo with his mother's name on his shoulder. >> my son loved me to death, and i loved him to death. >> reporter: but after police stopped him, body cam footage shows what happened next. nichols runs off. then officers apprehend him.

this took place less than 80 yards from his mother's home. he called out for her to help him. >> mom! mom! >> reporter: for some three minutes memphis police officers punched, kicked, and are seen hitting him with a baton. even after he was restrained. >> tyre nichols' death won't if -- won't go unaccounted for. that is critical. >> reporter: two of the officers pleaded guilty and actually testified during this trial. nichols' family walked out and said even with a mixed verdict they feel like the officers are all being held accountable. elise preston, cbs news, memphis, tennessee. overnight israeli bombings causing huge explosions outside of beirut's international airport. the airport borders a neighborhood that is considered hezbollah's stronghold in the capital. lebanon's public health ministry

2019 during a work trip. she also says brooks subjected her to repeated unwanted sexual advances for about two years. the lawsuit says brooks filed his own preemptive anonymous lawsuit last month claiming the allegations are false. "usa today" says tiktok star mr. prada was arrested after a baton rouge therapist was found dead wrapped in a tarp along a louisiana highway. 20-year-old terryon thomas who has millions of followers on tiktok was charged with second-degree murder. authorities say the body of 69-year-old nicholas abraham was discovered sunday. police in texas arrested thomas on tuesday after baton rouge police said he fled from them in abraham's car. there's no word on a possible motive. and the "associated press" says florida -- former colorado county clerk tina peters was sentenced to nine years behind bars in a voting data scheme. a jury found peters guilty of

state wildlife officials said that she would have to go back to the wild, but governor maura healey paused that plan yesterday. the state issued a permit letting nibi stay at the rehabilitation facility as an educational animal. the september jobs report is out today, and reported trouble for spirit airlines. shanelle kaul has your cbs "moneywatch" report. >> reporter: u.s. stocks closed lower thursday as concerns are growing over tensions in the middle east. the dow lost 184 points. the nasdaq was down 6, and the s&p 500 lost 9 points. the september jobs report will be released this morning. economists predict it will look a lot like august's report. a gradual slowdown in hiring, and a small increase in wages. a bloomberg survey forecasts the u.s. added 150,000 jobs in september, and if the numbers reveal what experts expect, it could push the federal reserve to cut rates sooner rather than later.

nothing to solve the homelessness crisis. adam yamaguchi takes us to los angeles where the mayor has launched a program that could provide a long-term solution. >> reporter: this is coley king's mobile exam room. >> want to be there for them. >> reporter: four days a week in los angeles, the street doctor with the venice family clinic makes house calls to those without homes. >> we saw you and -- really the last time was 2021. then we lost contact. so i -- here you are. >> reporter: 53-year-old melissa is one of more than 45,000 people experiencing homelessness in the city of los angeles. >> there are patients that suffer from very serious medical illnesses. there are patients that have schizophrenia, have hiv. so i think there's urgency from everyone to solve this. >> reporter: nearly half of all americans living on the streets are here in california where there was roughly one shelter bed for every three people who

needed one last year. >> it's time to increase the local level of cleanup -- >> reporter: earlier this year leader like california governor gavin newsom were taking steps to clear encampments after the supreme court ruled cities could ban people from sleeping outside. >> no longer excuses. >> reporter: easy to say, perhaps, but the reality is more complicated. >> the goal has got to be to solve the problem. >> reporter: karen bass is the mayor of los angeles. >> our problem here is we don't have enough housing, we need to build. we need to purchase buildings. >> reporter: and that's where she's focused -- getting people off the streets and into shelter that up until now did not exist. she's doing it by leveraging empty motels in city-owned properties with the goal of moving people indoors urgently and clearing encampments permanently. >> you don't solve anything by clearing an encampment and just moving them to the next street.

>> reporter: so far since 2022 her inside safe program has brought more than 3,000 people indoors from over 16 encampments, and the city has seen a drop in street homelessness. >> this area here, many months ago, was filled with tents. and you can imagine what family wants to bring their kids here, right here, if this is filled with tents and you're afraid of the people that are here. and look at it now. >> reporter: jessica has been unsheltered since 2019. just days after we met her, she was placed in interim housing. >> should be able to get some more rest. this has been stressful. >> reporter: others like brian are still waiting. >> hard to be in a camp -- on cameras showing this. >> we're dealing with massive numbers so it is going to ache a while. i wish i could tell you that on this date, this problem would be ended. i can't do that. but what i do know is that if we continue along with the trajectory that we're headed on, we will be able to solve this problem. >> reporter: an approach that could also solve a problem for dr. king. you may lose contact with people
