for record-breaking heat. you start to worry for our safety and their safety. homeless encampment in oakland was recently cleared. why neighbors are saying it is causing more problems. nasa astronauts visits kids battling cancer. how they are finding inspiration with each other. from kpix this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. hello, i'm sara donchey. this week has felt like a longest summer ever considering it is fall. the heatwave lasted days already and it is not done with us yet. with the heat comes the fire threat. lake county, two buildings have been destroyed after a brush fire broke out this afternoon. quickly spread to more than 400 acres north of clear lake. strong winds have made firefighters lives pretty difficult. >> ambers land ahead of the

fire. new fires form. now our crews have to retreat and try to start putting in new containment lines, those are lines or hem lines. >> the bay area is also experiencing dangerous fire conditions especially higher elevations and in response the national weather service issued a red flag warning for a lot of places. said to last through tomorrow morning. something to keep in mind because zoe has been telling us all day and evening it will be hot through the weekend. >> oh, no, not fun outside unless you want to head to the beach and cool off in the water. 80s along the coastal communities. that lets you know how hot it will be further inland. like we are talking about, red flag warnings in the higher elevations in the hills around the bay area. does remain in effect until 9:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, not a huge issue throughout the weekend t. is definitely something that we are keeping a close eye on overnight tonight. the humidity is not going to really rebound. the temperatures are not going to be all too cool overnight. they will be cooler than today,

though. we will enjoin them while we can. lows will be cooler along the coastal communities, sitting in the middle to upper 50s along the coast where it will be open your windows weather and enjoy the cooler air while you can. inland areas will be seeing temperatures waking up early tomorrow morning in the middle to upper 60s. kind of depends where you are. at least everybody is going to at least feel some sort of cool air to start off the day because by the afternoon we are likely going to be breaking records once again. triple digit highs are expected across the bay area. i will be tracking those and breaking down the details in just a little bit in the full forecast. >> all right, thank you very much. we appreciate it. we will be of course tracking the extreme heat and the fire threat all throughout the weekend. for updates download the free cbs news app. the 49er faithful are going to be sweating it out, too n their red and gold. it will be around 95 degrees around

kickoff sunday in santa clara. the head coach says he asked the nfl to let them wear all white uniforms but they said no. telling him they have to plan uniform changes at the beginning of the season despite them having no way of knowing what the weather would be like at the time. the league played a small concession to give the players a little bit of relief >> they will let us do our throw backs and alternate it with the other ones we will get as much white on as possible the most we can do is white pants. hopefully it helps a little >> shanahan added they will have extra ivs on hands for players before, during and after the game to make sure they stay hydrated that is what the team is doing the best they can. how about the fans? we went there to find out. >> here we go. >> reporter: 49er mark is no ordinary fan. he has a wall in his home dedicated to all of his niner's memorabilia and

every game day he dresses up in what is his signature look. >> you have seen me. the face, it is almost like this, the eye patches, hat on, face is bright 49er red. i got my jersey that the 9ers gave me and i wear a kilt. i am pretty recognizable. >> mark says he has painted his face red for every game the 9ers have ever played at levi stadium. he has season tickets. >> i am in section 225, row 3. cheer and say hello. >> reporter: and tailgates before every game. >> social club. swag, 49ers tailgate. >> reporter: for the first time ever, there sunday, mark is contemplating not painting his face that signature red. the reason? the heat. >> i was like you know what? it will be one of the hottest days ever even comparing to some of the other ones. maybe i not paint up. >> reporter: the temperatures at the stadium could reach the high 90s, 9ers officials are warning fans to come prepare

and stay hydrated. mark says he has been going back and forth about to do the paint. >> i said well, get a fan spritzer, i can not do that because i will wet the expaint it could potentially drip. and well, put antidrip stuff, but that can make me get baked while i am sitting there for hours. >> mark says it is hard for him to think of going to the game without the paint on. he told us he is not totally superstitious but may still feel a little weird without it. >> it will be the first nonfootball, first football game i never painted up. i always painted for every game if it is away or home. >> at this point mark says he is monitoring the forecast. most likely it will be a game-time decision. either way, though, he says he is going into the day with a plan. >> probably make sure i have probably two waters in between every fun drink. try to make sure i can extend the day with lots of hydration and make sure

nobody else is getting overheated. >> fans heading to berkeley tomorrow as they host espn college game day for the first time ever. should have a few hours of nice weather. at least. coverage kicks off before the sun gets up, that is the reason why. fans began to gather for the pregame show. a group of cal fans lobbied hard to broadcast from berkeley. >> i think the moment that this started to surface to the mainstream was when it was tweeted out "cal-amony" and then from there, tweeting out about lost to the "woke agenda" that meme took off. lynch will be the celebrity guest. you know it is entertaining because he always is. taking a live look out at the coliseum as the mayor promises a new big update on the sale there coming monday. the city as of now needs these

payments to go through in order to balance its budget. earlier this week the city councilmembers were concerned that the group punching the coliseum missed a payment deadline. something the mayor and developer both deny. we spoke to the mayor earlier who insists the deal is still moving forward. >> first and foremost, you know, there has not been a deadline that has passed. if you look the purchase and sale agreement they are in their cure period. in regards to moving forward there have been amendments to the psa and it will be announcing it on monday. they are strong amendments, amendments that will place the city in a stronger position. >> oakland city councilmembers says the city has not been transparent but thao says parts of the negotiation needed to be kept under wraps for now..

in the meantime, newsom announced plans for homeless camps. but just last month the city council voted to close off a street after reported complaints about homelessness and illegal dumping. so far neighbors have seen no action. we spoke with a business owner who says efforts to clear another nearby homeless encampment only made their situation worse. >> reporter: since the closure of the encampment on mlk and grand the owner of a business nearby says there area of 23rd street is worse than it has ever been before. now, there are tents popping up across the street, on west street. >> there was another fire in front of the roll up here. >> reporter: the owner of transmission gallery on west grand street. the back of the building is here on 23rd. he is concerned the cleanup of a

nearby encampment pushed more people on to this street. >> we are compassionate but it starts to wayne and worry for our safety and their safety. >> his worries are warranted. there have been multiple fires. >> this is, this is evidence of one fire. this is the large fire that you have photographs of. >> reporter: the latest happened on tuesday. damaging the building across from him. a sign on the wall says paulette, rip. she died in a fire a few months ago. he estimates there have been six fires in the past year and worries his building could be next. >> this is my office. this is my gas line. right here and they tore the door off. i don't come out here and fix things because i really don't want to confront these people. >> he can't use his backdoor because a tent is blocking it. brian can see the fire from his

office window and that is not all. >> they don't look up. they just, they just continue to do what they do. you know, it including all sorts of things >> we saw what appeared to be a drug deal while speaking. >> i tend to consider it not so much homeless encampment but a tolerated crime scene. you know, people are not really sleeping here at night. what they are doing is business. out of these tents >> brian says it gets busier and potentially more dangerous later at night >> what do you see here at night when you spend the night here? >> oht is a continuous activity in the back. usually until about 6:00 or 7:00 in the morning. >> reporter: city crews cleared out the encampment on nearby mlk and west grand last month because of the crime happening there. the mayor told us that the city plans to follow up

with enforcements in the area that they cleared. but she says while some people are accepting resources, the city is limited in the help it can give. >> until the federal government takes seriously funding rehabilitation centers and funding, you know, mental health facilities that we are going to be displacing certain marginalized groups. >> despite all of this, he does not plan to leave. he wants to see the city take action by closing off the street at least temporarily. >> clear it off, clear it out. >> reporter: he is in talks with city officials and he is hopeful for the future of this area and his gulery. >> we reached out to the city and have not gotten a time line for the 23rd street closure. paying for city street parking in san francisco do not scan a qr code if you see it. it is probably a scam. the officials say they found five fraudulent qr stickers around fishermans wharf. asking the drivers to scan the code with

. head's up if you have any plans in the city there weekend. chances are you might given everything that is going on. within the last hour or so, cal transshutdown the 101 connector to make repairs on concrete barriers and railings. the 9th street off-ramp will be closed. rerouted to the 7th street off-ramp. i-80 will not be effected but they expect heavy delays on all routes because of this closure.. >> we know this is, it is never a good time to close down any of them. bear with us as we go through the process. we will have it repaired as quickly as possible >> suggesting taking public transit instead if it is an option for you and your family.

repairs should be done before the monday morning commute [music] i said there is a lot going on. the sound of blue grass filled golden gate park today. many performers at the harley strikely blew grass. tens of thousands of people will attend the free festival. i hope they are not taking the 101 connector. but, if you do, we told you here first. and, everybody who is going no matter what direction is needs hot weather >> normally you bring a jacket or a second jacket and second jacket and especially golden gate park. none of that cold air will stick around this weekend. it will feel so hot. 80s in the forecast for golden gate park. 90s downtown san francisco. yes, very, very hot weather is on the way. you might be wondering why. let's take a look at the big picture.

all revolves around an area of high pressure controlling the weather. bringing us record-breaking high temperatures. you can see it here the lack of winds and show you where it is because of the lack of winds rotating all around me. the heat dome will persist. you might of noticed a little more cloud coverage. the cloud coverage brought a little more cool air to the pacific northwest. you notice where the cool air is located it is confined, well to our north and taking a closer look at california all of the heat is going to continue to build over the next 24/48, even 72 hours as we are going to continue to see quite a lot of heat. what is really interesting is just by looking at the cloud coverage you can see the area of high pressure. the clouds rotating around it in southern california. that area of high pressure will continue to impact us. even though it brought a few more clouds today it will not do anything in terms of cooling us down for

the next couple of days. in fact, another peek of the heatwave is on its way. waking up tomorrow morning i hope everyone can enjoy the start to the day. it will be the only cool air that you will be feeling, middle 60s for the inland locations, upper 50s closer to the coast. again, the heat will build more from here. by tomorrow afternoon, we are expecting widespread record-breaking high temperatures, even for coastal communities it will be heating up. beautiful beach day is in store if you want to escape the heat. sitting in the middle 80s from pacifica to half moon bay. 90 degrees, i don't have air-conditioning and it is going to be hot for all of us. inland even if you have air-conditioning it is dangerously hot. triple digit highs, likely breaking records. fremont and redwood city all likely getting in the triple digits. san jose, i have been pointing you out all day. you have been taking the cake when it comes to beating countless

records, monday, you tied a record, tuesday, wednesday, thursday, today, breaking record highs, tomorrow, with 103 degree forecast high temperature that is easily going to be breaking records, smashing records i would say. the heat will only continue through saturday, sunday and into monday as well. take a look at the seven-day forecast. luckily, luckily, we see a break in the heat at the end of our seven-day. still going to be sitting in the triple digits through the rest of the weekend and through the upper 90s and monday. by tuesday, back in the upper 80s. wednesday, thursday, a little more cloud coverage, finally feeling more seasonable. it is nice to not see triple digit highs every day of the seven-day at the end of it, finally relief. still, over the next 48 hours this weekend it is not going to be fun. if you want to spend any sort of time-outdoors, inland areas not the place to be. go over to the coast, beautiful beach days are on the way. i will take my time this weekend,

[ laughter ] >> reporter: at children's hospital at mission bay the sky's the limit >> we have patients here who are on hard journeys and astronauts who have done challenging journeys themselves. they are sharing stories and helping each other. >> one, two and three. >> on this day the medical center met with nasa ames and the nasa space center to accelerate cancer care and research. but, in the

auditorium they met signing autographs and posing for pictures. also a medical doctor. >> what we do to prepare and how we not just survive but sustain and even thrive in space is not unlike the journey that individuals going through these kinds of treatments. >> nicknamed taco. a veteran of 5 spaceflights. he is also a patient. >> hoping to be an inspiration to young patients. and i think i can bring something else to the table because i also have cancer. [ laughter ] >> astronauts visited patients in their rooms serenading, fighting cancer. >> i enjoyed it. took my mind off of my chemo and learned cool things. >> reporter: the 2-year-old loves buzz lightyear n fact, any story about outer space. he is battling brain cancer. >> we appreciate all of the

cool stuff like the astronauts coming by and all of that stuff. >> reporter: finally, a visit to 18-year-old claire, diagnosed with leukemia two weeks ago. she is considering a change in his major to space sciences. >> now i have seen all of this i am much more interesting in spacial research. >> good morning. >> good morning, how are you. >> reporter: the astronauts were equally impressed and inspired. >> they have an attitude that will carry them through, i think >> more than survivors. they are role models. and, i would fly with them any day. >> reporter: to infinity and beyond. coming up in sports, college game day live on campus at uc berkeley. the head coach's request for the student body. a former niner. tough to catch. current 9ers weigh in on bringing them down.

. all right, we got to talk about the heat, we have been talking about the heat in santa clara, the cardinals better for preparing for that than we are. >> it has been tough, the 9ers are hopeful that george kittle and fred warner will suit up for the game on sunday. both are questionable. they did practice on friday afternoon after sitting out the last two practices. a healthy warner is going to be big for the 9ers defense. they are preparing to chase around murray. this season he has six touchdown passes, just one interception and already 160 yards rushing. the 9ers know how hard it can be to bring down the 5 '10 quarterback. >> at any moment he can play at

express the joy in a smile. they studied two dozen dolphins at play. their mouths open up in a similar way to we smile. they make smiling expressions at each other rather than themselves or interacting with humans, they are playing rather than fighting. two men in los angeles county got a big surprise after they heard strange noises coming from under their house. they put up night vision cameras to see what it was. and this is what they saw when they checked the cameras the next morning. a giant black bear squeezing itself out from under the crawlspace. the department of fish and wildlife say they see it all of the time. yep. it is a big bear. this time of the year . >> okay. a huge bear. >> there time of the year the bears are looking for a quiet place to spend the day and move on. >> he could barely fit. he was
