tracking milton. another hurricane is gaining strength in the gulf and taking aim at florida. the latest on the storm's path and preparations. first -- [ siren ] one year later, sirens mark the day thousands of hamas terrorists invaded israel killing more than 1,200 people and taking hundreds of others hostage in the worst attack on the jewish people since the holocaust. good morning, i'm michael george. we start with the horror that unfolded one year ago today. as dawn broke, terror followed. hamas launching a barbaric attack, butchering and burning entire families, raping women, and catching israel's military defenses by surprise. this morning thousands of people gathered at the site of the nova music festival to remember the 364 lives murdered that day and the 44 people taken hostage.

they played the final track before a moment of silence. this is just one of many memorials being held to mark the attack. here in the u.s. and across the globe the day is being marked with rallies and protests for and against israel. about 100 hostages remain in gaza. seven of them american. naomi ruchim joins us with more on where things stand now and one family's ordeal. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. today is a somber and painful day for anyone with ties to the middle east, especially american jews. it comes as the israeli defense forces says it foiled hamas' plan of firing a barrage of rockets into israel at the same time of the october 7th attack. for one american woman the pain is as fresh as it was one year ago. several family members were taken hostage, and their reunion is still an unfulfilled dream. >> the twins in particular, emma was taken by herself for ten days. >> reporter: for alanna, october

7th, 2023, was the day her world changed forever. one year ago hamas abducted six of her family members into gaza including three young children. >> it doesn't feel real still. i think i went into autopilot after that and decided i had to fight for them. >> reporter: alanna's female cousins and their little girls were released during a hostage deal last november. her cousin's husband remains in captivity. >> there are so many of us suffering, israeli and palestinian. >> reporter: crowds gathered at the site of the nova music festival monday in remembrance of the victims. meanwhile, the u.n. secretary general says the humanitarian situation in gaza is hanging by a thread. according to the hamas-run health ministry in gaza which does not differentiate between civilian and militant deaths, more than 41,000 palestinians have died in the conflict with millions more displaced. now new fears of an all-out war.

israel launched a ground operation in southern lebanon after strikes took out top hamas and hezbollah commanders there. israel has also vowed to respond after iran unsuccessfully targeted the country with hundreds of missiles last week. >> all-out war in the middle east to be avoided, has to be. we really have to avoid it. >> reporter: still, a year later, alanna hold out hope for the hostages. >> i'm never going back to a world of the status quo where my family could be harmed again. >> reporter: and for humanity. today president biden will mark the anniversary with a candle lighting at the white house honoring the victims. vice president kamala harris will plant a memorial tree at her residence. and former president donald trump will attend a memorial service in new york later today. there are also numerous gatherings planned in cities across the nation to honor the lives lost on october 7th and since. michael? >> naomi ruchim, thanks.

israel intensified its bombardment of northern gaza and southern lebanon in its growing war with iran backed militant groups. air strikes hit a suburb to the south. lebanon reported more than 30 strikes. israel says it was targeting hezbollah. surveillance video in the northern israeli city of haifa shows the moment a hezbollah rocket landed yesterday. israel says some buildings were damaged, and ten people were injured. hezbollah says it was targeting a military base to the south. and thousands of people from a refugee camp in northern gaza fled after israel issued an evacuation order ahead of a new air and ground offensive in the region. now to hurricane milton. it's quickly intensifying in the gulf of mexico, and it's heading to the west coast of florida. it grew from a tropical storm to a hurricane in less than 12 hours yesterday, and it's continuing to strengthen. florida's governor already

issued an emergency declaration and is warning residents to prepare. cbs' cristian benevides reports from tampa. milton is now a hurricane. >> reporter: as six southern states continue to deal with the devastation hurricane helene left behind, the gulf coast of florida is now bracing for milton. the storm is forecast to make landfall around the middle of the week. >> the forecast currently calls for the storm to reach potentially a category four with landfall at a category three. >> reporter: while milton gathered steam over the weekend, floridians prepared. >> making sure all the sandbags are at our doorstep garage. the most preparation we're going to do. >> just doing it to help out our grandma. but we're going to get groceries later and such in case it's really bad. >> reporter: the storm was on track to become a major hurricane with the tampa bay area in its path. >> the entire florida peninsula on the gulf side has the

potential to have major impacts from storm surge. how that storm ultimately develops in terms of the track will obviously have a big impact in terms of which areas are going to get more damage than others. >> reporter: forecasters say milton could potentially cross florida and head out into the atlantic. that would spare georgia and the carolinas from anything like the catastrophic impact helene delivered. cristian benevides, cbs news, tampa, florida. >> here's the latest on milton's track. the storm is expected to become a powerful category-four hurricane tomorrow, then make landfall on wednesday as a category three with maximum winds near 115 miles per hour. the national hurricane center says a risk of flash flooding will begin before milton makes landfall, and there's also a risk of a life-threatening storm surge which could reach more than nine feet south of milton's landfall. and as naomi mentioned earlier, the presidential

campaigns are pausing to mark october 7th. over the weekend, former president donald trump returned to butler, pennsylvania, the site of the first assassination attempt against him. and then stumped in the battleground state of wisconsin sunday. and vice president kamala harris visited charlotte, north carolina, helping put care packages together for those hit by hurricane helene. tonight she speaks to "60 minutes" in a presidential election special. cbs' natalie brand reports from washington. >> reporter: former president donald trump focused his election efforts on wisconsin sunday, a battleground state he narrowly lost to president biden in 2020. >> we're a nation in decline. we're a nation in distress. and we're going to get it fixed very quickly. it's going to be the greatest win in the history of our country. i believe that. >> reporter: sunday's rally marks trump's fourth visit to wisconsin in a little over a week. >> i think it shows how important wisconsin is to trump. >> reporter: among those in the crowd, loyal supporters and a

democrat who said she already voted for vice president kamala harris but wanted to see a trump event in person. >> i like to see things firsthand. i don't want to just take what i hear on social media and go with it. >> reporter: vice president harris is off the trail sunday but launches a media blitz this week which includes an interview with "60 minutes" in an election special airing monday night. in a clip released sunday, harris spoke about u.s.-israeli relations as the jewish state fights on multiple fronts. >> do we have a real close ally in prime minister netanyahu? >> i think with all due respect the better question is do we have an important alliance between the american people and the israeli people. and the answer to that question is yes. >> reporter: with election day now just 30 days away, southeastern states hit hard by hurricane helene are working to make sure voting can go on as normal. >> i think that north carolina will be prepared to make sure

crews put out flames on an engine after it landed. frontier says there were no reported injuries to the 197 people on board. the supreme court starts a new term, and arrests in a new york city attack. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the new york times" reports two boys were arrested in connection with an assault on former new york governor david patterson and his stepson. the 12 and 13-year-old boys were charged with gang assault. police say patterson, who is legally blind, and his stepson were attacked friday while walking in manhattan. both were treated at a hospital for minor injuries. investigators say at least five people were involved in the attack including two adults who fled. "newsweek" says the new supreme court term begins today with three pending rulings that could change america. one deals with whether the federal government is regulate untraceable, self-assembled ghost guns with background checks and serial numbers.

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ take a look at this. popular internet personality jack dougherty totaled his $200,000 mcclaren during a live stream on kick over the weekend. video from inside the car shows dougherty looking down at his phone while driving in the rain on a slippery miami highway. he loses control of the car and crashes into a guardrail. video also shows him screaming for help and his cameraman in the passenger seat bleeding from the head. afterwards, dougherty was banned from kick. some hospitals are facing an iv shortage after hurricane helene shut down a key north carolina facility. here's matt pieper with today's cbs "moneywatch." >> reporter: wall street is hoping to keep up momentum this week following friday's rally. the dow posted a record closing high helped by a stronger-than-expected jobs

it was the moment basketball fans and one particular proud dad have been waiting for -- lebron james and his son bronny making nba history last night as the first father and son to play in any nba game at the same time. bronny entered the preseason game for the l.a. lakers against phoenix as a substitute to begin the second quarter. it also happened to be his 20th birthday. madonna's younger brother and longtime collaborator, christopher chicone, has died. she posted a tribute to him on instagram detailing their at times strange relationship but calling him the person who she danced through life with. madonna saying he was the closest human being to me for so long. chicone had been battling cancer. he was 63.
