2024. it's "cbs news mornings." mon stir milton. the hurricane is barreling toward the gulf coast now as a powerful category 4 storm, an area still reeling from helene's deadly wrath 12 days agent. the warnings, the evacuations, and the latest on the storm's track. good morning. i'm michael jogeorge. hurricane milton could be the worst to hit the florida gulf coast in more than a century. the winds have been downgraded to a category 4 with winds a 1940 miles an hour. milton is expected to make landfall late tomorrow night or early thursday morning. evacuation orders have been issued, and it appears that residents are heeding the call to leave with roads already jammed. the tampa bay area still recovering from helene is now scrambling to clean up the debris left behind before the storm hits.

cbs's cristian benavides joins us from st. pete beach with more on the preparations. good morning. >> reporter: michael, good morning. county officials say they're working around the clock to do so, but time is running out. strong winds and waves battered the mexico's yucatan peninsula overnight as hurricane milton barrels toward florida's west coast. >> if they have called for an ee vague yags order, i beg you, i implore you to evacuate. >> reporter: many are heeding the warnings with a deadly storm surge with as high as 15 feet forecast fmeror some areas. >> with the last storm, we got flooded. it's all about prepping this time. >> also to buy gasoline and dwindling supplies at stores where some shelves are already empty. >> paper, food, water, canned

food, boxes, everything. >> reporter: some residents are digging out since helene struck two weeks ago. now there's a race against time to remove piles like this one before milton moves through. >> we need as much of this debris picked up as much as possible. this creates a safety hazard. >> reporter: staff at the zoo are rushing to secure the animals before milton makes landfall. >> what we have are night houses or buildings that the animals are used to going into. >> reporter: at tropicana field they have 10,000 beds set up for emergency workers. this was one of the areas most impacted by hurricane helene's storm surge. and if the current track holds, milton could be much worse. michael? >> cristian benavides in st. pete beach, florida.

the hurricane is heading toward florida's west coast where it's expected to make landfall late tomorrow evening as a category 3 with winds near 125 miles an hour, and it will stay at hurricane strength while moving east across central florida thursday. forecasters are calling the expected storm surge extremely life-threatening with a height of 10 to 15 feet in tampa bay. torrential rain will also cause a risk of flash floods. now, election day is just four weeks from today. vice president kamala harris is in the throes of a media tour, while former president donald trump is taking aim at the biden administration over one of the biggest global challenges to date. bs's jarred hill joins us here with the latest on the campaign. good morning. >> former president donald trump is positioning himself as a global leader on the one-year mark of the attack on israel. meanwhile vice president kamala harris is trying to expand her reach during appearances on podcasts, talk shows, and "60

israel and hamas. >> we're not going to stop pursuing what is necessay for the united states to be clear about where we stand on the need for this war to end. >> reporter: trump criticized the biden administration's handling of the conflict. >> the past two years have proven that weakness only bee gets violence and war r mother nature also a factor many this election. in battleground north carolina, more than a million registered voters live in disaster areas as a result of hurricane helene. on monday the board voted to give new help to voting sites and postal services that have remained disrupted. all as they brace for another storm. they're pushing back against conspiracies about the response to helene, in particular false claims that fema is diverting funding or only helping democrats, michael. federal and state officials are warning this is making it harder to get information and assistance to the people that really need it. >> jarred hill, thanks so much.

now, to the middle east. a region grappling with the horrors of war spiraling into an all-out regional conflict one year after hamas terror attack on israel. with the wounds still as raw as one year ago, israelis came together as ceremonies and memorial sites to remember the 1 ,200 victims and the hostages still held in gaza. the israelis pressed ahead to take out terror targets in gaza and hezbollah. cbs's elizabeth palmer lsh. >> reporter: hamas shot their way out to israel, storming the supernova music festival and murdered and kidnapped people.

israel responded first by bombing gaza and then sending in ground forces. the mission, to destroy hamas and rescue the hostages. a year later neath nieither has been accomplished. on this anniversary with hostages still in gaza, there's no closure. israelis are remembering victims and mourning the missing. >> for a lot of people it's been a year. for us, it's -- it feels like a week. >> reporter: hamas terrorists murdered va dir rosenfield's sister and husband. >> reporter: 14 hours the townships were alone. >> yes. we got messages from neighbors that heard twins crying. >> how are the twins? >> they're all right. they're all right. they're healthy. they're happy.

it was a bit of a tight squeeze for a 350-pound bear to get in and out of a crawl space underneath a california couple's home. now, the couple says they were ironically watching the horror movie "winnie the pooh: blood and horror" last week when they

heard noises under the house. they set up cameras outside of the house and were startled to learn a bear was linking under the house. they boarded up the crawl space, and the bear has not returned. travelers from rwanda will get an extra health screening, and new rulings on abortion laws. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. "the texas tribune" rules the u.s. supreme court let stand a decision barring emergency abortions that violates strict bans in texas. the high court kept a lower court order in place saying hospitals cannot be required to provide emergency abortions that would go against texas law. the biden administration asked the justices to throw out the lower court order, arguing that hopitals have to perform abortions in emergency situations under federal law. the "atlanta journal-constitution" says the georgia supreme court reinstated the state's near ban on abortions. it comes a week after a state judge ruled the law banning abortions once a doctor can detect a fetal heartbeat about six weeks into pregnancy violated georgia's constitution. that's before many women know they're pregnant.

google to open up its android app store to competition following an earlier ruling that google has an illegal monopoly. the tech giant has until november to make the changes. google says it plans to ask the court to pause the changes as it appeals this decision. mcdonald's is going after big beef. the fast food chain is suing jbs, tyson foods, and other major beef producers for allegedly price fixing. the lawsuit filed in federal court last week accuses the companies of working together to drive up prices since 2015. mcdonald's is seeking financial compensation and a court order to end the alleged price-fixing scheme. and it will soon cost you more to play the lottery. the cost of mega millions tickets is going to more than double starting next april. right now each ticket is $2. next spring, they'll be $5, but officials say the change will lead to bigger prizes and more frequent winners. that's your "cbs moneywatch" for this tuesday morning.
