chp officer posting "where's the beef." try seeing the northern lights from space. ♪. from kpix this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. good evening i'm juliette goodrich in for sara tonight. we are following every step of a high profile san francisco murder trial in a case that sent shock waves through the tech community and got national attention. so, jury selection is about to begin in the trial that will decide the fate of the man accused of killing cash app founder bob lee. tech consultant murdered lee during an argument about his sister. he pled not guilty. lauren thoms spoke to an expert about what each side will be looking for when it comes to picking a jury. >> reporter: 18 is the magic number the defense and prosecution are trying to reach as jury selection kicked off tuesday morning. to get to a

panel of 12 unbias jurors and six alternates both sides began with a pool of 140 people who will decide the fate. >> it will be tough for the defense. not impossible but tough. >> reporter: jury selection one of their specialty. as a trial consultant help or hurt >> they are trying to de-select jurors. >> these are the people that make a determination of innocence or guilt. there is the most important part of the case. you know, we want people that are going to be able to be fair and impartial that will listen to the evidence and, you

in that circle. those people may be younger. they are going to be sort of the, like i said, the silicone valley people may be good for people of the prosecution. because they liked bob lee, they will be more receptive to him and his lifestyle, even. >> reporter: prosecutors are looking to eliminate jurors that may be favorable to the story. >> those who have felt accused, maybe even wrongfully accused. those that come from a close family. those who have had to play the role of like a big brother in the past since i think that is an important aspect in this case. >> reporter: during jury selection where cameras are not allowed inside a judge told jurors it is their ability to consider evidence that is most important. and for julian finding those people is the toughest job. >> it could be a heavy burden to try to, you know, find people that will be fair in this case. >> and we will have full coverage through every

development. >> there has been new developments in the most infamous murder cases right here in the bay area. a judge granted scott peterson's defense team access to decades-old evidence in his bid for a new trial. so, peterson's team requested access to 600 pieces of evidence and were granted access to a handful of those including transcripts from a suspect interview from a burglary near peterson's home around the time his wife, laci, disappeared. he was convicted of killing laci and their unborn son in 2002. he is serving a life sentence without possibility of parole. let's go across the country to florida now. people barely started to cleanup the debris littering neighborhoods two weeks after hurricane helene smashed into the state and killed more than 200 people across the south. now, there is another storm that is barreling across the gulf of mexico and it is on a collision course towards florida. hurricane milton. strengthened to a category 5 storm. there is how it looks from space. you can

see it from the international space station. take a look. storm chasers with noaa went on a ride inside hurricane milton as it tracks towards the sunshine state. they said it was a bumpy ride. now, local leaders are pleading for the people in the storm's path to leave warning they could be killed if they stay. >> this is not survivable. i just want to tell you, if you think you will be able to stay out there and protect your property it is not going to happen. >> reporter: the tampa mayor warns the storm surge could be deep enough to swallow an entire house. as wilson walker shows us a team from right here in the bay area come with ample experience handling natural disasters and they have been called in to help. >> reporter: depending on what the need is if it is heavy

rescue, water rescue. search dogs and doctors, engineers, we have them. >> reporter: the fire marshal is talking about the deployment of california task force 3. a team of 46 assorted specialists now on their way to florida. >> number of semi trucks with all of our equipment which is about 60,000 pounds of equipment to be self-sustained for at least 21 days it is so the roll. then yesterday the other half of the team took flight out of sfo. >> from september 11 to katrina you can name any major american disaster and this team has been there. >> there is a gentleman by the name of mr. butler. he had to get dressed before he would leave and he wanted to have on his hat and his nice clothes before he left. >> reporter: now, task force 3 heads to the gulf where they have been before. this time in anticipation of a potentially historic storm. >> well, you always look at what the situations are and that is where we do hope that

people heed the directions for if it is evacuation and being prepared. >> everyone is looking at the storm is shaking their head you >> wonder what it is going to look like. really, i just ask anybody if you are here in the bay area, being prepared is paramount and key so that we can do the greatest amount of good for the greatest number of people. and, so, if you can this is always a reminder to have that emergency water, have that emergency food, have emergency power, things so that you can be self-sufficient. >> paul heggen joining me now. the team will not know where they will end up but the mission could change hour by hour, obviously, we are talking the storm could be more powerful than helene. >> it will be about same strength at landfall. category 4, this will be a strong 3 or low end category 4 but at a more densely populated part of the florida coast. it could be worse especially because it is

on the heels of hurricane helene. back to back disasters, it is a powerful storm in the gulf of mexico right now. it is making more and more progress. the eye standing out clearly on the latest imagery. it made that north easterly turn towards the west coast of florida. let's take a look at the traditional perspective of where milton is right now. zoom in for a closer look. you can see that well-defined eye. it is a small eye of the storm. still a category 5 with 160 mile-an-hour sustained winds as it approaches landfall winds in the upper level will tug the storm apart, reducing the organization. there is only so much time for it left to lose strength. so it is likely still going to be borderline category 4 storm. even if it is category 3 it will still be devastating for the west coast of florida. as it makes landfall it will weaken and friction will land will slow down the wind speeds. it will maintain hurricane strength as it makes its way to the florida peninsula. not just the wind but the storm surge, it is really going to be at the greatest down the coast from a

point of landfall. landfall is close to the tampa st. petersburg area. the strongest storms will be closer to fort meyers because of how the winds behave. the hurricane is where you get the greatest storm surge t is grabbing the top layer of the ocean and sending it onshore. 12 feet of storm surge is possible. and the storm will produce plenty of rain. the yellow stripe indicates 5-10 inches of rain at least. there will be some spots that pick up a foot to a foot and a half. coastal flooding, inland flooding, damage, hurricanes are also a danger. as milton makes closer hit to landfall that will happen tomorrow evening. joules? >> thank jules? >> thank you. san francisco just released 13 schools that could be on the chopping block or merged next year. so, these are the 11 elementary schools, the

district says the criteria for making there list having fewer than 260 students. these schools are also in the lower 50% of composite scores. these are the two high schools on the list, june jordan school for equity and the academy of san francisco. the criteria there, high schools with fewer than 400 students that are not alternative schools. so, parents, educators, students spoke out about the closures at a school board meeting tonight. >> -- if you can truly come to our school and see our diverse and engaged community as failing there is something wrong with the way you are defining failing. >> the superintendent says the final list will be presented to the school board in november. and the final decision of which schools to close or merge will be made in december. you might remember the school district got national attention in 2021 for a plan to rename a dozen of schools named

after historical figures, the plan was pulled after the district got scathing backlash from parents and even the mayor. now, further south on the peninsula, one school is getting backlash for dropping a keyword from its name. >> reporter: everyone connected to the school from faculty to former students have nothing but great things to say about it. >> we are a jewish school. we are purposefully pluralistic and intentionally inclusive. >> small classes, from then i graduated in 2010 until now it is 2024 the school has doubled in size, actually. >> reporter: recently the small private high school in palo alto is in controversy. the reason? the name change. >> it goes against everything

that kehillah was founded on. the jewish identity and the only school jewish high school in the south bay. >> reporter: the school changed its name from jewish high school to high school. the dean said it was a decision that has been in the working for years and one made with the intention of making the school more inclusive. >> it is a he brew word that means community. and, that world we love and we held on to kehillah. most people if they refer to the school just called it kehillah anyway. >> reporter: many alumni saw the name change as a move to try to hide the school's true identity. >> i think we just need to say how it is. this is an act for them to distance themselves from the jewish community by removing the jewish name in part. >> dan and close to 700 others connected to the school signed a petition calling for the school to return to its

previous name. dan says it is especially important right now as the war between israel and hamas has put many jewish communities on edge. >> it is conveying that it is acceptable to distance yourself from your true identity when times get tough or external pressures. this is not the time to do that. the time, it is time to do the opposite. judaism and being proud of it, we need to double down and be proud of who we are and stand up for what is right. >> reporter: the rabbi says the notion that the school is trying to hide its jewish identity is ludicrous. >> nothing could be further from the truth. nobody is hiding. as matter of fact we are so proud of who we are and for good reason. we fly the israeli flag when you walk in front of the building. you see the israeli flag, the american flag and the flag of california. if we were hiding something we would put the flag away. >> according to a state report, anti-jewish hate crimes have

seen a sharp increase in recent years even though the state saw a drop in overall hate crimes during the same time frame. overall reported hate crimes were down just over 7% between 2022 and 2023. despite that decrease, hate crimes targeting jewish people saw a spike of nearly 53%. over that same time period antilbgtq plus bias events increased by over 86%. still ahead. tonight, the unusual bust. not so much about "where's the beef" but what's inside of the beef? from the ground, this display of lights is magical. it is hard to beat the view from space. and, tonight on the late show you will find out why stephen colbert is cracking a beer. >> you asked for miller highlife. . california law enforcement agencies will often post pictures when they make a big fentanyl bust. this one really stood out to us. one chp division posting "where's the beef" and governor's office calling it a meaty haul. chp officers dumped out a cooler when a k-9 alerted them during a traffic stop last week. the dog did not just sniff out the meat it was the drugs inside. the agency says there were 11 pounds worth of the drug hidden in packages of meat valued at half a million dollars. officers arrested the driver who was from washington state.

all right, let's take a live look at san francisco, u.s. navy ships are sailing in the bay. soon, jets will be roaring over the city and that means, fleet week is back. losing its impact. it will be hanging out nearby. it is far enough away that we get back into our back and forth fog pattern and a return to near average temperatures, beginning, already, tomorrow. the temperatures around the bay and along the coast were back to near normal today. cooling off quickly, even where temperatures climbed into the 90s, east of the oakland hills, looking at all of the fog, that is part of the cool down, now, temperatures retreated to the 60s, even 50s on the cool end. in the 50s in san francisco and santa rosa. the temperatures in the 60s will fall and everybody should wake up in the 50s by early tomorrow morning. free air-conditioning for those places that have been really cooking over the past week or so. let's take a look at how the fog is going to behalf for the rest of tonight. a good push across the bay and inland valleys by tomorrow morning. compact. not going to take too long. just the presence of that fog and low cloud cover along

with the onshore breeze will result in temperatures closer to where they are supposed to be this time of the year. still about 5 degrees above average in the santa clara valley. average high tomorrow, 78, topping out at 83. a lot better than the 102 yesterday. lower to middle 80s there. lower than the triple digit heat. the temperatures around the bay, normal. 70 in san francisco and 80 in redwood city. mostly in the lower to middle 80s until you go farther north. it will be around 91 degrees. similar temperatures around windsor. hotter spots will be toasty tomorrow. a far cry from where we have been recently. and showers heading into the weekend. rain chances for the north bay. below 50/50 on saturday. that is really going to be the onpart of the bay area that has a chance of shower activity on saturday. if you get a few showers passing

through, they will likely amount to lesser than that in rainfall. we will take what we can get. temperatures staying close to normal as we look at the entire seven-day forecast, warmest day inland, 80s tomorrow, thursday, through the weekend, early next week, a mix of upper 70s and lower 80s with a mix of clouds and sunshine as well. the temperatures around the bay consistent, staying in the lower half of the 70s, the back and forth fog pattern is with us. every once in awhile, drizzle as well. the temperatures along the coast will stay in the 60s over the course over the next several days, some of the fog will be persistent on the day-by-day basis. enough of the clearing trend midday to the afternoon that visibility should be okay for friday, saturday, sunday. >> we like that. and welcome back carl just right at the right times just not interfering with the blue angels. straight ahead in sports, all of these injuries. so, why
