lieutenant dan. plus, trump supporters rally to welcome his running mate to the bay. and why a plan to welcome people back into fishermen's wharf is making some very salty. >> if you push the fisher emen out, there's nothing but a t-shirt factory. and how this could be the answer to a very san francisco problem. from kpix, this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. >> hi, i'm sara donchey. ban busy night of news tonight, we have been anxiously tracking the path of hurricane milton. it's finally starting to weaken a little bit, but it's been hours since it slammed into florida's gulf coast, and it's done plenty of damage. the danger is far from over right now. right now more than 2 million people are in the dark in florida and at least one county there not a single customer has power. a storm chaser caught this video of damage around tampa. strong storm surge has turned roads into rivers there. intense wind a lot of rain has

been causing transformers to blow. anderson cooper saw that firsthand when he was reporting from bradenton and trying to stand upright. >> and the water now is really starting to pour over. if you look at the -- whoa, okay, that wasn't good. we'll probably go inside shortly. like stuff is just -- this came the the river. thankfully it's just styrofoam. >> part of the hazards of the job there. powerful winds actually shredded the roof at tropicana field stadium, the home of the tampa bay rays. two days ago it was filled with cots and used as a home base for emergency workers. they had to go to a safer area before the storm hit. and tonight a crane came crashing down into the street downtown saint petersburg. thankfully, no reports of anybody getting hurt after

that. >> oh. violent tornado. violent, violent. just took out a semi-truck. >> well, that storm chaser got what they were looking for. they got so close to a tornado in fort pierce it looked like a miracle his car was not sucked into it. the tornado tore through the city, levelled homes. deputies say multiple people were killed in that. and search and rescue operations are underway to try and find anybody who could still be trapped in the rubble there. now, crews from the bay area have gotten there to take part in rescue efforts. some of the members of the california task force three and four are on the ground ready to help people who need it. andrea nakano reports on that. >> reporter: some of the task force members from the bay area have been there for weeks helping those in the southeast get through hurricane helene. more left earlier today, and they are ready to be deployed to help those impacted the most by milton. the mission is clear for california task force three. >> but the team has one objective and, of course, the priority at the beginning is

life safety. so we're out there to do search and rescue and to save lives. that is the priority. >> reporter: chief jonathan johnston with the fire park protection district says 80 team members from various agencies from san francisco to san jose make up task force three. once a month they train together to prepare for disasters like hurricane milton. they will be joined by task force four from the east bay. >> they're currently headed to atlanta where they will rendezvous with task force three out of menlo park to augment additional resources because of the size of the storm. >> reporter: 13 members from the east bay left wednesday. when they arrive, they'll take orders from fema and get sent out to the hardest hit areas. crews hope those in the evacuation zones heeded the warnings. >> we like to advocate, to listen, and make sure you are prepared. the goal is not for rescuers to have to come and save you. >> reporter: as those in the southeast get battered by historic storm, chief

johnston says there is a valuable lesson to be learned from natural disasters for us here in the bay area. >> we do not have hurricanes. we do have earthquakes. so same thing. we're asking people here, this is a good reminder to be prepared. >> check this out. an alameda-based company took this video of milton stirring up 28-foot waves in the gulf of mexico. that east bay company uses a tool that looks like a high tech sailboat to map ocean conditions. noaa shared the video from sail drone today, taken about 40 miles away from the eye of the storm. paul, i have to bring you in for this. noaa satellite images actually showing lightning inside of the storm before it made landfall in florida. >> yeah. >> let's take that video full. look at that. >> all of those flashes -- especially over the florida peninsula, this is one of those things when hurricanes make landfall, the interaction with land can produce a lot more cloud to ground lightning. those are individual strikes. this new generation of satellites not only takes pictures of the clouds, which is what they've done from the
11:06 pm
beginning, but also has lightning detection, rainfall detection. it does all sorts of scientifically valid stuff that we need to kind of remotely sense what the atmosphere is doing, particularly when these events happen in less populated areas, which unfortunately, this isn't. >> this isn't. the technology has had to keep up because storms seem to have gotten much more intense. this was the case, this was a category 5 just not that long ago. >> just 24 hours ago this was a category 5 hurricane. it lost some of that peak intensity, but it was still a major category 3 storm as it made landfall. let's take a look at the map on the floor. i'm going to bring outhe united states up an navigate to where milton was 24 hours ago. we're going to bring the satellite replay on to the map. we'll start earlier today when the storm was still holding on to category 4 strength but as it lost that organization around its center, well, that means the peak winds around the center of circulation diminish, but it allows the storm to grow. the wind field within the storm to grow. so as it made landfall just after the sun went down, you see the nighttime shadow crossing the planet, this storm was
11:07 pm
producing winds on the order of 120 miles per hour at landfall near sarasota, florida. it's not just the winds, it's all of the other factors that have been causing problems as well for folks around tampa and saint petersburg down towards sarasota and fort myers. the rain continues to fall, especially heavy around daytona beach. it's still raining in tampa and saint petersburg, down towards sarasota and fort myers as well. some pulls farther to the's, but it's also the threat of tornados with the landfalling hurricane. all the red dots are confirmed tornados. as the daylight dawns early tomorrow they're going to confirm dozens more of these. over 130 tornado warnings issued as milton approached shore earlier today. this has been an all day event, and they're going to pick up six more inches of rain around daytona beach. not that much more for tampa, mercifully, but they've had over 11 inches of rain in 24 hours. that breaks the record for all

of october in tampa. it happened just today. fortunately for the bay area, our weather is less exceptional, especially compared to that heat wave we had to begin the month of october. our forecast in a few minutes. >> paul, thanks for sorting that out for us. while a lot of people rushed to evacuate from their homes before the hurricane, one person decided to stay on his boat in tampa bay. not the best place to be. this is joseph. he's known as lieutenant dan. he lives on a 20-foot sailboat. he's only got one leg, which people compared him to the character from forrest gump for that reason and others. lieutenant dan has gone viral on tiktok for deciding to ride it out. the tampa mayor says he convinced him to come to a shelter. probably good news given how dangerous that decision was. back here at home, san mateo county is urging the governor to declare a state of emergency, not because of a storm or a fire that just happened but over the insurance crisis. this is an issue that we've reported on, and you probably

has been kind of struggling. foot traffic just has not recovered since the pandemic, and it's left several longtime businesses like lou's fish shack. now there's a plan to try and draw people back in, and it's centered around the fishing industry itself. but ironically, some of those fishermen told our john ramos they are worried that plan could actually kick them out. >> reporter: there's no doubt that fishermen's wharf has fallen on to hard times. the new development proposal by a group called fishermen's wharf revitalized would pump more than $500 million into a plan to refurbish the structure and create a new tourist attraction at pier 45. in their pitch to the city, they said, quote, the neighborhood risks getting stuck in a downward spiral that will be very difficult and costly to reverse. while tourists may have felt compelled to visit in the past, the city can no longer afford to take for granted that they will
11:18 pm
continue to come without new investments and attractions added in the immediate future. the idea is to create a mixed use restaurant and entertainment area on pier 45 centered around the fishing operation, including what they call an experiencetial museum where people could watch the fishermen as they process their catch. >> apparently they want to put grand stands in here, grand stand bleachers in here, and make it some sort of recreational center for families to come to where they're not going to impede us. they want to be able to have the public look at us from far, but this isn't going to impede us. >> reporter: alex thinks the whole idea is stupid. right now most of pier 45 is used to store all the gear and the thousands of crab pots used by the fishermen. they say it's vital that those be close at hand but the new development would wipe it out as a storage area. >> they don't understand our business at all, but that's the whole thing, push us out. they're doing a good job of

even a chance for a couple of showers to make their way in. let's take a look at one of the forecast models and just simulate how that storm system is going to behave. we'll zoom in for a closer look and you see the showers as we go from friday midday into saturday morning, approaching the coast of the north bay as the sun comes up on saturday. it's the north bay that has the best chance of showers. the forecast model data has been consistent about that with a decent chance of a few hundredths of an inch of rain for the north bay saturday. not much of a chance that it makes its way deeper into the rest of the bay area. so for the east bay, for san francisco and oakland, and certainly for the santa clara valley, rain chances are lower than 20%. and even parts of the north bay. sonoma and marin counties have better rain chances than napa county. confined closer to the coast. everything should be winding down as we head into saturday evening. that's a few days off. we'll keep you updated on that as we head through the workweek. in the short term, let's enjoy our return to normal temperatures. looking outside right now towards downtown from treasure
