doubling down, kamala harris, calling donald trump a fascist, agreeing with the former president's longest serving chief of staff. how trump is responding. a potentially troubling escalation. north korea sends troops to russia to fight ukraine. why defense officials are so alarmed. good morning. i'm michael george. we start with the story breaking overnight. thousands of boeing factory workers voted to reject the company's latest contract offer. and continue their six week-old strike. 64% of union machinists voted to turn down the deal which included a 35% pay raise. over four years. but boeing refused to restore a pension plan that was eliminated a decade ago. >> made tremendous gains in this agreement. in many of the areas, our members said were important to them. however, we have not achieved enough to meet our members' demands. >> now, this strike has halted

production of boeing's best-selling planes. boeing declined to comment on the vote which came the same day the company reported a $6 billion loss in the third quarter. well, with 12 days left until election day, kamala harris and donald trump are embracing wildly different strategies to energize the coalitions they need to win. harris is ramping up her attacks on her republican rival, calling trump dangerous and unfit for office. that comes after trump's own former chief of staff john kelly called trump a fascist, and said he repeatedly praised nazi dictator adolf hitler. jarred hill is here. >> good morning, we've seen the candidates turn up the heat. to get the shrinking number of battleground voters. former president trump in georgia with conservative media juggernaut tucker carlson, while harris went one-on-one with voters about her plans in an

all-important pennsylvania. >> reporter: in a cnn town hall, vice president kamala harris pressed on how her presidency would move the country forward less than two weeks before the election. harris responding to voter questions on inflation. >> we will have a national ban on price gouging. >> reporter: immigration. >> we have to have a secure border and we have to have a comprehensive pathway for citizenship. >> reporter: and the conflict in the middle east. >> i do believe we have an opportunity to end this war. >> reporter: harris also going after former president donald trump. >> do you think donald trump is a fascist? >> yes, i do. >> reporter: seizing on new comments trump's ex-chief of staff john kelly in "the new york times". >> he's certainly an authoritarian. admires people who are dictators, he has said that. so, he certainly falls into the general definition of fascist. for sure. >> he's just putting out a 911 call to the american people. >> reporter: trump brought out

the fireworks in battleground georgia. >> i will protect georgia. i will protect our borders. i will protect our families. >> reporter: but his more charged comments came on social media, slamming harris as a threat to democracy and his former chief of staff kelly as a low life and a bad general whose advice in the white house he no longer sought. >> yjarred, we know vice president harris is planning a big day tuesday at the ellipse in washington. what's the purpose of choosing that location? >> yes, this is the place, essentially, michael, right outside the white house. and this is the place where we saw former president trump january 6th of 2021 right before the attack on the capitol give a speech, framing this from the harris standpoint, it's not just an election about who has the best policy or policy that voters may like the most but an election where they say democracy is at stake. it's something that we've heard from the likes of former republican congresswoman liz cheney, increasingly a hallmark of the harris campaign.

>> all right, jarred hill, thanks for joining us. >> thanks. well, the justice department is putting elon musk's political action committee on notice that it's million dollar sweepstakes may be illegal. cbs news confirms the doj send musk a warning that the giveaways could violate federal law. the prizes are aimed at registered voters in the seven battleground states. musk is spending millions of dollars to support former president trump's campaign. cbs news reached out to musk's pac and did not hear back. an ominous new development in the war in ukraine. the pentagon confirmed that thousands of north korean troops are in russia in what defense secretary lloyd austin calls a very serious escalation. very serious escalation. cbs foreign affairs correspondent margaret brennan has the story. >> reporter: video released from the ukrainian government shows north korean troops receiving military gear in russia. cbs cannot independently verify

the footage, but today, defense secretary austin confirmed that vladimir putin and kim jong-un have their troops training side by side at three specialized military sites inside of russia. >> there is evidence that there are dprk troops, you know, in russia. >> reporter: ukrainian president zelenskyy warned him that russia may send those forces to ukraine. proving putin seeks to escalate, not negotiate. >> reporter: and south korea officials say the number may soon climb to 10,000, revealing that russia is already training 3,000 north korean special forces how to operate equipment including drones. u.s. officials said the north korean soldiers tral traveled in mid-october by ship from north korea to eastern russia and could end up on the battlefield. >> if russia is indeed forced to turn to north korea for manpower, this could be a sign of weakness, not strength, on the part of the kremlin.

>> reporter: russia has already lost 6,000 soldiers according to the pentagon and has turned to hired mercenaries from cuba and others for manpower. and access of u.s. adversaries are now helping russia. iran sent personnel in drones. china led much needed financial support and north korea sent munitions. the u.s. is still trying to figure out what kim jong-un feels he's getting out of the this deal and fears it could help build russian expertise to his nuclear program. >> it's been concerning. certainly, this development, this willingness of kim to literally put skin in the game here. >> reporter: north korea is arguably one of the most heavily sanctioned countries in the world but the white house said they are planning more of them. in the final weeks, the biden administration will be sending more weapons including artillery to ukraine. but what is clear, is america's adversaries are now

working together to help russia fill in the gaps created by those western sanctions, and to potentially prevail with this land grab in ukraine. that's something that sets a dangerous precedent and the next president will have to deal with. margaret brennan, cbs news, washington. in the middle east, the lebanonese army said three of its soldiers were killed in an israeli air strike while evacuating injured people in the south. fire and smoke were seen over the beirut skyline this morning. israeli military says it has tracked 160 hezbollah targets yesterday. after ordering residents to leave. the israeli military says hezbollah fired about 135 rockets into israel yesterday, including two that set off air raid sirens in tel aviv, delaying the departure of secretary of state antony blinken. blinken, meanwhile, wraps up his middle east visit today with a stop in qatar. the u.s. has been working to restart cease-fire talks following the killing of hamas

leader yahya sinwar. new details in the e. coli linked to mcdonald's taylor farms is recalling yellow onions out of abundance of caution. after sliced onions were named as a possible cause in the mcdonald's outbreak. the recall prompted at least one other colorado-based restaurant chain to pull onions from some menu items. cbs' karen morfitt has the latest from colorado. >> reporter: mcdonald's said the sliced onions topping its quarter pounder burgers could be the culprit behind the e. coli outbreak. the onions sourced from a single facility are being scrutinized along with the quarter pounder beef patties. but a mcdonald's spokesperson adds the beef comes from multiple suppliers and is cooked well above the 160 degree temperature that kills the e. coli bacteria. noting there would have to be preparation failures at several restaurants. mcdonald's stock was down 5%

today with the news. now 25% of restaurants nationwide have temporarily stopped serving quarter pounders. >> other beef products of mcdonald's including the cheeseburger, hamberger, big mac, mcdouble and double cheeseburger are not impacted. >> reporter: the cdc said 49 cases were found in ten states, 26 cases in colorado and one death. ten people have been hospitalized including a child. the cdc said cases may go up because of the time it takes for people to get sick and then be diagnosed. we also know the first lawsuit was filed on wednesday. karen morfitt, cbs news, boulder, colorado. coming up, an arrest in the shooting at a democratic committee office in arizona. what police found in a suspect's home. and a 45-year-old murder in illinois is solve. what finally led police to the killer.

others wounds in an attack what's believed to be kurdish militants on a state-run aerospace and defense company in turkey. officials say at least two of the attackers were killed. hours later, turkey's air force struck kurdish militant targets in iraq and syria in retaliation. a cold case murder in illinois is solved and arrests in attacks on a dnc office. those are some of the headlines we're following on the morning newsstand. the arizona republic reports fbi agents found more than 120 weapons at a home of a man suspected of shooting at a democratic national committee field office. jeffrey kelly was arrested tuesday. authorities say federal agents confiscated weapons from his home and car including machine guns. prosecutors say he was preparing to commit a mass shooting. the democratic campaign office was shot at three different times last month and early this month. kelly was charged with several crimes including committing an act of terrorism.

the "philadelphia inquirer" says a city synagogue founded in 1740 was the victim of vandalism, arson and attempted break-in all in one day. police released surveillance video of two men who attempted to break into the congregation on tuts. authorities say they also released video of a man they say lit a dumpster on fire. a memorial outside the synagogue was also vandalized. police are trying to determine if the incidents which officials call anti-semitic in nature are connected. and the chicago tribune said north aurora illinois police used advanced dna technology to link the 1979 murder of a teenage girl to suspected serial killer bruce lindahl. investigators believe lindahl abducted kathy halle in her apartment complex. her body was found in a river three weeks later. police considered a cold case for decades due to lack of evidence. lindahl linked to at least a dozen murders died in 1981.
