murder. what comes next? hold the onions. mcdonald's zeroes in had on the source of a deadly e. coli outbreak. the impacts to other fast food chains. but, first, entering the final stretch with two very different messages. kamala harris brings out the star power in georgia as donald trump heads west and talks revenge if he wins back the white house. good morning. i'm michael george. we are now just 11 days away from election day and the two campaigns are using two very different tactics to hammer home their final messages. vice president kamala harris getting a major dose of star support. tonight beyonce joins her in houston and last night she was joined by bruce springsteen and former president barack obama. meanwhile, donald trump is keeping to his usual themes and attacking the special counsel overseeing two investigations into him. cbs news jarred hill joins us

now from the campaign trail. >> reporter: good morning, michael. while there is certainly an effort by both of these campaigns to expand their electoral map, harris and trump are leaning heavily on tried and true themes and supporters at this late stage in the race. for the first time vice president kamala harris and former president barack obama took the campaign stage together rallying in front of a georgia crowd yesterday. >> we will win. >> reporter: before a crowd of over 20,000 outside of atlanta, the two highlighted reasons folks in the battleground should vote for harris rejecting former president donald trump. >> kamala harris doesn't have concepts of a plan, she got a plan to make your life better. >> there's a choice that everybody has. it's either donald trump in there stewing, stewing over his enemies list or me working for you. >> reporter: the star studded

rally also featured appearances from rock legend bruce springsteen and movie legends with ties to the peach state. >> we want a president who believes that this american dream is for everyone. ♪ the u.s.a. ♪ ♪ >> reporter: out west trump spoke to voters in arizona. >> we're a dumping ground like a garbage can for the world. >> reporter: in atlanta he denied john kelly's account that he praised adolf hitler's generals. >> no, i never said that. >> reporter: today texas takes center stage. trump in austin, harris with a rally in houston where a source familiar tells cbs news she'll be joined by texas native beyonce. so why texas, which is almost certainly going to go republican? abortion rights and immigration are huge topics there. harris's team also wants to use the platform to reach battleground voters who might be numb to all the ads they're getting in their own states. michael, there's also the tight

senate race that's happening there elevating the conversation about the balance of power in congress. >> all right. jarred hill in new york. thanks. >> reporter: thanks. now to the stunning developments in a case that captivated the nation in the '90s. the menendez brothers currently serving life sentences for killing their parents could soon walk free. los angeles district attorney called for their early release. now if the parole board and the judge both approve the request, the pair could be released after more than three decades in prison. cbs's jonathan vigliotti reports. >> reporter: a dramatic twist in a long-running legal drama. >> i came to a place where i believe under the law resentencing is appropriate. >> reporter: as family members stood by in support, l.a.'s district attorney outlined the reasons for seeking the early release 35 years after they brutally murdered their parents. >> i believe that they have paid their debt to society and i do believe that the brothers were subjected to a tremendous amount

of dysfunction in the home and molestation. >> reporter: that new evidence, years of sexual, physical and emotional abuse, mostly excluded from the jury that conviced them of first degree murder, some of it emerging last year when roy rocelo of the boy menudo claimed he was raped by jose menendez. >> he had been forced to have sex with jose menendez as a child numerous times. >> reporter: mery produced that documentary and has met several times with the menendez brothers. she says for the first time in decades they now have a glimmer of hope. >> is the prison system about housing bodies or is the prison system about rehabilitation? these brothers have been rehabilitated. >> reporter: some prosecutors in the da's office oppose any release, adamant this was a

crime about money and not abuse. family members have been mostly united pleading for their freedom. >> this step gives us all hope that the truth will finally be heard and that lisle and eric can begin to heal from the trauma of their past. >> reporter: and at least one family member is against their release. the attorney for the brothers say they could be home before thanksgiving, though legal experts we've spoken with say that's unlikely. so what's next? the case will be handed over to a judge who will hold a hearing in about four weeks. jonathan vigliotti, bs news, los angeles. a 15-year-old boy is set to be arraigned today on charges of murdering his parents, three siblings and attempting to murder his sister at their home east of seattle. according to court documents the boy called 911 monday saying he was hiding in the bathroom and claiming his 13-year-old brother shot and killed everyone and then committed suicide, but around the same time a neighbor called 911 to say a younger sister who had been shot and injured ran to their home to report that it was actually her

15-year-old brother who shot the family. she played dead before escaping. she said her brother had recently gotten into trouble for failing school tests. breaking news out of the middle east where an israeli airstrike on a compound housing journalists in southern lebanon killed three tv staffers early today. that's according to lebanon state-run news agency. the israeli military hasn't commented on the strike. it finally looks like talks will resume on a cease-fire and hostage release deal. secretary of state antony blinken said top negotiators from the u.s., israel and qatar are expected to meet sunday in doha. the first high-level gathering in more than two months. egyptian and hamas leaders met in cairo yesterday but hamas's political representatives have shown no inclination to change its stance. and israel said it killed a hamas commander who worked for the u.n.rwa also known as unrwa. they released photos showing

them taking part in the october 7th massacre. he led the attack at a bomb shelter where party goers were hiding. four people including an american were taken hostage from the shelter. back here at home, mcdonald's says onions from a california-based produce company are the source of the e. coli outbreak. now other fast food restaurants are pulling onions from their menus. karin morfitt has the story. >> reporter: taylor farms, the supplier of fresh sliced onions to mcdonald's in the region removed yellow onions from its plant in colorado out of an abundance of caution even though the company says no traces of the bacteria have been found. health authorities continue to investigate other possible sources of contamination

including quarter pounder beef patties, but the fda says the onions are a likely culprit. there have been 49 cases and one death in ten states in the outbreak so far. >> within a month my son went from being aer and learning to walk to dying of respiratory failure. >> reporter: the e. coli in the mcdonald's outbreak is the same strain that killed darrin detwiler's son riley. >> consumers are too far treated astrazeneca nair ri's in the coal mine where we don't react until we have enough consumers harmed by a product. >> reporter: of those 49 reported cases, more than half are here in colorado. state health officials now urging anyone experiencing symptoms to report to their health care provider. karen morfitt, cbs news, boulder, colorado. president biden says he'll formally apologize today for the nation's role in forcing thousands of indigenous children

scheduled to return by october 7th but were delayed by weather. investigators solved the misystery of an old skull and a settlement in the maryland bridge collapse. those are some of the headlines on the morning newstand. the "baltimore sun" reports the singapore based owner and operator of the cargo ship that caused a deadly bridge collapse will pay more than $100 million to settle a federal lawsuit. part of the francis scott key bridge collapsed in march when the ship lost power and slammed into a support column. six construction workers were killed. the justice department argued improper maintenance and safety violations caused the ship to lose power. the settlement includes money for the cleanup but not to rebuild the bridge. the arizona republic says a man was arrested after mail-in ballots were damaged in a phoenix mailbox fire. police say the suspect was picked up on an unrelated warrant but while in custody he admitted setting the mailbox on fire. told investigators his actions were not politically motivated.

he said he did it because he wanted to be arrested. he was booked on suspicion of arson. firefighters forced the box open and put the fire out. no word yet on how many ballots were damaged. and t"the chicago tribune" sis a mysterious skull found in an illinois home was identified as an indiana teenager who died in 1866. a man found the skull in a wall while he was renovating his house in batavia in 1978 but it wasn't until recent dna tests that the coroner's office was able to put a name to it. it turns out the skull belonged to 17-year-old esther granger who died in childbirth. the coroner says grave robbers may have dug up the body. ahead, cattle call. police are called in to track some run away animals. psoria. now with skyrizi, i'm all in with clearer skin. ♪ things are getting clearer ♪ (♪♪)

all right. five cows are still unaccounted for after getting loose following a tractor-trailer crash in a rural part of western new york on monday. new york state police released footage of people trying to wrangle one of the cows. the authorities say there are still teams of people looking to capture the remaining missing cows. a children's rogue recall and a multi-billion dollar fashion merger is blocked. here's karissa lawson with today's "moneywatch." wall street slid to a slip. the dow dropped 140 points, the nasdaq picked up 138 and the s&p gained 12. a federal court judge has blocked the proposed $8.5 billion merger between luxury bag makers and rivals tapestry

♪ the new york liberty celebrated their first wnba championship last night at the barclays center in brooklyn. hours earlier new york city honored the team with a particular kerr take parade through lower manhattan. they won in overtime sunday to one the title. a star studded world series between the new york yankees and the los angeles dodgers gets underway tonight in l.a. final preparations are being put on dodgers stadium yesterday as the teams practiced and answered reporters' questions on media day. it will be the 12th time the dodgers and yankees have met in the world series. it will also be the first world series for the team's two biggest stars, aaron judge and shohei ohtani. >> it's an incredible feeling. it's everything leading up to it, you know, having two historic franchises like this going at it again. what a better stage.
