spices. it is still affordable. >> reporter: if you want to travel to the best food city in the country you may not go far at all. it might be a b.a.r.t stop away. if flying on a plane makes you feel relaxed under the sea. the california airport where you can really chill out. ♪. from kpix, this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. hi, i'm sara donchey. it is hard enough for businesses to deal with break ins. as we reported here, sometimes that happens at the same spot over and over again. very frustrating. now, local business owners are finding out the hard way that some thieves are using much more destructive tactics than smashing a window or kicking down a door. over the past 48 hours we seen suspects ramming cars into the store fronts of multiple businesses across the bay area. one of them a sneaker store in daly city. even though the thieves did not get inside to

steal anything the owner is stuck with thousands of dollars in damage. dennis, who owns locker sf on mission street gave us this surveillance video from early monday morning. one of the cars reportedly slammed into the iron gates. daly city police spotted the group as it was happening and before they could get inside of the store they took off. the owner says even though they did not steal a single thing he is stuck with 15,000 damage to fix the gates and building. the owner told us the police have been patrolling his boarded up store but he is afraid the suspects will come back and finish the job. similar incident happened 30 minutes earlier in union square. a lexus smashed into the louie vaton store. in front of the same store mayor breed said she wants to put ballards and planter boxes to keep it

from happening again. >> what we want are these planters and these ballards to blend in and not obstruct the ability of people to move down the sidewalk. we just want them to prevent vehicles from ramming into these businesses in order to rob them. >> reporter: the mayor said the union square alliance can use a permit to cover the whole district to put them up. across the bridge in oakland thieves got inside a tobacco shop after ramming into it this morning the owner of lucky 7 cigarettes shared the video of the moment a car went in and people ransacked. the owner said it was the third break in. she does not know how much longer she can go on like this. >> reporter: take a look at this video. at 3:00 this morning thieves used a car to ram through not one but two sets of security gates breaking

down the first gate, pulling the car forward to ram through the second gate with a group of thieves converging on the store as soon as the gates were down. stealing dozens of cartons of cigarettes worth tens of thousands of dollars. the owner got an alert from the security company and watched the whole thing on her phone. >> i saw someone hit the car, go into my store. very scared. >> reporter: she and her husband have owned the shop for 26 years. in the past three years they spent $100,000 repairing damage from previous break inand installing a second set of security gates. now they have to do it all over again. >> all of the crime it is out of control. >> jim is with the unity council as part of the response team to help business owners after something like this happens >> it is lawlessness, lack of conscious, i don't see how you are going to detour these guys. >> reporter: according to the

oakland police officers the union that represents the officers the reason more criminals are getting more brazen using more stolen vehicles is because of a lack of police staffing as well as the oakland police department's pursuit policy >> we show up to a scope of a a -- show up to a scene of a burglar we have to sit there and watch them. we can not go after them. it is embarrassing. >> only allowed to chase if they are involved in a violent offense. >> people from outside this county, outside of the city know they can come to oakland or alameda county and commit crime. no accountability. >> reporter: many business owners feel the only way they can protect themselveses is take matters into their own hands. this deli was broken in

using a stolen car. they put up concrete blocks along the sidewalk to prevent it from happening again. a few clocks over at quality tech automotive, thieves stole all of the equipment out of the shop in september using a stolen car to ram through the shop door. so, the owner installed two massive steel barriers to pull across the doors at night. >> now, they have to use a bulldozer. to that i can that thing out. we have to live like animals to protect ourselves. >> back at lucky 7 they don't know if they can stay in business after the latest break in. between the cost of the stolen products and repairs. >> does this what we want oakland to be? small businesses are the engine of the economy. oakland police say they arrested two suspects in connection with the burglary. we asked them if their pursuit policy may of stopped them from chasing other suspects that got away. they would not comment. looking live at san jose. they are playing out in

silicone valley. today, a new curveball. we will get to that in a second. the 16th street is up for grabs. covering part of san mateo and santa clara county. it has not always been friendly. accusing each of other using campaign funds. low's campaign said it was suspicious when lucarddo dropped out of a debate so the former mayor produced doctor papers to show he was sick and now the governor is picking sides. >> reporter: governor gavin newsom is weighing in on a bay area congressional race that is expect to be a nail biter come election day. the governor announced his endorsement of assembly member low for california 16th congressional district this week. releasing a statement in part saying we worked shoulder to shoulder on some of our state's most

pressing issues from protecting re productive right. his delivery for bay area families makes him exactly the kind of representative that cd-16 voter deserve in washington. low is facing former san jose mayor in the race. both men are democrats but low says he believes the governor's endorsement shows voters he is the right democrat for the job. that is why, again, san jose police officer association and knows the record of my opponent have chosen me. we reached out to the campaign for comment on the governor's endorsement of low. the campaign sent us this statement saying quote, sam is endorsed by the mercury news, san francisco chronicle, daily journal, daily post and

hundreds of local leaders. those that know assembly member low best support sam, too. such as revis, and our local assembly member mark berman. sam is focused on deliveriing solutions and not slogans. we went down to district 16 to see how voters are feeling about the governor weighing in on this race. we caught up with two locals in palo alto they think the endorsement could impact the outcomf the race. but for them they are keeping their support behind lucardo. >> we are still supporting him and it is a guy for the community. >> reporter: another woman told us she is not even too sure the governor's endorsement with sway anything. >> newsom is not wildly popular at the moment. i am not sure how people will react to that.

. the man who attack the husband of nancy pelosi will spend the rest of his life in prison. a jury trial sentenced him to life without parole. the life sentence on state charges is on top of the authority year sentence he got for his federal conviction. after today's sentencing depape's attorney spoke about his mental state. >> this is a man who lived a solitary life and got involved in a lot of online conspiracy theory and engagement. and giving his mental health condition it led him to sort of these entrappable beliefs which he expressed and fully believes in. >> paul pelosi released a letter describing how the attack effected him. he says his skull was crushed leaving him with a metal plate in his

head and daily migraines that are part of his life. he still has trouble using his left hand. he added being alone at night brings back memories. and his family said life without parole gives our pops a measure of legal justice. we hope a message to others that political violence against elected officials or their family members will not be tolerated, minimized or condoned. the murder trial for the man accused of murdering a tech tycoon, bob lee, is expected to continue in san francisco tomorrow. the high profile case was delayed when court clerks held a one day strike last thursday. momeni is accused of killing the cash app owner last year. cross examined for several days. he stabbed lee with a kitchen knife after an argument. the defense argued he killed lee in self-defense. we have been covering the case from the beginning 18 months ago. she will be back in the

[ laughter ] >> the vision of it. not necessarily the ingegz of ingesting it. >> now, increasing clouds tomorrow. showers move in tomorrow overnight. brief light rain chance, dry for halloween. slightest chance for the north bay. coastal drizzle. can not rule it out. a better chance of heavier, steadier rain, moving in late friday, continuing friday night, maybe even into early saturday. for the moment, all we have out there is high cloud cover. that has not really been efficient at holding the warmth to the ground. clear skies over head right now. not even a hint of fog. the temperatures have been in free fall since the sun went down. 46 degrees already in santa rosa. 49 in livermore. otherwise temperatures running in the middle to lower 50s. we will continue to drop with that vail of high clouds over head.

not efficient holding the warmth through the ground. holding all of the way into the 40s through most of the bay area with some of the coolest spots the usual locations, always more effective at collecting some of the cold dense air dropping around to 40 degrees. even down into the upper 30s. now, the cloud cover will thicken heading through the day tomorrow and the first arrival of the clouds will be the north bay. only in the middle 60s there. east of the oakland hills, a couple degrees warmer. taking longer for the clouds to fet there. the longest to get the clouds to arrive. a better chance of warming up to 70 degrees. the upshot is, 60s area wide. 3-6 degrees below what is normal for this time of the year. the temperatures are only part of the story. we will see the clouds yielding a chance of showers. not until the sun goes down tomorrow evening. this is the radar simulation through 8:00 in the evening. start to

see the showers moving into the north bay within 90 minutes after the sun goes down. starting to move into sonoma and marine counties. winding the clock. that is when we see a better chance of rain and golden gate. showers this time tomorrow in san francisco, oakland, the rain continuing to push farther and farther south. winding the clock to 2:00 a.m. light to occasional showers. the amounts will be modest out of the first rain event. 1/10th of an inch of rain. the last simulation takes us through 8:00 on thursday morning and the showers are gone. mostly going to be an overnight event. we have another rain chance heading our way heading into friday and friday night, adding them both together. and seeing half an inch for san jose and rain shadow spots. the best case, the west case for us. some spots around san francisco

and oakland with one inch rainfall. the weather prediction estimate is a little optimistic. even if you cut the numbers in half it would be a good wetting rainfall that is exactly what we need. after the system that moves through friday night and early saturday moves out we will see off shore winds kicking in. that would lead to an elevated fire threat but we should be able to avoid that because of the influence of the rain kind of giving moisture to the dry fire fuels around the bay area. the temperatures warm up after we get through the unsettled weather pattern. hover near average by monday and tuesday with highs in the lower 70s. temperatures will return to near average for the bay area. it means around the bay back in the upper half of the 60s. above 70 degrees by next week. the temperatures along the coast are going to return into the middle portion of the 60s. a couple rain chances, off shore winds, should not pose too much of a fire threat with the influence of that rain friday night into early saturday to mitigate the fire professional. it is something
