. now at 11:00. next thing i know i just heard this really awful screaming. >> a sleeping plan attacked on a flight out of the bay area. how the witnesses described the violent beating that seemed to come out of nowhere. >> there was blood splatter on the window shade. a horrible accident at fleet week caught on camera. how that moment may of changed a young woman's life forever. plus.. [ crowd chanting ] why dozens of hotel workers were taken away in handcuffs on one of the most famous streets

in the bay area and this bay area homeowner goes all out on his halloween haunted house. the biggest scare of all is probably the price tag. from kpix this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. hello, i'm sara donchey. leading up to the election we are always talking about division, what makes one person different from another person. but an event like san francisco's fleet week is designed to bring people together. celebrate our country. and that is exactly what 17-year-old mia was doing the day of october 14th. she just immigrated to the united states two days before and she was enjoying fleet week shows on the marina green with her family. but the family outing took a very bad turn when a navy parachutest landed right on top of them. as andrea nakano reports, mia's life may never be the same.

>> reporter: speck stators were watching parachutests drop out of the sky on to the landing zone. one of them strayed off course and hit a 17-year-old girl. today the family released the video she was taking at the time this all happened. you can see the parachutist try to signal something was happening. he landed on top of the 17-year-old. >> are you okay? >> at this point she can not watch the video, can not look at the news articles. but she does not blame the navy. she knows that this was not intentional and that nobody was targeting her. >> reporter: this video taken was released today by the family's attorney. in a statement mia says she immigrated to the u.s. just two days before the air show and was excited to explore the city. now this incident left her with serious injuries. her

pelvis was fractured and needed screwed to hold it together. she also faced criticism from some on social media who said she should of tried to move out of the way. >> it was really sad to me, seeing this 17-year-old girl essentially being blamed when she was right where she was supposed to be, doing what she is supposed to be doing which is laying on the grass filming this amazing air show. >> reporter: she wants the navy and the city to take a look at the protocol. she is unable to do daily tasks without the help of her family. the family has not taken legal action yet, partly because they are still trying to figure out the extent of mia's injuries. >> up fortunately once you present a claim there is a deadline for when you can settle it or file the lawsuit. for us, we are not ready to present a settlement claim. that is why we want to get all of the information out there. get the video out there. so if

it takes another year for her to recover, the navy can still do the investigation. the city can do the investigation and make sure it does not happen again. >> mia mom suffered a concussion and a bruised arm. the family just wants to make sure their medical bills are taken care of and this does not happen to anyone else. >> tonight we are hearing from a woman who saw a bloody attack on a sleeping man on board a united flight that tookoff from sfo. she says she was sitting behind the victim was who deaf and nonverbal when another passenger randomly started punching him. the attacker was from florida and is facing federal charges. the flight took off from sfo on monday bound for dulles. according to united. 82 passengers and six crewmembers were on board. we talked to a passenger on the phone. she told us they were two hours into the flight when chaos broke out. >> i just laid down, stretched

out, you know, went to sleep. the next thing i knew i just heard this just really awful screaming. i open my eyes and there was this guy who was just pummeling the guy in the seat in front of me. >> the attacker was reportedly she only stopped when another passenger came up behind him and wrapped his arms around him in a bear hug. >> it was strange. as soon as he sort of embraced the assailant the assailant just went totally limp. he was not resisting, he walked a few rows forward, found an empty seat and sat down. it was like a switch got turned on and a switch got turned off. >> remember, that victim was nonverbal. she said the victim could only communicate with everyone by typing on the phone because there was no sign

language interpreter there. the attacker claims the victim assaulted him in the past which the victim denied. >> we realized in the aftermath that the victim is deaf and nonverbal. he just kept saying i have not done anything. i don't know this guy. i am innocent. he kept saying i am very scared in his text messages. he was bruised. he was bleeding, he had garbes gashes on his face and blood splatter on the window shade. >> the flight attendants talked to the attacker and the attacker did not have another outburst for the rest of the flight but she did not see the flight attendants restrain him. >> for the next two to three hours there was only a couple rows that separated the victim from the assailant. >> united gave a statement to cbs news that one passenger was restrained after becoming physically aggressive towards another customer on the flight. the flight landed safely and

was met by paramedics and law enforcement. court documents say everett chad nelson is charged with one count of assault on an aircraft. if convicted he could face a year behind bars. we were back in court today in san francisco as a man stands trial accused of killing cash app founder bob lee. they say momeni killed lee. the defense not disputing that momeni killed lee but saying it was an act of self-defense. we heard several days of testimony from momeni's sister. he described a drug-filled night and sexual assault. my husband was murdered she has mow right to make herself a victim in this when our family was the one that got murdered. she can go -- [beep] -- herself. >> the judge ended up barring lee's ex from court for the

raft of day on the day we interviewed her. when the jurors returned to court today they watched a key piece of evidence that made some of them gasp. lauren toms has been following every step of the trial. >> reporter: sara, up until now most witnessessed in of the courtroom talked about their experiences with bob lee and momeni leading up to the fatal stabbing. today for the first time jurors saw video footage of the stabbing itself. the video taken from 100 feet away from a residential area from the bay bridge. the resolution is low and grainy and the details remain inconclusive t. leaves open the question if jurors will side with the prosecution who says momeni intended to stab bob lee or will they side with the defense that maintains their client

acted in self-defense. >> you see him walking and then suddenly out right collapsing. the jury knows they are seeing the last moments of bob lee's life. incredibly powerful. >> reporter: attorney shanon duggan was inside of the courtroom. he is seen walking down the street holding his chest and looking at his phone as he flagged down a passing car. after the car passes he suddenly collapses. then, stumbles to get back up and search for help. images that prompted people in the courtroom to gasp and that bob's brother said were painful to relive. >> of course you can expect that hard to watch. and, i think the video speaks for itself of what happened that day. we look forward to justice being done >> that video was part of 50 minutes of surveillance footage showed to the jury that pro theyed a time line of events before and after the fatal stabbing. one grainy video

showed the stabbing itself. two figures can be spotted in a low corner of the image, one in light clothes identified as momeni and the other in dark clothes identified as bob lee. the figure in white can be seen advancing towards bob lee. still, duggan says all of there is up to interpretation by the jury >> if you take the defense question and interpretation that bob lee was circling momeni, that could establish that bob lee was more of the aggressor. if you take it from the prosecution's position, momeni was advancing on bob lee. so, it is an open question of how the stabbing occurred. >> reporter: now, we saw video footage immediately before and after the stabbing of momeni driving his white bmw sedan. on the way there he was driving with bob lee. he was abiding by all traffic laws and driving

normally. but after the stabbing, momeni was seen running a red light and driving erratically as he made his way back across the bay bridge to his apartment. now, these are details, shanon says, prosecutors may use to prove guilt. lauren toms has been covering the case from the beginning, 18 months ago. she will be back in court tomorrow. you can find all of our coverage on our website. a lot of people will spend time outside tomorrow and tomorrow night and when you got face paint and a wig rain can be an inconvenience. we figured we would check in with paul heggen for a halloween forecast >> looking good. the showers will not last longer than tonight. let's take a look at first alert doppler. here is a look at the shower activity impressive on the radar scan. a lot of there is evaporating on the way down. we added up a couple hundreds. now making its way across san francisco and into the bay and the oakland hills, making its way across the bay area quickly heading

through the rest of tonight and gone tomorrow morning, long gone by trick or treat forecast. the trick or treat forecast is looking pretty good. the temperatures for the early crowd in the lower 60s. dipping down into the 50s heading through tomorrow evening. the moderating influence of the bay keeps the temperatures in the middle to upper 50s. not as cool. inland, concord, starting off in the middle 60s before the sun goes down and dipping down into the upper 50s for the later crowds. a similar temperature trend as well. so, things are looking good, sara, for the trick or treat forecast heading through the day tomorrow. we will look at tonight's rain in more detail and track the rest of the rain around the corner on friday. >> all right, prepare your costume, i know you have one. the new effort to get the menendez brothers out of prison. the familiar case pleading to the governor himself. dozens of hotel workers were taken away in handcuffs on a busy san francisco street. this bay area haunted house

take a look at the doppler. scattered showers, light stuff, zoom in for a closer look. light showers falling over sonoma and marin county. napa county as well. showers making its way across the bay. showers falling over the bay right now at the moment. making its way in the east bay, crossing over in the oakland hills, concord, and making its way farther into the delta as l. all of the activity pushing across the region. it is a pretty meager rainmaker. not going to amount to much more than a few hundredths of an inch of rain. you got a map on the floor here. track this along with the next rainmaker. through the rest of tonight, the showers will diminish further in intensity. not very intense right now. falling apart more as they make the way to the south and east. they will be out of here pie the time the sun comes up. nothing to worry about. no left over puddles at

that point. plenty of sunshine, mixed with a couple clouds here and there. future cast holding on. i don't think it is a likely scenario heading through the day tomorrow. trick or treat time is looking fine. the temperatures cooling off, appropriately cool for halloween evening. going through friday, increasing clouds and the next batch of showers pushing into the north bay as the sun goes down on friday evening. similar timing to the rain event that is underway right now. this will be more substantial. you see the radar simulation is lit up to a greater degree. the rain showers will last longer. intense rain, san francisco, oakland, pushing down to the peninsula. this time friday evening extending into friday night. but, like the current very light rain event this one will move out as the sun comes up on saturday. the last of the showers should be out of here before sunrise, leaving us with a dry weekend in store for us both saturday and again on sunday. off shore winds are going to develop on sunday. how much rain are we talking about total in between the systems? this is the estimate from the

weather prediction center and keep in mind almost all of there would fall friday evening and friday night. they are saying close to half an inch of rain for san jose. that is on the optimistic side of things just over half an inch of rain. for many, inland, east bay, again, the system on friday will tap into quite a bit of moisture to hit the numbers. picking up half of this, that is a descent amount for late october and early november. we will be seeing closer to one inch of rainfall if the weather prediction iskt. as you go farther to the north, into the north bay that is where we see the higher rainfall amounts this year. again, even half of this will help counteract the off shore winds that will develop by sunday afternoon. quick check of tomorrow's high temperatures, they will number the 60s area wide. not a lot of variation here, running 4 or 5 degrees above average. looks like it will be a nice day and nice evening for all of the trick or treaters the temperatures will warm back up once the friday, friday night

year because they just love halloween that much. >> i would say when i was younger i did it because i liked scaring people. i was like i want to scare people. now it is more about the whole thing. it is the set up, the seeing the families going through. >> that set up is not for the faint of heart. steve, his wife, their two kids, start working on the haunted house in august. constructing an entire building next to their house. >> like 50 feet by like 24 feet. >> by day, steve works as an electrickest mater and the haunted house gives him a creative outlet for one of his passions, monsters >> i remember drawing them when i was young. went to a haunted house trick or treating when was little and it inspired me. so, and then, it just, kind of happens now.
