>> start the party, los angeles! >> the dodgers take the world series. an incredible game five comeback. the team heads home champions. the yankees go home empty-handed. first, trash talk on the campaign trail. donald trump seizing on president biden's garbage comment while kamala harris tries to distance herself as both candidates make their final push with only five days left until election day. good morning. i'm michael george. well, this presidential campaign is going to be a race to the finish, and both candidates are putting all their focus on the battleground states. today they head west. vice president kamala harris and former president donald trump will both stump in nevada and arizona, with trump also stopping in new mexico. cbs' jarred hill joins us from detroit, michigan, another battleground, where there's a push to get union voters to the polls. >> reporter: yeah, that's right.

so democrats' support of organized labor tends to work in their favor with union workers in places like detroit. but former president trump is seizing on a new opportunity to paint democrats as out of touch with everyday americans. in a branded garbage truck, former president trump grabbed on to a gaffe by president biden. >> i could tell you who the real garbage is. >> reporter: continuing the controversy over biden's comment while speaking to latino voters. >> the only garbage i see floating out there is his supporters. his -- his demonization is seen as unconscionable, and it's un-american. >> reporter: the president later clarified he was referring to the disparaging joke at a trump rally about puerto rico. >> i can assure you we're not garbage. >> reporter: at trump's green bay rally, former packers quarterback brett favre also played up the comments. further south in madison, vice president kamala harris brought her own star power with performances from mumford and sons and gracie abrams.

>> just like wisconsin's state motto tells us we will move forward. >> reporter: it was her third stop of the day after stumping through north carolina which trump also hit and pennsylvania. yesterday a judge there extend -- extended the deadline for mail-in voting in bucks county after former president trump filed a lawsuit over long lines and reports of voters being turned away. voters there now have until close of business tomorrow to apply for and receive a mail-in ballot. the midwest is home to hundreds of thousands of union workers which could be key in tight race -- races in swing states like wisconsin and michigan. angel sharpe has been knocking on doors in detroit for months. >> i might have knocked over at least 500. >> reporter: encouraging fellow members of the service employees international union to get out and vote. what do you hear from people about what they're hearing about the candidates? >> i tell you always look it up for yourself. >> reporter: both of the candidates are going to be back here in michigan before election day. you've got vice president harris coming on sunday.

former president trump back here tomorrow. michael? >> jarred hill in detroit. thanks. well, in addition to the white house, this election will determine which party controls the u.s. senate. democrats currently have a slim 51% to 49% majority in the upper chamber of congress. there are two closely watched senate races this year. one in texas where republican ted cruz is fighting to keep the seat he's held since 2013, and another in montana where democrat jon tester is fighting for his political life over a seat he's had for nearly two decades. cbs' omar villafranca is in texas, and janet shamlian is in montana. >> reporter: montana is a study in contrast this election season. peaceful vistas, clean mountain air, and then the airwaves. >> i'm jon tester. >> i'm tim -- >> reporter: campaign spending is unpress dented. -- unprecedented. currently more than $275 million. about $350 for each registered voter. >> i want this race to be about

montana. >> reporter: democrat jon tester is the three-term incumbent, a farmer and native montanan, the last statewide democrat in what's become a solidly red state. part of the reason he's trailing republican political newcomer tim sheehy, a businessman and military veteran. he's come under scrutiny accused of fabricating the story of a war injury. he maintains he was wounded in afghanistan. >> i want to see all our vets on your feet. thank you. thank you. >> reporter: thousands moved to montana during the pandemic, driving up housing prices and property taxes. thomas and heather dillworth run big sandy organics in senator tester's hometown. they supported him in the past but are now undecided. >> cost of living has gone up, housing, property taxes. >> absolutely. >> reporter: will that influence your vote? >> absolutely influences the vote. >> yes, definitely. >> this is surviving -- it's hard to think about anything else if your first concern is survival and paying rent and putting food on the table.

that has to be obviously a top concern. >> reporter: as voters go to the polls, the vistas are as majestic as ever amid a demographic landscape undeniably changed. >> reporter: i'm omar villafranca in brenham, texas, where the senate race between ted cruz and his challenger, congressman colin allred, is heating up with just days to go. no democrat has won statewide office here in 30 years, and tonight allred is within striking distance of upsetting cruz, bidding for his third term. >> ted cruz has shown for 12 years he's all about himself. >> reporter: allred, a former football player, has made gains amember of congress african americans and -- among african americans and hispanics across the state. >> health care is important to me and reproductive rights. >> reporter: texas has one of the strictest abortion bans in the country, and allred has seized on it. >> this abortion ban is ted cruz's abortion ban. >> reporter: campaigning in central texas, cruz called

of some defensive mistakes by the yankees to win 7-6. the dodgers scored five unearned runs in the fifth inning. first baseman freddie freeman was named series mvp. he hit home runs in each of the first four games and drove in a world series record tying 12 runs. breaking overnight, north korea is confirming that it test fired a new intercontinental ballistic missile. north korean state media says leader kim jong-un was at the launch site where he reportedly said his country needs to strengthen its nuclear force. south korea says it may be a new more agile weapon that could target the u.s. mainland. the u.s. condemned the test. japan says the nearly 1.5-hour flight was the longest north korean missile test so far. it comes as the pentagon said north korean troops wearing russian uniforms and carrying russian equipment are heading toward ukraine. u.s. officials are heading to the middle east amid growing optimism for a cease-fire in lebanon.

senior white house officials erik kurilla and amos hochstein are set to meet with israeli leader today. the end to the war calls for a two-month cease-fire during which israeli forces would withdraw from lebanon and hezbollah would end its armed presence along the southern border. the renewed optimism came after hezbollah indicated it was prepared to accept a deal regardless of whether a truce is reached in gaza beforehand. however be the new leader vowed yesterday to stick to the strategy of his predecessor. also in the middle east, cia director bill burns and centcom director erik kurilla. disaster in eastern spain. dozens are dead in the worst flooding to hit the country in years. and will the menendez brothers be home for christmas? the l.a. district attorney weighs in on the fate of the jailed murderers. es still feel gritty, rough, or tired?

almost all of those killed were in the eastern region of valencia. spain's national weather service said it rained more in eight hours in some places than it had in the proceeding 20 months. helicopters lifted people from their homes. muddy waters swept away cars, and neighborhoods were submerged. tragedy at niagara falls, and a new hearing is set for the menendez brothers. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "los angeles times" reports l.a. county district attorney george gascon says he supports the menendez brothers' bid for clemency after nearly 35 years in prison. a resentencing hearing is scheduled for december 11th. erik and lyle menendez are serving life terms for the 1989 shotgun murders of their parents. it would be up to california governor gavin newsom to grant clemency. gascon earlier called for the brothers to be resentenced after new evidence showing they were sexually abused by their father.

"the buffalo news" says a mother and her two children are believed to have gone over niagara falls. police say a 33-year-old woman climbed over a safety rail on luna island and intentionally stepped over over his 9-year-old son and 5-month-old daughter. police responded to the call in the park monday. their bodies have not been recovered. if you someone you know needs mental together hospital call or text 988. and "the oregonian" says a pig at a farm in oregon tested positive for bird flu. the first known transmission to a pig in the u.s. the usda says the farm's five pigs were tested after bird flu was detected in poultry last week. one pig tested positive. livestock and poultry share water and are housed together at the farm. now officials say it's not a commercial farm, and there's no risk to the nation's pork supply. ahead, mcdonalds' e. coli trouble grows.

general mills is bringing back a blast from the past. here's shanelle kaul with today's cbs "moneywatch." >> reporter: stocks slipped wednesday as traders braced for key inflation data coming out later this week. the dow lost 91 points. the nasdaq was down 104, and the s&p 500 lost 19 points. the number of e. coli cases tied to mcdonald's is rising. the food and drug administration now says 90 people across 13 states have fallen ill in the outbreak. that's up from 75 at the end of last week. five more people have also been hospitalized. federal officials say the outbreak is likely tied to raw onions on the quarter pounders and other items. a new federal gdp report shows the u.s. economy grew 2.8% last quarter. it's down slightly from the second quarter's growth of 3%. despite high interest rates, the growth was powered by consumer spending. and check out this throwback.
