turning into a battle of the sexes. kamala harris seizing on donald trump's controversial comments on women. >> i want to protect the women. -- women of our country. >> it actually is very offensive. >> the two candidates criss-crossing the country trying to lock down votes and close the gender gap with the election just four days away. good morning. i'm michael george. more than 65 million votes have already been cast either in person or by mail, and as the clock ticks down to election day, vice president kamala harris and former president donald trump are pulling out all the stops. yesterday was all about the southwest. today it's the midwest battleground states. both candidates will be in wisconsin with trump also planning to stop in michigan. we've got cbs' jarred hill in warren, michigan, about 20 miles outside detroit. he joins us now. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, michael. this is where former president

trump later on today will rally supporters as you mentioned just north of detroit, michigan, a state that's an incredible battleground. it went for former president trump in 2016. for president biden in 2020. still incredibly close then, incredibly close now, as a war of words is being waged on the campaign trail. in western battlegrounds thursday both candidates zeroed in on women voters. ♪ in phoenix, vice president kamala harris seized on comments made by former president trump when he said he's going to protect women from migrants whether they like it or not. >> he does not believe women should have the agency and authority to make decisions about their own bodies. >> he called you garbage. >> reporter: trump tried to keep attention on president biden's comments from earlier in the week seemingly calling a trump supporter's remark garbage. >> we're not garbage. we're not trash.

weir -- we are the american people. >> reporter: today the focus turns to the midwest in states like here in michigan where arab and muslim americans make up a sizable voting block that traditionally votes democrat, they could potentially pull away from both parties. >> they feel like they cannot vote for harris, nor can they vote for trump because there is no lesser than two evils. >> reporter: the executive director of the michigan chapter of the council on american islamic receptions known as care -- relations gun known as care say members of his community feel caught between a rock and a hard place. not happy about trump's rhetoric on muslims and not satisfied with the biden-harris administration's handling of the israel-hamas war. the war in gaza isn't just a far away issue finish a lot of folks -- for a lot of folks in your community. it is hitting home. >> the issue in gaza is not a foreign policy issue to people here. we have a large amount of people in our community who are palestinian americans. >> reporter: he says many have lost family members in gaza, shaping how they view this election. and during the democratic primary earlier this year in

michigan, about 100,000 people voted uncommitted, a signal to president biden at the time then that they were unpleased with the white house's handling of that war in gaza. now the director of care said he's not expecting the same numbers this time around, but he does believe the community wants to send a message to both parties that they should be listened to. back to you. >> jarred hill in michigan. thanks. control of the house of representatives is also a tossup. right now republicans hold a slim majority, 220-212. a few dozen tight races spread across america will decide when party will boost or slow down a harris or trump presidency. cbs' scott macfarlane has a look at some of the pivotal races in unlikely places. >> reporter: the political colors could be changing along the hudson river in new york, too. u.s. house speaker mike johnson campaigned for new york republicans about an hour north of new york city. >> the majority for the house runs through new york and california.

>> reporter: trying to salvage his perilous eight-seat house majority. all 435 u.s. house seats are up for election next week, but cbs news estimates only a few dozen are considered competitive. and you can see nearly a third of those are concentrated in california and new york. >> it's almost unheard of to see tv ads for congressional races because it doesn't make a lot of sense. you're seeing it because it's so much money. >> reporter: court orders forced a redrawing of unconditional congressional maps in new york setting up a half dozen blockbuster multimillion dollar races. in new york it's democrats talking about the border. >> i will work with anyone from any party to secure our southern border. >> reporter: and republicans talking ivf -- >> i believe health decisions should be made between a woman and her doctor. >> reporter: a mirror image in california including outside of los angeles where derrick tran is one of five democratic challengers trying to win battleground seats held by republicans. >> the fact that a daughter of california is going to be the next president of the united

occupied palestinian territory believe a second trump presidency would be good for israel. >> we have a nice university at the end of the road. >> reporter: one of them is tamar marshall. >> the former administration had a stronger bond between the u.s. and israel. now the bond is more questionable. it's not -- not clear are you with us, are you with us until a certain line? >> reporter: in a major shift in u.s. policy, the first trump administration declared that israeli settlements were not illegal under international law. >> and our alliance with the state of israel has never, ever been stronger than it is today. [ applause ] >> reporter: with israel now at war in gaza and in lebanon and led by the most right-wing government in its modern history, a recent poll here found that 66% of israelis would prefer donald trump to win the election, only 17% prefer kamala harris.

does donald trump understand the middle east do you think? >> no. he's a very transactional man. >> reporter: elon pinkus is a former adviser to four israeli foreign ministers who tried to negotiate peace with the palestinians. he told us trump's isolationist america-first approach is dangerous, making kamala harris a better choice. >> her understanding of america's global responsibilities and commitment is different qualitatively different than that of donald trump. that doesn't mean he's not a friend of israel. it just means that in the long run i'd rather as an israeli have her as president. >> reporter: despite months of diplomacy, the u.s. has so far been unable to broker a cease-fire and hostage deal to end the israel-hamas war. donald trump said in august that he told israel's prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, to, quote, get this over with. holly williams, cbs news, tel aviv, israel. a pennsylvania judge

valencia. crews are searching for bodies in damaged homes and hundreds of stranded vehicles that were washed away. cars are piled on top of one another in communities throughout the region. an unknown number of people are still missing. new details about the suspect accused of shooting a jewish man, and a twist in the death of a camper. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "billings gazette" says the suspect in the murder of a camper in montana is in custody. daren abbey was arrested on an unrelated charge. the cbs affiliate in butte reports that while he was being questioned, abbey confessed to killing dustin kjersem. the victim was found dead in his tent last month. it was initially reported as a bear attack. authorities say abbey said he was looking for a place to camp when kjersem saw him and offered him a beer. he later killed the camper. there's no known connection between the two and no word on a motive.

the "chicago tribune" reports hate crime and terrorism charges were added against a man accused of shooting and wounding an orthodox jewish man. officials say the victim was walking to synagogue last saturday when he was shot in the shoulder. sidi mohamed abdallahi was arrested after he was shot and wounded during a shootout with responding officers. on monday he was charged with several crimes including attempted murder. police say evidence was found on his phone indicating he planned the shooting and specifically targeted jewish people. and "usa today" says a u.s. army specialist is facing a murder charge in the killing of a fellow soldier whose body was found in a dumpster on a missouri army base. 2-year-old sergeant sarah roque was reported missing last month after failing to show up for duty at fort leonardwood. her body was found later in a trash bin. specialist wooster rancy was charged with murder and obstructing justice. officials have not released any details about how the victim was
