hours of the final campaign day. the presidential candidates zero in on the battleground states and undecided voters. >> your country is under a siege. we have criminals of all variety, murderers, drug dealers. we have some of the worst terrorists in the world in our country right now. >> we have an opportunity in this election to finally turn the page on a decade of politics driven by fear and division. >> their radically different messages in the last dash to the finish line. good morning, i'm michael george. we'll get to the election in a minute, but first some breaking news. legendary music producer quincy jones has died. his publicist said jones died last night at a home in los angeles surrounded by his family. jones was one of the first black executives to make it big in hollywood. he collaborated with hundreds of

artists including frank sinatra, ella fitzgerald, and ray charles. jones wrote prize-winning film and television scores and produced michael jackson's iconic album "thriller." he also oversaw the all-star recording of "we are the world" in 1985. quincy jones was 91 years old. now to the race for the white house. tomorrow is election day, and regardless of who wins, history will be made. america will either elect the first woman president or the first convicted felon. kamala harris is spending her final day in pennsylvania making five stops in the state whose 19 electoral votes could determine the outcome. donald trump also focusing on two of the same pennsylvania cities, reading and pittsburgh. but he's starting his day in north carolina and ending his campaign in michigan as he's done with his last two campaigns. security is being stepped up in washington, d.c., amid concerns of violence fueled by disinformation, similar to the january 6th attack on the u.s. capitol.
3:33 am
we have team coverage of the election. we start with cbs' jarred hill in the nation's capital. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. yeah, d.c. is definitely taking some precautions ahead of the election, but there weekend was pretty much business as usual in the capital. you had both campaigns criss-crossing the nation as they're trying to get in valuable last-minute facetime with battleground voters. one day until election day, and one more chance for former president donald trump and vice president kamala harris to make their pitch to voters. >> you ready? >> this is 1,000 times bigger than the super bowl. >> reporter: today trump will hit three battlegrounds -- north carolina, pennsylvania, and michigan. during a push last night in georgia, trump repeated his plan to put rfk jr. in charge of health policy. >> i said, bobby, you work on women's health -- >> reporter: earlier in pennsylvania, trump doubled down on unfounded doubts about the results of the election. and his final message is being overshadowed by this --

>> have this piece of glass here, but all we have really over here is the fake news, right? to get me, somebody would have to shoot through the fake news, and i don't mind that so much. >> reporter: in a statement the trump campaign said the remarks had nothing to do with the media being harmed. instead, that the former president was stating that the media was in danger. today harris is betting big in pennsylvania, reaching out to puerto rican voters in allentown and holding star-studded get out the vote concerts in pittsburgh and philadelphia that will be live streamed in coordination with events in other battlegrounds. >> we have the power to decide the fate of our nation. >> reporter: yesterday in michigan harris visited a black church and a barbershop and tried to appeal to the state's large arab american population at a rally in east lansing. >> i will do everything in my
3:35 am
power to end the war in gaza. >> reporter: all as the latest cbs news polls show razor thin margins separate the candidates in those seven states that will likely decide the results of the election. now as far as the final messages for the two campaigns, they're both leaning into some their polling strengths. harris focusing on unity, collaboration. former president trump really homing in on the economy as well as immigration. michael, back to you. >> jarred hill in washington, d.c. thanks. in a late shock in the presidential race, new polling has kamala harris ahead of donald trump in the red state of iowa. naomi ruchim joins us to break down the new numbers as early voting wraps up across the country. naomi? >> reporter: good morning. and we should keep in mind that this is relatively small poll and the vice president's lead is within the margin of error. it is quite significant because of how quickly the state has moved from a solid lead for former president trump to essentially a dead heat. a new poll has vice president
3:36 am
kamala harris ahead of former president donald trump in iowa, a typically red state which trump has won twice. >> this is the first time that we've had kamala harris in the lead. so that by itself was a shock. >> reporter: the "des moines register"/mediacom iowa poll of aout 800 voters has harris ahead 47% to 44%. trump had led the poll against biden by 18 points in june. and by four points against kamala harris in september. the late polling comes in the final days of early voting coast to coast in the hotly contested swing state of michigan. more than two million people have already voted early, with more than 800,000 voting in person. women are a crucial voting block for both candidates, and the stark division is glaring over reproductive rights in america. >> it's about health care. it's about people butting their nose into things that don't have anything to do with them.
3:37 am
>> i thought that trump was going to win it the second time, and that did not happen. this time, of course, that's where i'm going to be voting because that's where my values and my morals are going to be represented the best. >> reporter: but in other states early voting is lagging. in chicago, a strong turnout and long lines in the final weekend still had the city 300,000 ballots behind this point four years ago. in california where scientists point to a clear democratic victory in the presidential column, voters are procrastinating. largely due to state and local races and a long list of ballot measures to consider which could all make for a very hectic day at the polls on tuesday. the iowa polls shows older women and those who are politically independent are driving the late shift toward harris. trump won iowa in the last two presidential campaigns by more than eight points. michael? >> naomi ruchim in new york.
