kamala harris and donald trump wrap up their campaigns with the final pitch to battleground voters. >> we do not have to settle for weakness, incompetence, decline and decay. >> are we ready to vote? are we ready to win? >> the choice is now in the hands of you, the voters. ♪ good morning, i'm michael george. well, it's the final chapter in one of the most bewildering, unpredictable and consequential sagas in political history. the candidates have done their part. now, america, it's time to do yours. get out to vote for who you want as the 47th president of the united states. vice president kamala harris or former president donald trump. the first results are already in for a tiny new hampshire town that continued its midnight voting tradition. if it's any indication of what's to come, we could be in for a long election night. we have team coverage, naomi

ruchim is covering the added security, but we start with jarred hill who is at a polling location in alexandria, virginia. jarred, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, michael, polling places are going to be full of folks making their voices heard in an election that has proven to be unprecedented and a little unusual. last night, both candidates made their final pitch to the american people. an election day tradition, the tiny town of dixville notch, new hampshire with the first results of the 2024 race, the six voters split between former president donald trump and vice president kamala harris, in what's proving to be a razor thin election. in grand rapids, michigan -- >> are you better off now than you were four years ago. >> reporter: trump revisiting his final campaign stop from 2016 and 2020. have a last word with the late-night rally, after stumping through north carolina and

pennsylvania. >> as your president, i will fight for you every single day with every breath in my body. >> are you ready to make your voices heard? >> reporter: harris went all in on pennsylvania, closing out a multistop tour of the state with star-studded concert rallies in pittsburgh, then from the base of the famous rocky steps at the philadelphia art museum. >> i pledge to always put country above party and self. and to be a president for all americans. >> reporter: already more than 81 million americans have voted early this election, with states like georgia and north carolina shattering records. still a lot of folks say they plan to vote today. >> i wanted to do mine in person because i know it counts. >> i'm old school so i wanted to vote on the day of, as i normally do. >> reporter: trump is also expected to cast his ballot later today in florida. tonight he and running mate jd vance will watch the results come in at mar-a-lago. harris and her running mate tim

walz will be at d.c., at harris' alma mater howard university. and in their closing speeches, both of the candidates acknowledged just how close this race is, with former president donald trump already sowing doubt in the results. michael. >> jarred hill, in virginia, thanks. now, let's focus on the seven battleground states that could sway the presidential election. they stretch across four time zones from georgia, north carolina and pennsylvania in the east. to wisconsin and michigan in the upper midwest to arizona and nevada in the desert southwest. we have a team of correspondents covering the key issues in these crucial states. >> reporter: i'm skyler henry in raleigh, north carolina where the state board of elections says it shattered early voting records. it's a razor thin race here between trump and harris as nearly 4.5 million voters have already cast their ballots. north carolina is the only one out of the seven battleground states that trump won four years ago. and despite carrying it the last two cycles, he's rallied here

four times since saturday. after speaking with dozens of voter, the issues that kept coming up, the economy, immigration and reproductive rights. one registered republican we spoke to says, because of the president's reddic on those issues, she's choosing vice president harris. >> this year, i did a lot of democrats versus republican and i actually voted for a lot of women. >> reporter: i'm lilia luciano, in las vegas, where the campaigns are courting the critical latino vote which make up more than 20% of the state's electorate. >> we are a large latino population. >> reporter: that is congresswoman cortez masto, who says they moved the needle. >> latinos are powerful when they come out and vote, they're a third of our population. >> reporter: it's why the state's culinary union is knock on 9,000 doors for harris. are you seeing voters' minds change after you talk to them? >> absolutely. >> reporter: at a dia de los muertos taco fest in the state, still hurting from the pandemic

with some of the highest unemployment rates and fastest rising rents in the nation, we heard from first-time voters driven by trump's businessman appeal. >> latinos should be supporting trump. because he knows what he's doing. he does love latinos. i know everybody calls him racist. he's not racist. >> reporter: i'm jericka duncan in drought, this is where harris needs a strong turnout here in the county if she's going to win the state of michigan. key voting blocs, uaw workers, black men and arab-americans. anger over the administration's handling of the war in gaza has hollowed out support for many of the state's arab-american voters for the democratic party. harris also needs to do just as well as biden did in 2020 if not better with black men. former president trump has made some inroads with both groups, however, the uaw recently released internal polling data suggesting its members in battleground states are planning

to support harris over trump. >> our thank you to all our teams across the country. now, this election day, law enforcement agencies across the country are beefing up their protection to thwart any violence. the threats include domestic and international, in-person and on online. cbs' naomi ruchim joins us here in new york city with that story, naomi, good morning. >> reporter: michael, good morning. for those who didn't vote early or by mail and are braving the polls today, expect a lot more security than we saw four years ago. much of that will fall on state and local officials but the federal government is backing them up. bottom line, they don't want violence or another contested election. election day is here. and law enforcement is working to prevent another 2020 debacle from marring election integrity. in washington, d.c., businesses are boarding up. extra fencing has been set up

outside the white house and the vice president's home. and the fbi's election security command center is running around the clock. on the lookout for any and all potential security threats. >> those threats include criminal threats, such as threats to election workers. foreign maligned influence. cyberthreats, and acts of domestic violence. >> reporter: in the battleground state of pennsylvania, the philadelphia district attorney had this warning for anyone attempting to interfere with the voting process. >> anybody who thinks it's time to play militia, f around and find out. we do have the cuffs. we do have the jail cells. we do have the philly juries and we have the state prison. >> reporter: during the last presidential election, maricopa county became the center of election conspiracy theories about a, quote, stolen election, and state officials faced hecklers and threats. >> hopefully, 2024 will set a

different precedence. that maricopa county isn't in the spot light and respect to the process. >> reporter: with election day finally here, polling officials are working to reassure americans who plan to vote in person that they will be safe at the polls and their ballots will be counted. and across the nation, about 19 states or more, already have the national guard on standby or active. that's according to reuters. the fbi says they already have seen a few threats of cyber security issues, but that's relatively common. at this point, the goal is to keep americans, voters and candidates, physically safe and making sure they feel like their vote matters and is counted. michael. >> all right, naomi ruchim in new york, thanks. so, you may be wondering when we'll know the results of the election. as far as the battleground states polls in georgia and north carolina close relatively early and they count the vote quickly there. the georgia secretary of state said we should know the results

for 70% of votes cast in the state an hour after polls close. as for the so-called blue wall states, pennsylvania and wisconsin, they tend to count slower, because state laws prohibit preparing ballots to be counted until election day which slows down the count. but michigan has adopted new laws that allow preprocessing so we should get fairly quick results there after polls close. out west, in arizona and nevada polls close late and typically close. if it's close in either state, we could be waiting several days before we can project the winner. be sure to join us for realtime analysis and exclusive polling coverage begins at 4:00 p.m. eastern on the cbs news 24/7 streaming channel and 7:00 p.m. eastern on the cbs television network. and coming up, other news of the day, russia accused in a disturbing sabotage plot, allegedly involving sending

travis kelce is saying in a heated moment i chose to greet hate with hate and i just don't think that's a productive thing. election day deals and the boeing strike is over. here's shanelle kaul with today's "cbs moneywatch." stocks plunged monday as americans braced for a tight election day today. the dow lost 257 points. the nasdaq was down 59 and the s&p 500 lost 16 points. breaking overnight, boeing machinists voted to accept a new contract proposal, bringing an end to their seven-week strike. the deal includes a 38% raise over four years and higher company contributions to 401(k) plans. walgreens has agreed to pay $100 million to resolve a lawsuit over generic drug prices. the proposed class action suit accused the pharmacy chain of fraudulently overcharging customers who are buying generic drugs through private insurance, medicare or medicaid. walgreens says the company

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. elon musk can continue his $1 million a day voter giveaways through today. a pennsylvania judge made the decision after musk's lawyers called the winners paid spokespeople saying they're not chosen by chance. the district attorney called the giveaway a scam designed to try to influence the election. well, like the presidential race, several congressional contests are also neck and neck,

putting the balance of power in both the senate and house of representatives up for grabs. cbs' congressional correspondent scott macfarlane took a look at which race can tip one way or the other. so much is at stake not just for control of the white house but the u.s. senate. as we begin the evening, one-third of the senate is up for re-election. two-thirds keep their seats but the battlegrounds look very familiar, the same battlegrounds as we see in the presidential race, pennsylvania, michigan, arizona, nevada, they're competitive states for the presidential race, but also for the u.s. senate seats. and let's talk about the blue wall for a minute. in pennsylvania, three-term democrat bobby casey is trying to win a fourth term running against businessman dave mccormick who is trump-endorsed. tried to win the nomination in 2022, he has it in 2024. let's look at michigan, elissa slotkin and mike rogers. both represented the same area in the u.s. house. the lansing michigan, area, mike rogers around the turn of the
