levi strauss fortune and the nonprofit founder has never served in public office. the latest batch of election returns cemented lurie's lead this evening. there are still 143,000 ballots left to count. so far, though, he is winning 28% of the votes in the first round of voting breed had 25%. when you factor in ranked choice voting and eliminate the other candidates, lurie's -- up nearly 13 points from breed. our kelsi thorud was at city hall today as london breed conceded the race. >> reporter: well, it was a somber mood inside the mayor's office. you could tell it was a difficult speech for mayor breed to give. she officially conceded the 2024 mayoral race to daniel lurie and said she would work with his administration to create a smooth transition. standing in front of a gaggle of reporters, incumbent mayor london breed
1:41 am
conceded the 2024 mayoral race to daniel lurie. >> i called daniel lurie earlier today to congratulate him and made it very clear that my team and i stand ready to support him during his transition. >> reporter: breed called her six years in office the honor of her life. she was mayor during a tumultuous time for the city, taking over after the death of mayor ed lee, then navigating the city through the covid pandemic. >> and i'm really proud of where we are as a city, that we have one of the lowest crime rates in over a decade, that we helped save lives during covid, and that finally with all of the things that we've done, we've built up the infrastructure to move san francisco forward. >> reporter: but it was the post-pandemic recovery, which many san franciscans criticized as being too slow that led to a dozen challengers entering the race to take breed's seat. throughout the campaign, daniel lurie targeted the mayor, saying she failed to manager
1:42 am
the city effectively. mayor breed accused lurie of trying to buy the mayor's office as he poured millions of his own money into his campaign. i asked the mayor now that lurie won if she still believed he bought the seat. >> i will just say that the campaign has to be behind us, and we need to move forward as a city. we can't look backwards. the voters of san francisco have made their decision, and i as a mayor of san francisco honor the decisions they made. >> reporter: the mayor says she will now focus on creating a smooth transition for lurie's team to come in. she says she will continue to govern for the last few months of her administration. >> now is a time for us to really focus on moving our city forward. there's a lot of work that still needs to be done. i'm feeling very hopeful and optimistic because i laid the groundwork for this work to continue, and again, this --

this office is bigger than one person. >> reporter: now, the mayor did not say what she plans to do once she leaves office. we are expecting to hear from daniel lurie tomorrow when he will address the city for the first time as mayor elect. >> so here's how we got here. breed became acting mayor in december 2017 when mayor ed lee died of a heart attack in the middle of the night. >> i ask for your patience and i ask for your support and i ask for your prayers. do solemnly swear. >> montes later, voters picked her to lead the city in a special elex. she was at the helm for the city's covid lockdown in 2020, handling shelter in place orders and business shutdowns. when gun violence surged and open air drug markets exploded in the tenderloin, breed vowed to crack down in this off-the-cuff moment. >> when we take the steps to be
1:44 am
more aggressive with law enforcement and less tolerant of all the bull [ bleep ] that has destroyed our city. >> and over the past four year, one thing has been constant. she's had to grapple with the city's image problem . many of which have gotten national attention, and now breed is on her way out so. we asked usf professor of politics james taylor about breed's exit and lurie's win and what it means san francisco voters are looking for. >> daniel lurie, given his background, given levi's label, is going to do everything he can to draw business to downtown san francisco. i'm sure the chamber of commerce is somewhere having a big celebration tonight because the opportunities are open to development and to more business and if daniel lurie reflects the family business, then there's great potential

in a san francisco courtroom attorneys are trying to prove their client nima momeni had no reason to kill cashapp founder bob lee other than self-defense. they hoped a witness on the stand today could do just that. lauren toms has the details. >> reporter: jurors heard testimony of a friend of nima momeni's sister as she shared drugs with an alleged drug deal. her testimony providing deeper context into an alleged sexual assault at the hands of that drug dealer, which could have been the motive for the stabbing of bob lee. a friend of kazar told jurors she didn't witness any inappropriate conduct between a man kazar describes as a drug dealer and kazar herself. it's
1:47 am
insight that could sow down the prosecutor's theory. they say momeni attacked bob lee in a fit of rage after he believed lee introduced his sister to the alleged drug dealer she says sexually assaulted her. >> it shines a light on the lack of a motive in this case. because right now this doesn't seem to be much of a motive other than bo, the dj's testimony, about nima momeni in this call. >> reporter: she also said when nima came to pick up his sister that he seemed calm and did not ask about bob lee. >> it's coming down to his demeanor and whether he was calm trying to find out what happened versus volatile and flying off the handle. and her testimony today backed the theory that he was calm. >> reporter: telling the jury she did not know who lee was and that he did not come up in conversations with nima earlier in the night. a key detail that

could sow doubt in the theory that nima momeni had motive to attack bob lee. now, earlier in the day we heard testimony from a dna expert called by the defense who shed some doubt into the dna testing done on the knife used in the stabbing. but he maintained earlier testimony that rubber is a poor surface to pull fingerprints off. all of this setting up testimony from the defendant himself, nima momeni, which we can expect next week. >> follow every step of the momeni trial, go to kpix.com. for two and a half years now, people living in ukraine have been under the constant threat of war, air strikes, bombings, ground invasion, death everywhere. thousands have been killed, many, many have lost everything they own. and this ukrainian family decided to move across the world and set their sights on meant hill. a few months later

plumbers were working in. >> it was dark, you can see, and this also, you see, it's black. this is all black you see, all black, because there was black smoke. >> reporter: she, her husband, and two children moved from war-torn ukraine to the bay area about eight months ago, only to have tragedy strike. >> the entrance i had one plant that i also took from -- to the usa, when they moved to usa with us. so i think that it's not alive, because it was very hot. >> reporter: katerina is grateful her children were playing outside when the fire broke out, but now the question remains, what next? >> in some documents on top, i can see the fire touched, but they are safe. the most important thing. >> reporter: they've come to call the viking park apartments community their family. >> here you go. this is from a whole bunch -- these are

catherine depalma: in my lifetime, i did not come to know the lord until i was 43 years old, so i had an entire childhood and adulthood apart from the lord, knowing of god, but not knowing christ, not having a relationship with jesus. there's a lesson that i learned from dr. charles stanley. we think something's too small to bother asking god about, but every little detail of your life you should be checking with him on. so, don't only pray in the dark times, but pray when things are going good. pray to think him, pray to worship him. southern california's

mountain fire in ventura county has absolutely exploded to more than 30 square miles. think about how big that is. 132 structures have burned to the ground. officials say most of those were homes. at least ten people have been hurt. tonight it is only 5% contained, but firefighters are hoping conditions are about to change for the better. reporter gio has more. >> reporter: stretches of roads but no active flames seen across the mountain passes near santa paula and moor park tonight. still, the fight against the mountain fire continues as we elearn more about its devastation. late thursday night ventura county leaders released the first damage report, 132 homes destroyed, 88 damaged. a shocking loss. >> earlier today i had the opportunity to see tim pact firsthand and speak to homeowners who have lost everything with the exception of their lives. the devastation is absolutely heartbreaking, and our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to all those impacted. >> reporter: the sheriff warning looters to stay away. >> we have deputies heavily i patrolling the areas that have
1:56 am
been evacuated. we will not tolerate looting of any kind. >> reporter: fire crews are making progress as the santa anas are dying down. the mountain fire has burned acres and crews have reached 5% containment. they'll fly again tonight. >> tonight you'll hear and you'll see much light last night we're going to fly all of our heavy helicopters again tonight. that's a very unique opportunity we have here in ventura county. >> reporter: residents whose homes survived cannot return yet. crews are checking gas and electric lines to make sure it's safe. >> horrible. i mean, in many ways, the worst case scenario for people down there. you know, we here in northern california know all too well what that is like, unfortunately, but our hearts go out to everybody down there. >> we were relatively lucky there were a couple small fires during this last red flag warning. crews able to get those under control quickly. ventura county, obviously, not as lucky. the winds are dying down, some good news. let's take a look. the reason the

winds are dying down, the offshore winds, kind of the squeeze being put on the atmosphere is lessening as the storm system that was squeezing up against this big hill over the coast, that's moving farther and farther away. our focus shiftses from the high fire danger and an offshore wind event to potential for showers as we head through the seven-day forecast. specifically sound night into monday. a lot of uncertainty. the two main forecast models we rely on when something is more than three days out, more than 72 hours, the american model, the european model, they're saying vastly different things. they agree the first storm system that's going to approach on saturday is going to miss us to the north. maybe a sprinkle in north bay saturday afternoon. i don't think that's likely either. but here's where they really show the differences as we go through sunday night into early monday morning. that american model keeps most of the moisture to the north. european model brings showers in before the sun comes up on monday with widespread rain throughout the day monday while that american
1:58 am
model says a couple showers maybe for the north bay and along the coast, and that's going to be about it. they have been kind of demonstrating these differences on a consistent basis over the past 24 hours or so. eventually they're going to come into better agreement, but it's going to take another couple of days for us to really pin down the most likely scenario. if the european model's right, we pick up a half inch plus of rain in some locations. american model will be barely more than a trace. reality's probably in between. the most likely is 0.1 of an inch to 0.25 of an inch. there's good news in the long range data as well, especially from a fire weather perspective, adding moisture to fire fuels. both paint a wetter than normal scenario not just for the bay area and california but most of the western u.s. so we'll keep you updated as we head through the next couple of weeks closer and closer to thanksgiving. right now clear skies overhead, temperatures dropping off pretty quickly. it's down to 43 degrees right now in santa

rosa. upper 40s in livermore and in concord. still in the 50s for oik land, san francisco, and san jose. those numbers will continue to retreat as we head through the rest of tonight. let's take a look at the forecast lows. specifically i want to focus on the north bay. we've got some chilly numbers showing up in the north bay valleys. temperatures dipping down into the 30s. 36 degrees the petaluma to begin the day tomorrow. upper 30s on a widespread basis for healdsburg, santa rosa, san rafael, and napa as well. despite that chilly start we'll end up two to four degrees above normal, in the low 70s in the north bay. most inland locations in the low to mid-70s with a mix of 60s and low 70 s around the bay. mid-60s along the coast, which isn't as warm. it is still a little bit above average. into the mid-70s for the santa clara valley as well. temperatures drop back a little bit into the weekend. temperatures retreating to closer to normal levels for saturday and sunday. and then the coolest day will be when we have that pretty decent chance of showers sunday night into monday. and then temperatures kind of level off in the upper
2:00 am
60s inland. similar temperatures around the bay as well. dropping off with a good chance of showers monday. back up farther into the 60s tuesday, wednesday, and thursday. typical mid-november stuff. temperatures along the coast, one more day in the mid-60s. the fog is more of a factor early next week as well. showers sunday night and monday. we'll let you know if we need to adjust any timing for the potential of the data to change a little bit. >> we will adjust. paul, there is a story getting national attention right now involving some prime mates banding together to pull off a great escape. not quite this. we're not talking about the apes invading san francisco. >> i hope not. >> in the rise of the planet of the apes. it also has nothing to do with this, these clothed apes.
2:01 am
>> i would be concerned if it did. >> that formed their own society in the 1968 planet of the apes film. the monkey business in question is happening in south carolina. residents are being warned to lock their doors and their windows tonight after more than 40 monkeys escaped from a research facility. dave malakoff reports. >> reporter: the 43 monkeys made a break for it on wednesday, escaping from the alpha genesis research center in south carolina. >> the caretaker was doing her normal routine. she failed to secure the door, and the monkeys basically bolted through the opening. they're very social monkeys and travel in groups. when the first couple go out the door, the others tend to follow right along. >> reporter: the reason why they got out was literally monkey see, monkey do. >> absolutely. >> reporter: president and ceo greg says the monkeys, which are used for vaccine development, are hanging out in the woods near the facility. a bystander says he saw the
2:02 am
escape, although the video he recorded could not be verified by cbs news. >> i think they're having anned a ven schur. >> reporter: the fugitives are described as cat-sized adolescent females. >> you want it? >> reporter: i met a similar species on assignment in sri lanka. in a statement to cbs news, the cdc said the monkeys pose no threat to public health as long as people do not come in contact with them. >> hoping for a happy ending, that's the number one important thing to me. >> well, as of tonight all the monkeys are still at large. matt, that is a tough one to follow. hope they didn't -- when they head to tampa. and the red and gold star pass rusher has some history with the bucs qb. the sharks are turning their season around recently, and it sure helps to have your rook

all right, the niners are going to be doing some traveling. >> yes they are. >> and so are you. >> i'm going to put you on to something. the niners leave tomorrow. they have to get a pub sub. do you know what a pub sub is? >> i have no idea. no earthly idea. >> publix buffalo chicken

tender sub. if you know, you know. >> oh, from the grocery store. i do know. >> the greatest grocery store in the world. all right, i'll be there sunday. i'm hoping i had the same view vern had last time san francisco visited raven james stadium. >> reporter: ahoy mateys, aboard the famous pirate ship. >> the 49ers defense is going to try to keep those cannons from going off on sunday. baker mayfield leads the nfl in touchdown passes this season. nick bosa's familiar with this game. they go back to college when mayfield planted the sooners' flag at ohio state. bosa got payback in 2019. that's when the defense dominated mayfield on monday night football. >> screaming his name, like baker. baker, you good? >> you get your old friend baker back this week. any extra excitement when you get to line up against him? >> no, there's no animosity there at all. you got to like

an underdog story. he's walk-on. he was the number one pick but then had to change teams, and he's proved everybody wrong. so it'll be a challenge. after a very slow start to the season the sharks are one of the hottest teams in hockey right now. they are winners in four of their last five entering the night. they've got draymond green's attention. he was repping the teal sweater after the dubs win over the wizards earlier this week. draymond probably a good fighter on the ice. that was a macklin celebrini jersey he was wearing. the rookie esuperstar back in the lineup this weekend. didn't take long to make an impact. second period, celebrini capitalizes on the power play, ties up the game. first of two goals for the rook tonight. later in the period, wild up one on the power play. minnesota wins 5-2. sharks play at new jersey on sunday. i want to go back to football. there's a big time afc north matchup between the bengals and ravens. lots of points in the first meeting, same thing tonight. tied at

28-28, lamar jackson connects. bateman for lamar's fourth touchdown of the game. great throw, great catch by ja'marr chase. monster game for both of them. here's the big thing, though. zac taylor keeps the offense on the field. they're going to go for two in the win on the road. throws to his tight end mike, incomplete. the bengals wanted a call, and for good reason, likely a hold on the tight end and clear contact to burrow's face mask. now, toughed missed call in a crucial game for cincinnati. 128 yards, 4 touchdowns, three of those went to chase. he finished the night with 264 yards, rest in peace if you had to play him in fantasy. but it still wasn't enough as the ravens win 35-34. the bengals are now 4-6. here's the big point, buccaneers head coach todd bolles had that same choice to make monday night against the chiefs. he decided to kick and go to ot against patrick mahomes of all guys. guess who won? patrick mahomes.
2:09 am
i'm interested, if this comes around on sunday when the bucs play the 49er, does todd bolles have the same respect for brock purdy as patrick mahomes? duds he go i don't want purdy in overtime or do they play it out? >> purdy will have a thing or two to say about that. and i have a thing or two to say why joe burrow couldn't have done that when he was on my fantasy team. >> another classic mess up for sara donchey's fantasy team. >> it's abysmal. i'm the bottom of the lead. thank you.
