powerful winds fueling destructive wildfires in southern california. homes destroyed, and thousands forced to flee. we narrowly missed a tragedy. >> school shooting averted. a 13-year-old boy accused of showing up to school with a rifle inside a duffel bag. the missed warning signs and the eagle-eyed staffers who stopped him. and disturbing messages of hate. black students and adults across the country getting texts referencing slavery. the concerns and growing fear. good morning, i'm michael george. those stories in a minute. we're going to start with the trump transition now under way. the president-elect can add another battleground state to his win column with cbs news projecting him the winner of nevada. a state that's gone blue for the past four presidential elections. also donald trump named susie wiles his campaign manager to serve as his white house chief of staff. and president biden spoke to the

nation yesterday underscoring the integrity of the election and saying this will be a peaceful transfer of power. cbs' jarred hill is joining us from washington, d.c. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. and president biden also urged americans to bring down the temperature in that speech. as he said that he's leaving behind the, quote, strongest economy in the world as the country and his successor, president-elect trump, prepare for this transition. >> we accept the choice the country made. >> reporter: in his first public remarks since election day, president joe biden assured americans that there will be a peaceful transfer of power as his party grapples with major election losses. >> a defeat does not mean we are defeated. we're going to be okay. but we need to stay engaged. we need to keep going. >> reporter: democrats searching for answers have started pointing fingers. massachusetts senator seth moulton blamed biden for respect -- for

dropping out of the race too late. vermont senator bernie sanders told "the new york times" the party focused too much on identity politics. >> our party is going to have some hard conversations in the coming weeks and months. >> reporter: meanwhile president-elect trump's policy agenda as well as administration are starting to take shape as he looks to take office with a gop-controlled senate and possibly a republican house. >> america has given us an unprecedented and powerful mandate. >> reporter: on his agenda -- extending 2017 tax cuts, deregulation across federal agencies, and sweeping tariffs on imported goods. trump's longtime aide stephen miller is leading talks on how to use executive orders to execute trump's plan to deport more than 11 million undocumented immigrants. yesterday trump announced a historic pick to a key white house post. campaign manager susie wiles will serve as chief of staff, making her the first woman to ever hold the position.

all right. president biden has still about 70 days in office, and with a democrat-controlled senate. so what's the plan? the white house says top priorities are going to be judges, filling any vacancies on the federal bench, as well as surging aid to ukraine, something that is a question under a trump administration, and getting more aid and dollars to hurricane relief in parts of the south. michael, back to you. >> all right. jarred hill in washington, d.c. thanks. breaking overnight, israel says it's sending a rescue mission to amsterdam to evacuate israeli citizens after they were violently attacked. video on social media shows people being beaten by apparent pro-palestinian protesters after a soccer match between a dutch and israeli team. israeli prime minister netanyahu ordered two planes and medical and rescue times to amsterdam in coordination with dutch officials. israel's foreign minister said at least ten israeli citizens were injured.

57 have been arrested. the dutch prime minister said the anti-semitic attacks were completely unacceptable, and those responsible will be prosecuted. now to that raging wildfire that's forced some 10,000 people from their homes in southern california. the mountain fire between los angeles and santa barbara has scorched about 32 square miles, destroyed or damaged more than 200 structures, and is threatening thousands more. cbs' jonathan vigliotti is there. >> reporter: a nightmare in southern california, enduring its most extreme fire conditions in years. >> it remains dynamic and remains dangerous. >> reporter: in community after community, homes went up in flames. in the aftermath lay in ruins. >> it's just surreal. >> reporter: retired firefighters dana mcclorn and his wife janet lived in this camarillo home for 25 years. recently remodeled, newly landscaped. now a total loss. >> i don't know what we're going to do. i don't know what we're going to do.

>> reporter: across the street, the walkway to charlie o'dell's home is still intact. beyond the gate nothing's left. >> we just had flowers, roses, trees. just our dream home. >> reporter: to sees of families now battling that same awful feeling after several small fires started wednesday morning fueled by powerful winds that carried embers up to three miles, sparking new fires, exploding into a mega fire. these are blowtorch conditions. you have wind gusts reaching 80 miles per hour, the fire so hat it easily ripped through homes like this. among six in this neighborhood alone destroyed. wind gusts exceeding hurricane strength, the hillside looks like rivers of flames. water drops not even hitting the ground. no home in the fire's path stood a chance. >> these are all our friends, you know. and we're just so -- i mean, heartbroken for ourselves but for them, too. >> reporter: dozens of homes

like this one have been lost. and tonight thousands of people issued a mandatory evacuation worried about what they will return home to. meanwhile, governor gavin newsom has arrived to survey the damage. jonathan vigliotti, cbs news, ventura county, california. a 13-year-old boy is under arrest for allegedly trying to enter a wisconsin elementary school with a gun. police in kenosha say he arrived at the school yesterday with suspicious bags. when staff questioned him at the school's secure entryway, he ran into the neighborhood and was caught. authorities say he was armed with a rifle when he was arrested. police shared video they say they received yesterday showing the boy with a rifle at home. investigators say he also conducted multiple internet searches related to school shootings and shared videos and made comments to other students for weeks. >> this is something that should have been known. this is something that had been told to people, his growing intentions. we know there was internet searches, and all the red flags we would look for and expect

someone to report were there. >> police say the boy first tried to get into the school through several locked doors before heading to the secure front entrance. law enforcement agencies across the country are investigating racist text messages referencing slavery sent to black people in several states. >> greet, david. -- greeting could -- greeting, david. you've been selected to pick cotton at the nearest plantation in atlanta. be ready at 12:00 a.m. sharp with your belongings. >> that's a man in atlanta reading a message he received. the anonymous text using almost identical language were sent to men, women, and students including middle schoolers. some of the messages mention the incoming trump administration. >> i was pissed. to be honest. because i'm thinking that we already have this racial tension going on. this whole election has brought out different feelings in everybody. >> it was soul crushing to know

"the raleigh news and observer" reports two people were detained in shootings around interstate 40 in raleigh, north carolina. shots were fired into eight cars and four homes during rush hour this week. several people reported gunfire. one woman was shot in the leg while driving on the highway. there were no other reported injuries. investigators say they do not believe the shootings are incidents of road rage. new allegations in a convicted murderer trial. "the milwaukee journal sentinel" says a trial for a convicted murderer in "making a murderer" is claiming a detective's misconduct charge raises questions about the integrity of the case. steven avery is served a life sentence for the murder of teresa halbach in 2005. the documentary raised questions about whether law enforcement planted evidence in the case. this week a detective who worked on the case was charged in a separate case with misconduct in office for allegedly financial crimes. and "the san francisco chronicle" says levi strauss heir daniel lurie was elected as

the miracle from midfield. with wednesday's soccer match against notre dame tied 2-2 with seconds left. stanford's dylan hooper launched a shot from well behind the center line. it amazingly eluded the goalkeeper and went into the net with one second left giving stanford the win. >> oh! three people in argentina have been charged in connection with the death of former one direction boy band member liam payne. the 31-year-old died last month after he fell off a balcony at his hotel. one person who spent every day with him has been charged along with two others suspected of supplying payne with drugs. the federal reserve cuts its key interest rate, and the fda wants to pull a popular but ineffective cold medication from the market. here's carissa lawson with today's cbs "moneywatch". >> reporter: good news from the fed led to a calm day on wall street ending mostly in the green.

the dow fell by .59. the nasdaq picked up 285, and the s&p gained 44 points. the cost of borrowing and credit card interest rates are coming down. that's because the federal reserve cut interest rates by a quarter point following its larger half-point cut in september. the fed had predicted another rate cut next month and four more next year. with the economy now mostly solid and the uncertainty of the trump presidency, economists say further rate cuts may become less likely. nissan, japan's third largest automaker, says it's planning to slash 9,000 jobs and 20% of its car-making capacity due to a steep drop in sales. the company's ceo also says he will cut his salary in half. nissan blames its struggles on the rapidly changing market and growing demand of electric and hybrid vehicles. the u.s. food and drug administration has recommended removing a common ingredient found in many popular over-the-counter cold medicines

now's the time to save at ancestry. here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ okay, check this out. surveillance cameras capture a furry trick-or-treater helping himself to goodies left on a porch in avon, connecticut. we're told the bear got its sugar high, left the wrappers on the porch, and took off with a pumpkin. and from a hungry bear to a hunt for escaped monkeys. police in south carolina's low country are asking people to keep their doors and windows locked. workers are laying traps to catch dozens of primates that escaped from a research facility. cbs' dave malkoff reports. >> reporter: the 43 rhesus macaques made a break for it on wednesday, escaping from the alpha genesis primate research

center in south carolina. >> the caretaker was doing her normal routine, she failed to secure the doors, and the monkeys bolted through the opening. they're very social monkeys and travel in groups. when the first couple go out the door, the others follow along. >> reporter: the reason they got out was literally monkey see, monkey do. >> absolutely. >> reporter: president and ceo greg westergaard says the monkeys which are used for vaccine development are in the woods near the faciliti. a bystander says he saw the escape, although the video he recorded could not be verified by cbs news. >> i think they're having an adventure. >> reporter: the fugitive primates are described as cat-sized adolescent females. >> you want it? >> reporter: i met a similar species on assignment in sri lanka. in a statement to cbs news, the cdc said the monkeys pose no threat to public health as long as people do not come in contact with them. >> hoping for a happy ending. that's the important thing to me.
