return to the white house for the first time since leaving office as he begins picking the team for his new administration. raging infernos. wildfires burning from coast to coast including one that's turned deadly. and remembering judith jamison. transcendent dancer, acclaimed choreographer, and international star. good morning. i'm michael george. president-elect donald trump is filling in his team announcing a few key appointments as well as high-profile snubs. trump is set to meet with president joe biden in the oval office wednesday continuing a white house tradition that trump shunned four years ago when he lost the election. meanwhile, cbs news added arizona to trump's win column giving him a sweep of all seven battleground states. the final vote count, trump 312, vice president kamala harris 226. cbs' jarred hill has the latest developments. >> reporter: good morning.

and president-elect donald trump is looking to take full advantage of that so-called mandate filling one position in particular to oversee a major campaign promise. deporting 11 million undocumented immigrants, although allies believe that won't happen all at once. president-elect donald trump is huddling with his transition team in mar-a-lago, building his new administration. trump announced former i.c.e. director tom homan will be his border czar. and cbs news has learned gop senators marco rubio and bill hagerty, a staunch opponent of ukraine funding, are being considered for secretary of state. >> whatever role i hold going forward, it's going to be advancing the positions that president trump has articulated. >> reporter: trump announced two people who won't be included. former u.n. ambassador-turned primary rival nikki haley and former secretary of state mike pompeo. the president-elect is gearing up to meet at the white house on wednesday. a courtesy trump did not extend to biden after the 2020 election. >> mr. president? >> reporter: biden and the first lady were seen strolling near their home in delaware before

returning to washington today he and vice president kamala harris will attend ceremonies marking veterans day. meanwhile members of his party continue to grapple with last week's election losses. in an interview, former house speaker nancy pelosi pointed to biden's late exit from the race and his swift support of his vp. >> the president endorsed kamala harris immediately. that really made it almost impossible to have a primary at that time. if it had been much earlier it would have been different. >> reporter: this week new members of congress will be in washington for orientation with the senate flipping to gop control in january. the house still being determined. and president-elect donald trump is weighing in on the gop battle for senate leadership. he didn't throw his support behind anybody but said they should not approve any judges until he takes office. we know that that is a big priority for president biden white he's still in the white house and democrats still control the senate. >> thank you so much. firefighters are struggling

to gain the upper hand on those wildfires burning across the country, and the dry weather isn't helping the situation. several wildfires broke out across new york, new jersey, and pennsylvania this weekend, filling the skies with smoke and claiming at least one life. in california, fire crews are making progress against the massive mountain fire north of los angeles. cbs' elise preston is in the devastated city of camarillo. >> reporter: an unimaginable loss, the ferocious mountain fire in camarillo, california, sparing little in its 32-mile path. janice lindsay is one of the many homeowners who lost everything including her two cats. >> we had our hands on both of them at one point, and they broke free. i'm certain they didn't get out. >> reporter: while residents assess the damage, nearly 3,000 firefighters are mopping up hot spots as there's only 26% containment. in the east wildfires have

ignited in several states. in new york, a tragic closs. 18-year-old dariel vasquez, a state parks employee, died battling the jennings creek fire. that fire is also raging in new jersey. over 2,500 acres torched, 0% containment. dry conditions have made the garden state a tinderbox. the new jersey forest fire service has responded to more than 40 fires. >> not only is the fire burning on top of the ground, but it's burning under the ground. >> reporter: in pennsylvania the fire fought by air and by land. smoke from these fires harming the public. toxic air spreading through the region. back in camarillo, california -- >> wedding band -- >> reporter: time to start over. >> along with grief there's joy, and there's hopefulness. >> reporter: elise preston, cbs news, camarillo, california. overseas, the fighting is intensifying between ukraine and russia with both sides carrying out their largest drone attacks against each other since the start of the war. cbs' chris livesay reports.

>> reporter: the menacing buzz of an attack drone before it's blown out of the sky. all part of the biggest exchange of drones between russia and ukraine since russia's full-scale invasion in 2022. ukraine fired dozens into the skies over moscow, injuring a woman, officials said, and temporarily shutting down russia's biggest airport in the kremlin's only backyard. -- kremlin's own backyard. the same night, ukraine says russia fired a record 145 drones at cities like odesa, killing one and injuring dozens. with the help of north korean soldiers, russia has intensified its offensive in ukraine's east, but at a heavy cost. >> october was the worst casualty figures for russia so far. on average over 1,500 killed or wounded every single day. that is for tiny increments of land.

>> reporter: a pitched gun battle in ukraine's east where a ukrainian soldier wearing a helmet camera is hit. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu says he spoke with donald trump three times since tuesday's election, adding that they see eye to eye regarding the iranian threat. israeli president herzog will meet with president biden tomorrow. qatar is ending its role as a mediator in the talks between israel and hamas citing a lack of willingness from both sides to negotiate in good faith. the country will resume its role when the warring parties show a genuine intent to end the car. -- the war. qatar told hamas officials they were no longer to stay in the country but has not set a deadline for them to leave. coming up, a suspect is arrested in the deadly shooting at tuskegee university in alabama. what police found on him. and a dramatic rescue on camera. a toddler saved from a burning apartment building. bloop

2-year-old, second floor. >> volunteer firefighters in granbury, texas, rescued a 2-year-old boy from a burning apartment building. the boy's mother says she was able to bring her 4-year-old son outside yesterday, but smoke prevented her from reaching her other son's bedroom. within machines -- minutes firefighters arrived and thankfully pulled the boy to safety. he's being treated at a hospital. the cause of the fire still under investigation. why a fema worker in florida was fired, and a suspect is in custody in a weekend shooting. those are some of the headlines we're following on the "morning newsstand." "the montgomery advertiser" reports an alabama man was arrested in connection with a mass shooting during homecoming weekend at tuskegee university. i got shot in my back. and -- ended up getting hit three times. and i was on the ground, shot, for like 40 minutes until the paramedics could even get to me. >> authorities say jaquez myrick was arrested while leaving the scene and found with a handgun this had a machine gun conversion device. investigators say there was likely more than one shooter. classes at the historically black university are canceled today. the "sun sentinel" says a fema worker has been fired after directing other workers helping hurricane survivors to avoid homes with yard signs supporting donald trump. in a statement over the weekend, fema administrator deanne criswell called the incident reprehensible but didn't identify the worker or say where it happened. florida governor ron desantis says it happened in florida and called it targeted discrimination. he says the state will investigate. and cnn says 25 monkeys have been recovered after they

word about the stuck goat on oahu spread on social media last week. when the fire department and others said they couldn't do anything, the hikers jumped in. they climbed up, distracted the goat with apples and a drone, and grabbed it. took 45 minutes to bring the goat down, and it's doing well at an animal sanctuary. elderly, 47 years after a man lost his 1965 college graduation ring off the coast of barbados a diver found it, tracked down the man who it belonged to, and returned it. the diver was using a metal detector when he found the ring with the words "mcmaster university 1955" and the initials fmp on it. he contacted the canadian school and they found the owner, frederick morgan perigo. fmp, who received his long-lost ring a day before his 83rd birthday. the man says he lost the ring back in 1977 when he grabbed his son's hand after the boy was knocked over by a wave.

and here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ ♪ acclaimed dancer, choreographer, and artistic director of the alvin ailey american dance theater, judith jamison, has died. her spokesperson saying she died on saturday in new york after a brief illness. jamison began with the alvin ailey american dance theater in 1965 when very few black dancers took part in ballet. she became a muse for alvin ailey starring in his signature dances "revelations" and "cry." she took over his company after his death in 1989.

jamison was awarded the kennedy center honors in 1999. judith jamison was 81. britain's princess catherine marking a return to royal duties this weekend. the princess of wales joined the royal family led by king charles for remembrance sunday which honors those who died in war. both royals giving signs that the family is returning to normal after a year that saw them sidelined by cancer. queen camilla who would normally be present was not there as she's recovering from a chest infection. well, queen bey is going ivy league. yale university is getting into formation and offering a new course titled "beyonce makes history: black radical tradition, theory, and politics through music." the aim is to use beyonce's work as a lens through which to examine black intellectual thought and activism. the first course will be offered next semester.
