mornings." terrifying scares in the air. haitian gangs opened fire on commercial passenger jets. bullets striking at least two american planes. the airlines now canceling flights. but, first, trump's new team. the president-elect is quickly filling key positions for his signaling his policies and are - priorities. good morning, i'm michael george. while donald trump is building the new governing team for his second term, his pick for secretary of state is expected to go to florida senator marco rubio joining the list of other trump loyalists already selected to help the president-elect fulfill his goals on national security, diplomacy and immigration. naomi ruchim has the latest. >> good morning to you. as expected, all of these picks are folks who have been mostly loyal to president-elect donald trump though the selection of marco rubio does come after some years of name-calling back and forth.

the appointments are only the beginning of what some believe could be the most conservative west wing in recent memory. two sources tell cbs news that president-elect donald trump is expected to tap two florida lawmakers for key cabinet positions. senator marco rubio for secretary of state and congressman mike waltz for national security adviser. >> donald trump is not steeped in policy. >> rubio sparred with trump during the 2016 gop primaries before dropping out and eventually backing him up through this year's campaign. >> we are patriots who love america. >> reporter: waltz is a decorated exgreen beret. yesterday trump also announced house republican conference chair elise stefanik of new york to be his next ambassador to the united nations, an organization she has criticized in the past. >> we know that the u.n. is a den of anti-semitism.

>> reporter: meanwhile, former new york gop congressman lee zeldin was chosen as the epa administrator. he launched an unsuccessful run for governor in 2022. >> i do believe that at some point there will be a re-entry to government. >> reporter: this as progressive house democrats are voicing concerns over trump's pick of stephen miller for deputy chief of staff and former i.c.e. director tom homan as border czar. >> i think we're going to continue to see a number of people that have disturbing histories being appointed. >> reporter: and they're vowing to fight his plans for a mass deportation program. in florida the governor appoints a temporary replacement for open u.s. senate seats, meaning governor ron desantis would get to pick marco rubio's successor, assuming the nomination goes through. many of the new cabinet picks are sitting members of congress, which has sparked some concern

over what will be a narrow balance of power. this all comes as new members of congress begin their orientation in washington today, michael. so things are moving quickly. >> we'll be watching closely. naomi ruchim. thanks. speaking of the new congress. breaking news overnight. arizona has elected its first latino u.s. senator. in what ended up being a close race, democrat reuben gallego defeated former news anchor, republican kari lake. gallego's win means the gop will have 53 seats in the 100 member senate. also breaking overnight, we're learning a second american passenger jet was hit by gunfire in haiti. jetblue said it discovered a bullet hole in the exterior flight 935 after it landed safely at new york's jfk airport yesterday. that follows the frightening incident on board a spirit airlines jet that was struck while in the air. the violence prompting several

airlines to suspend flights to the caribbean nation. cbs's kris van cleave has details. >> sad. very sad. >> reporter: video appears to show where gunfire struck the cabin of spirit airlines flight 951 as it was about to land at haiti's port-au-prince airport with 48 on board. >> everything was normal and then the crash behind us was quite prominent. >> reporter: a flight attendant suffered minor injuries from flying debris according to the union. the airbus 8320 was over a neighborhood when it began to quickly climb diverting to the dominican republic. >> the pilot hit the gas and we took off and we accelerated. there were quite a few g forces kind of pushing into your seat. >> reporter: here you can see what look like bullet holes in the fuselage. >> the decision to get out of there, i think that was a very

smart decision. >> should this be a wake-up call? >> they need to understand these sorts of things can happen in some of these countries where we have a political unrest, we have violence. >> reporter: the u.s. embassy in haiti said they are aware of gang-led violence. spirit said the safety of our guests and team members is our top priority. the airline has suspended service to haiti. airline officials say all of the passengers on board that spirit flight are okay and are unhurt. kris van cleave, cbs news, washington. wildfires continue to burn in the eastern and western u.s. rain did little to slow the jennings creek fire on the border of new york and new jersey. it's burned about 5,000 acres since it started friday. fire is expected to grow amid dry conditions and strong winds today. a new york state parks worker

battling the fire was killed over the weekend when a tree fell on him. other fires are also burning throughout the northeast. meanwhile, firefighters continue to make progress against a wind driven fire northwest of los angeles. the mountain fire has burned more than 20,000 acres. it's forced thousands of people to flee their homes. has destroyed more than 170 structures. an indiana man faces up to 130 years in prison after being convicted of murdering two teenage girls in 2017. the jury found richard allen guilty yesterday in the deaths of 13-year-old abby williams and 14-year-old libby german. prosecutors say he forced the girls off a trail in the small town of delphi while they were hiking and killed them. indianapolis defense attorney john tompkins followed the case from the beginning. >> surprised, yes. i thought there was a fair amount of questionable evidence and there were some significant weaknesses in the state's case

so i thought a not guilty verdict was a real possibility. >> allen was arrested more than five years after the murders. he'll be sentenced next month. turning overseas. ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy said russia has deployed 50,000 troops, including thousands of north korean soldiers ahead of an offensive to reclaim areas of the kursk region. cbs's imtiaz tyab has returned. >> reporter: they are rushing to put out fires. russian's eastern kursk region, parts were seized earlier this summer. russian soldiers were targeted in a ukrainian strike. a sharp escalation of violence following president-elect's

decisive win has seen them carry out the largest single day drone attacks against each other since fighting began nearly three years ago. the past week has seen the kremlin amass more than 50,000 troops along the country's western front, including some 10,000 allied north korean soldiers. the intense surge in violence comes as president-elect trump has vowed to end the war within, quote, 24 hours, but has yet to say how. amid reports he's already had calls with russian leader vladimir putin, something putin's spokesman has denied, calling it pure fiction. whatever the case, ukrainian leaders fear the incoming trump administration's attempts to end the war is forced into making major concessions, including giving up territory. in the heart of the capital kyiv we met a woman who fears a trump presidency. so you're worried about the future?

well, disney to the rescue. the coast guard said it sent out a call for help from the nearest ship on sunday. when a disabled boat began taking on water 265 miles off the coast of bermuda. the cruise ship, disney treasure, 80 miles away traveling from the netherlands to florida responded. they launched a life boat to rescue four passengers. a fraternity at cornell university is suspended and a man who allegedly staged a murder is arrested. those are some of the headlines on the morning newstand. the associated press reports a tennessee fugitive accused of killing a man and lying about a bear chase was caught in south carolina. authorities say nicolas hamlet called 911 last month claiming he was a hiker named brandon andrade. he said he fell off a cliff and was injured. authorities found a body but determined it was not andrade.

they say hamlet stole his i.d. to escape parole. the dead man was identified as steven lloyd. "usa today" says an irish man was arrested and charged in connection with the death of an american student. she was reported missing last week after she was last seen at a nightclub in the hungarian capitol. police arrested the suspect after looking at the security video from several nightclubs when they saw them together. he confessed to the killing during a, quote, intimate act but claimed it was an accident. he put the body in a suitcase, dumped it in a wooded area and led police to the location. a cornell university was temporarily suspended after an alleged sexual assault. the victim reported being sexually assaulted at an off campus event by several males.
