donald trump goes to washington. the president-elect returns to the white house today, his first trip back since leaving office, as his new cabinet takes shape. breaking overnight, new details in the powerful explosion that rocked a kentucky factory as investigators search for a cause. and 23 and me troubles. as the genetic testing company faces financial struggles, questions and concerns about what happens to your dna data. good morning, i'm michael george. well, in a few hours president-elect donald trump will return to the white house to meet with the man who ousted him nearly four years ago, president joe biden. it comes as trump has been quickly naming his picks to head up key departments including tapping elon musk and former gop presidential candidate vivek ramaswamy to lead a department of efficiency. these are just some of the

people who will help shape trump's policies at home and abroad. jarred hill has more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. that announcement on this department of government efficiency which they're referring to as doj, like the cryptocurrency, says it will provide advice and guidance from outside of government. but it's not clear how this would be funded or who would implement any recommendations. meanwhile today at the white house a meeting with two men with a contentious relationship to say the least. this morning, president-elect donald trump back at the white house meeting with president joe biden who once called him an existential threat to democracy. >> he believes in the norms. he believes in our institution. he believes in the peaceful transfer of power. >> reporter: the visit comes as trump has been building his new administration. yesterday the president-elect said billionaire elon musk and entrepreneur vivek ramaswamy will coy chair a newly created department of department efficiency designed to dismantle bureaucracy and slash excess waste, calling it the manhattan project of our time.

>> your money is being wasted, and the department of government efficiency is going to fix that. >> reporter: trump nominated former arkansas governor mike huckabee, a strong defender of israel who's against a two-state solution with palestinians, as u.s. ambassador to israel. former texas congresswoman john ratcliffe, once director of national intelligence, picked as cia director. and army veteran and fox news host pete hegseth named secretary of defense. a pick that drew this reaction from the top democrat on the house armed services committee -- >> he does not seem to have much of a detailed background in dod policy. the lack of experience is concerning. >> reporter: the republican-led senate will have to confirm pete hegseth and other picks in the coming weeks. incoming first lady melania trump is not expected to join her husband on this trip to the white house, although first lady jill biden did extend an invitation to her directly. >> all right, jarred hill. thanks for joining us. and republican leaders will

also meet with president-elect donald trump during his trip to washington. there's a big vote in the senate today. the first seriously contested republican leadership election in decades. three senators are vying to replace longtime gop leader mitch mcconnell when he steps down this year. cbs' scott macfarlane has more on the busy week in congress. >> reporter: trump loyalists descended on washington poised to take control with a promise from the speaker to move quickly. >> we will be ready on day one. we are prepared this time, and as we wind down the 118th congress we'll be ready to take the ball and run full speed in the 119th congress that begins in january. >> reporter: a welcome back for democrats who survived the storm. [ cheers ] training sessions began for the newly elected including new jersey democrat andy kim, the first korean american ever elected to the senate. >> i think we're up to the task. >> reporter: his opponent hasn't conceded, but republican dave mccormick who leads in the pennsylvania senate race, was

invited to orientation. in the u.s. house, some races remain undecided, but republicans are on a trajectory to the magic number of 218 seats to win the majority. democrats are regrouping. >> i think we're going to have a family conversation that needs to be clear eyed, candid, and comprehensive. >> yeah. >> to figure out what happened on election night. >> reporter: congresswoman-elect lateefah simon, a widowed mother born legally blind, will represent oakland, california, and says her party is ready for a fight. you're arriving at what some describe as a toxic moment here. >> yeah. >> reporter: how do you deal with that? >> yeah. real leaders lead in any environment. >> reporter: it's republicans who will fight the first bruising battle among themselves, choosing a republican senate leader to succeed mitch mcconnell. the candidates include texas' john cornyn and mcconnell's lieutenant john thune of south dakota. but trump ally elon musk has urged for florida's rick scott who'd posted he'd agree to trump's call for the senate to surrender some power to confirm trump's cabinet and judges,

allowing recess appointments. if recess appointments are allowed, trump nominees could take the helm and take their posts without hearings and without votes here. as for the vote for senate republican leader, that happens by secret ballot which makes it difficult to exert any outside pressure. scott macfarlane, cbs news, the capitol. breaking overnight, we're learning that a massive explosion at a plant in louisville, kentucky, has turned deadly. at least two workers were killed according to the communication director of the givaudan sense color factory. nearly a dozen others were hurt. the blast rocked the surrounding neighborhood blowing out window -- windows and doors in homes and businesses. people within a mile were urged to shelter in place for two hours. the company produces natural color for food and drinks. the investigation is under way to determine the cause of the explosion. and the u.s. says it will not withhold weapons shipments

to israel as the 30-day deadline to address the gaza aid crisis expires. the state department says israel has taken some but not all steps to increase the flow of humanitarian aid into gaza. relief groups say conditions are worse than at any point in the 13-month-old war. israel opened a new crossing to let aid in and says there are hundreds of trucks sitting on the gaza side of the southern border. the u.n. says it can't distribute most of it because of lawlessness, fighting, and restrictions from the israeli military. back here at home, genetic testing company 23 and me is cutting 40% of its work force to stay afloat. many people wonder what could happen to the dna and health data submitted by customers if the company collapses. the story from cbs' carter evans. >> reporter: millions have used 23 and me to help answer a simple question -- >> i wonder who does make you who you are? >> reporter: just give a saliva sample and get highly sensitive information about your health and genealogy. but now the company's fallen on

hard times with big layoffs, losing nearly $6 billion, 98% of its value. >> this has been a train wreck situation in 23 and me. >> reporter: since 23 and me is not a health care company, your dna data is not protected by health privacy laws. but the company tells cbs news "we have strong customer privacy protections in place," and it does not share customer data without their consent. >> now more and more customers of 23 and me are saying what happens to my data. if it goes bankrupt, potentially could people buy the data? >> reporter: 23 and me's database is the largest asset. for customers that information could be their biggest liability. in a data breach last year, hackers stole the dna profiles of nearly seven million users. do you think people who gave their dna to 23 and me should be concerned? >> i would be concerned. it's like any form of digital data right now. it's vulnerable. >> reporter: worst case scenario -- your dna could be used against you.

"cbs new york" reports firefighters are racing to contain the jennings creek wildfire along the border of new york and new jersey. they battled rugged terrain, gusty winds, and dry conditions yesterday. officials say the 5,000-acre fire is about 20% contained. new york governor hochul described the current conditions as pretty dire and ordered a statewide ban on outdoor burning. one person fighting the fire was killed last weekend when a tree fell on him. "the boston globe" says a federal judge sentenced former air

national guard member jack teixeira to prison final for leaking classified information. he plead guilty to violating the espionage act when he posted sensitive documents to the social media platform discord. it included information about the war in ukraine and other national security issues. he apologized in a federal courtroom in boston yesterday before sentencing. and "the advocate" says a federal judge blocked a new louisiana law requiring the ten commandments to be displayed in all public school classrooms by january 1st. the judge said the law is unconstitutional and had an overtly religious purpose. supporters say it's not solely religious but also has historical significance to the foundation of u.s. law. the state attorney general says she'll ask a federal appeals court to quickly stay the ruling pending an appeal. ahead, football stars the victims of foul play. two super bowl winners reportedly had their homes burglarized. reportedly had their homes

the nasdaq and the s&p both lost 17. the department of justice filed a lawsuit to block united health's $3.3 billion takeover of the home health firm amedisys. the deal between the large rival companies would harm competition in the home health services market. tuesday's lawsuit follows united health's acquisition of another home health and hospice provider, lhc group, inc. kraft heinz is pulls its lunchables prepackaged boxes of deli meats, cheese, and crackers from the program that provides free and reduced price meals to low-income students. the company says weak demand forced them to cut ties. "consumer reports" is applauding the move, saying lunchables contains, quote, concerning levels of sodium and harmful chemicals that have no place on the school lunch menu. and mcdonald's has a taste for the holiday spirit.
