a brush fire burns in manhattan. the latest in the historic number of wildfires spreading across the northeast. the drought warnings and growing concerns. and fighting inflation. the road to lower prices hits a speed bump. what's driving up the cost of living? good morning, i'm michael george. well, there is growing reaction this morning to donald trump's surprise pick of matt gaetz to serve as the highest ranking law enforcement official. the former florida congressman, he resigned yesterday, has been the subject of house and justice department investigations into alleged sexual misconduct, but he's also been one of trump's most loyal supporters. and as the president-elect has vowed, gaetz could be used for retribution against trump's critics. the controversy comes as the president-elect was welcomed back to the white house yesterday by president joe biden. jarred hill is here to break down the latest developments good morning. >> reporter: there's a lot going on here. president-elect donald trump

choosing matt gaetz as his attorney general for the united states was a surprise even to some members of his own party. he also selected marco rubio as his desired secretary of state and a former democrat for another key position. >> welcome, welcome back. >> reporter: after a bitter battle on the campaign trail, president joe biden welcomed president-elect donald trump to a cordial meeting at the white house. >> politics is tough, and it's -- many cases not a very nice world. but it is a nice world today. >> reporter: the two-hour sit-down as trump's transition rolled ahead, naming florida congressman matt gaetz as his pick for u.s. attorney general raising eyebrows from both sides of the aisle. >> it's just kind of like a god-tier kind of trolling. just to trigger a meltdown. >> i think it's silly. the president and his team is smart enough to know that mr. gaetz will never get confirmed by the senate. >> reporter: gaetz, a staunch trump ally, resigned from the house wednesday days before a

house ethics panel was deciding whether to release its report on its investigation into whether gaetz engaged in sexual misconduct and tried to obstruct government investigations according to three sources with knowledge of the committee's work. wednesday trump named former democratic congresswoman tulsi gabbard as his director of national intelligence. she's likely to be grilled over sympathetic statements toward russia and a self-funded trip to meet with syria's leader. the army vet last night on fox news -- >> the american people delivered an incredible mandate for change in this election. of course there's going to be resistance to change from the swamp in washington. >> reporter: the groundwork being laid at the white house as republicans make a clean sweep on the hill. now projected to control the house and the senate. today a house democrat is planning to introduce regulation essentially reaffirming a part of the constitution that says presidents can only serve eight years in office. this comes after trump yesterday commented, some say in a joking

manner, that he would serve a third term, michael, if he were allowed to by house republicans. this would essentially be a way for democrats to get republicans on the record saying that that can't happen. will that happen on paper? we'll have to see. >> all right. jarred hill, thanks so much. now the u.s. constitution makes clear the senate's advice and consent role on presidential appointments, and senate republicans say they'll take that role seriously when it comes to donald trump's cabinet picks. cbs' scott macfarlane on the confirmation process ahead. >> reporter: for the first time in 18 years, a new republican will lead the u.s. senate. he's john thune, a longtime senator from south dakota. chosen by his republican colleagues by secret ballot to succeed mitch mcconnell. and immediately indicating the senate will stand its ground and insist are reviewing trump's nominees. >> the senate ads you know -- as you know, by the founders' design is

a place where the minority has a voice. >> reporter: some senate republicans were vague in their responses to some of trump's choices, including for attorney general. >> well, it was a surprise to me. it's an interesting pick. >> reporter: some of congressman matt gaetz's colleagues applauded it. >> matt gaetz picked by president trump is a strong statement that the weaponization of government, you know, and the biden administration using government against their political enemies is coming to an end. >> reporter: democrats are spoiling for a fight. do you think this republican senate might be a blank them for all confirmations? >> benefit of the doubt, yes. blank check, no. i think there will be limits, and trump is testing them. >> reporter: house republicans clinched victory in the u.s. house according to cbs news projections, reaching the magic number of 218 seats with some of the late tabulations coming in. trump celebrated at a capitol hill meeting of house republicans lauding his own victory. >> we had like historic kind of numbers, especially for the president. but we won't get into that.

but the house did very well. >> reporter: trump was joined by his ally, elon musk. [ applause ] who got an ovation from house republicans. and house republicans have again chosen mike johnson of louisiana to be their nominee to be speaker of the house. johnson has been a loyal ally of trump's including on and after january 6th, 2021. scott macfarlane, cbs news, the capitol. wildfires in the northeast continue to burn amid some of the driest conditions in more than a century. firefighters in new york city battled a brush fire that broke out in a park yesterday on the northern tip of manhattan. it sent smoke billowing across the city. meanwhile, fire crews are slowly making progress against the 5,000-acre jennings creek wildfire along the new york-new jersey border. it's now 50% contained. one person fighting the fire was killed last weekend when a tree fell on him. new jersey governor phil murphy declared a drought warning asking people to take voluntary water conservation measures.

new york city issued a drought watch last week. and while the northeast is experiencing a drought, there's a new weather system in the caribbean that's expected to turn into tropical storm sara. the national hurricane center says heavy rain will cause life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides in honduras and across central america. forecast models show it lingering in the caribbean through the weekend before turning to the north and the gulf of mexico early next week. a man who works for the cia is accused of leaking classified information about israel's earlier plans for a retaliatory strike on iran. asif william rahman was arrested by the fbi in cambodia this week. he's charged with two counts of transmitting national defense information on a channel of the telegram messaging app. court papers reveal he held top-secret security clearance. israel attacked iran last month in response to iran's missile attack on israel weeks earlier. protesters took to the streets of paris over a

controversial gala organized by far-right supporters of israel. israel's hard-line finance minister was supposed to attend the event to raise money for the israeli military, but his office said he would not be there. the protests also come ahead of a soccer match today between israel and france. security's been ramped up after israeli soccer fans were attacked last week in amsterdam following a match there. back home, the number of people sickened by e. coli linked to slivered onions on mcdonald's quarter pounder hamburgers has climbed to at least 104 people in 14 states. the cdc says 34 people have been hospitalized in the outbreak linked to onions from a california-based produce grower. one person died in colorado. mcdonald's says it found a different onion supplier and is back to serving quarter pounders after pulling them in several states. coming up, security concerns over the g20 summit in brazil

others injured tuesday when the givaudan sense color plant exploded. neighbors said they complained to the company and local officials about strange smells coming from the plant which produces natural color for food and drinks. authorities say the building housed hazardous chemicals, but they don't know yet what caused the blast. "the boston globe" says a florida man was charged in connection with the 1978 murders of a man and woman in west springfield, massachusetts. timothy joley is accused of killing mark harnish and theresa marcoux as they were coming moment from a party. investigators say they were shot in harnish's truck at a rest area. police found their body slumped over a nearby guardrail. a single fingerprint from the crime scene led to joley's arrest after a tip was recently called in. and the "los angeles times" says four people are accused in a bizarre insurance fraud scheme allegedly staging fake bear attacks inside cars. authorities say the suspects submitted videos of what they said were bear attacks as part of an insurance claim for damage

i have one child. >> banks' family says police are wrongly basing their belief they found banks based on an old expired driver's license they found on the woman. but the lapd says the case is closed. mixed martial artist conor mcgregor denies he sexually assaulted a woman in 2018. he testified yesterday in dublin saying the encounter was con -- consensual and his accuser's story is lies. the woman testified last week she was brutally raped and battered and that mcgregor threatened to kill her. police had previously investigated but did not bring criminal charges. and kansas city chiefs quarterback patrick mahomes is opening up about being targeted by burglars. police reports show that both mahomes and his teammate travis kelce were both victims of break-ins at their homes last month. mahomes discussed the incidents during his weekly news conference yesterday. >> obviously it's -- it's frustrating, disappointing.
